CLUBS NEW AND OLD ON THE RISE
Last Tuesday, the VAFA announced the inclusion for
2010 of the Point Cook Amateur Football Club as the
competition’s seventy – fourth football club.
Discussions had been in progress for over a year and
we are delighted to welcome then into the Amateurs.
Point Cook commenced as a junior club in the
Western Region Football League and now boast
fourteen teams. Next season, it is hopeful of going
straight into D4, fielding two senior teams.
Point Cook services an expanding community
adjacent to the Sanctuary Lakes Golf Course, with a
population of 45,000. It is anticipated that the
community will have to establish another junior
football club as just one struggles to cope with the
rapidly expanding demand.
It is vital that the VAFA continues to expand into new
and developing communities as we provide an
alternative to the metropolitan leagues.
Point Cook, along with Werribee, Old Westbourne,
and Williamstown CYMS gives us a strong presence
in the West which makes the task of gaining umpires
that much easier when there are matches played
weekly.
The previous two clubs to join the VAFA, St Francis
Xavier and South Mornington, have enjoyed early
success. St Francis Xavier is playing in the D3
Preliminary Final against St Marys / Salesian while
South Mornington was defeated in the D4 Elimination
Final against Richmond Centrals.
On behalf of every section of the VAFA, we welcome
Point Cook, whose Number #1 Ticket holder is Deputy
Prime Minister Julia Gillard. We wish them every
success in their journey.
since 1993. Both of these
clubs have had incredibly
successful
seasons
throughout their clubs. Old
Xaverians has had five teams
contesting finals (Senior,
Reserves, U19s, and Club
XVIII 1 & 2) Much has been Michael Sholly
spoken about the revival of CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
De La and it deserves much
credit. It has had three teams in finals (Senior, U19s 1
& 2). In the Under 19s last week, these clubs
displayed their junior talents with Xavs holding off the
fast finishing De La by just four points.
The U19 competition is providing a genuine pathway
for our clubs as they work on development rather than
recruitment to provide success. This is also evident in
B Section with minor premiers Old Melburnians also
leading the way in U19 South 1 after winning a Club
XVIII premiership a fortnight ago. They are certainly in
the hunt for four premierships with the seconds also
alive and playing in today’s second semi final.
All clubs need to be aligning themselves with a junior
football club or institution to provide a pathway for
young footballers.
Congratulations to MHSOB who have gained
promotion along with Rupertswood (D1), Peninsula
(D2), Bentleigh (D3), and Latrobe Uni have joined
Albert Park in D4. Today more teams will be rewarded
with promotion and the opportunity to win a
premiership. The clash at Sandringham between
Oakleigh and Caulfield Grammarians promises to be a
beauty. Whilst the Grammarians have led the
competition all year, the loss last week to MHSOB will
surely stir them into action and test their mental
strength.
Good luck to all clubs. I urge all spectators to adhere
to the VAFA rules and respect the players and officials
who are completing their tasks to the best of their
ability.

As this page’s immediate-past-penciller observed last
week, Round 18 never fails to surprise. Certainly, this
year it didn’t. As the curtain fell on another home and
away season, the top two teams lowered their colours,
while the bottom team gained some last-minute
consolation with a big win.
Suddenly there was sunshine at Chelsworth, ending
Old Ivanhoe’s winter of discontent. With just one win
between opening day and closing time, the Browns
have seen better years, but their final act was their best
for the campaign, touching up a Tonner team that
couldn’t wait for all to be over. Coach pro-tem Bra d
T hom pso n inspired a team effort that yielded twentyone goals shared among twelve marksmen, with
Ad ri a n De l mo nte striking four. Ni ck M a rst on, the dour
and reliable defender was best for Brighton and had
assistance from the sparky Da vi d S pri gg s and the
consistent M a tt Ga dsde n, but Old Ivanhoe had winners
all over the field: St ue y L ow, Ri cky Je ssop , Sa m
Ge i l i n gs, Ha yde n He ta as well as the redoubtable
gambolling gaffer himself. Despite the win, Old
Ivanhoe have been relegated, while Old Brighton are
searching for a new coach and undoubtedly a formula
that brings back the joy to Beach Road.
Old Essendon entertained an A Section opponent for
the final time this visit, but immediately fell behind
Marcellin. Needing to kick a record VAFA score to hold
its rung in the top tier, the Bombers went to the long
break seven goals in arrears. Their second half yielded
little joy for the home team either, despite strong
efforts from Da ns Co ope r and Flaherty. In his last
gunfight, the retiring (but not shy) Da ryl Ma rson
brought back memories of salad days, slotting home
five on the trusty left, while the estimable Gi a nl uca
R om a n i n also slotted three from boots he’ll be
hanging up, bronzing, or simply throwing away.
Marcellin survive in a Section, while Old Essendon
must again navigate those shoals of B Section that
they thought they’d left behind.

farewell
Ashton and Be n Dohe rty and
the re-signing of Pe t e r
B a n f i e l d for two years
ushering in a new era of stability. Uni Blues needed to
win to hold fourth spot, though they might have
expected some help from elsewhere. The Cards opened
in sensational fashion to lead by four goals at the first
change, which should have served as a wake-up call for
the Varsity. Half-way through the second, however,
Blues trailed by fifty four points and their season was in
the dumpster. Well, temporarily. The wily Ma rk
Pa te rson took over and with some inspirational work
from Andre w Lowcock and some strong efforts from
Ja ck Wa tts and Ma tt Torne y, Blues added eighteen of
the next twenty goals to roar home. An Elsternwick date
beckons for the Uni team, while the Scotch brainstrust
is already focused on next season.
A listless Old Xaverians were shown the door by
Collegians in a lacklustre affair at the Trott. Their seven
goal lead at the end of three might have multiplied with
more purple rain in the last had not the news filtered
through via the radio that Scotch had faltered badly. The
Red and Blacks, missing some stars and running down
the clock on the minor round from the very first bounce,
finally restored some balance with a good final stanza,
though the Colls’ hunger for the kill had understandably
disappeared. Ni ck Stone , Tre nt Zi mba chs and Stua rt
Ingl i s were in fine form for the Lions, who left their run
for the four just a little late. Ca me ron Purss rucked well
for Xavs and Josh Agi us, Andy Rya n and Mi ck Da rve l l
showed a bit around the packs.
The game of the day was to be the skirmish for second
at Waverley Park. The visiting St Bede’s Mentone Tigers
had been in good form, while De La had appeared
sluggish in recent weeks. Ben Corin returned to the line-

up and had a sizzling first term, booting three and
sending the Tigers into worry mode. De La’s speed
again proved trouble for the reigning premier and by
half-time, the margin was seven goals. It got worse for
the visitors, as it added just a goal beyond that point,
while the Dees added eight. Second spot, and the double
chance was not gifted, rather snatched by the Blue and
Golds who wanted it more. Damien “Damage” Hale was
best afield, while Luke Jarvis added another notch to his
belt and Corin and Mike Duggan kicked enough to win
the game themselves. Hiwad Shakaib, Jack Hellier and
Taxis Tyquin were best in the sash, who succumbed in
the end by a massive 87 points.
THIS WEEK
It is September and now the questions will be answered.
The carnival moves to the plain at Elsternwick, where
reputations are enhanced or damaged and premierships
won or lost.
Sunday’s First Semi-Final between St Bede’s Mentone
Tigers and University Blues sees the reigning premier a
strong favourite. An eighty-seven point thrashing is not
the best preparation for a knockout final, but it’s not the
end of the world either. Bede’s handled Blues with some
ease at a Sportscover clash early in the year, and
managed to crush them with one quarter of devastation
under the spires. On paper, the Tigers are a more talented
outfit, but the Varsity’s strength is its dogged
determination and belief that it can beat the best of them.
The biggest queries are how Blues will kick enough goals
to win and how they can stop an avalanche.
Ba rome te rs: SBMT: Anstey, Collins, Hellier, Phibbs and
anyone named Wintle. BLUES: Paton, Lowcock, Watts,
McConnell and Chadwick.
Ski nny: Expect a fiery contest, but expect a handy win to
the men of Mentone.
Saturday’s main event is a marquee match-up that
undoubtedly will attract a fair throng through the gates.
Old Xaverians dropped two of their last three after
clinching the double chance, while De La, perhaps
stuttering and puttering since their R10 clash with these
Xavs, ignited all burners in destroying the Tigers for the
second time this year. The Blue and Golds won at Toorak
Park in R1, while the Red and Blacks triumphed in a
classic at Waverley Park. On the Elsternwick track this
season, both teams are two wins from two starts, though
only errant kicking from Collegians saw De La stay that
way.
Ba rome te rs: OX: Handley, Fleming, Darvell, Agius and
Clarke DL S: Harrison, Hale, Fieldsend, Jarvis and
Duggan.
Ski nny: Xavs, hitherto masters of the Wick, but De La’s
fast midfield and fast start will threaten. Extra time
thriller. Toss a coin.

