1 Ponte Vedra Woman’s Club Monthly Newsletter October 2015 THE HIBISCUS President’s Corner Dear PVWC Members, What a wonderful first month of our 45th year! We started off receiving the $3,100.00 check from Underwood’s Jewelry Store from the Trunk Show/Party that they hosted for us last spring. These funds have been designated to go to the St. Augustine Youth Services. Next, our Ways and Means co-chairs, kicked into full gear with a fun and lively Trivia night, lead by our amazing Denice Goldberg, Nanc Breznai and equally amazing co-chair of Charity, Marcia Kennedy. Also, least we not give credit to Harvey Goldberg, Denice’s husband, for lending us his booming voice that evening! This evening was a huge success. Denice and Nanc had to turn away over thirty very disappointed people who wanted to come to this event, because the tickets were sold out! The reason I point this out is that these wonderful ladies are starting to sell tickets to our next event, on November 10, hosted by Table 1. St. Gerard’s will be the lucky recipients of the proceeds from our Trivia Night proceeds. Our scholarship recipients will receive the proceeds from Table 1, so please, come to this event and help some well deserving student reach their dream of a college education! The membership recruitment luncheon and evening get together were huge successes! Thanks to these and other recruitment efforts, our club begins the new year with 36 new members. Many new members were particularly interested in charity service opportunities, while others were enthusiastic about getting involved in planning fundraising events. Whatever your interest, there will be several opportunities to be an active member. We look forward to seeing all our club members at this year’s events. Charity in Service. Social Hour at Pusser’s was well attended by members and their spouses! It’s great to see everyone getting to know each other in this casual setting! Trivia Night at Pusser’s was a “sold out” success! More than 80 people on 17 teams competed for prizes and bragging rights. Proceeds from the event will go to benefit St. Gerard’s School! Jazzercise Divas were the winner! Nice job, ladies! (Photo) Photos from recruitment events As highlighted in the September issue of The Hibiscus, this year will include service opportunities at the charities we are supporting. The first such opportunity is already here! On November 24, 2015, PVWC members will visit St. Gerards Campus in St. Augustine, tour the facility and host a Thanksgiving dinner for the residents. Please plan to bring a dish to pass. St. Gerards is also in need of volunteers to work between the hours of 8 am and 5pm on Fridays, Saturdays and/or Mondays. If you are interested, please call Evelyn at St. Gerards directly, at 386-279-9562. Carpools will leave from Nocatee Publix and PV Library, at 10:30 am on November 24th. Charity Spotlight: St. Gerard Campus: Excerpted from Webpage as of September 14, 2015 St. Gerard’s Campus rescues girls and provides guidance to help them avoid poverty, dependency and welfare. The girls learn to cope with difficult situations, rise above those difficulties, and grow to be nurturing mothers, productive members of society. With encouragement and support for completing their education, many of the girls graduate from high school and go on to obtain a college education and become a positive force in the workplace. The mission of St. Gerard’s began in 1981 when Carol Wolff and her husband moved to St. Augustine, FL to retire. Carol met a teenage mother who had been kicked out of her parents’ home and forced to live in an abusive situation. Since there were no agencies in St. Johns County 2 to support young pregnant women, Carol turned to Catholic Charities for support and began counseling the young mothers, providing essential supplies and other support. After only three years, Carol and Al purchased land and established a refuge that grew into what is known today as St. Gerard’s Campus. Over the past 34 years, Carol and Al Wolff have mentored more than 50,000 women and supported the birth of nearly 30,000 babies. St. Gerard’s relies solely on private and ‘in kind’ donations, fundraising and grants to continue its operation. Always welcome are donations of diapers, baby food, clothes, and school and household supplies. St. Gerard’s Campus is located at 1405 U.S. 1 South, St. Augustine, Florida. You may learn more about St. Gerard Campus by clicking the link and visiting their website. 1 2 Ponte Vedra Woman’s Club Monthly Newsletter October 2015 Socials and Special Events: Regular and re-occurring events are posted on our website, www.pontevedrawomansclub.com. You SNOOZE YOU LOOSE! Don’t forget to come to our October 20th meeting at the PV library where we will be celebrating our 45th anniversary of the PVWC where plastic surgeon, Dr. Erez Sternberg of Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery, will give a presentation about the latest and greatest techniques to stay looking fabulous. It’s never too soon or too late to learn about this medical field!! Also during the October 20th meeting we will have our Angel Tree. If you wish, you can become an Angel for a deserving student at the School for the Deaf and Blind this Christmas. Receiving students have no home to go home to over the holidays. As their Angel you provide Christmas presents, which I guarantee you helps make their Christmas. Our featured charity this month is St. Gerards, and they are in desperate need of anything that babies need: diapers, wipes, pacifiers, formula, baby and maternity clothing. If you are inclined to donate, please bring the needed items to the October 20th meeting at the PV Library. Last but not least, we have our field trip coming up to the School for the Deaf and Blind on Thursday, October 15th. I hope we have a big turnout! Field trips are truly the only way to learn about our charities. Words do not do them justice. Time constraints precluded service hours during this field trip, but on November 24th , we will have a field service trip to St. Gerards, so mark your calendar!
