June has arrived, and it looks like another busy month for
Oregon Region SCCA. The Rose Cup Races take place June
7th - June 9th, and features Regional, National, and Vintage
races. The Rose Cups is one of the largest club races in the
entire U.S., and is the largest club racing event on the West
Coast. Quickly on the heels of Rose Cups is the G.I. Joes
200 IndyCar race weekend, featuring the Rose Festival
Sports Car Invitational, which is a restricted Regional to
showcase Club Racing to the IndyCar racing fans.
An extrication school will take place at 7:00 am on
Saturday, June 8th of Rose Cups at the ‘pumpkin patch’ next
to Medical. The course will cover the basics of removing an
injured driver from a race car while preventing further
injury, and will discuss the initial basic care of an injured
driver. The class is open to anyone interested in attending.
Sunday, June 23nd will feature a Solo 2 event in the club
paddock area at Portland International Raceway and a
RallyCross event will be taking place at the Washington
County Fairgrounds.
July will then start out with a BANG!! Hot on the heels of
the Fourth of July comes a Double Regional Race weekend,
July 5th-7th, and Solo 2 will have their 6th points event of 2002.

BY HOLLY REMINGTON, REGIONAL EXECUTIVE
[email protected]
Oregon Region SCCA is 40 years old this year. 4 decades
ago in 1962, visionaries much wiser than us, gained a
Regional Charter from the SCCA, Inc. We still hold this
charter today, and its through all of us that our wonderful
club thrives to this day. Congratulations to each of us for
continuing to support our family. Thank you to those of you
that still walk this earth, who started this club so long ago!
Greg Bell and I spent some unsupervisored time together at
the last race weekend. We developed an idea for a participant's
breakfast on Sunday of RoseCup. Workers, drivers and crew
are invited to join us for our 40th Anniversary breakfast beginning at 7:00 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. We hope you'll join us before you
head to the car, pre-grid our out to your corner.
Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the May
Regional/National. We had outstanding attendance. This
weekend could be our most successful for the season. This was
also the weekend that we tested our joint agreement with
Cascade Sports Car Club, OMRRA and PIR for the south paddock restructuring. Paddock space was at a premium and
Bryan Hyde and his paddock crew had it all handled! The late
night drags joined us for Friday and Saturday nights. By
most all accounts this worked very well. I know that change
is always met with some hesitation. But, I was most
impressed at the way our club stepped up to welcome these
new people. This is a work in progress, with the goal that
WestSide Bar and Grill
Road Racing may continue to operate out of the south paddock, and SoloII will continue to be in the Pro-pits. Never
lose sight that I am motivated by these two items. I do have
to strike a delicate balance in continuing to work with other
Users and PIR management, and sometimes compromise is
required for the good of the whole club.
I was thrilled to see all the young people out there interested in
motorsports. Their presence brings opportunities that we could
never see before. Perhaps these kids are the future Win Casey's of
our sport. Those young Wins who "felt the need for speed" at a
young age, and have flirted with that destiny for the rest of their life.
We have the ability to welcome the kids into this sport we all hold
so dear. They deserve to know what safe, fun racing is all about,
and perhaps we can all play a part in showing them.
I thought I'd share a little bit with you about the business side
of the club. We received our Regional Charter from the
National office this month. The renewal is an annual request
required to be received by National by March 1, 2002. We are
required to provide proof of our tax filing status, State business
status, and pledge to ascribe to the bylaws of SCCA, Inc. Our
taxes were filed timely on May 15, 2002. Our membership has
grown to 1710 members. We have renewed a 2 year contract
with Portland Rose Festival to support the RoseCup and CART
races. We have a firm Operating Budget for 2002, one so
detailed we will have very valuable information on our Actuals
vs Budget items to assist with a long-range financial budget.
The Board of Directors and officials are very hard at work.

OBJECTS IN THE MIRROR
May Be Closer Than They appear
BY: DAVE ISSELHARD, ROAD RACING DIRECTOR
E-MAIL:
[email protected]
The May National/Regional came off well, thanks to
Race Ops and all the Specialties. After March and April,
apparently our prayers to the Non-Rain God paid off. I not
only got a suntan; I nearly had a heatstroke.
We had what appears to be a record number of entries,
300 plus for the May Event and we will try to repeat it next
year, but try to get a three-day weekend in May to put it
on. My apologies to those Race Workers for the incidents
that caused us to "lose" the Race Worker break in the
afternoons. Having the first National in NORPAC is great
for the Oregon Region, but as we now know, we really
need three days to put it on without exhausting everyone.
