KEEP IT LOCAL - support your local businesses
your monthly indispensible guide to services in your neighbourhood
WELCOME
Happy Christmas! We know for many
of you it’s too early to hear that, but
December is here and the Christmas
season is truly upon us. If you haven’t
yet started Christmas shopping, take
a look at our Christmas gift guide on
pages 32 and 33 for some good ideas
from local businesses. For those of
you thinking of a puppy or kitten our
article from Wingrave Vets on page 12
is a must read!
If you’re contemplating bringing in
the New Year with a New start, have
a read of info on the Global Housing
Market. A special mention must go to
our local charity, St Raphael’s Hospice
as they do such a wonderful job for
people in their darkest hours. Please
support them by making a donation,
or visiting the Lower Morden Lane
Christmas lights, they really are a
sight to behold and such a wonderful
community spirit is hard to find these
days.
A big thank you once again for
all your support, ‘keep it local’
and remember to mention ‘Your
Neighbourhood Directory’ when
responding to our advertisers.

Dear Residents of Cheam and Belmont,
Christmas is a time of festive cheer and
goodwill – but make sure you don’t
unwittingly extend the sentiments of the
season to opportunist criminals.
This is because thieves and burglars will
be looking to line their pockets at your
expense because you may be concentrating
more on the party season than on being
security conscious.
The advice from the Crime Prevention
team at Sutton Police Station is to be aware
of the extra cash you are carrying with you
in your purse or wallet. Also be aware of
the many gifts – some of them likely to
be quite expensive – that you are likely to
have in your home.
PC Pat Simcox, of Sutton’s Crime
Prevention Team, said: “We want everyone
to enjoy a happy Christmas and prosperous
New Year. However, this is a busy time of
year for pickpockets and burglars too and
we suggest that you take a few simple steps
to be more secure and safe.”
Crime prevention tips include:
Keep your purse in a bag with a zip –
and have the strap over your shoulder
and the bag in front of you
Keep your wallet deep in an inside
pocket close to your body
If you travel by car, make sure you
park in a well-lit area. Lock all doors
and windows and do not leave presents
on view
Avoid leaving purchases in the boot
before continuing with your shopping
as thieves may well watch car parks
When you have brought your presents
home, keep your gifts out of sight until
late on Christmas Eve
If you store larger items such as
bicycles in the shed or outbuildings,
make sure they are locked away
securely
Take the frame numbers of new
bicycles – and electrical goods for
future reference
Check your home insurance to make
sure you are covered for your extra
items
Remember, empty boxes left outside
after Christmas only serve to advertise
that you have new goods inside. So
dispose of packing carefully.
For further crime prevention advice visit:
http://www.met.police.uk/crimeprevention/
index.htm
Only withdraw the cash you need –
avoid carrying too much
istock
Avoid carrying too many bags at the
same time because you are less likely
to notice one going missing until you
get home. So make more, smaller trips

Caring for a
puppy or kitten
A
a kitten.
s the festive and holiday season
fast approaches many of you may
be considering buying a puppy or
Here are some things to consider:
Caring for a puppy or a kitten requires
much patience and understanding, but the
rewards are great. They are endearing to
everyone but they grow up all too fast.
Always ask to see a puppy or a kitten
with its mother and preferably in a home
environment. If you have children you
should ideally choose one brought up in a
household with children.
Before you first bring a new animal into
your home you will need to research your
pet to ensure that you can meet all its needs
and that you have all the equipment needed
to care for your pet. Food and water bowls,
food, a warm bed, a collar with name
and address tag, litter trays and grooming
equipment are all essential. Toys are also a
good idea.
Daily grooming will help keep your pet
in top condition. Starting this as soon as
possible will get them used to the idea of
being groomed and they will soon come to
look forward to the attention.
Dental disease is common in dogs and
this can be avoided, just as in humans, by
daily tooth brushing. If you start a routine
of tooth brushing as soon as you get your
puppy it will be much easier to continue
throughout his later years. Special brushes
and doggy toothpastes are available. Do not
use human toothpaste as this will foam up
in your puppy’s mouth and he will not like
the taste.
Fortunately most pets remain healthy
provided they are well cared for and
receive preventative health treatments
such as vaccinations and flea and worm
treatments. Register your animal with a
vet as soon as possible and ask for a health
check. A good vet will be happy to give
you advice on routine health care and
neutering before problems develop.
Christmas Chocolate Treats??
Most dogs love chocolate but as well
as being very fattening, it also contains
a substance called theobromine which
is poisonous to dogs (thankfully not to
humans!). The theobromine content and
hence the toxicity of the chocolate varies
according to the type of chocolate with
plain chocolate the most dangerous. So
if you MUST feed your dog a Christmas
chocolate treat, specially formulated pet
chocolate is the safest option.

