The color a woman chooses for her hair says a lot about her
personality – and knowing that her hair looks vibrant and shiny and
is soft to the touch gives her confidence a welcome boost.
So the last thing she needs is a color that fades quickly to leave her
hair looking dull and lifeless.
However, market research indicates that current hair color products
are prone to fading, and that most color protection products fail to
live up to their promise. Understandably, therefore, people are
searching for more reliable color protection products.

Mega trends lead people to modify their behavior, and one consequence
of such trends is an increase in hair coloring. Of course, there are
several reasons why people color their hair but an astonishing 72% of
people, when asked, said it makes them feel more physically attractive,
hence increasing their confidence and sense of wellbeing.
DSM ColorLock shampoo is effective in preventing the wash out of hair
dyes. The improved performance was tested over 18 hair washes and is
clearly visible, with ΔE values higher than 7 on a red color shade (Fig.1).
In general, red color shades are more prone to wash out than brownish
ones (Fig.1, Fig.2).
The best-selling colors are shades of brown, with red shades picking up
fast. But regardless of color, long-lastingness is the No1 claim (63%) for
all products. In consequence COLOR CARE is one of the largest benefits
areas within the care segment, and one that is still growing.

Unfortunately, 71% people are currently dissatisfied with the performance
of market products and view claims as empty marketing-speak. They
are eager for products that maintain a rich color while keeping their hair
looking vibrant and shiny, and feeling soft.

What causes color fading?
The long-lastingness of hair color is known to be influenced by diverse
factors, whereas the following ones can be considered as key:

•UV-light

New scientific findings by DSM have revealed that red color shades are
very prone to wash out but less sensitive to UV-light, whereas brown
color shades are more sensitive to UV-light but slower to wash out.
