Movin’ on Up… A District Win, a Tourney
Win, & a Spot in the State Top Ten
What a week it has been for
the Volleyball Centurions!
Thursday evening, CAL visited the Ballard Bruins for another District match. The
desire to win filled the gym
on both sides. Game one
started with an intimidating
back row attack by Caroline
Rassenfoss. CAL then took an ear ly seven point lead, and
though Ballard pulled within two toward the end, a deep kill from
Kasey Wilmsmeyer finished the game in CAL’s favor . CAL
dominated match two after a thirteen serve run by Jill Von Hoven
built an early lead.

1-2 Finish for O'Dea & Lynch
Madalyn O'Dea and
Clara Lynch finished
1-2 for the third time
this cross country season, sweeping the top
two spots at the
Atherton Invitational. Mad-O and Clara
seized the lead just before the mile and then steadily distanced themselves from the field. Mad-O broke the tape in a
time of 20:45, with Clara finishing closely with her 20:53,
on the challenging course. (continued on pg. 4)

A Week of Tough Competition for CAL Field Hockey
The Varsity field
hockey team
faced some of
their toughest
competition of
the season last
week. On Tuesday the Centurions were away,
facing the defending state champion Assumption Rockets. The
Rockets came out firing first, quickly putting a point on the
board, but within a minute Allie Grace Joyner answered back,
and the score was tied at 1-1.

CAL Girls Varsity Soccer
gets District Win and has
a Thriller in Bardstown
It was a night of “3’s” when CAL took on KCD last Tuesday. Haleigh Fortuna had “3” goals (commonly referred to
as a “hat trick”). She also had “3” assists. Freshman Anna
Pohlman had a str ong two goal per for mance but she
also hit the crossbar or post “3” times! “Three” midfielders contributed one goal each including Allie Blackburn,
Liana Forwith and Sarah Embry. Dana and Ellen J oss
rounded out the scoring with a goal apiece. It was Ellen’s
first goal this year, and also in her CAL career to date.
(continued on pg. 6)
Ballard regrouped in game three, made adjustments, and became a bit more formidable going head-to-head in early play. With Ballard taking a momentary
lead at 5-4, CAL displayed their flexibility as Abby Davis made a low pass to middle Casey Jane Mann, who followed with a beautiful, unchar acter istic
set to normal setter Kate Amin for a smooth lefty kill. Not going
down without a fight, Ballard tied the score at 13, 14, 15, 16, and 19.
But, CAL was not about to give this District match away. The Centurions took charge to finish in a clean sweep (25-21, 25-6, 25-21).
Subsequently, on Friday, when the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association updated
their bi-weekly poll, CAL broke into the top ten in spot #9. This well-deserved rank
moved five slots up from the KVCA pre-season #14 assessment.
Friday after the Senior Carnival, CAL traveled three hours to play in the Quad
State tournament in Paducah, Kentucky, along with 31 other teams from Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, and Tennessee. Many of the senior six-pack remembered their Sophomore year when the team returned with a runner-up trophy
after a tough match against McCracken County. Friday night’s matches started with the Carbondale (IL) Terriers. Though true to their name, this tenacious team could not compete with CAL, who won easily (25-17, 25-14).
Pumped up, CAL then blew past the Warren County Warriors (25-12, 25-9). Back in the gym late Saturday
morning, CAL started play in the Gold bracket with an easy win against the Marshall County Lady Marshalls
(25-21, 25-6).
Next up, CAL took on Apollo in a grudge match. Having knocked CAL out of the semis at the Blue Grass
Invitational in September, CAL wanted to return the favor in this tournament. Just like the first meeting,
CAL easily won the first match by eleven points. Again, like the first meeting, Apollo made smart adjustments in game two and took the set. The fans cringed, thinking a repeat of the previous meeting might be in
the offing. But the team had other ideas, leaving the Eagles in the dust to take the match and earn a spot in
the finals (25-14, 20-25, 15-9). Kudos go to Freshmen Emily Amin for a great serving run during tense moments in this match, as well as Maddie Lewis, who made some clutch serves and displayed her outstanding
passing skills. (continued on next page)

