IT’S A BIG WORLD IN HERE
The centrepiece for this uplifting new season is the world premiere musical
The Little Prince. This musical journey will take you around the planet and
catapult you into the universe on an odyssey that will delight your senses
and inspire your imagination. A musical has never been this thrilling – and
Calgarians will see it first! Captivating melodies bring wonderful characters
from a beloved, classic story to life.
This gorgeous new production is emblematic of all that Theatre Calgary has
become: bold, original and daring. I’ve recently celebrated ten years as Artistic
Director of this distinguished company. It’s been a decade of absolute delight.
Together we’ve enjoyed extraordinary productions, outstanding artists,
national and international collaborations and a multitude of world premieres.
The excitement has only begun. In a few years we will celebrate our 50th
season and the party planning has begun. You’ll notice we have updated
our logo: fresh and direct. And watch for changes to our website this
summer as we launch a new design to give you better access to our activities.
I invite you to subscribe to this season full of hope and possibility. As Theatre
Calgary continues to be a gathering place for creative ideas, I think you’ll find
that, indeed, it is a big world in here.
Welcome.

The Shoplifters
by Morris Panych
Directed by Haysam Kadri
Alma is a career shoplifter with a knack for the “five-finger
discount.” When she’s caught in the act by an overzealous
security guard, there’s more revealed than the steak she has
stuffed up her skirt. With a cast of oddball characters, this
new comedy is a hilarious look at the differences between
society’s haves and have-nots.
“PACKS A COMIC PUNCH”
dctheatrescene.com
There is no doubt: Morris Panych is Canada’s funniest
living playwright. Once again he manages to wrap keen
comedy around potent ideas. This play had its world
premiere last year in Washington. We are proud to be
the first company in Canada to welcome this play home.
Ridiculous fun. – DENNIS

THE CRUCIBLE
There’s an evil lurking within the devout community of
Salem, Massachusetts, and no one is beyond suspicion.
A farmer, his wife, and a dangerous young woman
are caught in a flash of hysteria that forces them all to
face the ultimate test. Based on the Salem witch trials,
Arthur Miller’s masterpiece remains one of the most
powerful and thrilling plays of our time.
“I DOUBT IF ANY MODERN
PLAY OFFERS MORE VISCERAL
EXCITEMENT THAN THIS ONE.”
national post
Never has this play felt more relevant. Accusations
are thrown, religion is defended, and the results are
hysteria and violence. I get chills just thinking about
this play and how we have learned so very little from
the past. Simply put, this is one of the best plays ever
written. – DENNIS

the musical
A pilot crashes his plane in the Sahara Desert, where he
meets a young prince from a distant asteroid who tells him
a story of life among the stars. The Little Prince is one of the
most universally cherished books of all time, selling
millions of copies worldwide. Now it comes to life in a
spectacular new musical celebration of the imagination
and the artist within us all.
“WORLD PREMIERE MUSICAL A
COUP FOR THEATRE CALGARY”
calgary sun
This musical is a huge explosion of wondrous sounds and
images. It’s unusual and totally enchanting. Watch as a
pilot and a little prince discover all sorts of fascinating
characters including a sultry singing rose, a dangerous
snake, and a wise fox. The composers have created a
nonstop singing, dancing, and dreaming musical that is
perfect for both adults and children. And Theatre Calgary
is presenting the world (and galaxy) premiere! – DENNIS

Bad Jews
by Joshua Harmon
Directed by Valerie Planche
When three young Jewish cousins are forced to bunk together
in an apartment after the death of their grandfather, the result
is a wickedly funny and ferocious brawl over religious tradition
and family legacy. One of the hottest plays in recent years will
have audiences laughing and talking long after the play is over.
“THE BEST COMEDY OF THE SEASON.”
the new york times
The first time I read this play, I started out laughing in fits of
giggles. Then I gasped in shock at some of the ideas. And in the
end, I cried. This is one of the most honest perspectives you will
get about being Jewish today. And in fact, this grieving family
could be any family anywhere. Vital viewing. – DENNIS

THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA
It’s Italy, 1953. Margaret Johnson and her daughter Clara
are touring the sundrenched squares of Florence when a
gust of wind carries Clara’s hat to the feet of a handsome
Tuscan man. As this twist of fate blossoms into love,
Margaret must decide whether to share a secret that may
destroy her daughter’s happiness. A winner of six Tony
Awards, this modern musical will take your breath away.
“THE MOST INTENSELY ROMANTIC
SCORE OF ANY MUSICAL SINCE
WEST SIDE STORY.” the new york times
A gorgeous score and a boy-meets-girl story set in the
piazzas of Florence and Rome? I’m in. We are presenting
this in time for Mother’s Day because at the very heart of
the piece is a graceful mother who does all that she can
for her precious child. Bring Mom along to thank her for
guiding you along the way. Uplifting. – DENNIS

“THEATRE CALGARY STAGES THE
BEST OF ALL POSSIBLE VERSIONS
OF A CHRISTMAS CAROL.” calgary sun
This production is spectacle on a grand scale. We have
filled the stage with warmth and cheer as we sing carols
and skate along the Thames River. A charming mixture
of ghosts will guide Ebenezer Scrooge through his past,
present, and future. Thoughtful, wondrous, and inspiring
– just what the holiday season should be. – DENNIS