Next up, Rose Cups!! As I write this, our Administrator,
Karen is literally swamped at the office. My thanks go out
to her. Without her efficient work, this could not be the
success that I know it will be.
On the subject of the Rose Cups I want to address the drivers on the issue of paddock space, and specifically
reserved paddock space. First, as usual, paddock space in
not unlimited. This year we have initiated reserved paddock space and those reservations are to be honored.
Bryan Hyde and the Pit and Paddock Crew have done an
outstanding job. However, Bryan and the Pit and Paddock
Crew need to know when a Competitor or a Team DOES
NOT INTEND TO ENTER AN EVENT AND UTILIZE
THE PADDOCK SPACE USUALLY RESERVED FOR
THAT COMPETITOR OR THAT TEAM. In that manner, the space then becomes available to others. While this
is particularly important during Rose Cups, it is just as
important on every race weekend. Your cooperation on
this issue will enable us to continue the "Reserved
Paddock" Program.
Looking in the Mirror, my special thanks to Shawn Kolbe
for his past efforts on the Worker Meals Program. His
departure from this program leaves a huge gap in our ability to serve our Race Workers. Alice Fitzpatrick did a
great job over the May Event, but we really need others to
assist. I am proposing to the BOD that we establish a new
Specialty within Race Ops, with a Chief for that Specialty.
I call the Specialty "Race Worker Services". I would like
that Specialty to be dedicated to not only the issue of food
and drink, but all the aspects of assisting the Race Workers
and in addition, the authority to receive recommendations
for and dispense "Awards" for outstanding performance
by Race Workers, individually or collectively, without
BOD approval on the specific Awards.
Page 10
June 2002
The "Awards" could be monetary and, within guidelines
established by the BOD, include such things as financial
reimbursement for travel cost, motel rooms, meals etc.
while "on the road" working events at other NORPAC race
weekends, or if the BOD so directs, the Nationals. I have
already proposed this to our RE and would like input from
Race Ops and all the Chiefs on the establishment of such a
Specialty and the parameters that would best serve the
Race Workers. The Chief of this Specialty should have not
only the responsibility, but the authority to dispense
Awards, and should have a Workers Services Crew and
have available the equipment to assist in providing the services required by all Race Workers. Our Race Workers
deserve no less.
I’ll see you at the Rose Cups.
Remember, "OBJECTS IN THE MIRROR, May be

BY JOHN MARTINSEN, DIRECTOR AREA 13
SCCA NATIONAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The SCCA Board of Directors meets at least every month.
Four times a year these are face-to face meetings and the
rest are telecons. We have just completed our second 2002
face-to-face meeting held at a hotel in Denver near the
SCCA Headquarters. Here are some of the items we discussed or discovered at that meeting.
The Annual Waiver (annual pass) Program is ready for
deployment nation wide. Each Region can decide whether
this program is something they wish to implement. It is for
Club Racing only and members must be licensed for one
year before entering the program. It applies to drivers,
crew, marshals, or any other officials and the minimum age
is 18 years old. Regions wanting to implement the program
need to register their program with the National Office.
The interest in after market add-ons for small cars is really high. One of the common names for these cars when
they are tricked out is "rice rockets". This interest in these
cars has influenced other businesses, like publishing. Euro
Tuner Magazine is one publication that deals almost exclusively in these cars. This magazine is including a 24-page
pullout talking about SCCA. World Challenge, Solo and
Rally, and Club Racing all have these cars competing. A
large overrun of these pullouts will be printed and used as
handouts at some SCCA Speed World Challenge races. I
saw a mock up of the insert. A really nice piece. Look for
Euro Tuner where you buy magazines and have a look.
Some local car clubs are finding it impossible or too
expensive to obtain insurance for their solo events. This
presents an opportunity to bring members of these clubs
and their activities into the SCCA. Take a look around your
area and see if there is a club looking for a home.
Good things are happening at the SCCA University. The
SCCA University is the term given to the training program
being instituted by Steve Johnson and the National Staff.
The new Headquarters Building in Topeka will contain
classrooms and training aids for the SCCA U. But the
SCCA University also travels, to places like Divisional
Conventions. We can probably have the SCCA U at our
NORPAC Convention next January if we want to. We
need to coordinate with the National Office about courses
available at that time.