B SECTION
by William McCann
Well what a final round of footy. It had a little of
everything including a thriller to decide relegation, 3
clubs reaching for the calculators and a second spot
finally sorted.
Ill start out my report at Boss James were the match of
the day lived up to its billing with Hampton Rovers
facing formless Ormond. To state it mildly, the final
round encounter had big repercussions with the loser a
cert to be relegated to C Section.
Despite the wet weather, the expected big crowd
descended on Boss James Reserve for the next
installment of this great rivalry.
The pre match favourites Rovers had several big
inclusions and when they kicked the opener on the way
to a 22 points 1st quarter lead it looked how far
Hampton.
It continued with HRAFC adding another eight goals in
the second term capped to hold a very handy 28 points
advantage at the half. They would need every bit of that
lead as the tables turned in the second half.
Following an almighty bake Ormond came out a different
side in the third quarter and started making an impact
on the scoreboard. At the final change, the margin was
reduced to just nine points and the stage was set.
The final quarter was a tense one with the big crowd
getting involved in the game. The Rovers kicked a major
with Ormond responding almost immediately and a
further goal to the visitors reduced the margin to a kick
very late on. This remained for the last few minutes with
some desperate footy being played. In the end, the
Rovers held on to win by four points and the crowd
erupted as the final siren sounded.
I was not privy to the after post match revelry but after
losing the C section GF last year the taste of victory
would be sweet indeed. When prompted for information
my spies out at Rovers told me “If you remember the
party you weren’t there.
Out at the Complex Carey led at every change to secure
their B grade status for another year. It has been an
injury hit year for the young Carey side, and injuries are
what you can not afford with your 2nds get belted by
100 points on opening day. Nevertheless 3 wins from

the last 4 matches would be
encourages for season
2010.
For the Ts bigger battles
await after holding on by the
skin on their teeth. The
Bulleen boys must quickly
regroup and learn from out lapse of Saturday if they are
to go deep into September.
The Bloods fantastic second half of the season
continued at the Badlands via smashing the hapless
Wellers. With Team of the Century assistant coach OShaughnessy looking on Camberwell never really put up
a fight and the Bloods went away to an easy if fruitless
win.
The Bloods would be ultra disappointed to have missed
out given their record over the finalist; the lack of depth
and poor middle of the year proved fatal.
Another great if useless win was had by Blacks. With a
vague hint of finals the Student completed an
impressive double over the Premiership favourites who
perhaps had an eye to next week. For the Blackers Matty
O'Hara would have done his B&F chances no harm while
the big beef VanderLoo clearly got the better of his battle
with Horne with 6 of the best.
Like the Bloods, Blackers would be bitterly disappointed
about missing this final series losing twice to Carey
would be particularly galling for the faithful. The Redlegs
on the other hand would not be losing too much sleep
after finishing top and having it all to play for this week.
The other feature of Round 18 was the battle for second
spot out at the Rat Cage. After the customary slow start
SKOB got on top of and then put a very young
Snowdogs to the sword.
The game swung in a second quarter when SKOB
slammed on 7 goals to three and despite a gallant run at
the start of the 3rd term Bernards were never able to
regain the lead. SKOB grabbed a comfortable 5 goal win
with the pocket rocket Mick G kicking 5 sausage rolls.
For SKOB Shutdown Dave Sheehy with offspring
looking on showed the way down back. The veteran’s
attack on the ball and superior rig would have given his

younger Snowdogs plenty to think contemplate in the
post game.
Another one to please would have been Matt Murphy,
given the Luke Ball treatment in the middle of the year
this last quarter specialist has bounced back; his
hardness and strength have proved crucial to SKOB
holding the best second half of the year record (equal
with OMs & the Bloods)
The West Essendon boys were bested served by Dutchy
Holland who played a lone hand down back. While
Current St Kevin’s student and Snowdog Cook got
plenty of the ball and was only a couple of finishes away
from a stunning debut.
Pre vi e ws
SKOB vs. OM
To borrow Mike Atherton's line as he pondered the
lessons of Australia's defeat in the Oval Test, there is no
truism in sport as dumb as the claim a winning side
should never be changed.
I expect this lesson will have taken out at Righetti and if
the rumour file rings true SKOB will welcome back
plenty to the only finals side that actually won on the
weekend.
Having said all that, OMs will go in massive favourites,
from the time they humiliated the Wellers in Round 1 the
Redlegs have barely put a foot wrong.
If they allow Range Rovers into the Coburg City Oval,
the top of Collins St may well be toasting A Section
football in 2010.
Snowdogs vs. Ts
When Napoleon rode into the battle of waterloo he
remarked to his offsider “une perte ici pourrait être
désastreuse” (“a loss here could be disastrous”). I
assume similar comments are made before all
elimination finals but B section it is particularly so given
the A section, the Holy Grail is so close.
To the game: Snowdogs are in wretched form (losing
record in the 2nd half of the season) and there are
Bolivian soccer teams with more height while the Ts
come off a lost to the relegation battled OC.
All things considered I fancy BI to feed Rambo who will
be simply too big & too good for the quick and skilful
but P plated Bernards.

Premiership betting has been sent into a spin, onetime odds-on favourites Caulfield offered little
against a far more polished MHSOB unit and with
Oakleigh in arguably the best form of all three
teams, the Fields have been eased to the third line
of betting as they stare a straight sets elimination
from the finals right in the face.

Slashing rain welcomed the two premier teams of
C Section at the Junction Oval, Caulfield favourite
with the bookies and wider VAFA community to
jump straight into the Grand Final with a third
victory over MHSOB for 2009. Moments into the
game however, the private school fraternity looked
worried in their Gant pullovers as Matthew White
delivered a crunching hip and shoulder, the ball
fizzing to Unicorn full-forward Matthew HamiltonHo for an early goal to MHSOB. Piling on another
four unanswered majors, MHSOB looked like men
playing boys as they had all the running, gigantic
Unicorn ruckman Roger McIntyre owning the
centre square and around the ground stoppages.

demolition of a very disappointing Caulfield.
Field forward dynamo
Andrew Slevison had
little to no impact, wearing a white doona around
his knee, he was silenced by Andrew “The Glove”
Villani in a masterful display of defending.

Heading into the finals with a thumping of MHSOB,
Oakleigh looked to have all the form over
Beaumaris who suffered a shock Round 18 loss to
cellar dwellers Monash Blues at home. Both sides
showed their desperation early, a tight struggle
prevailed as goals were put on the backburner to
uncompromising defence. Oakleigh kicked the sole
goal of the first term, Beaumaris firing back with
three in the second to enter the main break with a
slight nine point advantage. The Sharks No.1
player Mark Ensor was playing a stellar game,
quelling the influence of Krusher go-to-man Trevor
Bromely.
Caulfield skipper and mini mouse Simon Widjaja
heeded the call in the second term, the Fields
chipping away at the lead to get within a kick into
the third quarter as MHSOB were in dire need of a
spark to regain their early ascendency. Enter Roger
McIntyre. Thrust forward, the big man snaffled two
marks and kicked truly to inspire the Unicorns as
they edged back clear at orange time. The last
quarter was simply a MHSOB clinic, exemplified by
an uncharacteristic turnover from Ben Carboni
which Steve “Devo” Harrison duly accepted and
converted by foot from outside the fifty metre arc
to send the South Yarra banter vibe into raptures.
Matthew Hamilton-Ho applied the icing on the cake
late, his sixth goal a delightful snap as MHSOB
Into the third stanza, the game started to break
open with the clean skills and big bodies of
Oakleigh starting to get on top of the smaller
Sharks. Brothers Hogan were excellent in the
middle, they started to feed Bromely and Barrand
with some pinpoint delivery. Scott Gower down the
other end was quiet, his form slump continuing as
Beaumaris found little in the tank to limp out of
2009 with a 27 point loss. The Krushers are
coming, next stop Sandringham and a date with
Caulfield.