CAL’s opponent in the finals, the scrappy Owensboro Catholic
Aces, brought on some trepidation given they beat CAL in the semis
of this same tournament last year. Game one started badly with
the Aces taking an early six point lead. Picking away one-by-one,
CAL fought back to tie the score at 8-8. Ties then followed at 14,
15, 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20. At this point, Hadley Trenaman took a
strong stance and and served five in a
row. A final back row attack by Caroline won the fir st game in CAL’s favor . With a gr eat battle at the net by
Kate, CAL put the fir st point of game two on the boar d. A four -point serving
run by Abby added to it. With Hadley not about to give in and continuing to dig
like a maniac on the back row, both Kate and Hannah Wilhite fed perfect sets to
Kasey and Casey Jane for some excellent hits fr om the middle. Sever al signature combos from Jill (pass) - Kate
(set) - Caroline (kill) added to the
score. Though tied briefly at 9s, CAL
was clearly in charge of game two,
winning the TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP in two sets (25-21, 25-20). It seemed only fitting that
this Senior-led team, many of whom have played for CAL since
the second grade, would finally bring this tournament win home to
CAL.
This week, CAL will play sister school and challenging
rivals at Christian Academy Indiana on Tuesday and Collins at home on Thursday. Come watch this exciting squad
in action!

Jessica Wellum ran her best race of the season, to come in next for the Lady Centurions. Morgan McIntire and Taylor Moon also ran strongly, to
complete the team's score of 96 points to finish 4th in the 15-team invite. It
was a very good showing for the 2-time defending State Runner-Ups, as
they continue to develop and prepare for the post-season.
Steven Ott ran well, recording a top
10 finish against several state-ranked
individuals. Steven ran a near PR
time of 17:40 on the tough course,
slowed by many turns and short,
steep hills. Samuel Hazelip and
Brendan Sullivan as is their habit, worked most of the race together,
before deciding their order with the
kick. This time Samuel came our on top by 2 seconds and 1 place. First
year runners continued to fill key roles for the Centurions, as Charles Austin Sams and Jack-Harold Enyeart
completed the scoring for the team's 6th place team finish. Zach Bohannon and Jacob Miller also had good
races.

Before half time the Rockets were able to put in two more goals, and
CAL went into the break down my 2. The CAL offense worked hard
in the second half to get something going, but Assumption’s quick interceptions of attempted passes made it difficult to break through into
scoring territory. The CAL defense did a tremendous job fighting off
a number of offensive attacks by the Rocket offense, but midway into
the second half Assumption was able to score again. Now down 4-1,
the CAL offense focused on narrowing the margin, and a beautiful
goal by Jacqueline Wilkins put the score at 4-2. In the last minute of
the game Assumption was able to score one last goal on a penalty corner play, and the game ended with a 5-2
loss for the Centurions.
On Thursday the team was at home against one of their district
foes, the Ballard Bruins. Always a strong team, the Bruins were
the first to score, and the CAL offense had to work hard to make
up ground. A pass from Allie Grace Joyner to Taylor Curran set
up a perfect shot for Curran, and with that goal the game was tied
at 1-1. A back and forth offensive duel ensued, with both teams’
defenses blocking a number of shots, and soon Ballard was back
in the lead 2-1. As the minutes wound down, CAL continued to
fight, and a breakaway by Jacqueline Wilkins was just what the
Centurions needed to tie
the game back up at 2-2. With seeding for the district tournament on
the line, both teams were fighting hard for the victory, but at the end
of regulation time the scored was still tied at 2-2. A 10 minute, sudden death, 7 versus 7 overtime began, and despite numerous attempts
by the CAL offense to score, the Bruins were the first with a goal,
and the Centurions left
the field disappointed
with a 3-2 loss.
This was a tough week for the team, but the Centurions are
ready to take another shot at their competition this week, with
three weeknight games and a weekend game against a visiting
team from St. Louis. No matter the outcomes, this team wins
and loses TOGETHER, and that always counts as a win! Go

CAL 10 KCD 2
Coach Zutt started the game with a new lineup including forwards Jessica Bozell and Gina Sabbak, midfielders Nicole Davis, Ellie Tallman, Kim Riddett and Maddie Hawes, and a back line of Saxby Spencer,
Sarah Embry, Katie Cloyd and Lily Evans. In goal was Natalie McQuade. This gr oup wor ked har d
for the first fourteen minutes, connecting on many passes and making a few good runs. With fresh players
entering the game, Haleigh Fortuna scored her first goal at 21:31. After several shots on goal by Dana Joss,
Anna Pohlman and Haleigh, Anna knocked in her fir st scor e at 15:11 on an assist by Allie Blackburn.
Roles were soon reversed and Allie scored off an Anna assist (Anna’s shot hit off right post and Allie pounded in the rebound) just 2 minutes later! Dana Joss rounded out the first half scoring with a left footed hammer job at 10:19, assisted by Haleigh. Halftime score was CAL 4 KCD 2.
The second half was all CAL. Haleigh scored her second goal at 38:23. Anna connected for her second goal
of the night at 33:24, outrunning the defense to blast a beautiful diagonal pass from Haleigh into the net.
CAL peppered the goalie for several minutes, with shots by Dana, Anna, and Olivia. Liana Forwith got
into the act with a sweet shot into goal at 24:54. CAL 7-2!! Haleigh finished her hat trick at 22:29 with a
long high-arcing shot over the goalie who was off her line. In the 61st minute, Ellen Joss overlapped in attack from her right back position, collected a pass from sister Dana and pasted a shot past the goalie and into
the net. Finally at 12:11, Sarah Embry knocked in her second goal of the year off a Laura English corner
kick. Final score CAL 10 KCD 2 in this district game.