There is a lot of discussion regarding the so-called ‘coscheduled’ races. Co-scheduled is the term used to
describe events when SCCA has one or more race on a
weekend largely conducted by another sanctioning body.
Some tracks are offering a spot in the schedule for these
SCCA races in order to get insurance for the workers that
comes with an SCCA sanction. Therein lies the problem:
Are we providing insurance to the promoters without sufficient premiums to cover the risk? The cost of participant
accident insurance collected on the basis of number of
entries in the SCCA race will cover the risk generated by
that race. But maybe not the risk and exposure of the
other sanctioning bodies’ races.
The first task that was assigned to me when I started my
term on the Board of Directors this year was to put together
an ad soliciting bids for the position of Loud Pedal Editor. I
approached the task with a great deal of enthusiasm, expecting that it would be a relatively simple matter. I have learned
a lot since then. The process has been far more difficult, and
challenging than I ever could have imagined.
I had hoped that I would be able to report this month that
the Editorship was finalized, and we could move on to other
things. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Due to some
unexpected circumstances, the bidding process was flawed.
After considering various options, the Board decided to reopen bids for the Loud Pedal and start over. We are once
again accepting bids for the editorship of the Loud Pedal. If
you are interested in bidding, please check the Region's website (http://www.oregonscca.com) for the specifications.
The last date for submitting bids will be June 15, 2002.
I want to extend a very special thank you to Oregon
Region members Bob Brands and Eric Dolsen. They have
both been very helpful, and generous with their time, as we
have worked through this process.
DRIVER’S TIP #1
HOW TO AVOID STANDING IN
LONG LINES AT REGISTRATION
If you would rather be racing or tinkering with the
car than standing in a registration line, here's how
you can help.
1. Fill out your entry form completely and accurately. That would include all classes and races you
wish to enter, all your personal information, including competition license level or type, and including
correct fees.
2. Send your entry in early. The deadline is actually the deadline and not the starting point.
3. Update your membership & license before the
event. If you have questions on how-to or when, try
to get those answered before you get to registration.
4. If you want to add crew members to your list, it
would be most helpful if you have those written
down & just present the list at registration so we can
attach it to your entry. The registrar then would not
have to write the names as you dictate them while
you and others behind you are standing in line.
5. Take a look at your registration packet to see if
your car number & class are correct.
If you do Numbers 1 - 5, Registration WILL greet
you with a smile & process you as quickly as possible. You'll be outta there! in no time.
See you at Rose Cup!

THE DUCK STOPS HERE
By Howard “duck” Allen, Competition Manager
WOW! Three Hundred twenty entries; that just might be a
non-RoseCup record for the region. It seemed like almost
every specialty was thin on workers, due to one thing or
another. By the time the last racer had a victory lap @ 6:30
something Sunday night everyone was spent.
But, as
Letterman would say it was a "good kind of tired."
The first of many tips of the helmet this month goes out to
Pat Derouin for flagging down the ice-cream truck and providing snow cones for the pre-grid, hot pit, turn twelve crew
and anyone else he could reach while the track was hot. Pat I
know you saved my life and probably many others with your
act of charity.
Being a black flag judge, I was privileged to hang with the
pre-grid crew. Marie Kirby and the crew gets a special and
HUGE tip-of-the-helmet. They weathered the storms from
within, and were there for our racers (as always). First-off,
condolences go out to Chuck Zanardi and the pre-grid crew
on the loss of Lucy. I did not realize until I gridded just how
much I missed the bonnet and her quiet kind manner. R.I.P.,
Lucy. In addition to the loss of Lucy, the pre-grid crew was
coping with other difficulties. Leslie Churchill came out to
work just days after under-going surgery. Margie is still getting over the recent loss of Hoppy. It is dedication like this
that sets this region apart.
A forgotten tip of the helmet from last month to Jeff Z (who
did a GREAT job as chief Steward in May) for providing his
car to Shane Fanning for both schools to make the dream come
true for another worker now racer. Correcting another oversight from last month. I stopped-by turn twelve to get notes
from Captain Ken Killam about another track "improvement
(?)" and he reminded me I forgot to include Larry Paulson in
the corner worker crew in the sky. Thanks, Ken. It has indeed
been all too long since we have heard the bagpipes.
Now back to racing. John Black is back, and NORPAC has
him. IMHO the National SRF race was maybe the race of the
weekend. The man who has medaled the last four years at
Mid-Ohio and was Pro series runner-up two years ago, came
back to give hometown legend Chris "Action" Jackson a race.