Moving from the Junction Oval to Sandringham,
Oakleigh march into this game with all the
confidence and runs on the board to be pronounced
favourites. They were the sole team to inflict a loss
upon Caulfield in the regular season and were only
a point shy from making it back to back defeats on
the one time flag fancies in Round 12.
The most alarming point from last week’s loss to
MHSOB was Caulfield’s inability to get their game
plan into full swing against bigger bodies,
something sure to be magnified against Oakleigh
at the usually windswept Port Philip Bay venue.
Fields defenders Strain and Docker both had a
crack at Hamilton-Ho and failed miserably last
week, Bromely and Edwards this week creating an
even bigger problem on paper coupled in with Lee
Barrand floating down into the fifty.
Caulfield will look to avoid a similar fate to
Rupertswood in 2007, they too dominated the
home and away season but come September, fell
by the wayside to drop out of premiership running
with straight sets defeats.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME...
Ne w Ki d s o n th e Bl o ck: Point
Cook Football Club, which
boasts Deputy Prime Minister
Julia Gillard as its Number One
Ticket Holder, will join the VAFA
competition in season 2010.
Point Cook, which fields
fourteen junior teams in the
Western
Region
Football
League, will become the VAFA’s
74th member club.
The Bulldogs’ home is adjacent to Sanctuary Lakes
Golf Course in Melbourne’s burgeoning west. A
decision will be made over the coming months on
whether Point Cook will join D4 with two teams or
whether it will spend its first year in the Club XVIII
competition.
F o ot b a l l Go d s: Last Sunday, North
Old Boys Reserves Coach John Rush
was coaching his side in the 1st semi
final against Whitefriars at Central
Reserve. As well as the coaching
butterflies, Rushy had other reasons
to be nervous. His wife Katrina was
sitting in the car, very very pregnant. The football
gods smiled and delivered, Rushy's boys got over
the line with a 9 goal towelling and then some hours
later Katrina gave birth to Miller Grace (7lbs). From
all reports mum, daughter, dad and the team are
doing well.
Ne w F o o ty a n yo ne ? One match grade
almost new red Sherrin available
free of charge. Pick up from the
roof of grandstand at Central
Reserve, where it landed after one huge
hoof and big blast of wind.
We’ve all seen the field umpires
enter the ground, followed by the
boundary men and then the
goalies, doing the military two
step. Last week at Garvey Oval ,
however, the arbiters entered the
field lined up, side by side, causing bemused
spectators to watch them all the way to the centre
circle. “Watch,” said one, “I think they’re about to
link arms and do the Can-Can!”

Hoodoo? Xavs have not beaten De La in a final since

them only once since, in the 1993 second-semi,
which the Blue and Golds won before losing to
collegians in the Granny.
Congratulations to Bentleigh’s Adam

has been a key player in his team’s
success thus far this year.

Congrats to Corey Bannister of

The event caused a massive

more clubs have brought in their

Back in R17, one of St Bernard’s favourite sons
played his 250th game - Ben ‘Hogi12’ Hogan. Ben is
another from the Hogan dynasty to have a
distinguished St Bernard’s career. Hogi has had
many personal highlights culminating in winning the
2002 ‘A’ Grade Premiership, joining his father Peter
(1975) as an A Grade Premiership player. Recently
Hogi’s football has undergone a renaissance and he
has had a big impact on the senior team with his
pace, penetrating left foot and his ability to keep his
feet under pressure. Once known as a bit of a lad,
Ben has matured with the support and guidance of
his beautiful wife Melinda and now plays an
important role in the senior leadership group. Hogi
joins elite company with only six other players in St
Bernard’s history managing to reach 250 games and
Hogi is the only player to reach the milestone and
play in an A Grade premiership (2002).
Congratulations Hogi12 !

by Di Langton
Do you tip with your head or your heart? Form or
sentiment? Could you tip your sworn enemy? I
won my footy tipping comp last week, one of
those mega online AFL ones that encompass
work-related footy tipping around the country.
Last Sunday night, getting warm on the couch
after a bone chilling afternoon at Central Reserve,
I filled up on chicken curry and self-loathing as I
yelled ‘Go Pies’ at the telly. I needed them to get
home to make me six for the round …and a laydown mazaire for the gorillas on offer. But I’d just
watched Fitzroy thump Friars by 13 goals so had
good reason to question my tipping prowess,
besides, I should know better than to tip the Filth
(their official name in my family) who let both the
game and third pozzie slip. Luckily I had a
marginally better margin than BenCooper72 and
held onto the sizeable purse which should fund my
September festivities nicely, if I didn’t feel this
burning need to donate it to charity in order to
cleanse myself.
new home at full forward,
his three goals for the
term matched by Brennan
who is just as happy to
run and chase, keep his
feet and checkside it from
45 on the boundary. Ande rson was creative and
A a ron Ta yl or refused to yield (he could’ve bought
shares in Elastoplast he was so swaddled by half
time) but it was an otherwise morbid quarter for
Werribee. Supply out of the Rupo back and centre
hurt like gunfire, P odol cza k shining, and they took
a forty point lead into the St Bernards digs at half
time.
Two rapid goals from the left foot of Fastuca and
the Tigers looked dangerous in the third, repelling
the Rupo attacks with greater determination. As
the sun came out briefly late in the quarter,
Spinner moved to defence and stopped the rot,
Whi te he a d sent forward where he duly goaled but
the fighting Bees had dragged the deficit back to
27 points as the siren blew 3/4 time. Schibeci
scored his second major in the first two minutes
of the last quarter, but the well-oiled Rupo
machine shut down most of the Tigers attacking
endeavours. Rowdy Le e was frustrated, unable to
gain any leverage and the dagger to the Tiger heart
struck in the 17th minute when the umpire
deemed he ran too far, the turnover resulting in a
goal to West from a laces-out pass from B re nna n
on the forward flank. It was all over with a dozen
minutes of crowd muzak to fill in the time, Rupo
by 6 goals.
SECOND SEMI REVIEW
Westward Saturday to the Snake Pit to see the top
two duke it out, Rupertswood convincing winners
and thoroughly deserving of their place in the big
show and promotion to C grade. Werribee didn’t
go down with a whimper; this often fiery clash had
some sensational examples of the Tigers’
enormous ticker. Interestingly, Rupo has a
tendency to start slowly and has trailed Werribee
in every first term this year. The semi was no
different and the Tigers saluted early via Fastuca
and Wa yne Pe l a r, yet did not fully capitalise on
Rupo’s first term lethargy. They won the
clearances and inside fifties, Bellegante was
making his presence felt in the middle and
B re nna n was kept quiet as he lurked across centre
half forward, but the Tigers took just a five point
lead at the huddle. Sure enough, Rupo put the foot
down in the second term with Spinner enjoying his

the second term. Granted, they were missing
players like Ma rche si and Woods (although they
certainly offer no excuses), but the Fitzroy
backline was rock solid, working hard to help
each other while the forward setup was
unstoppable, spearheaded by B orl a nd who kicked

Crea who managed 3 goals despite the poor

separated the two sides at the final break but
S i mon Ta yl or implored his players to stick to the
defensive side of their men, and not ‘slack off.’
The Roys completely outplayed their opponents,
compelling as they hijacked any Friar notion of
finals advancement, but the large Fitzroy
contingent held its collective breath all the way to
the final siren; incredulous at what it had just
witnessed: a 13 goal towelling to propel it
headlong into today’s showdown.
PRELIMINARY FINAL PREVIEW
Both teams have the ability to jump out of the
blocks early. Nineteen year old B orl a nd is in
superb form and avenues to him will be hard to
shut down. Me i ghe n, D ul l a rd and O ’ Re i l l y are
experienced campaigners that will help steer the
ship crewed by many fast, exciting young players
that may give Werribee the Rupo-horrors. Strong
input from B i ggs, St ol t z and S e ddon will be
needed. On the other hand Werribee has its share
of highly talented youth in players such as
S chi be ci and B e l l e ga nt e , while the Pe l a r and
Taylor clansmen are a formidable force indeed.
The consistency of A nd e r so n, D e a n and
P a l mi ngton will be crucial to a Tigers win, while
the x factor may just be Cam Lee if he can inveigle
his unique influence on the game. Often the
Preliminary is the most exciting game in a finals
series, and I think this one will definitely go to the
wire. Fitzroy has shown it can kick a big score
and shut down opponents at the same time, while
the Werribee juggernaut is unlikely to falter two
weeks on end. This tipping caper is tricky, but on
semi final form (plus sentiment) I’m going with
the Roys by 7 points.

