GALWAY SESSIONS 2016 12-19JUNE
INTRODUCTION
T
hough always aware of Éamonn Ceannt’s significant and important role
in the 1916 Rising and his equally important contribution to the revival
of the Irish language and Irish piping, it wasn’t till after reading William
Henry’s excellent biography of Éamonn Ceannt Supreme Sacrifice that I
came to truly appreciate what an extraordinary man he was.
One can only admire and be fascinated by his single-mindedness ,
fastidious and meticulous attention to detail and his absolute application to
each and every endeavour he under took. A true intellectual, he was described
by many as reserved, almost aloof. But beneath this exterior was a passionate
and sensitive man. His passion for the Irish language and Irish traditional
music in particular piping were central to his belief in a nationalist future
for Ireland. These passions where shared by his wife Áine O’Brennan an
equally committed activist in the Gaelic League, Cumman na bPíobairí and
Cumman na mBan. The level of commitment, dedication and work Éamonn
Ceannt gave to organisations such as Cumman na bPíobairí, the Gaelic
League, Sinn Féin and the Irish Volunteers as well as his prolific contributions
to Irish language, music and political publications is truly breathtaking.
Our focus in this year’s Galway Sessions is on piping and pipers. It is a celebration of piping! Through
our extensive programme we hope to demonstrate how piping has evolved since Éamonn Ceannt’s day. I
firmly believe he would be very proud indeed of the status uilleann pipes have acquired in world music and in
particular of the achievements of Na bPíobairí Uilleann which evolved from the organisation which Éamonn
Ceannt co-founded in 1900, Cumman na bPíobairí.
Equally, I hope that our lecture series in the Galway City Museum will help people to acquire a greater
understanding of Éammon Ceannt’s love for Galway, it’s people, it’s language, music and culture.
Éammon Ceannt through his life and death left us a remarkable legacy for which we as a nation and a
people should be eternally grateful. He is a man worthy of commemoration and remembrance and I trust our
offering will honour him in a fitting manner. God rest his soul.
C
é go raibh eolas agam riamh faoin ról lárnach agus tábhachtach a bhí ag Éamonn Ceannt in Éirí Amach
na Cásca agus in athbheochan na Gaeilge agus ceol na bpíb, ba nuair a léigh mé sárbheathaisnéis William
Henry, Supreme Sacrifice, a thuig mé i gceart cé chomh iontach is a bhí sé mar dhuine.
Ní fhéadfadh duine gan meas a bheith aige ar an dúthracht agus ar an gcáiréis a léirigh sé i dtaobh gach a
raibh sé ag iarraidh a bhaint amach agus ní fhéadfadh duine gan suim a chur sa saothar a rinne sé ar chaith sé an
oiread sin dua léi. Mheas roinnt daoine gur fear é a bhí ciúin ann féin agus nach fear mór cuideachta a bhí ann.
Ach ainneoin an chuma sin a bheith air, duine paiseanta agus tuisceanach ab ea é. Intleachtóir go smior a bhí ann.
Bhí an grá a bhí aige don Ghaeilge agus do cheol traidisiúnta na hÉireann ina dhlúthchuid den fhís a bhí aige mar
náisiúnach d’Éirinn. Bhí an tsuim chéanna ag a bhean chéile Áine O’Brennan sna cúrsaí seo agus bhí sí chomh
gníomhach is bhí Éamonn féin i gConaradh na Gaeilge agus i gCumann na bPíobairí. Ba bhall gníomhach í de
Chumann na mBan freisin. B’iontach an méid dua a chaith sé le cur chun cinn na n-eagraíochtaí a raibh baint
aige leo: Cumman na bPíobairí, Conradh na Gaeilge, Sinn Féin agus Óglaigh na hÉireann. B’iontach freisin an
obair a rinne sé ar son na Gaeilge, an cheoil agus na bhfoilseachán polaitiúil a raibh baint aige leo.
Beimid ag díriú sna seisiúin cheoil seo i mbliana ar cheol na bpíb agus ar na píobairí féin. Ceiliúradh ar
cheol na bpíb atá ann! Agus clár cuimsitheach leagtha amach againn tá súil againn léargas a thabhairt do dhaoine
ar an bhforbairt atá tagtha ar an bpíobaireacht ón uair a bhí Éamonn Ceant beo. Creidim go láidir go mbeadh
Ceannt féin bródúil as an stádas atá bainte amach ag ceol na bpíb uilleann i saol an cheoil domhanda agus go
mbeadh sé bródúil go háirithe as an méid atá bainte amach ag Na Píobairí Uilleann a d’eascair as an eagras a
raibh baint ag Éamonn Ceannt lena bhunú.
Ar an dul céanna, tá súil agam go gcuirfidh na leachtaí atá beartaithe againn i Músaem Cathrach na
Gaillimhe leis an tuiscint atá ag daoine ar an gcion a bhí ag Eammon Ceannt ar Ghaillimh, ar mhuintir na
Gaillimhe agus ar theanga, ar cheol agus ar chultúr na Gaillimhe.
D’ fhág saol agus saothar Éammon Ceannt oidhreacht iontach le huacht againn, oidhreacht ar cheart
dúinne, mar náisiún, a bheith buíoch go deo as.
Is fiú go mór an fear seo a thabhairt chun cuimhne agus creidim go ndéanfaidh an saothar atá beartaithe
againne comóradh cuí air. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal. Mick Crehan Festival Director