Not only was this a first rate warm-up for Rose Cup, it should
insure that it will be SRO in the festival corners stands when
the flag drops for the SRF race in June. But please, this time
let's NOT make the Festival a Bermuda triangle, where race
cars go in and do not come out.
This past weekend the paddock was almost a museum for the
car nut. One could not walk by the Brewer Brothers pit,
Monte's pit , Team Dan Miller, Demski/ Stevens and many,
many more, and not be in AWE. Monte's new toy, Dan Miller's
Rocketsports Jag, Mike Rockett's Camaro and Jack Wigmore's

UNKNOWN SPEC RACER
Portland May 12th and 13th 2002. This weekend was just
one big adrenaline rush!!! I hope everyone had even half as
much fun as I did. Twenty-six cars started both the regional and the National. My goal for the weekend was to hang
with the front bunch, get some good video and aim for a top
five finish. I figured the field was going to be very fast.
Qualifying went better than I was expecting as I ended up
on the pole for both the regional and the national. Larry
Vollum was beside me on the front row with John Black
behind me in third and Dane Pitarresi fourth.
The starts have been just a bit different since the
Thunderhill race and I wonder if the starters haven’t decided to be a little stricter with their enforcement of the "slow
and steady" rule. On the first attempt, I slowly took the
field into third gear at about 3500 rpm and held steady. We
all just chugged slowly down the straight with the starter
shaking his head. He may have seen something in back he
didn’t like, but the front row was squeaky clean.
The second run I went down to 4000 rpm in second gear
and the starter gave a late flag. I held braking as late as I
dared and prayed that no one was going to be insane enough
to stuff it up the inside. John Black was right behind me
and showed his experience by getting through the chicane
clean. I’m not sure if I may have contributed to Larry

Honeybucket Camaro. If that V-8 muscle doesn't make Rose
Cup dreams dance in your head, check your vital signs. For
a Motorhead, it just doesn't get much better than that. And, if
you prefer to play "the way we were", then there's the vintage
field that looks like a portrait of Old World masters.
Props go out to the E-crew and Flat-tows this weekend for
the excellent broom work! Did someone OK the Exxon
Valdez to go out on course?
Props also go out to Karl Van Austen (blue #77 911) who
may have well ended his race season in April with a wreck
in the festival. Karl came out to work the corners last weekend. In his own words it was an enlightening experience.
THANKS Karl. Also, spotted in the paddock, Virginia
Loehner who must have enjoyed her boys going at it
Loehner-style during the national. I could not catch-up with
her to thank her for making the West side Bar and Grill the
racers place to be on the west side.
Now for the humble apology from your scribe. For the
first time ever, I did NOT know which corner the adorable
Mindy was in. So just who was that newbie in nine who had
my wife's "doo" on? Sorry about blowing you all those kisses, they should have gone to turn eight! <G>
So young Billy Murray has a regional? Could this be the
first father/Son Rose Cup for them?
Next stop…..the crown jewel of West Coast club racing
the Rose Cups, stay tuned!
Duck-Out
Vollum hitting my left rear tire, there is a natural tendency
to "open up" the corner entry a little, and I may have faded
left into his path. If I did, I didn’t mean to and it didn’t show
in the video; what did show was Larry’s nose hitting the left
rear wheel and the front of his car, or perhaps just the nose,
which seemed to jump about 6 inches up in the air. I skidded sideways and, with full left lock, just kept from spinning and just stayed out of the sand pit.
Miraculously I led out of the chicane and did a few pretty good laps while Larry Vollum, John Black and Dane
Pitarresi got into a scrap. At the last regional, Larry and I
did a terrific series of fast laps, 14 or more in the low
1:29’s, unfortunately neither of us was able to match that
pace in this race, if I had been able duplicate that performance I’d have just checked out. But that was not to be.
The lap times were all in the 1:30’s and John Black had got
by Larry. Worse still John had started to open the gap.
Well it was a long race and about twenty-five minutes
into it John had caught me and passed as we braked for the
chicane. I re-passed on the back straight into turn ten. It was
clear that John was faster into the chicane than me and I
was faster exiting turn seven onto the back straight. A couple of laps later John repeated the pass into the chicane and
I promptly got him back between seven and ten for the second time. The starter gave us the finger and I braked late as
I darted into the chicane, but I left the door open for John.
