The Bishop Miege Foundation was created in
1992 as a financial advisory group. Today its
purpose has grown to benefit Bishop Miege
by assisting the school with fundraising and
volunteer activities, advocacy in the community,
as well as expert legal and financial counsel.
This group is responsible for initiating programs
that will provide for the long-term stability of the
school, as well as the annual operational funds
available to Miege.

BISHOP MIEGE FOUNDATION DINNER
Among the highlights of the 20th Annual Bishop Miege Foundation Dinner on November 9, 2013, was
the presentation of the Herbert Rome Stewardship Award. The 2013 recipient was Mike Waldeck, who was
recognized for his longtime, exceptional commitment to Bishop Miege High School. In 1990, as a volunteer
parent, he had the vision and leadership in establishing the Miege endowment program and the Bishop Miege
Foundation. Both programs have continued to assist and ensure the long-term future of Miege. He and Sue
remain active in their commitment to the students at Miege, years after their sons have graduated, Chris (‘85),
John (‘86), and Andy (‘91)

Bob Frazier (right frame) was also recognized at the Foundation Dinner for his extraordinary contribution
to the Miege community. Beginning in 1960, Bob served as teacher, coach and as principal. In 1979,
Bob started the Miege Open Golf Tournament. The Open generated over $375,000 for scholarships that
supported 116 students over the course of 33 years. Today, his legacy continues with the Bob Frazier Alumni
Scholarship Fund providing scholarships annually for students who otherwise could not attend.

SERVING THE LESS
FORTUNATE
Our Campus Ministry program remains a hallmark of the school involving more than 300 students.
Our students are able to serve others through Corporal Works of Mercy (CWM) as revealed by our
Lord Jesus Christ in the Gospel of Matthew 25:31 and are as follows:
• To feed the hungry
• To give drink to the thirsty
• To clothe the naked
• To shelter the homeless
• To visit the sick
• To visit the imprisoned
• To bury the dead
Multiple opportunities for service are offered through the Campus Ministry Department to ensure
each student is able to fulfill the 80 hours of service required.
• Miege students have earned a national reputation for being deeply committed to serving others,
and are often called upon by the National Relief Network to help in areas affected by natural
disaster.
• It is common for students from all grades to choose to spend their Spring Break on one of many
Mission Trips scheduled each March.
• Most importantly, our students stand firm with thousands of others on a pilgrimage of prayer
and public witness to protect the lives of the defenseless at the March for Life.

ANNUAL
FUND
GIVING IN
2013 -2014
BY ALUMNI CLASS,
JULY 1, 2013 THROUGH
JUNE 30, 2014
Because tuition does not cover the
cost of educating our students, each
year the Annual Fund provides money
to meet our day-to-day expenses. The
Annual Fund consists of three phases:
mailing in the fall, the Phonathon
in January and February for those
who did not respond to the letter,
and a final request in the spring. The
Annual Fund is the largest fundraising
project of the year. It raised more than
$190,000 for the 2013-2014 year.
Thanks to the Miege community and

Members of our Campus Ministry Team spent time during Catholic Schools Week with the Little Sisters of the Lamb at their Little Monastery in KCK. The students toured the monastery,
celebrated the sacrifice of the Mass, and a fellowship lunch. The day was concluded with prayers for vocations, the Little Sisters and Brothers, and our Bishop Miege High School students!

Why I Chose Miege...
BRIDGE to the FUTURE
THE CHALLENGE
• A growing number of families face challenges affording Catholic education tuition.
• The difference between grade school and high school tuition has grown to approx. $4,500.
• An increasing number of Catholic grade school graduates are choosing public high school - 76 in 2014-15.
“I wanted to go to a school where I
could continue my Catholic faith,
which is important to me and my
family!”
D a n n y M u r ph y
• The % of families receiving financial assistance has grown from 24% (2002) to 49% (2014).
PARTNERSHIP
The BTF Fund bridges the gap between what the family can
afford to pay, and the limited financial assistance the school can offer.
SCHOOL
FAMILY
• Provides student(s) a Catholic
education at the secondary level
by paying their fair share
DONOR
Bridging the gap between
the family and the school
$2,500 per student/per year
• Provides $990,000 in financial
assistance to 49% of students
•Assists current students affected
by new or unexpected financial
challenges
I feel fortunate to have the
opportunity to help others
through Campus Ministry. The
overall experience makes me a
better person and helps me to
grow in my faith.