UMPIRES CORNER
VAFA IN THE MEDIA
SATURDAY
by Steve McCarthy & Leah Gallagher
Bi g mi l e stone s
This finals weekend we see two of our Life Members clock up
their 350th VAFA ga me s in Da vi d Hi ndl e and Anthony
Si mpson.
Da vi d has certainly taken a while to reach that milestone due
to the fact that he had a 23 year break in the middle.
He joined the VAFA in 1969 as a field umpire after 4 years and
61 games with the VFL Reserve Grade panel and continued
field umpiring until his “retirement” in 1983. On the field, his
highlights included the A section preliminary final and C
section grand final in 1979. 5 consecutive A se cti on gra nd
fi na l s as a boundary umpire between 1971 and 1975. 2
boundary umpire games at the MCG in the 1973 Carnival.
Best game ever was the 1973 Pa rksi de /Al phi ngton clash.
He returned to the VAFA in 2007 and took up the flags and
soon progressed to A se cti on. He’s now looking towards that
400th game. David’s message to the youngsters is “You will
get out of umpiring as much as you are prepared to put in.”
Anthony (Si mmo) joined the VAFA in 1993 as part of a great
umpiring family. His father Gra ha m umpired over 300 games,
as did his brother Pe te r. His nephew Ma tthe w (Peter’s son)
is running with us at the moment and recently reached 150
games. Si mmo’s son Mi cha e l umpired with us last year and
it was a highlight doing a couple of games together. Anthony
(a former goal umpire) lists his highlights as 2 C section
senior grand finals and 2 D4 reserves grand finals more
recently as a field umpire. Anthony would like to thank his
wife Anne and children Mi cha e l , Joshua , Emma and Brooke
for their support over the years. His parents Gra ha m a nd
Ma ri e have seen nearly every game he has umpired. His dad
has travelled so far and wide he should be called
Mr. Me l wa ys. Maybe Si mmo will get him a GPS for Fathers
Day. Si mmo would like to thank all the VAFA clubs and the
VAFAUA family who have made all this possible.

Everyone is now into the swing, with all sections participating
in finals. Congratulations to teams last week, who have won
the right to play in a higher section for season 2010 and in
some sections this weekend the last team to be promoted will
be known also.
Leader Community Newspapers produces 30 mastheads weekly
across Melbourne, covering all the VAFA.
Punctua l ??
We constantly have issues with umpires arriving late to their
games and this absolutely shoul dn’ t be happening during
finals. Lucky we’ve got blokes like Pa tri ck Coul tha rd. Pa ddy
did the right thing last Sa turda y by arriving at Garvey Oval
over one hour before the start. Pity he was appointed to the
Sunda y game. We love your conscientiousness Pa ddy, but
25 hours before the first bounce is not really necessary.
From match reports to feature stories, reporters Paul Amy,
Brad Beitzel, Megan Hurstwaite and Michael Gleeson have your
VAFA news covered.

Evo goe s Gre e n
Doing the right thing last Saturday Ja son (Evo) Eva ns did the
right thing and caught public transport to his game at the
Sca mme l l Re se rve in Oa kl e i gh. He jumped on the bus at
Ormond station and told the driver, “G’day mate, I need to get
to the Scammell Reserve which is behind the Oakleigh Bowlo.
I’ve gotta umpire a final today and with this weather can you
get me real close please?” As the bus headed along North
Road it failed to stop at the bus stop a bit before the bowling
club. Suddenly he stops right across from Scammell (in
between bus stops) and the driver says to Evo, “I’ve been
giving it to you umpires for years, ‘bout time I gave
something back.”
Great influence Evo, the new Minister for Transport.
Angry AD
Gotta hate it when you finish your reserves game and you get
to the room to find the senior blokes taking over with their
gear everywhere. Even worse when just about everything in
the room ends up on top of your bag. Seems like serial
prankster Joe y Ha rtwi g was at his best last Sunday. Let’s just
say the text message AD left Joe y was a tad colourful. There
will be retribution.
Soci a l
A Se cti on Gra nd F i na l Brunch is on again with limited seats;
get your name to one of the table captains quickly as half the
venue is booked. Payment will be in advance for this function,
check with Rob Sne ddon and or Gra nt Wa rdrop for cost.
Gol f Da y
The VAFAUA charity golf day is back at Waterford Valley (the
place where your golf balls wear swimming trunks, cause
they like a dip), be ready for a October 4th, 12 midday hit off.
Cost is $80.00 to be able to rally drive as well.
Pub run
Just because finals have come and you are not appointed to
a game remember to still attend training to support you
mates who are still going around. Just as important is to get
down for the last night of training where we end up at the
Wick while those poor buggers keep running around. Look
forward to the 17th September night.
RESPECT THE UMPIRE – RESPECT THE GAME!!

D2 SECTION
by Caillin O’Shannessy
The first week of finals produced two close
encounters for the favoured teams, who eventually
managed to get on top of their opponents. If last
weekend was anything to go by, the next two weeks
will be an exciting test for the remaining teams.
Banyule’s season comes to a finish, losing to
Therry Penola in blustery conditions at Alec Gillon
Oval. Therry Penola advance to the preliminary
final after taking control early with five goals in the
first quarter whilst holding Banyule to none. At
three quarter time Therry lead by seven goals but
Banyule had the wind behind them in the last. With
nothing to lose it was time for Banyule to throw
caution to the wind, and give absolutely everything
to keep their season alive. Banyule held Therry
goalless in the last quarter and were able to pile on
five of their own, however it wasn’t enough and
Therry Penola were able to hold on to a determined
eight point victory. Ashley Mills was dynamic for
Therry Penola in the guts, and Brent Kenny
outstanding in defence. Core y Ba nni ste r and
Justi n Crotty both kicked three goals, and this
takes Ba nni ste r’s tally for the season to 100, a
sterling effort.
Williamstown held only a
seven point buffer.
Williamstown came out in
the crucial third quarter
with a big effort to exert
some physical pressure on the Pirates, but this
tactic backfired as full back Be n Hyne s was sent off
for an overenthusiastic attempt to spoil. Peninsula
responded to the pressure well, and really took
advantage of the CY’s playing one man short. Tim
Scarpel la excelled at half forward, while Brett
Brisbane at full back also battled well. Captain
Shaun Pa yze despite an ankle injury showed his
leadership and class all over the field. To
Williamstown’s credit they fought back late in the
quarter and were able to bring the margin back to
seven points at the final break. This proved too
difficult a task however, as Peninsula’s Ste fan
Ba rbour and Al Wood dominated the stoppages,
and looked ominous with Jim Coghl a n & John
Romboti s as forward targets.
Peninsula have earnt themselves a week off and a
spot in the 2009 Grand Final after defeating a
gallant Williamstown side. It was obvious from the
outset that a grand final berth was at stake in an
intense and tightly contested first quarter, that saw
wasted opportunities from Peninsula keep
Williamstown in the game. In the second stanza
Williamstown began to control the match, and
despite Stua rt Gri gg repelling many of the CY’s
attacks, they were able to gain scoreboard
ascendancy after some good football from Tim
Whee l er. Again though, the dominance was not
reflected on the scoreboard, and at half time
The result sees Williamstown take on Therry
Penola this Sunday at central reserve in the
preliminary final, with the winner to meet a rested
Peninsula side. The last time these two teams met,
in round 10, Therry Penola got the best of
Williamstown by five goals, however the ledger
stands at one all throughout the season. It should
be a very interesting match and the winner will
certainly deserve their spot in the Grand Final.
Peninsula have lost only two games this year, and
they were way back in rounds three and four. This
will give the Pirates plenty of confidence come two
weeks time, although whoever they meet will have
a belief they can win, as Peninsula’s two losses
came at the hands of Williamstown and Therry
Penola.

