The Bus trip to Bundaberg was a great success, thanks to Vic TOONEN who arranged the bus hire and drove us on Vic's U Turn tour. (U turn here, U turn there, we weren't lost we were with Vic. On the way to Bundaberg we eventually found a keen steam enthusiast had a full steam roller and a stationary steam engine, both in full steam. Some of us had a drive of the steam roller, it was a handful to reverse. On the same day while some of us played some also worked and thanks to cliff and a few others worked. Thanks to Cliff, Andrew, Ron, John , Don, Ian, Olive and Keith Mal and Son Joshua , Geoff and Greg for the efforts at the Garden Expo site markings. This earnt a substantial donation for the club. The committee has been working behind the scenes to organize the running of the Annual Swap. Once again I am asking that all of our club members put in a big effort to help out at he swap on the 29th. The week end after the swap (5th and 6th August( the 4 Club Rally is on . Happy Motoring, Rod Collins P AGE 5 Restoration Run 18/6/06. The weather didn’t look promising early in the morning bust just a few showers on and off during the day. It put a few members off as well as a mid month run. We arrived about 8:30 as well as the motor bike and the show entrants picking up their goodies and clean up. We set off about 9:20 with 6 cars in convoy. To North Arm and Eumundi via Kenilworth Rd. We stopped at Col and Mona MITCHELLS place. We had smoko before Col opened his shed up to the visitors and explained all about his car that he is restoring and the working os of the magnificent shed. ALL NEAT AND TIDY. Col and Mona are newer members and are restoring a 1927 Studebaker, he had all the mechanicals done also the chroming and is up to the wood work. He is having trouble s getting to do it for him. If anybody can help he would appreciate it . We had a few suggestions . After about 1 and 1/2 hours we set off for Malcolm Harris place at Mudjimba to see his bull nose Morris under restoration . He is more advanced with it than Col and Mona. Malcolm is almost up to the painting stage getting the hood made before he paints to avoid scratching. He started the car and drove up the street a way before reversing into the shed it runs ok. He is just waiting to get it on the road. While on the we made is a Scrabble run as well. Where everybody was given a letters to make up a word that I had previously written. None of my words were found however words were made up which scored prizes. We had lunch at Malcolm and Lindell’s place on their back patio with the last of the members we departed about 2:30pm. I would like to thank Col and Mona and Malcolm and Lindell for the opportunity to view their projects we know everybody had a great day. Caboolture Historic Day. 4 cars left Nambour at 8:30, we picked up 2 more on the way with 8 cars coming from Bribie. The weather was warm not like last year, the wind nearly blowing the hair of a dog. Bill Ross and his wife were there for the 1st time since Yandina, Australia Day. Those who didn’t go missed a good day with plenty to see tractors of all kinds stationary engines, cars, trucks , tools, steam engines, working displays and much more we arrived home about 4:00pm. From CLIFF HULTGREN P AGE 7 Ph; 3408 2364 Mob; 0417 635895 Rules to Rallying The following is what I like to call Handy Hints, Do’s and don’ts and unwritten rules to the devoted car rally enthusiast. It may help new members to our most enjoyable pastime and jog the memories of those who have been doing it for years. You may be able to add a few of your own to this. This was dreamed up by me as a result of stuff ups I have seen and I hope it will be of help to members and assist in making our hobby more enjoyable. Your Vehicle • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Always make sure your vehicle is Roadworthy and leave nothing to chance. Fuel up your vehicle before the run starts, so as not to interrupt the convoy and inconvience others . Carry at least one spare wheel. Jack and wheel spanner a must. Water, always carry a few litres 3 litre milk bottles are great for this. A small tool kit is a must in accordance with your vehicles needs. Spares , Carry the items which are most likely to give you trouble. Plugs, Points, Condenser, Coil, Fan or other belts which may be needed. Fuel pump or fuel pump kits, water pump or water pump kits also some owners like to carry puncture repair kits. If so don't forget the tyre lever and rubber hammer. Always check before a rallyOil, water, brake fluid, tyres and tyre pressures ( vehicles which have been unused for some time could loose tyre pressure). Make sure the battery terminals are clean. Check wheels (Inside ) for oil leaks indicating leaky brake cylinders. Things to take on a rally. Picnic hampers are very popular and should include crockery, cutlery, tea , coffee sugar. Biscuits are always a good standby. Sufficient food which is needed. Check the information in your Rally