R
ugadh Éamonn Ceannt ar an 21 Meán Fómhair 1881 i mBéal Átha
Mó, Contae na Gaillimhe. Constábla ab ea a athair i gConstáblacht
Ríoga na hÉireann. Aistríodh athair Ceannt go dtí Baile Átha Firdhia
agus as sin go dtí Baile Átha Cliath i 1892 D’ fhreastail Éamonn ar Scoil
na mBráithre Críostaí ar Shráid Richmond Thuaidh. I 1898, i dteannta a
chairde ón scoil, ghlac Ceannt páirt ar i gcomóradh 100 bliain Éirí Amach
1798. Tréimhse athbheochana ab ea í ina a raibh spiorad an náisiúin
go mór sa treis agus chuir Ceannt suim mhór sa náisiúnachas. I 1899,
ceapadh ina bhall d’Ard-Chraobh Chonradh na Gaeilge, agus is ansin a
chuir sé aithne ar Phádraig Mac Piarais agus ar Eóin Mac Néill. Rinne
Ceannt staidéar ar an nGaeilge chomh maith agus faoin mbliain 1905 bhí
sé ina theagascóir Gaeilge ag an gConradh. D’éirigh leis chomh maith post
a fháil ar fhoireann chléireachais Bhardas Bhaile Átha Cliath. Le linn an
ama seo bhí baint mhór aige le hathbheochan an cheoil Éireannaigh, agus
go háirithe le athbheochan cheol na bpíb cogaidh agus na bpíb uilleann.
Ba mhór a mheas agus a chion ar an gceol dúchasach agus b’iad na píb
uilleann an phríomhuirlis cheoil aige féin. I bhFeabhra 1900, bhí sé ar dhuine de bhunaitheoirí Chumann
na bPíobairí (The Pipers Club). Phós sé Frances Mary ‘Áine’ O’Brennan ar an 7 Meitheamh 1905 agus
saolaíodh an t-aon leanbh a bhí acu, Rónán, beagán le cois bliain ina dhiaidh sin. I 1907, chuaigh Ceannt le
hArd-Chraobh Shinn Féin. Ar an 12 December 1912, ghlac sé le móid Bhráithreachas Phoblacht na hÉireann
agus ceapadh ar gComhairle Mhíleata é ina dhiaidh sin. Bhí sé ar dhuine de na daoine a bhunaigh Óglaigh
na hÉireann ar an 10 Samhain 1913. Bhí baint ag Ceannt leis an eachtra inar tugadh airm i dtír i mBinn
Éadair i mí Iúil na bliana sin. I 1915 ceapadh é mar Stiúrthóir Cumarsáide agus Ceannfort an 4ú Cathlán
d’Óglaigh na hÉireann. Bhí sé ina measc siúd a ghlac seilbh ar Theach na mBocht, Aontas Bhaile Átha
Cliath Theas, le linn Éirí Amach na Cásca 1916. Nuair a ghéill na hÓglaigh cuireadh Ceannt go dtí Dún
Richmond, áit ar triaileadh os comhair armchúirte é. Go gairid roimh éirí an lae, ar an 8 Bealtaine 1916,
chuir scuad lámhaigh chun báis Éamonn Ceannt i bPríosún Chill Mhaighneann.
É
amonn Ceannt was born on 21 September 1881 in Ballymoe, County Galway. His father was a constable
in the Royal Irish Constabulary. He was transferred to Ardee a short time later and from there to
Dublin in 1892. Éamonn began attending the North Richmond Street Christian Brothers School.
In 1898, along with other school friends, Ceannt took part in the Centenary Celebrations of the
1798 Rebellion. It was a time of tremendous revival in the national spirit and Ceannt became
intensely inflamed with the idea of nationalism. In 1899, he joined the Central Branch of the
Gaelic League, where he first met Patrick Pearse and Eóin MacNeill. He studied Irish and
by 1905, he was a teacher for the Gaelic League. Ceannt also secured a post on the clerical
staff of Dublin Corporation. During this period he was also influencing the revival of Irish
music and in particular the Irish War and Uilleann Pipes. So strong was his love of Irish
music that he embraced the music and chose the pipes as his main instrument.
In February 1900, he became a founder of Cumann na bPíobairí (The Pipers Club).
He married Frances Mary ‘Áine’ O’Brennan on 7 June 1905 and their only child,
Rónán, was born just over a year later. In 1907, Ceannt joined the Dublin
Central Branch of Sinn Féin. On 12 December 1912, Ceannt was sworn
into the Irish Republican Brotherhood and was later appointed to its
military council. He became a founder member of the Irish Volunteers
on 10 November 1913 at the Rotunda Rink in Dublin. Ceannt was
involved in the Howth gun-running episode in July of that year.
In 1915, he was appointed Director of Communications and
Commandant of the 4th Battalion of Volunteers. He occupied
the South Dublin Union complex during the rebellion of
Easter Week 1916. Following the surrender a week later
Ceannt was taken to Richmond Barracks where he faced
a military court martial. Just before dawn in 8 May 1916,
Éamonn Ceannt was executed by firing squad in Kilmainham Jail.