Cheam Leaded Lights
Restoring Colour to your Home
Do you have an original stained glass
window in your home you want to
retain which has deteriorated?
Cheam Leaded Lights is a long
established local business based in
Cheam Village. They can combine
the beautiful elegance of traditional
leaded windows with the modern
efficiency of double glazing by
housing the leaded light within a
triple glazed unit.
Triple Glazing
If your window requires repair they
can offer their extensive knowledge
and skills to restore your window
to its former glory (repairing and
replacing if necessary glass, leadwork
and thoroughly cleaning each panel).
Stained glass can be restored or they
can customise a new piece of stained
glass to be encapsulated within a
sealed unit which then becomes
triple glazed. A new more efficient
window is created within a new frame.
This provides an affordable way of
retaining or creating a real feature in
your home.
Other advantages include:
ʟʟ keeping the stained glass clean
ʟʟ improving sound and heat (reducing energy bills)
ʟʟ increasing security for your home
Give them a call or pop into the
workshop to meet the friendly team
and view examples of their work.

A question; can other economies and housing markets
really effect what happens in suburban Surrey?
Welcome to the world of Globalisation!
Whether we like it or not we all now
live in a smaller and more controlled
world. Large corporates and world
governments are now closer than ever,
desperately relying on each other to
continue growth in the economies
around the world.
government haven’t yet met their
lending criteria). A simple example
provided by Kevin Hurley of the
Mortgage Advice Bureau shows the
immense difference of interest rates
offered when you have a lower loan to
value ratio and shows the credit crunch
in real terms.
The American housing market fiasco;
it was partly our banks speculating
and buying these sub prime housing
loans to make a quick return, banking
solely on a rising housing market.
When the American market faltered
and the wider economy struggled those
who couldn’t afford their mortgages
and then couldn’t sell simply handed
the keys back leaving our banks with
massive short comings. The banks
simply wouldn’t and couldn’t release
any money because they didn’t know
their own liabilities.
With a purchase price of £400k and
a repayment term of 25 years; 90%
mortgage, therefore borrowing 360k
with a 5 year Fixed Rate would deliver
an interest rate of 7.19% = Monthly
payment £2588 approx against a lower
loan to value; 80% mortgage, therefore
borrowing 320k with a 2 year Fixed
Rate would deliver an interest rate of
5.88% = Monthly payment 2038 approx.
Welcome to the credit crunch. In Hong
Kong the housing market is seeing a
revival with some record asking prices
for luxury apartments, but there is a
possible worry that low interest rates,
high liquidity and a tight supply of
new apartments could fuel irrational
exuberance. The only difference to our
market is the high liquidity; our banks
are still extremely wary of lending
money (although this could change as
some
of the
British
banks
bailed

by our
Property in the recent foreign
investment hotspots such as the United
Arab Emirates and Spain have reduced
in value, this must have negatively
affected those who have property
in these regions. Possibly tying their
capitol up and reducing investment
in this country? Interestingly Australia
raised their interest rates in October
by a quarter of a percent. Could ours
follow suit? Remember when other
countries economies sneeze we could
catch a cold!
If you have any questions regarding
the housing market you would like
answered then feel free to write to info@
yourneighbourhooddirectory.com and we’ll
do our best to answer them. If you would
like a more specific insight into the property
market because your thinking of selling then

