4 MESSAGE FROM THE ORGANISERS
The IABSE 2012 Conference entitled: “Global Thinking in Structural Engineering: Recent
Achievements” is organised by the International Association for Bridge and Structural
Engineering (IABSE) in collaboration with the Egyptian Group of IABSE and the Egyptian
Society of Engineers.
This conference is the first of its kind to tackle such a global theme in presenting the
recent achievements in structural engineering. In the last decades, different science
disciplines have widely intersected and came together. Nevertheless, structural
engineering has become one of the most important disciplines in several multi-disciplinary
applications in the industrial world. Structural engineering has applications, not only in the
construction and infrastructure industries, but also in the so-called “Multi-Disciplinary
Industries (MDI)”. The role of structural engineering in the automobile and aviation
industries is indispensable, where structural safety, aerodynamic behavior in service as
well as the comfort of the passengers is essential aspect. This can only be done in
harmonic collaboration with other disciplines, e.g. mechanical and electrical engineering,
computer science, communication and global positioning systems.
The conference aims to introduce the recent outcomes in research and practice for multidisciplinary technological applications and also presentations on the timely themes:
Sustainable Development and Structural Engineering; Structural Engineering and
Renewable Energy Sources; Smart Structures, New Materials and Construction Techniques.
The Conference has attracted over 120 delegates from around 30 countries, covering a
diverse range of organisations, academicians and construction industry professionals.
Attendees include researchers, designers, consultants, owners, contractors, operators,
suppliers and representatives of regulatory authorities.
The call for papers resulted in more than 140 papers received. The activity of the
Scientific Committee resulted in 93 papers selected for oral presentation.
Seven keynote presentations will be provided by eminent engineers spread over the three
day conference each tackling the different themes entailed. During the conference, the
presentations will be arranged in plenary sessions and 2-3 parallel sessions.
Special acknowledgements are owed to the members of the Organising and Scientific
Committees for the great effort put into the organisation of the Conference.
We are confident that the Sharm El Sheikh Conference will be an important scientific event
and will have a strong impact in the field of structural engineering. Both the Scientific and
Organising Committees would like to take this opportunity to thank all guests for their
participation and we will do everything possible to make this a successful and
unforgettable event.

5 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF IABSE
The Egyptian Group of IABSE and the Egyptian Society of Engineers (ESE) have organised
many international conferences together over the years such as, a series of conferences on
‘Structural and Geotechnical Engineering (Last 2009)’, the ‘Middle East Conference on
Structural Composite’ (last 2008) and the IABSE Workshop on Durability (2003). The
Bridge Conference ‘Past Achievements, Current Trends, Future Technologies’ was cosponsored by IABSE in 2000, at the time many large bridge projects had recently been
completed in Egypt, and several remarkable bridge projects were under construction: the
Suez Canal Bridge and El Ferdan Railway Swing Bridge over Suez Canal, and El-Mouneeb,
El-Warrak, and Aswan bridges over the River Nile.
Twelve years later it is with great appreciation that we receive the invitation from the
Egyptian Group of IABSE and the Egyptian Society of Engineers (ESE), both chaired by
Prof. Abdel-Hady Hosny to attend the IABSE Sharm El Sheikh Conference “Global Thinking
in Structural Engineering: Recent Achievements”.
A highly interesting Technical Programme has been prepared by the Scientific Committee
chaired by Fathy Saad, Egypt and co-chaired by past President of IABSE Jacques
Combault, France. I am looking forward to discuss with structural engineers and
associated professionals, the recent outcomes in research and practice for multidisciplinary technological applications, and hear presentations on the timely themes:
Sustainable Development and Structural Engineering; Structural Engineering and
Renewable Energy Sources; Smart Structures, New Materials and Construction Techniques.
There will be opportunity to share views too on technical visits, for example to the AlKuraymat Egypt a new solar power plant recently realised. It uses a solar parabolic trough
system, which depends on a special structural engineering design that combines high
precision in the steel fabrication and erection, accurate measurement and surveying
technologies and error correction possibilities during assembly.
A Social Programme with a Gala Dinner and tours has been prepared by the organisers.
The Venue, needless to say, will spoil us with opportunities of recreation, being a
spectacular diving site in Sharm El Sheikh, offering historical sites close by and world
heritage monuments within a day tours reach.
I wish to thank all members of the Scientific Committee for their hard work reading and
evaluating the abstracts and the papers. Many thanks go to the Organising Committee for
the preparation of the activities of the conference.

6 GENERAL INFORMATION
Conference Venue and Accommodation
Sharm El-Sheikh is a city situated on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, in South Sinai
Governorate, on the coastal strip along the Red Sea. Its population is approximately
35,000. Sharm El Sheikh is the administrative hub of Egypt's South Sinai Governorate
which includes the smaller coastal towns of Dahab and Nuweiba as well as the
mountainous interior, Saint Catherine's Monastery and Mount Sinai. Sharm El Sheikh is
sometimes called the "City of Peace", referring to the large number of international peace
conferences that have been held there. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in
the Arab world. It is known to be a city with the finest diving spots in the world and a trip
into the desert is an unforgettable adventure. The Sinai Peninsula is a remote desert
mountain range. The rocky mountains are parted from the deep-blue sea by a flat desert
strip.
The Hyatt Regency Sharm El Sheikh Resort will serve as the Conference Venue. It is a
popular destination for water sports and diving vacations. The Hotel will be providing
conference delegates with accommodation overlooking a spectacular view of the Red Sea
and with amazing Southern Mediterranean décor. The hotel provides a wide range of
services guaranteed to satisfy the needs of the most discerning guests.
Transport Airport-Hotel
There will be hotel shuttle service available at Sharm El Sheikh Airport to transfer
participants to the Hyatt Regency Sharm El Sheikh Resort. This service is arranged for
through the official travel agency listed on the website. The prices for a one way transfer
are:

Domestic flights – free of charge
International flights: 1 person $16.00; 2 – 3 persons $5.00 each
For those guests that arrive without requesting a transfer, the cost of a local taxi from the
airport to the hotel ranges between $12.00 - $15:00.

