• Physical activity is defined as ‘any movement
contributing to human total energy
expenditure’ (Caspersen & Stephens 1994)
• Physical activity protects against ischaemic
heart disease (Powel et al. 1987), several cancers (Colditz
et al. 1997) , reduces the risk of diabetes (Hu et al. 1999),
improves mental health (Dunn et al. 2001) and may
reduce the risk of fall and injuries in elderly
(Drinkwater 1994).
• Globally, around 31% of adults aged 15 and
over were insufficiently active in 2008 (men
28% and women 34%). (WHO, 2009)
• Approximately 3.2 million deaths each year are
attributable to insufficient physical activity.
• To determine the prevalence of physical
activity among Malaysian population aged 16
years and above
• A cross-sectional survey
• Two-stage stratified random sampling
method proportionate to population size
throughout all states in Malaysia
• Duration of data collection : April 2011 –
July 2011
• Target population : 16 years and above
• Face to face interview using short form
version of International Physical
Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ)
• The IPAQ short form asks about three
specific types of activity :
– vigorous-intensity activities
– moderate-intensity activities
– walking
• Based on “Guidelines for Data
Processing and Analysis of the
International Physical Activity
Questionnaire (IPAQ) – Short and Long
Forms”
Combination of walking, moderateintensity or vigorous intensity activities
achieving a minimum of at least 600
MET-min/week
