Quality down to the most minute detail
Back to Nature are the inventors of the aquarium background. That is why
we take the liberty of calling ourselves “Back to Nature − The Original”.
Back to Nature is the world‘s leading manufacturer of aquarium backgrounds. They are all designed and manufactured in our factory in Sweden.
All Back to Nature backgrounds are made by hand and based originals taken from nature – an extremely complex process, whose secret
we have kept to ourselves for years. The result is extremely naturalistic
backgrounds with varying colours – no two products are exactly alike.
In doing so we have continued an existing trend. Back to Nature backgrounds are not only impressive in their appearance. Our products also
encourage the creation of unique, individual aquarium designs. All products can be easily cut and altered – and backgrounds or modules combined with each other. This allows you to shape a landscape exactly according to your individual preferences and requirements.
Are Back to Nature backgrounds only suitable for aquariums? Our backgrounds are not harmful to any
plants or animals whatsoever – and are just as suitable for fountains, terrariums and vivariums etc.
Release your creativity!
Aquarium-compatible materials
The materials in Back to Nature backgrounds consist among other things
of a polyurethane mixture that has been tested for many years. The backgrounds do not give off any chemical substances that could be any way harmful to fish, plants or other living organisms, neither do they influence the
chemical composition of the water. Back to Nature backgrounds can therefore be used in all types of aquarium, both freshwater and saltwater.
Hardened, durable surface
Due to our special manufacturing process, the surfaces of Back to Nature backgrounds are extremely robust. You need to have no qualms about
using quite vigorous cleaning methods, and the risk of damage to the background from algae-eating catfish is minimal. Beneath the hardened surface the material is more porous in order to preserve the shape well.
Unique colouring
Back to Nature backgrounds are coloured by a unique process by which the
colour can never flake off. The colour is fused with the background material in a chemical reaction, which is why the surface layer remains intact, even
after years of use and cleaning. And even better – the colours retain their
brilliance. The hardened surface and unique colouring process mean that
the backgrounds tolerate standard dosages of common aquarium fish medications (e.g. those containing methylene blue and/or malachite green).
Ageing with dignity
Back to Nature has been on the market since 1994 – but Sune and Charlie had already carried out experiments and tests for many years beforehand in order to present
the perfect aquarium background. The test phase had already been completed by
the time of the presentation in 1994, by which time all the weak points had been
identified and rectified. What was presented to the market was a perfected product.

Questions to Back to Nature
?
What is a Back to Nature background?
Back to Nature backgrounds are deceptively realistic three-dimensional landscapes
that can be used in aquariums and terrariums. They can partially or completely cover
the rear glass wall and transform the aquarium into an exciting, lifelike environment
in which the animals can thrive. Back to Nature backgrounds (BTNs) not only look
good, they also have practical uses: Most animals feel more secure and can orientate
themselves better. In fact, some species do not even display their natural behaviour in
„empty“ aquariums. Another clear advantage is that all the technical equipment can
be installed out of site behind the Back to Nature. The ideal solution is to install a large biological filter behind the Back to Nature that is effective for several years without having to be cleaned.
Doesn‘t the 3D-background take up too much space in the aquarium?
On average, a 3D-background takes up a depth of 5–15 cm in the aquarium. For that reason we always recommend an aquarium with a minimum depth of 40 cm. The deeper the aquarium, the more attractive the
3D-effect. The 200 cm-long XL Amazonas background should only be used in aquariums with a minimum
depth of 70–80 cm. The Malawi background is very flat and requires only a minimum depth. On the other
hand, real stones and roots also take up a lot of space in the aquarium. However, a 3D-background displaces
considerably less water than stones for example. Use the area behind the background as a large biofilter.
Does the water behind the background have to circulate?
Yes, the water has to circulate behind the background to prevent any sources of decomposition forming. Use the free space behind the background for the filter and/or install other visually intrusive components such as flow pumps, heaters, pipes etc.
How long does a background last?
The oldest backgrounds have been under water for 25 years and are still in perfect condition. The unique manufacturing process makes Back to Nature products extremely robust
and colourfast. For this reason our aquarium products come with a 10-year guarantee.
My aquarium is taller than the background – what can I do?
If the aquarium is taller than the background, filter foam or a rigid foam board can be built in underneath the background up to a maximum height of 10 cm. These can then be covered with substrate and will no longer be visible. The 3D-backgrounds must be fixed in the middle to a glass strip or
rigid foam board on to the glass bottom of the aquarium. The rest of the area should be with filter
foam bonded to the bottom and rear wall of the aquarium. Excess foam is cut away along the length
of the background. Finally, cover the foam with silicone aquarium sealant and then cover over with
aquarium gravel or coarse sand. Make sure you are wearing disposable gloves when you do this.
How do you keep a BTN clean?

Put algae-eating fish and snails in the aquarium. The animals graze on the surfaces and keep them
clean the natural way. However, if the background does become soiled or covered with algae, simply
brush it off with a washing-up brush. The backgrounds are rugged and will not be damaged by it.