THE IMPACT
This year, the Bridge to the Future scholarships serve 126 of our 712 students
• 40 of those were current students who would not have been able to return without scholarship
• 38 scholarships were awarded to the Class of 2017 (Freshman)
18
“I have found a great community
at Miege. I spent 3 years in a public
school and God was not important.
At Miege, He is everything!”

SCHOLARSHIP
FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
The Senior Class of 1990 initiated an idea for their class gift. They
chose to invest money collected from their classmates along with
donations from the Student Council to provide scholarships for future
students. The senior classes since then have continued donating to the
scholarship fund.

PLANNED GIVING
WHAT IS PLANNED GIVING?
A “planned gift” can be one you give immediately, such as
stocks, property or other assets. Or, it can be one you give
later, through a bequest in your will or a t rust. Making a
“planned gift” can be extremely easy. For example, you can
add “Bishop Miege High School, Shawnee Mission, KS” as
a partial or total beneficiary of your life insurance, IRA,
pension account or other investment account.
A “planned gift” provides future support to Bishop Miege
and offers you the opportunity to extend your legacy of faith
beyond your own lifetime.
“Planned Giving” necessitates some advanced planning
to properly transfer assets. This type of giving typically
involves deferred gifts to the school.
PRESERVE THE PAST...
PROVIDE THE FUTURE
One of the hallmarks of Bishop Miege High School is the tremendous support received from our alumni, parents
and friends. This show of generosity has provided $25 million in capital improvements over the past decade. The
total renovation of our educational facility and our athletic facilities will serve students for years to come.
Currently, we are faced with the challenge of an unstable economy and the rising number of families who seek a
quality faith-filled education for their son/daughter, but do not have the necessary resources to provide one. To
ensure the growth and a secure future, we look to other means of support for the school; thus, the Bishop Miege
Legacy Society/Endowment Fund.
All gifts provide significant benefit to Bishop Miege High School while possibly:
• Increasing current income for you or others
• Reducing your income tax
• Helping to avoid capital gains
• Passing assets to your family at a reduced tax
WHY WAIT?
TYPES OF PLANNED GIFTS
• Bequests: Designate a gift to Bishop Miege in your will
or trust.
• Charitable Gift Annuity: In return for a donation,
receive a fixed income for life.
•C
haritable Remainder Trust: Transfer assets
irrevocably to a trust, receive an income for life and the
remainder goes to Bishop Miege upon your death.
• Retained Life Estate: Donate your residence to
Bishop Miege as a beneficiary on a certificate of
deposit, an annuity, IRA or retirement plan.
• Life Insurance: Designate Bishop Miege as a
beneficiary on your life insurance policy or gift a policy
you no longer need.
With the guidance from your estate planning attorney,
choose what to give.

Steve Lacy, Class of 1972, was one of the first
alumni several years ago to inform the school that Bishop Miege was
included in his estate plan. Like many individuals who make their
estate plans, it is the hope that those plans will not come to fruition
for many years. During a recent conversation with their estate
planner, Steve and his wife, Cathy, listened as their advisor explained
that the beneficiaries of their estate—including Bishop Miege-- will
not likely know who they were and most importantly, once gone,
Steve and Cathy would not see the true impact of their estate gift.
As a result, they recently announced the establishment of the Lacy
Family Scholarship Fund with a $500,000 gift to the Bridge to the
Future Endowment.
Dr. Passantino recently recognized Steve and Cathy for their
exceptional history of stewardship as well as their impressive record
of philanthropy in the Des Moines area. Even though Steve resides
a couple of hundred miles north of Bishop Miege, the school is truly
blessed by his confidence and support.
Let us know your plans. Please contact the Development Office at 913-262-2701, ext. 238 or
[email protected] with questions or to let us know you have made plans for a gift.
We would love the opportunity to thank you for your generous act. We are happy to honor your
wishes regarding anonymity.