CAL 5 vs. Thomas Nelson 6
Thursday’s game at Thomas Nelson was perhaps the most exciting of the season despite resulting in a narrow
5-6 loss. The girls gave everything they had on the field versus a seasoned Thomas Nelson side composed
primarily of upperclassmen, including 7 seniors. After falling behind early and down 5-2 at the half, CAL
furiously fought back to a 5-4 deficit in the second half before succumbing in the end. Haleigh Fortuna recorded her second consecutive hat trick that included two very long bombs! Olivia Warren and Liana Forwith
played masterfully in the midfield, stealing numerous passes, and distributing to Anna Pohlman or Haleigh at
forward positions, or to Dana Joss and Allie Blackburn on the wings to set up the outside/inside game. Dana
and Allie played their hearts out, covering massive amounts of space up and back as Thomas Nelson kicked
the long ball forward all night. The back line’s play was spectacular, having to relentlessly contend with perhaps one of the best forwards in the state. Center backs Laura English and Maura Bennett faced most of the
pressure and both provided fans with play worthy of a highlight reel. Ellen Joss and Clair Ashley at outside
backs not only provided stellar defensive play all night against older physical opponents, but got into the attack at times up the sidelines.
Thomas Nelson struck first, just 40 seconds into the game with a lightning attack to go up 1-0. But just one
short minute later, Anna Pohlman ran down a long diagonal pass, and hammered it home to knot the score at
1-1. But Thomas Nelson tallied quick scores on the follow, netting a goal three minutes later and another
just two minutes after that to make it 3-1 only 7 minutes into the game!! But, our girls kept fighting, and
Haleigh Fortuna cr ushed a long bomb fr om 35 yar ds out to sur pr ise ever yone and make it 3-2 at the
28:19 mark. Thomas Nelson’s star forward scored twice more in the first half’s last five minutes to make it
5-2 at the break.
It would have been easy for the girls to pack it in down by that much, but they showed a spirit and resolve
that is developing into a trademark for this 2015 CAL team. They do not give up!! They controlled possession for the first 10 minutes of the second half and kept pressure on Thomas Nelson’s defense while reeling
off shot after shot. Then, in the 29th minute, Laura English intercepted a deep ball, dribbled to midfield and
lofted a long pass to Dana Joss streaking up the left side. As the goalie came out, Dana carved the ball away
and pasted a sharp cross to a patiently waiting Haleigh in front of goal. Haleigh calmly did what she does
best….SMASHED IT INTO THE NET!! It was now 3-5. Less than two minutes later Maura Bennett flew
through the box to put a first class header off a Haleigh corner kick into the net for her second goal of the
season!! What a play!! It was 4-5!! Thomas Nelson managed another goal to go up 4-6 at 25:18. But, CAL
continued to fight hard and Haleigh scored on a 40+ yard second bomb of the night to complete her hat trick
at 18:34! It was 5-6!! The last 18 minutes was a mad scramble as CAL got shot after shot, but could not get
another one into goal. What an exciting comeback, though! CAL is going to surprise some teams down the
road with the determined, gritty play.
Next week CAL travels to North Bullitt Thursday for an early 5:30 pm game, and will host South Laurel at
home Saturday, October 3rd at 12 noon. Come out and watch this spirited team play!

What was a deciding factor in coming to coach at CAL?
CAL not only has a reputation for excellence but also allows me to invest in the spiritual lives of
student athletes.
What is your vision for the CAL cheerleading program?
I want the girls to have fun and promote school spirit while being a high level competitive team.
How long have you coached cheerleading?
I have a combined four years of gymnastics and cheer coaching. I have a strong background in
dance, gymnastics, and cheerleading and had the opportunity to cheer at Johnson University
while in college.
What do you look forward to most this year?
I look forward to getting to know the girls and helping them achieve their goals. They are a very
talented group and we will have a fun and successful year.
How can you be distinctive as a cheer team for Christ?
I believe that cheerleaders can be looked at as ambassadors of the school. I hold my girls to a
high standard because of this, and they are aware of the expectations. We end every practice with
prayer and try to be encouraging to not only the football and basketball teams, but for all sports.
What experiences, coaching or cheering, have shaped your faith?
With any sport, coaches are looked up to and I definitely admired the different coaches in my
life. It was easy to see which coaches were Christians because their temper would be more controlled and they would be more encouraging.