. . . Retrospective
5 YEARS AGO – 2004
by Geoff Reilley
Both the A Section first and second semi-final results were very
one sided even though both were tight contests up until half time.
Both matches were previewed by scribe, Jonathan Horn, and we
will look at his predictions further down the page. In the first semi,
Old Trinity started slowly but had taken the lead from Marcellin
Old Collegians at half time, albeit narrowly (9 points).
Reminiscent of recent weeks, Marcellin’s work rate fell away and
with Andrew Ramsden leading the pack, Trinity too a stranglehold
at three quarter time and blew the Eagles away in the last to win
17.14 to 7.14. Best players – Ramsden (3), S Kennedy, L
Kennedy, T Van Der Venne, Neville, L Deane-Johns (Trinity)
and Dineen, Browne, Cox, Dobson, Hermans, Thiesz
(Marcellin). On that form Trinity could worry either of the top two
teams the following week. The second semi saw Uni Blues ahead
on the score board at half time (6.4 to 4.9) but St Bernards had
missed a number of opportunities in front of the big sticks. Led by
Ross Young in the third quarter, the Blues turned up the heat and
started to cut the Bernies to pieces with the Essendon boys
continuing to fail to make the most of their scoring chances. It was
‘a walk in the park’ for the Blues in the last quarter with goals
coming all too easily and the final score of 20.12 to 11.18 confirmed
the students as favourites for the flag. Best players – Paterson,
Scambler (7), Roydhouse, Lowcock, Young (3), Hayter (Uni
Blues) and McIntyre, Wilkinson, D Jordan (4), B Jordan,
O’Sullivan, Blunt (St Bernards).
Jono Horn, the VAFA’s classiest columnist (I wouldn’t miss ‘The
Wednesday Horn’ for quids - GR), had tipped Marcellin in the
first semi but evened the ledger by predicting the Blues in the
second.
In B Section, it was a highly entertaining first semi-final with St
Bedes Mentone Tigers only just succumbing to Old Ivanhoe
12.10 to 11.13. It had been all locked up at three quarter time and it
was OI’s Mark Luxon kicking two goals in the last two minutes that
snatched the game from the Tigers. Best players – Low, Luxon (5),
Curatolo, Lochran, Gieschen, Quinlan (Old Ivanhoe) and
Drury, Kane, Scafidi, M Wintle, Osborne, Hecker (SBMT). St
Kevins came from three points down at half time to defeat
Collegians 17.4 to 11.10 in the second semi final and advance to
the top section for the ensuing season. Best players – L Mahoney,
Brady, Lucas (3), Mulgrew, Simpson, P O’Keefe (SKOBS) and
Davidson, Blumfield, Dixon, A Baxter, Hosking (4), C Holst
(Collegians).
MHSOB won the right to again challenge Caulfield
Grammarians after defeating Monash Blues in the C Section
preliminary final, 11.16 to 5.9. Best players – McCully, Brain,
Fairchild, Smith, Cassell, Rosman (MHSOB) and Smyth,
Smith, Main, O’Sullivan, Janssen, Bolton (Monash). Banyule
thrashed Fitzroy Reds in the D1 preliminary final 19.17 to 8.8.
Best players – Willmore, Plant, Williams, O’Connell (4), Wilson,
32
Jones (Banyule) and Abbott,
Rawlins, Cianchi, Bahr,
McGrath, Evans (Fitzroy).
Old Carey had a huge win in
the D2 preliminary final over
Old Geelong 20.17 to 8.8.
Best players – StewartHolmes, Everett, Kent (3), White (4), Vasilopoulos (Old Carey)
and Cannon, Stinchcombe, Vickers-Willis (3), T Paul, W Paul
(Old Geelong).
10 YEARS AGO – 1999
St Kevins Old Boys won the A Section first semi final after
controlling the game at half time 10.11 to 4.2, encountering a strong
fight back by Old Ivanhoe in the third quarter and meeting a further
challenge in the last term; winning score – 14.14 to 13.6. Best
players – Fraser, Lucas (5), M Dollman, Powell, Curtis, Callery
(SKOBS) and Douglas, Lochran, R Weddle (3), McKie, Haros,
Jenkins (OI). In the second semi final the highly favoured Old
Melburnians lowered their colours to Old Xaverians who had
overcome indifferent mid-season form to now have a chance for
their fifth consecutive premiership. OM’s won the first quarter but
then the Xavs controlled the game with their multi talented
forwards all contributing strongly. Final score 21.7 to 14.5. Best
players – Bowen, Cranage, Stoney, Woodruff, R Dillon, Blood
(Xaverians) and Roberts, Topakas (5), Pirouet, Kennedy, L
Bunn, S Theodore (OM’s).
In the B Section first semi, Mazenod trailed all day but overhauled
Old Brighton in the dying moments for a 13.15 to 13.10 victory.
Best players – Polan, Meehan, O’Donaghue, Kavanagh, Parry,
Hanley (Mazenod) and Williams, Logan, Fitzgerald, Alderson,
S Gadsden, Jackson (OB). The second semi final was another
close affair with Old Trinity proving too strong in the last quarter
to win 8.14 to MHSOB 7.11. Best players – C Phillips, Hatfield,
Sutcliffe, Stickland (4), Stephens, L Kennedy (OT) and
Limbrick, McIntyre, Gerner, Fairchild, Thompson, Simpson
(MHSOB).
Whitefriars bounced back in the C Section preliminary final
over Old Geelong with the result never in doubt from half time;
final score 15.16 to 6.8. Best players – Houston, Law, M Carbone,
Carrigg (5), Bateman, Northey (Whitefriars) and Taylor, Neeld,
Middleton, J Paul, L Wilson, Seymour (OG). In the D Section
preliminary Monash Blues were forced to play catch up footy all
day but could not overcome Bulleen Templestowe’s determination
and went down 6.5 to 9.6. Best players – Young, N Bone, George,
Alexander, Tulloch, Glover (BT) and Smith, McGee, Furnell,
Farmer, Campbell, Creamer (Monash). Oakleigh won the E
Blue preliminary final 9.3 to St Pats Mentone 7.13. Best players
– S Kitts, R Marshall, C Marshall, Knapper, Taylor, Heverin
(Oakleigh) and M Barr, M Dixon, Matt Sullivan, Sebire, Perrin,
V
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2009
Michael Sullivan (St Pats). Another low scoring prelim final saw
Fitzroy Reds successful over West Brunswick in E White
Section, 8.1 to 4.9. Best players – P Jackson, Doyle, Hanlon,
Clarke, T Mitchell, Greenwood (Fitzroy) and Ward, Lewis,
Malone, P Hamilton, O’Brien, Coonan (West Brunswick). Eley
Park won the F Section prelim over Old Westbourne 14.20 to
14.3. Best players – Hook, Trotter, Lenarcic (6), Hawley,
Morrison, Alexandridis (Eley Park) and Taylor, S Craig, A
Christo, Herron, King, A Horsburgh (Old Westbourne).
20 YEARS AGO – 1989
Marcellin ended Uni Blues’ season in the A Section first semi
with a convincing 11.10 to 6.13 victory. It was a great last quarter
by the Eagles (7 goals to 2) with best players – Origlasso, Hewitt,
Cooper, S Boysen (5), Gallagher, Zannoni (Marcellin) and
McCarty, Worsley, Gunn, Allen, Yandell, Hazeldine (Uni
Blues). In a fluctuating second semi final the scores went according
the wind in the first three quarters but it was Ormond, against the
wind in the last term, who won the right to contest another Grand
Final with a 13.6 to 8.12 victory. Best players – Paul Cox,
Gilmore, McCooke, Jobling (4), Paul McDonald, Russell
(Ormond) and Wright, Berzins (4), Pollock, Williams, Wallace,
Galbraith (Collegians).
In B Section, Old Brighton won the first semi over Bulleen
Templestowe 15.14 to 11.21. Best players – James, Pryor, Woff,
Shippen (4), Sarau, Monument (OB) and Tsiotinas, Cameron,
Murtic, Smythe, McInerney, George (BT). A great second semi
saw Therry overcome De La Salle 16.12 to 14.13. Best players –

Reddick, Ramsay (Therry) and Mullins, Tully (5), Wright,
Campbell, Knuppel (DLS).
In the C Section preliminary final Old Haileybury made short
work of St Kilda CBCOB 18.16 to 5.9 and could not wait to have
another crack at Banyule the following week. Best players –
Phillips, Connell, McKenzie, Walden (5), Snowball, Gerny
(OH) and LaFontaine, Struth, Lake, Capiron, Driscoll, Buzza
(StKilda). Thomastown defeated Whitefriars in an exciting D
Section preliminary final 13.10 to 12.11. Best players – A

(Thomastown) and Strike, Sutton, Crowe, Pratt (5), Houston,
McAuliffe (Whitefriars). St Bedes won the E Section prelim 11.5
from Aquinas 7.10. Best players – Riordan, Newport, Seeley,
Bracchi, M Beasley, Lannan (St Bedes) and Spiess, Tarulli,
Grierson, Vankerhaven, Whitfield, O’Toole (Aquinas). St
Andrews were too strong for Uni Reds in the F Section prelim
13.16 to 7.10. Best players – Ashby, Browne, funnel, Mauro (3),
Hibbert, Macdonald (St Andrews) and Condon, Gosdschan,
Joseland, Jennens, Moloney, Upfill (Uni Reds).
30 YEARS AGO – 1979
Uni Blacks defeated Ormond in the A Section first semi 19.9 to
15.20. Best players – Wimes, Cunningham, Costello, Perrett (4),
S Gill, C Cordner (Blacks) and Fisher (4), Crump, Parisi,
Naylor, Hardham, Andrews (Ormond). Uni Blues fended off a
late challenge from De La Salle in the second semi final to win
V

