Description
De Stijl is part of our everyday modern lives from graphic
design, to furniture and architecture. The idea of the movement
being very influential is the basis of this two-page editorial
spread. We can see this “New Style” in the main image of the
Bauhaus building. The image, black and white, holds the primary
colours that are used in the art movement. The perspective of
the building emphasizes the idea that the movement was very
influential as well as creating leading lines to draw the eye to
the text. The type used for the body copy is Futura Medium and
Condensed Medium to give it a crisp, precise look.

Description
The two elements of an advertising campaign show
a photographic exhibition at the ROM of Dr. Mark
Nowaczynski. Dr. Mark captures his patients in black and
white images, in their environment spotlighting their
isolated, hidden world.
Reinforcing Dr. Mark’s objective, in the poster, my own
black and white photograph illustrates the patient/caregiver
relationship. The warm bands of red-brown hold the image
and the white lettering, Helvetica Nueva Ultra Light, create a
headline that pops but maintains class (dignity), which reflects
the character of the subject. The slogan, “hitting the road” hints
at the message as well as a call out to the audience to come in
and see the show as it is placed close to the exhibit information.
In the ad the placement of the headline forms a frame around the
man’s face that draws the eye directly to him.

but are in too much pain, or too immobile, to step outside their own front doors.

The colours; arresting hot pink, playful orange, green and yellow are
used to brighten up the design. In the spirit of 1950’s designers, Paul
Rand and Saul Bass, simple shapes with minimal detail were used
to create a spotlight an armchair and bookcase to reinforce the
entertainment/empowerment theme.
The font, Helvetica Nueva, light and ultra light were used to
give the design a contemporary, clean feel. Coupled with the
vibrant colours and simple shapes, the font makes the brochure
accessible.

These same words flow from the bookcase in their individual
word bubbles to create interest; the kerning and tracking were
tightened and expanded to create tension and cause the viewer
to look closer. The shapes also symbolize that education,
entertainment and empowerment flow from books.

The common denominator of any library is words and letters
which are incorporated in a pattern as the background. Patterns
subconsciously create comfort. To solve the problem of how to
illustrate the theme a thesaurus was used, educate, entertain and
empower were examined to come up with a list of words used as
the background pattern.

Poster - UN General Assembly’s Universal Declaration of
Human Rights, Article 1
Description
A white sheet that covers the model was used to symbolize the
the White Ribbon campaign. Photograph and modelling were
done by myself. The folds of the material create lines that draw
the viewer’s attention to the text and image. The grays make the
intensity of the message ‘sneak up’ on the viewer. The use of
material over the face removes the age and identity and ‘colour’
of the model creating a universal idea; it could be anyone under
there.
Hand-rendered words were used to create a personal feel, to
engage and draw in the viewer. Capitals were used to create
emphasis on points in the article. ‘and sisterhood’ was added, in
colour, bringing emphasis to the main message, angled upward
to finish positively.