I was in perfect position to nail him on the exit of the chicane but the tail end stepped out as I was just a fraction too
aggressive going to power. One chance lost, BUT I still had
my ace in the hole.
I was in perfect position for the run onto the back straight.
If he guarded left I would just go right and may the gods
have mercy on us. I can take turn ten mighty fast when I
have to! BUT again I was just a tiny fraction too aggressive
and ran wide up onto the exit berm with two wheels in the
dirt and that was all she wrote. Second place, and I blew my
chance to beat a top National and Pro racer, a guy who has
won three spec racer Ford Pro races. Well done, John, you
didn’t win the Pro races by accident.
One great thing about renting a racecar is that you get to
meet some very interesting people. My renter this weekend
was Beau Borders. He has been around racing most of his
life and loves the Spec Racer Ford. He seemed to go one
second quicker with every track session. Hopefully that
trend won’t continue, otherwise we’ll all be in trouble. His
girlfriend Joey made me feel like I was hanging out with
the jet set at Monte Carlo, very hard to concentrate on racing. Beau works in the movie industry for Lucas films
adding creative sounds to go with those visual special
effects. Yeah, he hangs out with George. We’re looking
forward to some more great weekends racing together.

SOLO 2 REPORT
BY: CHUCK JARVIE, SOLO 2 DIRECTOR
E-MAIL: [email protected]
Ever wonder how much effort it takes to run a Solo2 event? I
did a quick count of the obvious jobs, the number of people
needed for each one and came up with seventy-five bodies
required. This means, in rough terms, we need a daily entry of
seventy-five drivers just to run our events and does not include
the work that needs to be done to plan each one, to set up the
night before and tear down, pack and move the trailer. I know
there are clubs which are lucky to get forty or fifty cars to turn
out, so is it any wonder that these clubs have difficulties running
safe, quality events? There is no question that we have been
spoiled by our success but we should not loose sight of the effort
necessary to get us where we are today and to keep up with new
challenges. Speaking of challenges: I believe we owe our RE,
Holly Remington, a very big thank you for negotiating a compromise operating scenario with PIR to share the south paddock
area with late night drag races. For the Solo2 group it meant that
we were able to set up our course on Friday afternoon, during
the BMW track day (thanks also to the BMW club), and not tear
down until Sunday afternoon. Another thanks to our Road Race
buddies who brought their excess worker lunches over to Solo2.
They didn’t last long with our hungry crew.
I just got back from the Atwater, CA Divisional and National
Tour where the weather was cool in the morning but eighty-five
in the afternoon (when I ran). For those who don’t know,
Atwater is about eight miles north of Merced on US99. By
another measure it’s 734 miles or 14 hours towing! Can you
believe we do this for less than six minutes of actual on track
Page 14
June 2002
time? It is held at the old Castle AFB which has a great outdoor
air museum, complete with SR71 Blackbird, B52H, B24, B17,
F104, F101, F86, F84, etc. The Saturday night dinner was a barbeque held on the air museum grounds which everyone enjoyed.
The event was well attended with 278 entries and 15 of those
from Oregon Region. Even better is that Oregon drivers took
home ten trophies. In the Super Stock class (more like a
Chevrolet Z06 class) Tom Kotzian took third. Also taking third
was Jim Daniels MR2 in E Stock. Bonnie Mueller took first in
F Stock Ladies with the family Mustang Cobra. One of the more
hotly contested classes is G Stock with Oregon region drivers
Mark Darby and Chris Hartman taking second and fifth respectively. Mark was only 0.025 seconds out of first place after two
days of competition. Heather Howe took first in G Stock Ladies
and Lorin Mueller took first in H Stock. Also in H Stock and
taking second place was Scott Mullins who used to run with us
in Oregon but now hails from Las Vegas. H Stock is also interesting because the Honda Insight electric/gas hybrid car runs
here and was as high as second place before the last runs on
Sunday. Is this the future for Solo2? In Street Touring S (meaning non-sticky street tires) Curtis Eames took third place out of
thirteen entries. Even better is that Pam Eames took first place
in Street Touring S Ladies by only 0.002 seconds! Overall it was
a great event and well worth going (despite the long tow) if for
no other reason than the warm weather and (did I not mention
this earlier?) 15 acres (yes, acres!) of flat concrete to run on.
Some clubs have all the luck. Till next time.