Amazonas
Aquarium background for Amazonian aquariums
The Amazon in the north of South America is the habitat of numerous aquarium fish, from cichlids to gluttonous catfish down to the tiny tetras that live in shoals. There are many different biotopes in the Amazon and
often driftwood or tree roots form an essential part of the natural environment of these fish.

It was 17 years ago that I installed my first Back to Nature background for a
customer. With Back to Nature 3D-backgrounds it is possible to highly naturalistic
biotope aquariums. The handmade backgrounds are manufactured with natural
materials and are extremely durable and colourfast – in other words an original.
Back to Nature backgrounds are characterised by their very detailed and natural
forms with recesses, projections and reef structures. These textures are particularly
impressive under LED lighting. Technical components are simply mounted behind
the background and are no longer visible. Visually intrusive kit such as pumps,
heaters and sump outlets are easily concealed disappear behind the background.

Rocky River
Rock background for aquariums and terrariums
Some popular tropical aquarium fish originate from rocky submarine landscapes. The new River rock landscape offers cichlids, catfish, tetras and other aquarium fish a naturally structured habitat. Combined with a few
stones, pieces of wood and water plants it is possible to design attractive underwater worlds. Due to its natural
structure, the appealing 3D landscape produces attractive light and shadow effect.

In my business „Fish and More“ we have been using Back to Nature backgrounds
for about 10 years. Time and again on many, particularly large projects we and our
customers have been impressed by the very good manufacturing quality of the products.
The backgrounds have no detrimental effects on water quality and remain colourfast
and dimensionally stable for many years. The backgrounds are resistant even to
tenacious loricarids. I can still remember when with other materials, we often used to
have the problem of the colour and coating peeling away, or being gnawed off by the
aquarium inhabitants. Here we award the Back
Markus Gerhardus to Nature 3D and Slimline backgrounds top
Fish and More
marks. Smaller aquariums and some tinkering
are easily implemented with the easily worked Slimline modules,
even for beginners.
I am very pleased that there is now a reef background which opens
up the possibility of fascinating saltwater design options. A wide
range of corals can be stuck directly on to the background so that the
whole background can be transformed into a living reef.
Keep it up!

Low maintenance?
There is almost nothing nicer than an aquarium that is growing and thriving. Such an
aquarium is constantly changing and is fun to work on.
However, it requires constant and comprehensive care such as light, fertilizer and cleaning.
But with a Back to Nature background in your aquarium you are always one step ahead: A
large biological filter can be set up behind the background which will remain effective for
years without needing cleaning.

Lake Malawi is the habitat of the beautiful and particularly colourful Lake Malawi cichlids, which are very
popular aquarium fish. The natural environment of these fish are normally large rugged rocks. Although
the appearance of this background is modelled on Lake Malawi it can, of course, be used in other aquarium
landscapes.

With the ‚Reef‘ background it is now possible for the first time to create a naturallooking background design with overhangs and terraces even in a saltwater
aquarium. Distracting impellers, shafts and cables can be easily concealed behind
it. Combined with a few pieces of so-called ‚live rock‘, a biologically active aquarium
background is soon created that will be rapidly colonised by corals, tubeworms,
sponges and coralline algae. The
background is resistant to algaeeaters such as doctor fish, snails and
crustaceans.
The background opens up whole new
design perspectives for reef aquariums.
For example, a sandy zone can be created with a view of a steeply
sloping reef edge. In the sandy zone lie isolated pieces of rock
on which large free-standing corals grow, just as in a real reef.
This provides sufficient space for fast-growing toadstool corals
and large colonies of Acropora to develop. Even plate- and
table-shaped corals that grow freely out into the tank establish
themselves on the background. With this design active fish have
significantly more swimming space and the water circulation
around the corals is optimised.

Orinoco and Rocky Juwel are flat, two-part
backgrounds for simple installation in aquariums
with a centre divider.
These are put together after they are inserted in the
tank and then glued into position.
On the right-hand side of each background there is a large
equipment chamber with integral inlet and outlet. This
compartment offers sufficient space even for large internal filters,
heaters and other visually intrusive aquarium components.
The large filter chamber can also be operated with the proven
back wall filtration.
The backgrounds are designed for aquariums with standard
dimensions of 80 x 40 – 120 x 50 cm.

Slimline
Extra-thin backgrounds for aquariums and terrariums
Slimline models are extra-thin backgrounds. They offer the Back to Nature quality and workmanship accurate in every detail, minimum loss of space, easy installation and attractive price. These popular backgrounds
consist of several elements with concealed joints that can be joined together as often and seamlessly as required. They are equally suitable for freshwater and saltwater aquariums and terrariums of all kinds.
The Slimline range comes in three heights: 45 cm (for aquariums up to 50 cm), 55 cm (for aquariums up to 60
cm) and 80 cm (for aquariums up to 85 cm). The 45 and 55 cm Slimline models consist of three segments. Segments A and B are 50 cm wide (but appear different), and Segment C is 20 cm wide. The 80 cm Slimline consists
of two segments: A and B, both 50 cm wide. Due to the design of their shape, the 80 cm Slimline backgrounds
can be endlessly repeated in sequence (A-B-A-B etc.).