RECITALS AT THE CRANE BAR
Concertina Featuring Noel Hill, Cormac Begley & Jack Talty
The Crane Bar / Sunday 12 June at 9pm / Admission €15
Concertina is an exciting new trio featuring Noel Hill, Cormac Begley and Jack Talty bringing together three
of Ireland’s most influential players. Concertina draws on an eclectic range of musical insights to create a
unique soundscape that combines brass, baritone, treble and piccolo concertinas. It is a musical experience

greatest piper never to have played the pipes!
Jimmy O’Brien Moran & Jessie Smith
The Crane Bar / Monday 13 June at 9pm / Admission €10
Jimmy O’Brien Moran from Tramore in Co. Waterford, a piper of note, will be remembered by many as a
member of the ground breaking band Scullion. Jimmy will perform music from his CD Take Me Tender,
a tribute to the music of Paddy Conneely, a blind piper who lived in Galway in the mid-1800s. Having
survived the Great Famine, Conneely died on September 11 1851. However over 180 pieces of his music had
been transcribed by at least five collectors, leaving a fascinating record of piping style and repertoire of
pre-Famine Ireland. Jimmy will be joined by Irish American fiddler Jessie Smith.
Padraig McGovern & Peter Carberry

This gig brings together two of Ireland’s foremost proponents on their respective instruments, Peter Carberry
on accordion from Co. Longford and Padraig McGovern from Leitrim on uilleann pipes. Peter Carberry is
a member of one of the most important piping families of the 20th century and has adapted pipe music to
accordion like no other. The duo play uncommon settings of tunes learned from recordings of past masters
and old manuscripts. Peter and Padraig play on lower pitched instruments in the key of B and Peter has his
bass retuned to emulate the chords of pipes’ regulators resulting in an innovative combination producing a
hive of harmonies. This is music played with great feeling and passion.

Galway at a young age, his father being stationed in Ardee, Co. Louth in 1883 and later in Dublin. Although
he left Galway at a young age Ceannt always took great pride in letting people know he was a Galwegian
and spent all of his holidays in the county. This event will feature a short commemoration followed by a
performance by the Ullapool Pipe Band from Scotland and a recital by the Éamonn Ceannt Quartet on
Uilleann pipes at the Fr. Flanagan Memorial Centre in Ballymoe, Co. Galway.