The Oregon Trail ProRally results are official! We had
one of our most successful years in 2002, and we need to
send out a ‘thank you’ to all the teams for coming out to the
Great Northwest to visit us here in Oregon Region.
A big ‘Thank you’ also needs to be sent out to everyone,
from those on the Region Board on down, who came out
and volunteered at this year’s event. We had an overwhelming response to our call for volunteers. There were
literally hundreds of people who came out of the woodwork
to volunteer their time on the weekend of April 19th and
20th. This kind of response gives us the incentive to do
even bigger things for next year. Without those of you who
came out, even for part of the weekend, we at the Oregon
Rally Group would like to thank you!

A few people need mention by name. First off is the Rally

picked up the details that others missed. Other people
whom need thanking include Gloria Hale, our Volunteer

Kevin Needham, who coordinated all of the sweep vehicles; and Scott Adams, our E-Crew Coordinator. These
four had to work closely to ensure that all of the positions

facilities, from the WestCoast Hillsboro as our host hotel to
the Tuality Health Education Center as our finish; and he
also doubled as our Registrar and Treasurer. Chris Portal
was our Chief of Controls. He made sure everything ran
smoothly on the day of the event. John Teeter handled our
contacts with the Oregon Department of Forestry to get us
back into the woods this year.
And last, but certainly not least is Mike Nagle. Mike was

which roads we are going to run. This year’s task was no

BOARD MEETING MINUTES
OREGON REGION SCCA
BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES
APPROVED
Greg reminded the BOD that last year we agreed to purchase twenty-five
at a time.
TREASURER’S REPORT – Absent
DATE: 4/4/2002
PLACE: China Bay Restaurant, Beaverton, OR 97005
Holly advised that all bills are paid and that the budget will be finalized
by the next BOD Mtg.
PRESENT Board Members: Holly Remington, Greg Bell, Chuck Jarvie, Jeff
Zurschmeide, Matt Tabor, Cheryl Allen, Ben Hockman
LOUD PEDAL - Deadline is the 15th
Members: Mary Thompson, Doug Berger, Bob Smethers, Karen McCoy,
Bud Mansur, Chris Hale, Cathy Frasier, Gary Frasier, Robert Dratwa
Guests: Monika Pettersson-Tabor
Excused: Gary Manchester, Dave Isselhard
CALL TO ORDER – The meeting was called to order by Holly at 6:35.
MINUTES APPROVAL – The minutes were corrected and approved
M/S (Matt/Jeff) M/P
MEMBER COMMENTS – Bob Dratwa expressed concern over the
fact that we ran short on lunches on Sunday of the last event. Bud said
that this was an oversight and would be corrected in the future.
Greg asked Doug to list the CART Restricted Regional in the LP. He
also inquired about some reciprocal advertising. TC might be interested
in advertising their ThunderHill event in the LP and they in turn would
do the Rose Cup Event in the Tell Tale. He will pursue and work out
with Doug.
RACE OPS – Matt and Bob requested approval to go forward with the
purchase of the winner stickers and needed radios and batteries even though
the budget was not approved as of yet. Approval was given for these items.
Bob has some bills that need to be paid before Gary returns. Holly suggested that Karen pay all except for one that will be forwarded to The
Rose Festival Assn.
Approval was also given to replace one of the easy-ups that was lost to
the wind at the March event.
Bob presented a "Race Re-Cap" of budget vs actuals. Discussion followed
with Jeff saying that this is a great tool and thanked Bob for his efforts.
NEW BUSINESS – None
COMMITTEE & DIRECTOR REPORTS -
Bud advised that we would be using a truck offered by Jon Brobst for the
remainder of the year as a track vehicle. (see RE notes pertaining to insurance)
REGIONAL OFFICE – Karen reported as follows:
OFFICE STAFF & HOURS
• Hours billed in March were 155, compared to a forecast of 130.
• Also took advantage of over 30 hours volunteer time from region members.
• Anticipate approximately 175 hours in April, plus more volunteer hours.
DIRECTORS REPORTS:
OFFICE EQUIPMENT
• Gary Manchester donated a used copier for use in the office or at the
track. It makes good quality copies & is faster than the one we have.
• Bob Smethers & Bud Mansur are working on the failed copiers.
RALLY – Chris Hale reported that they have received seventy five
entries (seventy one paid) for the Oregon Trail Rally. They had planned
on sixty three so needless to say they are thrilled.