Men’s Varsity Battles Hard in Male Bulldog Cup, Loses 1st Round in PKs
On Tuesday, Sept. 22, the CAL Varsity Men’s Soccer Team began
its ride in the annual Male High School Bulldog Cup, facing the
Male Bulldogs. Despite dominating possession of the ball for the
majority of the game, the Centurions ended regulation in a 2-2 tie.
The Bulldogs took the first big bite when they plowed right
through the CAL defense in the first minutes of the game, netting a
goal right away. That propelled the Centurions to wake up and
they picked up their pace, their attack, and their pressure on the
ball. However, in the 15th minute, a Male forward was able to
launch a high shot that arched perfectly into the goal just under the crossbar, after tipping off the top off
keeper Parker Andres’ outstretched hands. Bulldogs up 2-0.
CAL kept continual pressure on Male, with the stalwart back line of Eric Quinton, Nathan Shepherd, Holton
Durenberger, and Chandler Anderson wor king har d to keep the ball out of the box. Seth Yeoman,
Asher Benge, Justin Montgomery, and Curtis Jackson consistently winning the ball in the middle and
distributing well to the Centurion attackers. Finally in the 24th minute, junior Tyler Green crossed a hard,
low ball from outside the 18 that bounced off the far post into the goal, putting CAL on the scoreboard. Seven minutes later, sophomore Noah Wilcox launched an amazing shot from far outside the 18, soaring over
Males goalkeeper, tallying the second goal for CAL for the evening and tying the game for the half.
In the second half, both teams rallied and came out playing
strong. CAL’s shots nearly doubled Male’s, with the majority of
the play being in front of the Male goal. At 30 minutes into the
half, Larkin Mann’s shot hit the crossbar. Yeoman followed with
two shots that narrowly missed the goal. Alas, the horn sounded
and the Centurions were faced with a round of penalty kick’s to
determine the winner, for the third time this season!
In PK’s, each goalkeeper managed to save one shot, but in the final round, CAL’s missed shot sent the Bulldogs on to victory.
Senior Seth Yeoman was awarded the Warrior Award for his determination and relentless pursuit of the ball,
skill in the middle, and attack on the goal.
CAL 2 vs N. Oldham 1
CAL had a rematch in the Bulldog Cup versus North Oldham Thursday night. CAL started off quickly with a goal by Seth Yeoman past
the diving Mustang goalie. CAL didn’t sit on the lead, the Centurions kept attacking and went up 2-0 on a goal from Eric Quinton with
10 minutes left in the half. The second half saw North Oldham much
more aggressive and their offense broke through with a goal mid way
thru the second half to make the score 2-1. That turned out to be the
final score as North Oldham came up short and CAL was able to
avenge a home loss from earlier in the season.

