On Deck for the Knights Sunday will be the important rubber match between UCF and Memphis, with first pitch slated to take place at noon at Jay Bergman Field. Sophomore lefty Carmine Giardina (2-1, 8.24) will battle junior righty Will Hudgens (1-3, 4.96) to determine who will take the series. Upcoming Opponent Memphis is 4-7 in league play and 13-20 overall following Saturday’s extra-inning win. The Tigers were victims of nine in a row before defeating Mississippi State in 10 innings April 8, but four of those losses were against ranked teams including three to Rice. Memphis has racked up 24 hits in the series vs. UCF this weekend, including five by Brett Bowen and Robby Graham. The Series The Tigers have dominated the series with UCF and hold a 7-2 lead after the two teams split games one and two this weekend. Memphis outscored the Knights 41-11 at Jay Bergman Field in a three-game sweep in 2006. UCF then defeated Memphis in game one last year in Tennessee before losing three-straight, including a 12-6 decision in an elimination game in the C-USA Championship. UCF vs. Memphis Game One Recap Four first-inning runs enabled UCF to cruise to a 10-6 win over Memphis April 11. All nine starters had a hit or a run 2008 UCF Baseball Game Notes scored, as the Knights tied a season-high with 17 hits in the victory. Eric Kallstrom and Evan Stobbs paced the offense with four hits apiece, while Kyle Sweat picked up the win by going 5.1 innings with five strikeouts. UCF vs. Memphis Game Two Recap Memphis jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the top of the second, but the Knights kept chipping away. Trailing 7-5 in the ninth, Robert Lara tied it up with a one-out two-run single into left to send it to extras. But the Tigers plated the eventual winning run in the 11th to capture an 8-7 win. UCF had plenty of scoring chances throughout the game, however it had a hard time delivering as it left 16 runners on base, and hit into crucial double plays in the ninth and 11th innings. Situational Hitting While strong pitching typically provides UCF with victories, the offense also needs to perform in the clutch. In 25 wins this year, the Knights hit .340 with runners in scoring position, .347 with runners on base and held a 69.9 percentage when getting the RBI with a runner at third and less than two outs. During the stretch, the junior has batted .392 (20-for-51) with five doubles, a homer and seven RBI. Earlier this year, Kallstrom recorded a 14-game hitting streak. A Look at UCF’s Victories So far in 2008, UCF has played and defeated seven different teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament a year ago: Missouri 1-0, Monmouth 3-0, Stetson 2-0, Jacksonville 1-1, Southern Miss 1-2, East Carolina 1-2 and Memphis 1-1. Eric and Evan Equals Eight Hits Eric Kallstrom and Evan Stobbs both set career-highs against Memphis April 11. The duo each notched four hits in the win, while Kallstrom scored three runs and Stobbs amassed three RBI. Combined, they racked up eight of UCF’s 17 hits on the night. Completely Herold After last year witnessed no UCF starter toss a complete game, Mitch Herold broke that trend April 9 vs. Stetson.The junior southpaw hurled a three-hitter to defeat the Hatters, 4-1, matching a career-high with nine strikeouts while walking only one. He also set a personal best with his 9.0-inning performance, as his previous career-long outing was 7.0 innings. Herold finished his victory with just 101 pitches. No. 200 Senior Tyson Auer became just the 15th player in UCF history to record 200 hits in a Black and Gold uniform when he posted a single against Stetson April 9. The center fielder now needs just 12 hits to crack the top 10. Timpner Takes a Trip - To the Majors Former UCF Knight Clay Timpner (2002-04) got the call he has been waiting for since being drafted by San Francisco in the 2004 MLB Draft. The outfielder was called up from Triple-A to the Giants on April 8, and proceeded to board a plane and head to California to suit up with the major league club as it prepared to battle the Padres that night. After nine innings went by and the score knotted at 2-2, Timpner was sent in to left field as a defensive replacement, and even though he struck out in his first MLB plate appearance, the Giants won 3-2 in the bottom of the 11th. Timpner previously spent four years in the minors, including all of last season with the Triple-A Fresno Grizzlies. Allen Wrangles the Bulls Nerves could have gotten the better of freshman Cody Allen as he went out for his first collegiate start vs. USF April 8. But instead he put on a show, tossing 8.0 innings with six strikeouts, no walks and just three runs against him to pick up the victory. The righty scattered six hits on 110 pitches en route to becoming just the second Knight this year to last at least 8.0 innings in a start. Granny Time It can always be a bold move when coaches insert a new stick into the cleanup spot in the batting order. Following two singles and a walk to start the first inning, Lara hammered the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall for his second grand slam of the year. The home run provided UCF with the 4-0 lead and the Knights had no trouble holding onto the lead in the 6-3 win. they may feel really good about themselves. However many times their winning attitude turns into frustration as Houck has racked up six pickoffs this season with his dynamic move to first base. The lefty has 15 for his career, including two in 2007 before he earned a medical redshirt. Lara became the first UCF Knight since 2005 to hit at least two grand slams in the same season (Dee Brown had three). Fans Taking Notice A total of 3,709 fans flocked to Jay Bergman Field for the East Carolina series, which ranked as the third-largest attended series in stadium history. The crowd of 1,490 for game two stands as the 11th largest at The Berg. Laying Them Down Going through a period where it had just