NHMS2011 : PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Azahadi O, Lim KK, Teh CY, Ummi Nadiah Y, Hamizatul Akmal AH, Chan YY, Syafinaz MS, Noor Azah D • • • • • • • • Dr Noor Azah Daud Dr Mohd Azahadi Omar Lim Kuang Kuay Ummi Nadiah Yusoff Teh Chien Huey Hamizatul Akmal Abd Hamid Chan Ying Ying Syafinaz Mohd Sallehuddin • Physical activity is defined as ‘any movement contributing to human total energy expenditure’ (Caspersen & Stephens 1994) • Physical activity protects against ischaemic heart disease (Powel et al. 1987), several cancers (Colditz et al. 1997) , reduces the risk of diabetes (Hu et al. 1999), improves mental health (Dunn et al. 2001) and may reduce the risk of fall and injuries in elderly (Drinkwater 1994). • Globally, around 31% of adults aged 15 and over were insufficiently active in 2008 (men 28% and women 34%).
