Welcome!
The Supply Chain Management Summer School offers an ideal
opportunity for a selected group of highly-motivated and talented
students from the National University of Singapore and the University of
Applied Sciences Upper Austria to experience challenging real business
cases and workshops in the field of Supply Chain Management. This
intensive, two-week programme was designed in cooperation with The
Logistics Institute (TLI) - Asia Pacific and combines sophisticated theory
with hands-on practical experience in industry.
The School of Management Steyr started with its first degree programme
in 1995 and is one of the pioneers of the University of Applied Sciences
sector. Excellent education, ideal preparation for professional life and
internationality which is lived through connections to more than 100
partner universities worldwide make studying and working here special. In
each academic year there are about 1250 students on campus. Currently,
nearly 3600 Steyr graduates are working in various industry sectors. The
Supply Chain Management degree programme has achieved top-position
in Austrian rankings for more than 5 years in a row. Over 50 professors
and research associates are scientifically active in our research areas.
The LOGISTIKUM as the joint research- and education institute in the
field of logistics provides content with high practical relevance, excellent
job perspectives, innovative solutions for companies, and state-ofthe-art expertise in research. In our society and economy international
cooperation of partners throughout the value chain is of fundamental
importance. Supply Chain Management forms the backbone of our entire
connected economy.
Steyr’s productiveness has always been based on trade and the
processing of iron and steel, which may explain why global players like
BMW, MAN and SKF Bearings chose to locate here. In keeping with
the industrial history, our main university building is a converted former
factory, which has been fully equipped with up-to-date technology.
A new building has been constructed next to it, comprising seminar
rooms, lecture halls and computer labs. We are located in the very centre
where the river Steyr flows into the river Enns. Few Austrian cities are as
delightful as the historic city of Steyr, nearly the entire old town has been
preserved in its original glory. Many waterways and bridges symbolise the
need to reach out to the future and to other parts of the world.

to a successful SCM future!

Summer School set-up
The summer school cases follow the logic and the lines of a supply chain

usage of multimodal transport to utilize transport,
set-up of SCM in a company from scratch down to customer delivery,
customer segmentation,
and ending with the question of last-mile delivery.

The time required to complete a case takes from 1,5 to 2 days depending on the location
of the partner company and the complexity and difficulty of the case.
Lectures
Prof. Dr. Markus Gerschberger
Markus Gerschberger is professor for supply chain management at the
University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria and heads the research
group ‘Supply Chain Management’ at Logistikum Steyr. He has more than
40 publications in refereed journals, books and conference proceedings.
He was honored in 2013 with Emerald’s highly commended paper award
and as first-runner up for the Austrian Logistics price. In 2011, he was
awarded as young researcher of the year of the University of Applied
Sciences Upper Austria.
Lisa-Maria Putz, MA
Lisa-Maria Putz is research project manager in the area of sustainable
freight transport at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria.
She heads the research group ‘Research and Education on Eco-Friendly
Transport’ and does a PhD about motivational aspects in teaching
sustainable development. She received a price as young researcher of
the year 2014 of the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria. In
2015 she received a scholarship of the Sohmen Far East Foundation and
spent one month in Asia to establish a (scientific) network about inland
waterway freight transport in Asia.
Prof. DI Hans-Christian Graf
Hans-Christian Graf is Professor for Logistics and Logistics Technologies
at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria since 2008. His
research focus is on Physical internet technologies, geo positioning and
real time decision making technologies in warehousing and transport. He
represents 25 years of management experience in logistics businesses in
Austria and Central Europe and is author of the white book for logistics
technologies. His present interest is in business integration and business
models for coopetition.
Prof. Dr. Efrem Lengauer
Efrem Lengauer is professor for logistics at University of Applied Sciences
Upper Austria and program coordinator for the Bachelor Program
‘International Logistics-Management’ at Logistikum Steyr. His research
and teaching activities focus on supply network design and last mile
logistics. In 2015, he won the Best Project Award in the Mobility of the
Future Program by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Transport.

This case focuses on supplier management through quantitative and qualitative analysis of
data from a real company. In the process of solving the case, students have to determine and
operationalize what constitutes a critical supplier, make sense of the data provided, and identify

Workshop content
The workshop focuses on efficient multimodal transport planning with regard to cost, time and
CO2 emissions. Students receive a theoretical introduction on multimodal transport and on
European waterways (focus Danube). Based on this information they will simulate an optimized
transport solution on the LEGO-transhipment simulator. Following to a port visit as well as
a company tour they will receive a transport case which they have to work out and present
individually on day two at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria.

Although the consumption of classical frozen food is stable since several years there is a
constant change in the European frozen food market. New products or product lines appear
and market players change. Because frozen food logistics is the most expensive food supply
chain, retailers tend to outsource this specific field. The Austrian TKL group acts as partner
for international producers and regional retailers. To meet the challenges of the market and to
achieve best service levels a logistics solution has to be created for: imports of frozen products,
central/decentral warehousing, shop distribution to more than 1000 outlets and to gastronomy
businesses.

This case focuses on customer relationship management. The idea is that different customer
requirements lead to different logistics services needed to satisfy customers. Different logistics
services create different costs and therefore should be billed to customers. Idea of this case is
that students develop a procedure on how to systematically create channels and logically assign
customers through quantitative and qualitative analysis of data from a real company. Finally costs
per ton of steel per channel have to be calculated.

Finance and Costs
Teaching fees and business trips are sponsored by the University of Applied
Sciences Upper Austria. All travel and accommodation expenses have to be covered by the participants. Hotels range from € 70,- to 180,- (app. SGD 100,- to 270,-)
per night and person. Taxis from the nearest Airport in Linz (www.linz-airport.com) to
Steyr cost app. € 60,- per trip. Traintickets from Steyr to Vienna and back are about
€ 70,- (www.oebb.at/en).