Turkey Leftovers Turkey Burgers Thai Style
500g ground leftover turkey meat
130g grated carrots
bunch of coriander chopped
1.5 tbsps thai curry paste
1 large egg white
4 spring onions chopped finely
tbsp of oil
crusty rolls or french stick
salad (leaves, tomatoes, avocado,
cucumber, red onions)
Mix the ground leftover turkey with
the grated carrot, coriander, thai
curry paste and onions. Add the
egg white and mix well. Shape the
mixture into burgers. Put on a plate,
cover with cling film and refridgerate
for 25 mins. Heat the oil in a large
skillet and cook the burgers for 6-7
mins on each side until golden brown
and cooked right through. Serve in
crusty rolls or french bread with salad
and chutney.
2 bottles full-bodied red wine
1 orange pierced with cloves
2 sliced oranges
1 lemon sliced
6 level tablespoons sugar or honey
1 cinnamon stick
2 teaspoons grated fresh root
ginger
2 tablespoons grand marnier or
cherry brandy
Pour the wine into a large
saucepan and place on low
heat. Add the remainder of the
ingredients and stir. Let simmer,
but don’t let the wine boil. When
wine begins to steam, remove
from heat. Pour the wine into
mugs or glasses removing solid
ingredients.
500 g brussels sprouts, trimmed
Quarter cup dry red wine
3 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon cornflour
Cut an X into the base of each
Brussels sprout, about 1/4 inch
deep. In a small bowl, combine
the wine, honey, and soy sauce
and stir together. Transfer to
a large saucepan along with
1/2 cup water and the Brussels
sprouts. Stir together, then cook,
covered, at a gentle simmer for
15 minutes. Stir occasionally.
Uncover and cook, stirring
occasionally, for another 10
minutes. Dissolve the cornflour in
a small amount of water. Stir into
the saucepan quickly, then cook
for another 5 minutes. Remove
from heat and transfer to a
covered casserole dish to serve.
Break the bread into pieces and
blend in a process or liquidiser
until it makes fine breadcrumbs.
If you’re using fresh sage, then
place the sage in with the bread
at the time of blending. Put
the breadcrumb mixture into a
generous sized bowl. If using
dried sage then add it now and
mix in well. Add the onion and
mix again followed by the egg
which mix until well combined.
Divide the stuffing mixture into
around 25 balls, rolling each ball
with wet hands.
Place the stuffing balls around
the roast and cook for about 45
minutes basting as you baste
the roast. Serve with all the
trimmings!

5 ways to enjoy Christmas
without putting on a stone
We eat a whopping 7,000 calories on
Christmas Day. And it's not just the day
itself - thanks to parties, drinks with
neighbours, friends and family, caloriecramming Christmas extends from early
December right through to January.
If you've struggled for months to be able to
fit into your little black dress, the last thing
you want is to undo that.
Shops may only be closed for a couple of
days, but we still succumb to the idea of
stocking up. Shelves are laden with snacks
and endless offers encourage you to fill
up, while at home - especially when you're
playing the generous host to visitors - every
time you open your kitchen cupboards,
you're taunted with 'treat' food.
Party tricks...
Ensure you drink two or three glasses of
water so you're hydrated before you go
to a party. If you arrive thirsty, and you're
offered a glass of wine, you're going to
down it far more quickly. Your resolve will
slip and before you know it you'll be on the
party food. Eat before you arrive. If you're
going straight from work make sure you
have a proper lunch.
Stress and stuffing...
Accept that Christmas is a stressful time,
try to delegate and not make everybody
else's happiness your responsibility. Take
time out for yourself and take a long soak
in the bath or go for an invigorating walk.'
But it doesn't have to be like that:
Don't be a party pooper...
Christmas comes once a year so relax and enjoy it...
Keep focused on why you're trying to lose
weight. Visualise yourself fit and achieving
your dream. Imagine yourself confident and
wearing the dress of your dreams.'
Any point refusing yourself a mince pie,
then feeling miserable? Abide by the
80/20 per cent rule - 20 per cent isn't worth
beating yourself up about, as long as you're
eating healthily 80 per cent of the time.
It's far better to indulge in a mince pie,
and stop, than think, "I've messed up - I
might as well really overeat now" and keep
gorging.'
December 2009
Have a little of what you love...
Rather than just scoffing the buffet or
dipping into chocolates every five minutes
while watching the Christmas film, choose
a treat you enjoy and eat it slowly, so your
taste buds have a proper treat.'