Kauffman, Bedford, Dobbie (Blues) and Nugent, Dunn,
McHenry, Donegan, Hollier, B Bourke (DLS).
In B Section, Old Xaverians took control at half time and ran out
winners of the first semi over Collegians 18.12 to 10.12. Best
players – Morrissey, Curtain (10), Brimacombe, Caleo,
Sierakowski, O’Hurley (Xavs) and Roach (4), Cook, Taylor,
Milford, T Loder, Nethersole (Collegians). It was AJAX with
more accurate kicking who took the second semi from Marcellin
20.11 to 14.23. Best players – Basser (9), Korn, Bromberg, Kaye
(4), Feldpicer, R Marks (AJAX) and Butler, Gartner, T Dillon,
M Dillon, Toomey, J Jones (Marcellin).
St Kilda CBCOB won the C Section preliminary 18.11 to 16.17
from Old Brighton. Best players – Kellaway, Coates, Meehan
(5), Carroll, Collins (3), Dynon (St Kilda) and King (4), Murphy,
Priestley, Gedye, Hill, Nicholson (OB). Bulleen Templestowe
overpowered State Bank in the D Section prelim 19.13 to 10.17.
Best players – Clark (4), D’Agostino, Dozzi, Gilmore, Lochart,
Ling (BT) and Lenehan, Allen (5), Webster, Jeffery, Bennett,
Curnick (SB). AMP Society defeated North Brunswick in the F
Section prelim 13.13 to 13.3. Best players – Crottie, Gates,
Searle, Pottenger, McLeod, McKinnon (AMP) and D Dimarco,
Piccolo, S Scullin (5), Kenney (4), Payne, Kerrin (NB). St Pius
easily won the F Section prelim 16.25 to 6.10 over Brunswick,
Best players – Coyle, D French, Fisher, Froud, Rosbrook (4), M
Daniel (St Pius) and Egan, Lyons, Sheehan, Chaplin, Owens,

Old Paradians won the A Section first semi 19.12 to Collegians
14.12. Best players – Williams, Kendall (4), Quinlan, Kiss,
Gordon, Duke (Parade) and Crow, Storan, Lucas, Burley, Boag
(3), Tucker (Collegians). The second semi went to Coburg over
Ormond 16.14 to 11.15. Best – Callesen, N Beattie, Scanlon, L
Beattie, T Salter (4), Parkes (Coburg) and Cameron, R Wood
(5), Carr, B Finlayson, Voight, R Finlayson (Ormond).
The B Section first semi final was won by St Bernards, 10.14 to
Old Scotch 7.19. Best players – McCann, Crennan, Daffy,
Sheehan, J Perrett, Hannaberry (St Bernards) and Hughes,
Anderson, Beaurepaire, Gillies, Stokes, Hiddleston (Scotch).
50 YEARS AGO – 1959
Collegians convincingly defeated University Blacks in the A
Section first semi final 9.17 to 7.5. Collegians’ pace was the main
factor in the win and they managed to overcome the Black’s ruck
advantage with brilliant roving. Best players – G Hibbins,
McDonald, Scott, Powell, Jobling, Opie (Collegians) and B Roet,
Porter, Browne (3), Steer, M Winneke, Linsten (Blacks). Old
Scotch scored decisively from Old Xaverians in the A Section
second semi final 10.14 to 6.18 to advance to the grand final. The
Xavs could not cope with the pace and teamwork of the Cardinals
whose excellent second quarter probably sealed the game. Best
players – Marquard, C Melville, Harkness, M Russell (3),
Eggleston, K Melville (Scotch) and Collopy, Malone, Drum,
McIsaacs, Carroll, Slattery (Xavs).

D3 SECTION
by Stephen Clarke
Two finals have been played out and predictably at
least, the scores were close. When I was quizzed
on this grade on Inner FM at the same time there
was a frenzied mission to get in contact with
D e nni s G r a ce , the coach of Elsternwick, to
comment also on D3. My comments were that this
grade baring the top side was very difficult to
forecast a clear finals group, a clear easy beat as all
sides offered something different but of similar
quality. I was happy to go with debutants St
Francis Xavier on Saturday over the dominant
Bentleigh unit whilst the Sunday game looked all
too tough to call, settling on St Mary’s. Then as
Dennis was located he emphasised the similarity
between our two top ranked sides and stated it will
come down to ‘which running side gets on top
early and keeps getting the ball.’ Exactly right. And
when you need to get on top you go to those you
can entrust with the job. I appreciate that this is
never easy as that gun player might not play or be
injured. And that goes from A Grade right through
to us and the examples are glaring. Collegians
needed a win at Harry Trott over the top side last
week to make finals. Call on Shura Ta ft straight
from Bendigo St studios to put in a typical brilliant
display. The win was completed but finals eluded
them just by percentage.
Jump to C Grade and Caulfield would only be
beaten if Ma t t H a m i l t on- H o could score in
abundance. He did, they won. Another go to man
successful. Or in D2 where at three quarter time
the Pirates were challenged by Williamstown but
the experience of Pa yze shines through.
S c o tt
from
and
D i m a kopo ul o s. In the
second term the less fancied
side got well on top, with on
ballers Mcna l l y, Anthony P ryor, Pa bts driving the
ball forward with purpose. Bentleigh were doing
enough to stay in touch and some inaccurate
kicking cost St Francis an even bigger half time
lead. It ended at the half with a 23 point advantage
to the Beaconsfield boys. Things were still looking
ok for them early in the third stanza. But suddenly
S ha n A da wa y got on the end of some good fielding
kicking and the Bentleigh side started their run.
There’s a great problem you face when this side
win possession in spades – their finishers are
classy and don’t need encouragement. S ha n
F e rgus has been good for 30 odd goals thus far
and he kicked a couple of crucialsix pointers along
with magnificent Ma gni ci fo and Ai ke n. With the X
men holding a 2 point lead at three quarter time,
coach Lenders pleaded with the guys for one last
effort, as the reward was a week off and a quick
way to the Grand Final and promotion. But in the
last term, Bentleigh kicked the first goal to hit the
front for the first time of the day and the Xmen
dropped their heads. The favourites ended up
running away with a 4 goal win. Bentleigh showed
experience and took their chance. With a week off
they must be respected enormously as flag
favourites. They remain unbeaten against the
challengers remaining. The new kids on the block
got their second half wrong with a bit of panic
setting in amongst their
lower tier players. So time to regroup and rethink
how they go about September now as they get
another chance.
Saturday started windy and stayed that way
throughout although Scammell reserve presented
a lovely flat deck with good grass cover to host our
main final. Robe rtson and La wr y were obvious
inclusions for the Premierships favourites. In the
first term the X men were well on top with some
pressure around the ball and great running play
Sunday, the weather was ok but nothing flash. This
was a tantalising affair on paper as Elsternwick
boasted a recent win against the recently merged St
Mary’s Salesian and their last round heroics, well

almost heroics stood them in good stead to win
this. Two things came to mind when I arrived at the
ground. Sca mme l l has that dead pocket at the
North Road end which sucks in visitors and it’s a
ground where you can find a cheap kick and gain
confidence. In the first half the ‘Wicks kicked the
ball to dead zones too much and SMS were able to
get the ball easily. Early on it was A mpt, Bonni ci
and R obi nson that could just get the phase
completed for the yellow and black and ensure the
forwards had shots on goal. Elsternwick allowed
the opposition so many easy possessions early in
the game it was frustrating. Too many players did
not set their own agendas but played reactionary
football. Coach G ra ce was beside himself by the
last change and pleaded with his players to run
hard as SMS are a heavy side and the likes of
Ol dfi e l d and S te ve ns had to be challenged even if
they were kicking into a breeze. For the second
time in 2 weeks the ‘Wicks flew home as players
were more desperate and the run was more
frenzied. 8 straight goals against the wind saw
them come so close but the finish would end up
short by 14 points. Lachie Bedingfield who has
been herculan all of season 2009 was instrumental
in the John Hewson like ‘fightback’ and the
Ma hony boys in Cra i g and B ri a n did their club,
their family and themselves proud. Gra nt Ca me ron
was very good in the ruck and Aaron Caratello
proved he has been a good find for the old firm.
Coach Gra ce has ended his term now after six
great years with the club and his passion for
football and this club are obvious for all to see.

