DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY
Progress continues on some key Recreation Campus elements
Brownstown Township’s multiphase
Recreation Campus development is expected to continue making major strides
forward this spring, including the start of
construction on the much-anticipated Event
Barn and the official debut of the new Dog
Park.
Site preparation has been under way on
King Road near the Historical Museum,
where the multipurpose Event Barn will be
built. Construction is expected to be about a
12-month process with a completion target
of spring 2013.
The new Dog Park, located near the
heart of the campus behind the Community
Center and Township Hall, is expected to
make a formal debut at a ribbon-cutting on
April 28. That will coincide with the Animal
Shelter’s annual pet license and vaccination
clinic.
Also nearing completion near the Dog
Park are the new tennis courts. Other items
on the horizon for spring and summer are
the new splash pad and playscape area

Motors and its nearby Volt Battery Assembly Plant.
Installation has been completed on several upgrades to the township’s media
broadcast capabilities.
The project, which was funded by the
Downtown Development Authority, provides
residents with easier and more complete
access to all official public meetings held at
Township Hall.
Visitors to the township board room will
now find two large presentation monitors.
One monitor is for viewing by the panel
members seated at the front of the room
and the other is for the members of the audience. Consequently, both now have the opportunity to view the same information at
the same time.
The monitors were part of a complete

Farmers Market heading to new location
It is time to start thinking of warmer weather and the Brownstown
Township weekly Farmers Market, which will begin its second season
in June.
There will be some changes this year. The location will be moved
from King Road. The new location is going to be in the parking lot in
front of the Brownstown Township Hall.
Look for updates on the Brownstown Downtown Development
Authority’s Facebook page, and also the Brownstown Township Website.
The organizers are looking for vendors to be part of the Farmers Market and also are interested in expanding the types of items to be sold.

Jerry and Patty Goodwin have
operated their business on
Allen Road in Brownstown
since 2004.
About Music Workshop
Music shop owners strike a positive chord
offering lessons, instruments and supplies
The year was 2004 and Jerry and Patty
Goodman were ready to open their own business. Jerry, who had more than 30 years in
the music business, wanted to locate in the
vicinity for the convenience of his clients.
They came upon a 600-square-foot shop
that was available at 19486 Allen Road, on
the west side of the street near Downriver
Bus Repair, between Sibley and King roads,
in Brownstown Township.
“In 2004, there weren’t too many buildings available,” Goodman remembered. “My
wife thought this was
the cutest place. I
originally thought it
wasn’t big enough. We
talked to the landlord,
who said that whenever we were ready to
expand, he could accommodate us.”
And Music Workshop was born. The
store may be small in stature, but it’s big on
supplies and service. The shop is packed
with instruments, parts (including hard-tofind parts) and accessories, school band
supplies, amplifiers, music books, song
sheets, method books and DVDs. The staff
provides high-quality repairs and music lessons for all sorts of instruments in three
studios.
“We offer a free set up on every instrument we sell (a $45 value),” Goodman said.
“That includes neck adjustment, action and
intonation of the instrument to make it play

well and sound good.”
Goodman started taking guitar lessons
when he was 8 years old. He began teaching
at age 16 and has been doing it ever since.
He played for several years professionally in
the 1970s.
Music Workshop has 70 students of
various levels. Many of them take guitar
lessons, but others play the banjo, violin or
piano. Music lessons also are available for
the bass, mandolin, ukulele, voice, theory
and all brass and woodwind instruments.
“We have students that have been coming here for years,” Goodman said. “They’re
into it. Some practice three hours a day. One
went on to the School of Rock Camp and
blew everybody away.”
The workshop also is home to beginning
musicians who purchase a less-expensive
guitar or another musical instrument and
take lessons. Starter guitar packages are
available.
Goodman said there has been a shift in
guitar sales in recent years.
“I have noticed in the last several years
that the acoustic guitar has become more
popularized,” he said. “I used to sell 2-to-1
electric guitars over acoustics. Now it’s 2-to2 acoustics over electric. I believe it’s because acoustics are now a bigger part of
heavy metal music. The folk style of many
singers has made the acoustic guitar popular again.”
Longtime customer Randy Cole of Lincoln Park said he is always impressed with
the parts available at Music Workshop and

enjoys how the shop is so well organized
and inventoried. Cole buys new and used
parts, including strings for his guitar.
“I come here for the lowest prices in
town on the best-quality stuff,” said Cole,
who is retired from Great Lakes Steel. “It’s
small. It’s intimate. Other places have eight
million guitars and kids who just learned
what a guitar was last week. These guys
have integrity, honesty and you don’t have
to worry about anything.”
Strings, reeds, drumsticks, drumheads,
harmonicas and picks are discounted every
day.
Goodman spends much of his time
repairing instruments – guitars, of course,
but also band instruments, amps and
equipment. He has staff to repair keyboards as well.
“Anything music-related we take an
interest in,” he said.
Area musicians gather to perform outside Music Workshop on various warmweather weekends. Goodman said he plans
to expand that to an acoustic festival
probably toward the end of August. He will
invite local talent to perform acoustic music an entire weekend. The shows will be
free for performers and the public.
The Goodmans are prepared to expand
at the current location when the economy
improves.
“We love it here,” Jerry Goodman said.
“Brownstown has been very good to us.
We’re kind of in the middle of seven different communities. We love the area.”