how to look after your
christmas tree
Looking after
Christmas
Trees - or
at least the
ones without
roots on - is
a little bit
like looking
after cutflowers.
If you don't provide
them with water, then they will wilt.
In the case of the Christmas Tree, this
usually takes the form of Needle Drop!
istock
Most people will know about crushing
the cut stems of cut flowers to enable
them to take in water. In the case of the
Christmas Tree, crushing the stem is out of
the question, but we are all aware of the
sticky resin that can exude from conifer
stems. In the case of the Christmas tree,
this will harden at the cut off end making
it even more difficult for the tree to take
in moisture. So make sure that you cut off
around 50mm (2 inches) of the stem, to
give a new start to the tree and enable it to
take in moisture to see it through it's two or
three weeks of totally alien surroundings.
(Indoors, usually near a radiator, and draped
with Christmas Fairy lights that give off a
lot more heat than we realise). Just imagine
having a 'necklace' of those lights if you
have been used to cool living conditions.
The tree - like cut flowers - will need to
be placed in a container with it's stump
in water. There are many Christmas Tree
stands that do this job quite well. The other
option is to place the tree in a waterproof
34
bucket, and wedged in with old newspapers
and large stones to make sure that it is
secure. Make sure that the tree is NOT too
heavy at the top for the container!
Throughout the period indoors, make sure
that the tree is well watered, but DO TAKE
CARE if there are electric lights on the
tree - and also be careful not to splash the
plug socket - often near the tree - when
watering.
Looking after a real Christmas tree and
keeping it fresh and looking good isn't too
much work so long as you follow these
guidelines:
Prevent the tree from drying up and
keep it moist.
If you are not putting the tree up
straight away then try and keep the tree out
of the wind and direct sunlight. Put the tree
in a bucket of water.
When setting the tree up cut the stem
(about 2.5cm/1") before placing it into the
stand.
The stand should contain a reasonable
amount of water and should be topped up
regularly.
Try not to move the tree once you've
set it up.
Keep the tree away from radiators
and fires. This will stop the tree drying up
(causing the needles to fall) and will help
keep it looking as good as the day you
bought it!

public donations for approximately threequarters of the amount needed to run the
hospice.
Since 1987, St Raphael's has offered the
special skills of Hospice care to those
facing life-threatening illness living in
the boroughs of Merton and Sutton. The
service is completely free of charge, and
provides high quality medical and nursing
skills, as well as support to family and
friends. St Raphael’s fully recognises and
respects cultural, ethnic and religious
differences and patients of all faiths or
none, are welcome at St Raphael’s.
Medical, nursing and support staff do
everything possible to relieve pain and
sustain quality of life in an atmosphere of
peace and comfort. In each case, Hospice
care is tailored to the individuals needs.
St Raphael's Hospice relies heavily upon
voluntary contributions and depends upon
the generosity of the local community
to continue to be able to provide a high
quality of care.
December 2009
The Christmas Collections in Lower
Morden Lane will be taking place via
the residents there between 19th and
24th December, so why not come down
and enjoy the beautiful decorations and
support your local charity. Alternatively,
take a trip to Nonsuch Park on Saturday
December 12th and watch our sponsored
Santa dash. A sight to behold!
St Raphael’s Director of Fundraising, Keith
Witham said: “The Hospice very much
relies on donations of this type, as well
as the huge effort put in by volunteers.
Without such support, the hospice could
not continue its work. We are very much
a local charity that relies on support from
local people, for the hospice in turn to be
available to local people when they need
help”.

It costs more than £75,000 a week to keep
the Hospice running. More than 80% of
income is spent on direct patient care.
Although St Raphael’s receive a grant of
just 24% of the total cost from the Health
Authority, the remaining 76% must be
raised from donations and fundraising
activities.
This will be the 8th year that the Christmas
decoration of households in Lower Morden
Lane and collections in aid of St Raphael’s
Hospice have taken place . Last year
£11,500 was raised, and over the seven