WINNING WEEK FOR GIRLS VARSITY GOLF
Christian Academy defeated Collegiate 211-222 at Cherokee golf course on September 21. Grace Walker
shot 46, Madison Corrigan carded 49, and Emily Neat and Ashton Edwards both finished with 58.
The team was victorious again on September 24, beating Presentation 187-197. Grace Walker had the low
round with a score of 39. Emily Neat shot 47, Madison carded 48, and Ashton Edwards finished with 53.
Heading into the regional tournament this week, the team is playing with confidence. The regular season
record is 7-6, with many of those wins coming late in the season. The regional tournament is Tuesday, September 29 at Weissinger Hills Golf Course.
JV FIELD HOCKEY RIVALRY WEEK
The title of this article really says it all! Tuesday evening the Lady Centurions arrived for a game against a
very talented Assumption team. We all knew this game was going to be a battle but our Lady Centurions had
something to prove. After a tough loss in pre-season play against Assumption our ladies wanted to prove
they were not a team to be underestimated.
This game quickly became a defensive game. Our talented defenders Adelaide Ensor, Sarah Chastain and
Alexis Taylor had a lot of playing time on CAL’s end of the field. Goalie, Sam Minrath had 19 saves during
this intense encounter. CAL only had 5 shots on goal for the entire game. The pressure our defense and
midfielders put on the Assumptions offenders was relentless and when half-time came the score was 0-0.
Unfortunately, about 10 minutes into the second half Assumption was able to capitalize on one of their corner plays. Even though CAL had an opportunity to tie the game in the last minute with a corner the Lady
Rocket defense was able to deflect the shot and end the game. This game was a heartbreaker with a score of
0-1. Our Lady Centurions definitely proved they are not going to let any opponent win without an intense
battle.
Thursday evening our ladies were back at it but this time they were hosting the Ballard Bruins. This game
would not allow our defenders and midfielders any time to recuperate as Ballard game out strong. The Lady
Bruins were able to score quickly with a corner shot. The defense were on their toes and due their aggressive
game play were able to hold the score 0-1 going into half-time. Our ladies came out strong and determined
after half-time but it wasn’t too long into the second half and the Bruins were able to score again. This was
another defensive battle to the very end. The score of 0-2 doesn’t reflect the intensity and determination our
Lady Centurions played with for the entire game.
Even though this was a tough week for the JV team, they should be proud of the way they held off some very
talented competition.
10
CAL 26 vs. KCD 14
Coming off a hard fought loss to North Oldham, the young Centurions hoped
to secure their third victory of the year against Country Day. A winning record was on the line as CAL came into the game with two wins and two losses. Nathan Green, Luke Paulson and Lukas Felty anchored the defense
while Christian Babin and Tanner Palin led the CAL rushing attack. CAL
jumped ahead to a quick 14-0 lead. The offensive line of Brendan Hafling,
Seth Miller, Jack Payne, Nathan Green, Jack Griffin and Trent Wilburn
moved the pile while Babin and Palin found the holes. Both Babin and Palin
scored touchdowns. Quarterback Evan Boggs continued his breakout season targeting wideouts Luke
Paulson, Elijah Smith, Lukas Felty and Luke Chambers.
Country Day did not go down without a fight closing
the gap in the lead with some timely scores. The
CAL defense stiffened. The d-line dominated in the trenches. Lukas Felty, Nathan
Green, Justin Howes and others ate up the o-line blocks. Linebackers Luke Paulson,
Luke Chambers and Jack Payne protected the middle and the edges while safety Elijah Smith and corner Luke Purvis cleaned up the rest. CAL added a few more scores
and saw their record move to 3-2 on the season behind a 26-14 victory. The team is
on an extended break and looks to move to 4-2 on October 12 at Henry County. There are on two games left on the JV schedule. Come out and support our team
as they hope to finish the season on a three game winning streak and with a 5-2 record!!!

CAL WRECKS WESTPORT’S UNDEFEATED SEASON IN GRAND STYLE
This week in 8th Grade Football was huge for the Centurions. They faced their
toughest opponent yet in the undefeated Westport Warhawks. The first couple
of possessions were uneventful for both teams, but then the CAL defense took
control. Jacob Sutherland intercepted a deep pass and with great blocking returned the ball all the way to the Westport 5 yard line. Harrison Zimmerer finished things off behind the powerful CAL line, and the extra point pass to Jake
Taylor was as if he had never been out for the past few games due to an injury.
CAL now led 8-0. Westport tried around the ends to no avail, as well as up the
middle with no luck, so they tried to throw the ball. That turned into a bad
idea. Anthony Sabatino intercepted one pass and returned it for 6. A perfect
pass from Grant Russell to Luke Leeper put CAL up 16-0. Westport turned it
over on downs and the next time CAL got the ball another big run by Jacob
Sutherland set up Sabatino for a score and the rout was on. Braden and
Brandt Babin added some big hits while Henry Fetter and John Young
stuffed the middle. To add insult to injury, Harrison Zimmerer intercepted
the last pass of the half and returned it for another defensive touchdown.
CAL led at the half 30-0.
With a running clock in the second half CAL took it easy on offense, but the
defense never let up. John Young caused a fumble that was recovered by
Braden Babin and a blocked punt set up CAL’s final score, a long run by
Brandt Babin. That ended the game with a final score of Christian Academy 36, Westport Warhawks 0. That snapped Westport’s winning streak and
set CAL up for a big game this Friday night under the lights against Johnson
Middle. Go CAL!

The 5/6 Centurions took on the Shelbyville Cowboys (5-1)
on Saturday in Shelbyville, Ky. The team was led by
touchdowns from Robert Ehrenborg, Gavin Willis, Baylor Hill and
Conner Carr. Extra points were made by Adam Ballard and Conner
Carr. Ben Strong led the offensive effort for the Centurions. Yards
gained from Adam Ballard, McKade Battcher, Conner Carr, Robert
Ehrenborg, Ben Strong, Caleb Thompson, and Gavin Willis. The offensive line had good blocks and effort led by center Jacob Price.
Gavin Willis had a interception to ignite a fire in the offense game.