brochure. Fold up chairs, small tables and beach umbrellas or a flimsy raincoats don’t take up much room. Hats Berets and beanies are also popular. Warm coast or a warm blanket are also handy. Hints on Rallying Fill up with fuel before the run. Follow instructions on sheet provided . A clip board should be carried for you navigator to use. If you know the area you are visiting or not make sure you have a map. I am sure we are all map collectors. This should be handy for navigators. Use your club monthly magazine could also be carried. The unwritten rule is no passing. Stay in the line and make sure you don’t turn a corner unless the vehicle behind you can see where you are going. Don’t vary form the instructions unless you tell someone where you are going and why. If you deviate from the general rally and get into vehicle problems no one knows where you are. Tis also applies to the return journey. It could also effect your insurance if you get into trouble and you may also upset policemen. Mobile phones are great top carry on rallies but useless if no one knows your number. Give your mobile phone no to the rally director and anyone else you are travelling with, and also find out their number. Contnued over page…... P AGE 8 For those who have never attended a weekend rally I would like to explain a little about what happened. Almost all clubs Country and City run tat least one rally per year when members of other clubs are invited to join in . Some of these which I have attended have been absolutely marvellous , such as our own Motokana, the 4 Club Rally, Dalby, Roma and Beaudesert. The country Rallies are most interesting to “Vintage “ owners as there is usually plenty of them there. Other rallies such as the Winterun on the Gold Coast and others are a spent over a full week . These are great if you can do it. The normal rally starts on Saturday morning with arrival and lunch at the muster venue. After lunch a short run before preparing for a social dinner at a local venue. Sunday after breakfast, which is either provided or at your motel. There is another round before lunch. After lunch you have Sunday afternoon to return home. These runs normally include local places of interest and you will find them most interesting . Overall costs are always set so you can budget for them but usually require one night accommodation either motel of billet. It is amazing how many people you meet and the friends you make and these runs,. Also you are likely to pick up a few handy contacts and hints… Trevor Shields... Post operative wishes A motorcycle patrolman was rushed to the hospital with an inflamed appendix. The doctor operated and after the surgery advised him that all was well. However, in the recovery room the patrolman kept feeling something pulling at the hairs on his chest. Worried that it might be a second surgery the Doctor hadn't told him about, he finally got enough energy to pull his hospital gown down so he could look at what was making him so uncomfortable. Taped firmly across his hairy chest were three wide strip of adhesive tape, the kind that doesn't come off easily. Written in large black letters was the sentence... "Get well quick...from the nurse you gave a ticket to last week." P AGE 9 JULY Sun 16th Draught Horse Day 12th Annual. Amamoor Rec Grounds, Amamoor. Melt butter and golden syrup. Combine flour, sugar, coconut, dates and choc bits in a large bowl. Add butter and mixture and egg. Mix well. Press mixture evenly over base of prepared pan. Cook in moderate oven 180°C for about 20 mins or until lightly browned. Cool in pan. Cut the slice into squares, dust with icing sugar, keeps well (that’s if you can stop eating it) At last! an easy way to cook silverside (corned beef). Forget the onions, cloves, peppercornes, brown sugar, bay leaves etc. Just buy a cheap bottle of sweet ginger ale. Not dry ginger ale. pour over meat and cook as usual. This makes a really delicious flavour. You may never go back to the old way. I didn't. Here is an easy way to make scones. (1) Preheat oven to 220 degrees (fan forced 190 - 2000) (2) Put into a bowl 2 cups SR flour Mix in 1 cup of lemonade (Room temperature) 1/2 cup of cream pinch of salt. Turn mixture on to floured board and gently kneed. Cut with knife or use scone cutter. Place on tray and cook till brown on top. (approx. 