TIPS –
St F ra nci s Xa vi e r versus St Mary’s Salesian
The holy battle is on for young and old today. Round
six at Ferndale Park saw a win to the home side by
12 points whilst at Beaconsfield in round twelve the
home side got up in dreadful conditions by four
goals.
Shall we expect a close game? Of course, this is D3
after all . . .
Going with the X Men to win and gain promotion.
Say 9 points.

against Kew, with the victor becoming the third side to
achieve promotion. South will be disappointed with the
margin; however can be proud of their year. With such a
young side they can look to 2010 with confidence.
by Duncan Palmer
LaTrobe University joined Albert Park in promotion to D3
on the weekend after a short sojourn in D4 that they
hope will be marked by a flag. LaTrobe has long been
considered a potential powerhouse of the VAFA with a
large student base to draw on including residential
colleges; however they have also had to contend with
NFL and EDFL clubs on their doorstep, prepared to offer
significant incentives for cash-shy students. Recent
years have seen a gradual slide down the grades from
D1. This year, with fresh faces involved at committee
level and club legend Dean Sheldrick having a year’s
coaching experience under his belt, they have been able
to recruit strongly and play some exciting football. It
remains to be seen how they will contend with Albert
Park, however Saturday’s victory was a good start.
It is getting close to the Team of the Year being
announced, and I have had some good input from most
clubs, as well as a couple of supporters. The two most
contentious positions have been ruck and full-forward,
where there are many contenders. I would like to
encourage supporters, players, and coaches alike to
have a think over a few more contentious spots; Coach
of the year, skipper of TOTY, Full-back and Centre-Half
Back are all important positions that are difficult to pick.
Get those thinking caps on!
Kew and LaTrobe had two close battles during the year,
and the qualifying final offered more of the same. With
injured stars returning, the Bears looked strong and the
tighter confines of Garvey Oval also seemed to be in
their favour. In the first quarter the game was reasonably
tight, with Stephen Duke finding plenty of the football for
the Bears, and Leigh Coffey creating havoc across half
forward for the uni. With eight scoring shots to two
though, LaTrobe were looking ominous. In the second
LaTrobe simply dominated. With reigning best and
fairest Joseph Mclean at the top of his game, Brad Van
Ooi dominating out of the middle, and Stuart Patten
converting,
LaTrobe
shattered the Bears’
confidence with a seven
goal quarter and a fortynine point lead at half time.
In the third Kew regrouped
and attempted to reduce the deficit and Craig Horne was
giving them every chance down forward, however
LaTrobe held firm and increased their lead. The last
quarter followed the same pattern with Kew fighting
hard, however the uni boys were just too quick, and with
Patten finishing with seven and Terry Ludeman bobbing
up with three goals they also had too many options up
forward.
In the elimination final two sides with little finals
experience went head to head. The Snakes were slight
favourites after two narrow victories during the year,
however South were full of confidence, despite having to
travel across town. The first quarter from Richmond
Central set the tone for the match with strong tacking
and no space being allowed for South’s runners. In the
ruck Luke Jamieson and Scott Smith were having a
titanic battle with neither truly holding sway, but both
providing a target for their respective teams. Skipper
David Speakman however was leading from the front for
Richmond providing plenty of rebound from defence,
and Daniel Pike was again dominating clearances. By the
end of the first Richmond had a reasonable lead of 22
points, but more importantly held South scoreless. In
the second Dale Andrew and Nathan Nuske combined to
extend the Snakes’ lead and like in the qualifying final the
game was virtually over at half time. Skipper Grant Ryan
and small forward Nick Wood tried hard to lift the Tigers,
but with Andrew continuing to dominate and no let-up
from the Richmond tackling, there was no way back into
the game. Another six goals in the last put the icing on
the cake for the Centrals who now look to a big game

Second Semi-Final
Albert Park V LaTrobe Uni
With one win apiece from meeting this year, two very
different sides present a tipsters nightmare. The
Falcons, strength, height and experience, matched up
with LaTrobe Uni’s pace, youth, and enthusiasm. Both
sides have playing coaches with in Dean Sheldrick and
Nathan Dallas who are inspirational on the field and
charismatic leaders off. The prolific Albert Park goal
kickers in Allan, Maunder, King, and Murnane have
kicked a staggering 197 goals this year between them,
so rebounding backs, Bence and Mclean will have to be
at the top of their games. At the same time the Falcons
will have to find a way to combat the speed and
elusiveness of Van Ooi, Ganino, Coffey, and the hardtackling Conheady. St Bernards College will suit the
Latrobe runners, however power forwards traditionally
do well at the Snakepit. It is hard to go past LaTrobe after
their brilliant form on the weekend, so I think they will
advance to Grand Final with a hard-fought twelve point
win.

First Semi-Final
Kew v Richmond Central
The Snakes played arguably their best game for the year
last week, whilst the Bears would be very disappointed
in their performance. Dale Andrew kicked his biggest
haul for the year, and will be a handful for the Bears
backs. David Speakman, Daniel Pike, and Dean
Sutherland guarantee that there will be no easy
clearances for the Kew midfield, and Roo Liddie adds a
touch of what is now known as ‘Jurrah’ (i.e. Magic). Kew
meanwhile were possibly a little underdone with several
stars returning from injury, and whilst Stephen Duke
was typically prolific, some of the others appeared rusty
and will be better for the run. It is a rare day when
Carman, Bagnall, McDermott, Horne and Koschitzke are
unable to kick a winning score, and the Snake backline
led by Carpenter and Woodberry will have their work cut
out. It is again hard to pick a winner, but I think Kew can
reverse last week’s result and move into D3 and the
preliminary final by 5 points.

PRELIMINARY FINAL
by Joe Morsello
Jo e y’s Ja rg on
Three out of the starting eight left with UHS/Flem
bowing out in a disappointing display which hasn’t
reflected their successful season. For the big one the
bookies have now firmed Oakleigh into $1.22 with the
Bullants out to $3.10 who haven’t been able to peg
back the Oaks. The value runner is St Bernards at
$11. You would feel that Oakleigh deserve their
strong favouritism but with a big ground for Prelim
and Grand Final of which the two sides vying for the
last place would suit, finals can be a different kettle of
fish as we all know.

Oakleigh won their way through to the big dance with
a comfortable 41 point victory. Leading throughout
proceedings the Oaks were always going to have the
upper hand in the conditions. With a strong chance of
these two sides meeting again in a couple of weeks
time the conditions could be a lot different making a
fair difference. Scott, Hunt, and Corfe were up to their
old tricks through the midfield and the quick
Tsoucalas was devastating with 5 goals. Simcoe and
Dellaportas tried their hardest for the Bullants, but
will need some help against the Snow dogs this week.

The Snow Dogs won their way through to a shot at
the big dance with a strong last quarter ensuring a
big win against an overwhelmed UHS/Flem side. The
breezy conditions at Sports Cover as per usual were
used well by St Bernards with UHS / Flem failing to
make in roads when they had the chance. With the
ever reliable Habel and Bourke down back for UHS
the snow dogs still managed to break through despite
their strong efforts. For the victors, Wheeler and
Farrell were at their best.

I have plugged this strong
Bullants midfield enough this
year, but it will get the job
done on the wide open
spaces of Central Reserve. Although the big ground
will suit the Snowdogs with their dung heap being of
a similar dimension, I will be very surprised if the
Bullants get beaten here if the conditions are dry.
With a little bit of rain forecast though perhaps finals
football can get the snow dogs to lift a cog to the
class of the Bullants. Although the Bullants Under
39.5 looks inviting I’ll be sticking with the Bullants to
win comfortably and play in their first VAFA Grand
Final despite Mr Kavanagh’s protests.