There will be internet access available for participants in the conference area at a special
conference rate. Please ask at the Registration and Information Desk .

The Registration and Information Desk, located in the conference area at the Hyatt
Regency Sharm El Sheikh Resort will be open on the day before and throughout the
conference. Attendees will also be able to register for technical and social tours, and social
events. Our staff at the registration desk will be pleased to assist you will all your
enquiries.
Presentation Desk
All authors are requested to submit their presentation at the “Presentation Assistance
Desk” during registration. This desk is located in the Grand Ballroom Foyer in the
registration area.

The name badges will be given to all delegates and their accompanying persons with their
delegate bags. It is required that all delegates wear their badges at all times also at social

22 TECHNICAL VISITS
The Conference will entail two technical visits:
Technical Visit 1: Al-Kuraymat Solar Power Plants (Saturday, May 5, 2012)
This is a full day visit to the solar power plant in Al-Kuraymat,
about 100km to the south of Cairo. An expert will guide the
participant through the technical background of this technology, as
well as through the different parts of the solar field on site. The
tour includes transport and lunch. The bus will depart from in front
of the ESE premises (Ramses Street, Cairo) at 08:00 hrs. The bus
will return to the same meeting point at 17:00 hrs.
Visit extra fee: USD 20 (this includes transfer, lunch box, water
and soft drink)
Technical Visit 2: El Ferdan Railway Bridge (Wednesday, May 9, 2012)
El Ferdan Railway Bridge is a swing bridge that spans the Suez Canal near Ismailia, Egypt.
It is the longest swing bridge in the world, with a span of 1100 ft (340 m). It runs from the
east of Suez Canal to the west into Sinai, and opens most of the
time to allow sailing ships to pass in the canal, and closes during
passage of trains. The bus will depart from in front of the Hyatt
Regency Hotel at 12:00 noon. It is approximately a 3 our driver.
The visit will last for 2 hours from 15:00 – 17:00 hrs. The bus will
transfer delegates directly to Cairo. Accommodation in Cairo may
be arranged for interested delegates.
Visit extra fee: USD 20 (this includes transfer, lunch box, water and soft drink)
SOCIAL PROGRAMME
A social programme will be arranged during the three day conference for all delegates and
accompanying persons. For those that have not reserved for any of the below and would
like to do so please meet with a representative from the official conference travel agency
available in the registration area.
Welcome Reception
All participants and accompanying persons are invited to attend the Welcome Reception
which will take place in the Banquet Courtyard at the Hyatt Regency Sharm El Sheikh
Resort on Sunday, May 6 from 19:30 – 21:00.
Conference Gala Dinner
The Gala Dinner will be held for all interested participants and their accompanying
persons. This will take in the Beach House Restaurant at the Hyatt Regency Sharm El
Sheikh Resort on Monday, May 7 from 20:00 – 22:00. Please make sure that you have
your dinner voucher with you that you will be given during registration or while reserving
on site.
23 Cultural Visits
1. Cairo Pre & Post Conference Tours: Egyptian Museum– Pyramids and Sphinx
- Salah El Din Citadel & Mohamed Ali Mosque
This is an amazing way to get to know the breathtaking sites of Cairo in one day. The day
begins with a two hour visit to the Egyptian Museum where the main sections of this
unique and remarkable venue are covered. This is then followed by an hour and a half
visit to the magnificent Salah El Din Citadel & Mohamed Ali Mosque of the 12th Century.
Guests then get to relax and enjoy the Egyptian oriental cuisine at a 4 star restaurant.
The day continues
with a 3 hour visit to one of the seven ancient wonders of the world, the Pyramids of Giza,
followed by the Sphinx, the inscrutable guardian lion of the plateau.


Guests are picked up from the

Upon completion of the day, guests
are either taken back to the airport
to take the evening domestic flight
to Sharm El Sheikh or they can
spend the night in Cairo and be
transferred on May 6 in the
morning to the airport.

respect to late arrivals on May 5th,
a part of the program can be
covered on the same day and after
a one night’s stay in Cairo, the rest
of the tour can be completed on
May 6. Guests are then taken to
the airport for their Sharm El
Sheikh connection.

Sheikh on May 9 and spend one night in Cairo. On May 10 guests are picked up and
taken to the Egyptian Museum to begin the tour. Upon completion of the day,
depending on the guests’ international flights, they are either taken to the airport or
spend the night in Cairo and transferred on May 11 to the airport.

24 2. Safari Trip in Sinai
Start at 17:30 on May 7
Combine both adventure and culture with Bedouin people using the awesome desert
sunset as your backdrop. Desert Safari adventure in Sharm El Sheikh, start with Sunset
Quad bikes ride then move to a Bedouin tent for dinner and soft drinks and enjoy a
Bedouin Folkloric Show.

3. Other Tours
Various other pre- and post-conference tours to different areas in Egypt are available for
booking.
For those interested please meet with a representative from the official
conference travel agency available in the registration area.

25 THE EXHIBITION
The Exhibition will be available throughout the duration of the Conference from 09:00 on
Monday May, 6 to 15:00 on Wednesday May, 9.
Three companies will be participating in the Conference Exhibition: OVM, Maurer Söhne
and Reisner & Wolff Engineering. The Exhibition will be located in the Grand Ballroom
Conference Foyer.