two sacrifice bunts in its previous nine games, UCF was going to make sure that would change against USF April 8. However, the results were even better than it planned. The Knights laid down five bunts, four of which were singles and another a sac bunt by Dwayne Bailey. Ryan Richardson had two of those bunt singles as UCF’s use of the small ball paid off in a 6-3 win. Stobbs Clobbers In just his third UCF start and first at first base, freshman Evan Stobbs crushed Houston pitching April 6. He opened up his afternoon with a sacrifice fly to deep center in the second inning, ripped a single off the pitcher and scored a run in the fourth, drilled a two-run homer in the fifth and lined a single through the left side in the seventh. Stobbs completed his start 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored, while his home run was the first of his college career. Lara’s Likes the Lone Star Robert Lara brought more than just his catching gear to Houston April 4-6, he added an impressive stick. The junior went 6-for-10 (including a start at DH in the series finale) with a run scored and an RBI vs. the Cougars. Giving Himself Up Senior Dwayne Bailey may only be in his second year with the Knights, but has laid down 17 career sacrifice bunts, including six this season. Those 17 sac hits rank seventh on the UCF all-time chart. From 2002-07, Jay Bergman Field’s record of 2,170 set on opening day in 2001 was never broken. However, a standing-room only crowd of 2,397 witnessed the Knights clash with the Bulls April 1 to break the old attendance record by 227. It was just the second time more than 2,000 fans took in a ballgame at UCF. A Glimpse into the Future UCF’s 2009 recruiting class was ranked at No. 7 in the country by Perfect Game, the highest ranking under recruiting coordinator Craig Cozart. The position also was the highest of any C-USA program. The Knights signed 14 players for next season and all of them hail from the state of Florida. Sitting Them Down the Easy Way UCF pitchers have racked up 380 strikeouts this season, led by Mitch Houck’s 56 Ks. In all, 13 different Knights have double-digit strikeout totals, as the staff is averaging 10.24 strikeouts per nine innings. A Look Ahead This week marks the end of UCF playing five games a week, as the Knights will have just one midweek game after the Memphis series. Bergman, a consistent winner throughout his decorated coaching career, has turned UCF into one of the 30 winningest programs in the NCAA in the 2000s. The dean of all UCF coaches, Bergman has the most wins of any coach at UCF, as he leads the Black and Gold for his 26th season in 2008. Under Bergman, UCF has qualified for nine NCAA Regional berths and won six Atlantic Sun titles (the most of any coach or conference team) before joining Conference USA in 2006. The skipper was named the 1995 Atlantic Region Coach of the Year, while also being selected as a two-time Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year (2001, 2002). In 2001 Bergman received the greatest gift of all for all his hard work and dedication, a brand new state-of-the-art facility which bears his name. In 2001, UCF dominated its opponents at the new ballpark going 30-7, including a 19-1 start, with a .331 batting average and a 2.95 ERA inside the friendly confines of Jay Bergman Field. Bergman began his coaching career with a seven-year stint at Seminole Community College in nearby Sanford, where his teams posted an overall record of 180-79 (.695). Beginning in 1968, Bergman’s teams qualified for six consecutive state tournaments and he was a three-time Division II coach of the year. He departed SCC after the 1973 season for a three-year assistant coaching stint at Florida before taking the head coaching reigns in 1976. The University of Florida can thank Jay Bergman for its baseball program’s success, as he brought the Gators into the national spotlight with their first ever NCAA Regional appearance during his tenure at UF. Bergman left Florida with the highest winning percentage in school history (216-113, .657). In his first 13 years of coaching, 57 of his former players went on to the professional ranks (21 SCC, 36 Florida). Over Bergman’s 38-year head coaching career, many of his former players have earned national, regional and conference honors for academic and athletic excellence. More than 100 of Bergman’s former players have signed professional contracts and 10 of those players, including five first-round selections, have played in the major leagues. Fourteen UCF players had been recognized as All-Americans in one form or another. In 2004, Matt Fox, Kyle Bono, Taylor Meier and Clay Timpner all collected All-America honors. Bergman’s players are recognized off the field as well. In 2007, 16 Knights earned a spot on C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll, which included Nick Choto receiving the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal for having a GPA of 3.75 or higher. That came after a 2006 campaign in which 14 student-athletes received honor-roll accolades. In 2002, 13 players were named to the A-Sun All-Academic Team. In 2001, Chad Ehrnsberger became the first athlete in UCF sports history to earn first-team Academic All-American status. Ehrnsberger and Bill Oakley were also regionally recognized. In 1998, Matt Lubozynski was a second team Academic All-American. Bergman received his master’s of science degree in sociology from Appalachian State in 1966 and his undergraduate degree in history/government from Rollins College in 1963. A member of the Rollins College, UCF, Winter Park High School and Richmond County (Va.) Baseball Coaches Halls of Fame, Bergman is a popular clinician at various camps and events around the country and has also participated in the NCAA Youth Education through Sports baseball clinic at the College World Series in Omaha. Bergman has a wife Sherry, and four children, Jay, Jr., Catherine, Michael and Tiffany.