And then there were three! Week one of the finals
series was a cracker with both games going down
to the wire and the underdogs in each getting up.
Plenty of punters left Trevor Barker Oval (which is
in magnificent knick mind you) scratching their
heads wandering if what they had just seen had
actually really happened.
In the early encounter it was Uni Blues who got
going early making all the play in a torrid opening
stanza. When the dust had settled the tempo of the
game flowed into an even arm wrestle between the
50 metre arcs as both teams struggled to hit targets
in the windy conditions. By half time Old Scotch
would have considered themselves lucky to only be
3 goals adrift of Blues as the Uni side missed plenty
of chances through the second quarter. Old Scotch
are a classy outfit and everyone expected a better
showing and it came after the main break. While
their field kicking was still not up to scratch The
Cards were winning enough of the stoppages to
claim first use of the pill through Ash Lim and
Byron Smith. Fraser McFarlane was proving a
handful for the Blues backmen with his searching
leads around the forward arc and one sensed the
flood gates about to open at the Red end however
with every OS score Uni Blues would find Jack
Townley or Albert Weddell open and able to
maintain a slight buffer over The Cardinals. What
was a calm Uni Blues bench throughout the game
became increasingly tense as Old Scotch got to
within 3 points of the lead. Time and again the
Scotch midfielders pumped the ball forward only to
be denied by another strong Hugh Vickers-Willis
mark or a clearing handball from Jared Edwards
and when Tyson Day marked 50 out directly in front
all watching felt it was good bye Old Scotch. The
resulting kick sailed wide and gave Old Scotch 2 or
3 minutes to get motoring and score from the kick
in however when Llewyn Butler swooped on the
loose ball a calmly slotted his first for the day The
Blues bench could once again breath with ease
winning this one by 10 points. Well done to both
teams for providing a stellar game and a special
mention needs to go to Joel Smith and Mark
Rogers who put in a magnificent performance
behind the whistles. I must also thank Old Scotch
V
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2009
coach Paul Dodd for his
willingness to chat about all
things U19 and VAFA for that
matter through the year.
With Uni Blues singing their
song in the rooms De La Salle
Blues and Old Xavarians took
the field. An air of expectancy
descended over Trevor Barker
Oval as both coaches boxes
worked furiously to cover their
mid-week plans and match ups
with last minute bench
changes occurring right up to
the first bounce. Who’s gone to
Buckley? Where’s Murphy? Men in fluoro green
polo shirts were clocking up some early miles and
sprinting everywhere. Finals had definitely arrived
and it was Old Xavs to settle first, Ulbrick gaining
the ruck ascendancy with Sanfillipo looking
dangerous at ground level. Careful attention was
being paid to Dan Noonan up forward for Xavs but
when the ball was kicked past his lead Richard
Johnson stood tall to mark in the goal square and
kick the opener of the game. From here the first half
was all Xavs and they took a healthy five and half
goal lead into the sheds. With De La’s guns
seemingly covered things looked grim for the Blues
but as all good teams do they hit back. Edward
Clinch and Adam Bonaddio fired up and with
Lachlan O’Connell regularly troubling the scorers
the Blue and Gold machine found some momentum
and at the 25 minute mark hit the front to lead by a
point. With only minutes to play one more roll of
the dice came from Xavs as they launched what
would be their final attack on goal. From a tight
pack Luke Bisset was able to slot through his first
for the day and send De La Salle to an appointment
with Uni Blues in the Prelim this week.
Preliminary Final week sees an elated winner and a
stunned loser meet in what is always a must see
contest no matter which comp you follow and this
weeks match between Uni Blues and De La Salle
(Blues) will be a cracker. Vickers-Willis will have his
hands full as he tries to contain Stephen Muller who
surprisingly went goal less last week while the De
La Defence will need to wary of Townley, Day and
Damien Ractliffe

Heading out to Marles for the clash between Fitzroy
and Old Carey, it was sure to be a game that went
down to the wire. With the promise of continuing
on towards finals glory, the game see sawed until
half time, with both teams giving their all in a
display of dedicated hard football. After the
oranges, Old Carey put the pedal to the metal and
went into the last with a 3 point advantage. Leaving
the punters with baited breath, both teams knuckled
down and really gave it there all in the last stanza.
With the momentum though, Old Carey dug deep
and were able to fend off the valiant attempts by
Fitzroy to steal victory. Impressive performances
from Woofindin, Simpons and De Leijer for Old
Carey, with Jumeau, Bisetto and Anderson playing
well for the Roys.

The showdown between the ladder leaders Old
Camberwell and Old Essendon was on paper pitted
as a cracker of a game. It was apparent early on
however, that a blow out was on the cards, with the
ladder leaders keen to exert their dominance on the
competition. Smashing on an impressive 6 goal
first quarter, Old Camberwell made it clear that they
meant business, and kept Old Essendon to just 4
goals at half time. Never really getting into the
game, Old Essendon went down by 61 points at the
final siren. It was an absolute day out for S.
Killworth and S. Bennett, who kicked 9 between
them for the victors, steering their team to the
Grand Final and the handy week off.

Tip: Old Essendon to leap out of the gate early to
redeem their big loss from last week. Old Carey will

Bolting out of the gate, Ivanhoe got straight to work,
kicking 9 through the big sticks before ¼ time,
leaving a shell shocked Old Westbourne team in their
wake. Emerging from the first break huddle, Old
Westbourne tried to regroup and managed to kick 5,
but it was to no avail given the increasing list of goal
kickers for the Hoes in the same quarter. By half
time, the lead was out to 39 points and not looking
good for the Warriors. After a good rest at half time
(or perhaps a spray from the coach) Old Westbourne
ran onto the ground with a definite spring in their
step. Playing hard, dependable footy, Old
Westbourne had all the momentum in the final half,
keeping Ivanhoe to just a 1 point score in the last
quarter. The late charge home was left all too late
though, with eventual winners Ivanhoe holding on by
15 points.

The top of the tables clash between Therry Penola
and Old Geelong had the makings of a great game.
With a spot in the Grand Final up for grabs,
supporters were hoping for a close, down to the wire
event. It was not to be. Although evenly matched in
the first quarter, Old Geelong appeared to be
chomping at the bit, and put on quite a show in the
second term, to break away from Therry. From there
it was onward and upwards, as Kent, Wood and
Skelton kicked bags for Old Geelong, to set up the
victory and the Grand Final appearance. Old Geelong
58 point winners. Best for Therry Penola were Ryan,
Milanovic, Walshe and Dimaio.

Woweee!!! What a start we have to this year’s finals
series as the underrated De La Salle Gold’s defeated
St Kevins to the tune of 48 points. The De La Salle
V

boys were simply unstoppable as they had a wide
range of goal kickers across the board and plenty of
team orientated gut running proved to be the
difference between the two sides.
For De La it was S. Lowe, D. Hutchinson & T.
Naughtin who set the standard throughout the day
winning the contested ball and showing poise under
pressure. For the losers it was K. Brick who was left
to do far too much.
Se cond Se mi F i na l :
Well this is a very concerning result in terms of a
level playing field in this seasons finals as the
Melburnians completely belted Old Brighton by a
solid 118 points in what was to be a very one sided
affair.
The forward fire power that the Burners had on
display in L. Bennett who kicked 6, A. Marangon
jagging 5 along with the silky delivery of P. Levy just
proved to be a class above on the day as the
Melburnians have sent a real message to any
remaining challenges that they are the real deal in
September this season.
The Burners now have the week off as they have
booked a spot in the big dance and now await there
final challenger. Who Will It Be?

This game will be a belta! De La in red hot form and
the Brighton lads will be out seeking some
redemption this week. It sounds cliché but both
teams want the same outcome therefore it really will
come down to who wants it more and at this point in

at the cup just a tad more then the boys from Old
Brighton. De La Salle by 4 goals.

Holy Smokes!! I had a little gut feeling that the
Mentonians had a few tricks up their sleeves but
didn't expect the belting that they handed the
disappointed Bentleigh lads over the weekend as the
Mentonians ran out victors by 13 goals. This ended
a Bentleigh season in which they had some very high
hopes of pushing deep in to September but just
wasn't meant to be.
For the Old Mentonians it was L. Hull booting 9 of the
best & J. Lumsden who jagged 5 that proved to be
the real x factor on the day along with the well
groomed skills of S. O''Halloran who had the pill on
a string.

Old Mentonians are the real smokey now this is
shaping up to have one hell of a finish come that final
day in September.

Hampton just reserved a table for the big date on the
13th of September as they defeated Ajax in a thriller
at Sportscover Arena by a close 15 points. Both
teams were hard at the football and willing to run but
it was Hampton’s ability to push both forward and
back that proved the real difference on the day.
For the Rovers it was E. Turner, B. Culvenor & R.
Johnston that did the damage to the Jackers with
their poise under pressure and spearing passes. For
Ajax D.Glass tried his very best booting 4 and giving
his side the best chance of winning.

Well Ajax have their backs to the wall this week after
losing such a close hard contest at the weekend it’s
going to be hard seeing them stopping a rampaging
Old Mentonians outfit that wiped Bentleigh off the
face of the earth.
The fire power for the Mentonians in L. Hull & J.
Lumsden may prove to be the difference in the end
as I believe the Mentonians will advance to the big