TRANSPONDERS
• The current office inventory of transponders is: 1 hardwire, 0
rechargeable. We have on order 5 hardwire & 5 rechargeable. Should
arrive next week before our race weekend. Have already sold 1 rechargeable from the batch on order.
MARCH SCHOOL & RACE
• Total entries were 122, including school entries.
APRIL SCHOOL & RACE
• Entries are at 154 & the fax machine is still running!
ROSE CUP/CART INVITATIONAL
• Sanction requests were approved.
• Supps & entry forms were mailed by PRFA.
• Receiving entries for Rose Cup & CART races already.
• It appears the Canadian mailers were not put into envelopes, so we will
resend those as they are returned.
MEMBERSHIP
• Total membership as of March 4 = 1655.
• We had 100 new members join us in March (whew!)
CREDIT CARD PROCESSING
• Have had conversation with Steve Hershberger & he is finding the correct phone numbers of the sales people we need to talk with for our
refund of $199.
Karen asked for guidance as to the purchase and sale of additional
transponders.
Holly feels that we should continue on as a supplier of the transponders
to our drivers and other clubs as well.
Jeff suggested that the time has come to raise the cost to accommodate the use
of region funds. There was much agreement on this, also considering that the
turn a round time from us is better than if they had to order individually from
the supplier. Purchasers from now on will buy at the new price of
$290.00 and $320.00, one being hard wired and the other portable.
Page 30
June 2002
SOLO II – Chuck reported that all of their replacement equipment that
was stolen last year has been replaced and they are ready for the next event.
Those BOD members planning on attending the banquet for this event on
Sunday, April 21st at 3:00 should contact Mary with their reservation.
Mary will get the numbers to Matt the week before the event.
DIRECTOR 1 – (see executive session)
Cheryl was pleased to report that the BOD voted unanimously to accept
the bid from Doug Berger to continue on as The LP Editor. Holly
Authorized Cheryl to work out the details of an agreement with Doug.
DIRECTOR II – Jeff, speaking as Web Master advised that we are
changing to a new ISP. It is, wwwPair.com. We will split the costs
involved with TC. While we are sharing the costs we will each have our
own pointer for the sites.
Jeff hopes to look into the competition for region web sites this year and
perhaps participate.
Work on the banquet continues and he should have more concrete information
by next month. Once again this year our chosen date conflicts with that of Solo.
We have a new PR person, Randy Unsbee. Randy has much experience
in the PR field and is a driver as well. He will be responsible for providing information to the press on our races and provide results for publication etc. Welcome Randy!
ROAD RACING DIRECTOR – Absent
Jeff says THANK YOU to Jay Culbertson for providing an enclosed tent
for the fuel testing that was needed by Tech.
ASST RE – Ben advised that the E Chief from NW Region has contacted him
to see if they could secure six workers and an E truck for their double national
on the Memorial weekend. Ben said that he himself was not interested but gave
them a quote and will work to see if there is interest among the workers.
Ben requested stickers with the new web site address for our vehicles.
Holly will coordinate securing some.
PAST RE – Greg announced that 1800 mailers have been sent out (at
PFRA expense) for the Rose Cup restricted regional. PRFA will also
provide the checkered flags etc for this event.
L OUD P EDAL
BOARD MEETING MINUTES
RE COMMENTS - Holly verified that the truck that Jon Brobst has
offered will be a rental and as such will be covered by our insurance that
also covers, 2 pick ups and the panel van as well as the Solo II trailer and
the Reg trailer. She also advised that better coverage is being pursued.
Holly reminded all about the Spring Social to be held this coming Friday.
Porsche Club has asked for permission to use our scales at Rose Cup this
year. Holly gave approval.
She attended a Rose Festival planning meeting yesterday and advised
that the "Festival Trophy" race will be race group G this year.
NW region has inquired about the rental of transponders. Holly will take
care of a contract to cover this.
Mark from PIR has contacted Holly in regards to the possibility of operating our races out of the pro pits. This will be considered and we will
respond at a later date.
M/S (Greg/Matt) to adjourn. 8:45 M/P
Respectfully submitted,
Mary Thompson
Road Racing Meeting: None
L ETTER
TO THE
E DITOR
To all Oregon Region Members
Hi Everyone! My name is Patti Furrow. You may have seen
me around the track... I usually have a camera hanging
around my neck, photographing club events at P. I. R. As
a fellow SCCA member, I am writing in hopes that you will
all JOIN ME in supporting the efforts by the American
Diabetes Association in the fight against Diabetes. A devastating disease causing vision loss, dental problems, infections, loss of limbs, heart attacks and stroke and possibly
death.
