bers and loved ones. We
send the entire Tuttle family
our heartfelt condolences.
Faity’s extraordinary life, her many accomplishments, her adventurous
spirit, and her love of family and Kinderhook are well known and appreciated by so many in our community and beyond. As Jane Brody wrote in the
New York Times in 2010, “Mrs. Tuttle is an extrovert who has many friends,
a healthy dose of self-esteem and strong ties to family and community.”
For those of us working on the campaign to renovate and expand our
library, Faity’s strong sense of community spirit and her desire to give back
are values that we cherish and seek to emulate. We are grateful that she
was able to participate in campaign events and recall with great fondness
her speaking before a large gathering in the library reading room last year
to share her deep belief in the need to expand the building to meet community needs in the 21st Century.
In her message to donors, which can be found in our campaign bro-
-AnnaLee Giraldo, Director
chure, Faity discussed why she was motivated to participate. She mentioned how proud she was that the community had embraced the library
building, built by Caroline Davie Lloyd in memory of her father, George
Davie, by using the facility as “the vibrant educational and intellectual
heart of Kinderhook and Stuyvesant, open to all.” She also urged readers to “think about those who have been important to their lives” and to
contribute in their honor, as she did in memory of her husband, Ben, and
her daughter and former Kinderhook librarian, Missy.
Knowing of Faity’s love of the outdoors, gardening and her many years
of service to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, the campaign steering committee is planning to recognize Faity by dedicating an outdoor garden
space outside KML in her memory. Those interested in helping with this endeavor should feel free to contact the campaign office or AnnaLee Giraldo
at (518) 758-6192, or to get in touch with Marian Sole, campaign co-chair.

hile we tend to think of spring in terms of
new beginnings, fall is when the Friends
make a fresh start, electing officers, approving a budget for the coming year, and
renewing our commitment to membership.
We are excited to have developed a 2015-16 budget which reflects a
substantial increase in our commitment to the Library and includes
a leading sponsorship of the Library’s major fundraiser, OKtoberfest. In accordance with our Reserve Fund Policy, we have allocated
the balance of our available reserve funds to support the building
campaign. The budget and slate are posted at the Library, and voting will take place at our Annual Meeting on Friday, September 11,
during our Volunteer Recognition/Book Sale Preview Party from
5-7pm on the Library lawn. All are welcome to attend.
We are happy to take the opportunity to celebrate the many
volunteers who have supported Fiends’ efforts during the past year.
If you have helped out at our book sales, worked in our book shop,
W
staffed or baked for an event, we want to thank you and recognize
your contribution. We could never do it without you!
October 18-25 marks National Friends of Libraries Week, a
chance to draw attention to the many contributions that Friends
across the country make to their libraries. On display at the Kinderhook Memorial Library that week will be the New York State
Senate proclamation recognizing this event and honoring Friends
throughout the State who are so vital to their libraries and communities. We are proud to be among them.
When you receive your membership renewal letter in the mail, we
hope you will return it as soon as you can. And if you are not yet a
member, please consider joining. It’s a wonderful way to contribute
to the vitality of the Kinderhook/Stuyvesant community!