10 - 12 minutes) Faith M Bundaberg Bus Trip adventures. P AGE 1 1 It was a cold and dark morning on 2nd July when several brave souls huddled in the bus ready to endue the trip to Bundy, to see the collection of 1 & 2 cylinder cars on display. Vic had the bus moving right on time 6am. With a couple of pit stops along the way we were making good time. Vic detoured down Woodgate road as he had organised for us to see some steam engines on route to the display. Someone forgot to tell Vic that we had a roadmap. We made a help phone call when the road ran into the sea at Woodgate. Backtracking onto the right road we stopped off to see these machines from a past era. We all had a go at driving the old steam roller, or should I say trying to drive it. Took abit of getting used to with 140 turns of the steering wheel from lock to lock. All aboard and off we set with a short distance to the park. We arrived around 11am and had a few hours to look around one our own. There were hundreds of people with the same idea which made it pretty hard to get around the cars. What a collection, around 60 early 1900's cars of all descriptions. After the crowds dispersed a little, you were able to get around the cars and talk to the owners., take photos etc. The grand parade at 2.30 saw all the cars start up and do a circuit of the park. It is such a pleasure to see so many cars restored and being able to be showed off like this. All aboard and off we set for home. Not really one more detour finds us having a cool drink at an old pub on the outskirts of Bundy. Built in the late 1890's there would be some stories to be told there. All aboard and yes we are homeward bound. Arriving safely back at the club house around 7.00pm. Thank you Vic for organising the day it was GREAT.. Regards and best wishes, Andrew King OUR SWAP MEET by Neil Boulton I have been asked to provide this item for the Newsletter for the benefit of those not familiar to the history and goings-on associated with our swap meet. I am relying on a fading memory for this so I hope any inaccuracies will be forgiven. Our swap started in 1988 at very short notice following a slot becoming available in the Combined Council’s published program. Evidently there was a hiccup with the Banyo Swap that year and we took the opportunity to run a swap in its place, as we had considered for a few years. That is how we come to run it on about the coldest Saturday of the year, always the last in July. Our first one was organized in about three weeks and we didn’t do a bad job for a bunch of beginners. There were around 2,000 through the gate and about 200 sites. We used all of the old machinery display area for sites which, in those days, had only a collection of very basic sheds belonging to individual exhibitors at the Sunshine Coast Show. We must have got it right as the next year we had about 2,500 through the gate and a small increase in sites. We were not using the show arena at that stage and, as a novelty, I offered kids rides in the Overland around the track. This was not at all successful and was abandoned from then on. We have never been able to draw many participants for the car display either. We also had free draws for petrol vouchers for the first few years. These were based on entry ticket numbers and announced every hour over the Public Address System which we had in those days. I don’t know what these contributed to our patron’s enthusiasm but we did keep growing. In 2005 we had about 6,500 through the gate, used every square metre of the grounds and had about 800 sites. Needles to say, organizing such an event takes a bit of doing. However, the load is spread and so far we have not broken anyone’s back. Each year, a small committee is formed and they meet monthly from January. Responsibilities for advertising, ground preparation, site allocation, catering, cleanup, cash management, parking/swapper control, signage and volunteer roster are allocated to various members of the committee. All committemen contribute to these aspects by discussion at meetings. Our own labour is needed for ground preparation (marking out sites, placing signs and setting up club office) which starts very early on the Friday morning. By 2pm we open the gates to swappers wishing to set up sites early and this continues throughout the night and early morning. General entry commences from dawn (or before sometimes). This all requires a roster of members to take fees and direct customers to their sites or parking. The entry charges and parking needs continue until about 1.30pm on the Saturday. Commencing around 2pm on the Saturday, we carry out a cleanup of the grounds, for which we need a few able-bodied people and a truck or two. Our customers leave us so much rubbish that we have to hire two large skip bins to cope. The swap contributes a considerable amount to our finances which allows us to be a bit generous in things like very low annual dues, subsidies for rallies and occasionally, free tucker. The average member is really only asked to contribute a small amount of his or her time. We are also building a reserve which will allow us to sustain a washout which we have so far been able to avoid, though we have come close once or twice. Although I said we spread the organising load, there are some of us who have been doing this for 18 years and are thus 18 years older as a result. The legs don’t work as well as they did in 1988 and nor does the brain. If you would be prepared to ease the burden and perhaps help retire some of the old horses (self included), please make it known and you will be welcomed into the fold.