An alarming 16+ Million Americans now have this disease.
Another 16+ boarding on it, and considers "PRE-Diabetic." I
personally know several friends and extended family members who struggle with this. Some have it under control.
For others, it is controlling them. A 24 year old friend lost
both of his legs to it due to late diagnosis. No doubt, you likely know someone who has it. Family, friends, fellowRacers... It might even be you.
I got to thinking...What could I do to make a difference???
Then I started doing some math. If 100 people give $47
each...or If 47 people generously gift $100 each.... You get
the picture...it all matters. The answer is simple...One caring
person at a time. I have started with myself. My commitment: To donate the first $100, I have joined Team Diabetes
and will fundraise an additional $4700 by August 15th, and
to personally run 26.2 miles in the Dublin marathon all in
support to Diabetes intervention & awareness.
Here's how you can help! Please send your tax deductible
contributions addressed to The American Diabetes
Association and mailed to:
Patti Furrow-Team Diabetes
PO Box 2066 • Clackamas, Oregon 97015-2066
* I can also accept credit cards on behalf of the ADA. Call me
for details @ (503) 558-0518 or (503) 805-4048.
You generous support is deeply appreciated-Thank you!! I will
also be donating 100% of the profits for photographs sold this
season to this very worthy cause.
THANK YOU LETTER TO OREGON REGION SCCA
On April 13, 2002, I had the privilege of escorting 3 Rotary
exchange students and a friend of mine around PIR. They were,
SIGRUN MARSTEN from the Faroe Islands, CESAR
ZAVALETA from Peru, and AUGUSTO JOSE CASTILLO
HERRERA from Guatemala. My friends name is KEVIN
MOSELEY from Vancouver, USA, more about him later.
This was only the second time for SIGRUN to actually visit a
racetrack. She got to visit the Molson Indy track in Canada last
August, but did not get to stay for the race. They do not have
racetracks in the Faroe Islands, but most of her family is avid
race fans. All 3, SIGRUN, CESAR and AUGUSTO are race
fans nonetheless.
Thank you BEN HOCKMAN for making SIGRUN put out
the fire during fire school and the Winners Flags. These kids
definitely are winners. Thank you to all of "E" Crew for making the kids feel so welcome. Thank you SKIP YOCOM for
the time we spent in the tower. (I was impressed by the way you
remembered each persons name and where they were from
when you would introduce them to others in the tower). They
really enjoyed wearing the headsets and listening to what was
going on around the track. Thank you to the Rose cup Room
Staff and for the Oregon Region gifts you gave me for the kids.
Thank you to Timing and Scoring for sharing what you do, with
the kids. Thank you BERNICE STANLEY for bringing the
kids pizza. (How did you know they liked that stuff)?
Thank you DAVE ISSELHARD, RUSS NEWHOUSE and
JEFF NIESS for the time we spent at your pit and all the race info
you passed on to the kids. You get DAVE started talking…. well,
you know. They really enjoyed getting in JEFF’S Spec Racer
and getting pictures while strapped in with helmet on. Thank you
SHAWN KOLBE for the goody bags of racing memorabilia.
Where these kids come from, these are definitely one of kind gifts.
You gave them things that even I don’t have. Thank you
HOWARD "DUCK" ALLEN for making possible a dream
come true for these kids. Thank you to JON BROBST, THE
VIPER GUY for providing the means for making that dream
come true. Truly, a ride they will never, ever forget. (There are
no Vipers on the Faroe Islands, in fact, I don’t think they have any
kind of snakes there)
I know that I probably left some one out of this THANK YOU,
but not intentionally. I would have liked to visit the corners and
all the other specialties with the kids, but certain rules and time
wouldn’t allow it.
A little side note out of all of this: My Rotary friend, KEVIN
MOSELEY, who is interested in racing (circle track) brought 2
of the students out to the track that morning. He didn’t know what
SCCA was when he arrived, but, after what he saw, he was a paid
in full member of SCCA by 10:00 am that morning. All you fine
folks did a good job setting the "hook". I think he is interested in
Drivers School and a Spec Racer now.
THANK YOU to all of OREGON REGION SCCA for
making this a memory that these kids will never forget. As
HOWARD would say, "A TIP OF THE HELMET TO
EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU".
JIM COLLINS, "E" Crew