Installing the modules
With modules you can design your individual
underwater landscape. The gluing of the rocks is
a creative and simple job in several stages. The
rocks are glued into position one by one – allow
the glue to cure for 24 hours. You can cover the
tank background with Slimline boards and glue
the modules on to them or cover the background
with black plastic film. The modules can be predecorated in the empty aquarium as required.
They can be easily cut to the required shape with
a jig saw.
Large rocks can also be divided into two. Hanging rocks create attractive depth effects. After gluing the rocks
are fixed into position by means of strips of plastic and filter foam. The glued joints are covered over with
aquarium gravel, sand or peat. Fully bonded rocks must have at least two openings in non-visible positions
for water circulation. Small holes are drilled in rocks that stand upright so that the air can escape. Offcuts
should be saved so that they can be used later to fill in attractive areas between modules. Clean the glass
before you start gluing.
Installing Slimline
1
The background is positioned behind the
aquarium. The widths and height of the tank are
transferred to the background with the help of a
rule or rod and a felt-tip pen. Allow for the
thickness of the glass + 5mm for the glue bead.

Then the background is cut along the pen
line using a handsaw (rip saw or Japanese
backsaw) or a sharp craft knife. Check whether
the background now fits or if it needs further
adjustment.
2 3 4
Clean the glass before you start gluing.
The background is now glued with aquarium
silicone. The individual Slimline elements are
now inserted along the line of the overlap and
then clamped with strips of plastic and fixed for
24 hours.

Creating a rocky biotope? – With Back to Nature -No problem

Designing a rocky biotope – with Back to Nature
that‘s not a problem.
Rocky reefs are often created in Tanganyika
and Malawi aquariums using real stones. The
stones are built up in layers from the tank base.
However, this has several disadvantages. The
weight of the stones exerts a load on the tank
base; there is a risk of cracking due to point
loading. Due to their weight, stones can only be
assembled in a standing or lying position and
the stacks of stones have little in common with a
natural biotope. The rocks also displace a large
volume of water in the aquarium. Many cichlids
dig out the sand under the rocks which can then
make the piles of stones unstable.
Back to Nature aquarium rocks on the other hand
are ideally suited for creating rocky biotopes. You
can achieve great designs with rocks overhanging
and suspended above the tank bed. Interesting
depth effects can be created and a looser, more
natural-looking rock formation. The artificial
rocks displace a minimal amount of water and
fish can use the inside of the rocks as breeding
burrows and shelters. The rough surface, which
is manufactured using real rock flour, soon
forms a natural biofilm on which the fish graze
for food as they do in nature. Combined with
different natural stones of the same appearance
and fine sand, we can easily reproduce a natural
rocky biotope. The aquarium becomes a section
of a natural biotope.
This aquarium is a modelled on a shallow water
rocky reef in Lake Tanganyika.
Aquarium stock: Tropheus moorii

Installing a 3D background
1
Installing a 3D background is easier than
you might think. Ideally, it is better if the
aquarium does not have a central divider. If
there is one, first remove it (it can be glued back
in place after the installation of the 3D
background).

2
The background is positioned behind the
aquarium. The widths and height of the tank are
transferred to the background with the help of a
rule or rod and a felt-tip pen. Allow for the
thickness of the glass + 5mm for the glue bead.
2 3
The background is then cut along the pen
line using a handsaw (rip saw or Japanese
backsaw) or a hand-held circular saw. Check
whether the background now fits or if it needs
further adjustment. Make sure there is enough
space behind the background for the filter and
service connections.
3 4 5
1
2
2 3
Using a hole cutter, drill 60 mm diameter
holes in the background at the bottom and as a
surface outlet on the top. These are used to insert
the inlet strainers for the background filter and
circulation. An overflow comb can also be
installed as a surface outlet. The inlet strainers
can be later covered with planting and
decorations.
5 6
Clean the glass before you start gluing. The
background is held in position with filter foam or
plastic strips and glued with aquarium silicone.
Useful tip: Heat the nozzle of the silicone gun
and bend it down into an L-shape Then you can
easily apply the silicone between the glass and
the background. The side joints can be covered
over with aquarium gravel or peat.
3 4
4 5
5 6
6 7
6 7
If the aquarium is taller than the
background, filter foam or a rigid foam board
can be built in underneath the background up to
a maximum height of 10 cm. All 3D-backgrounds
should be fixed in the middle to a glass strip or
rigid foam board glued to the glass bottom of the
aquarium. The rest of the area must be built up
with filter foam. This is glued to the glass bottom
and background. Excess foam is cut away along
the length of the background. Finally, cover the
foam with silicone aquarium sealant and then
cover over with aquarium gravel or coarse sand.
Make sure you are wearing disposable gloves
when you do this.
