Water Sports
Surrounded by over 40
square miles of lakes and hundreds of miles of rivers and
streams of every depth and
size, Princeton is nestled on the
banks of the mighty Fox River
between Lake Puckaway and
Green Lake. The area is a water
lover’s paradise with abundant
opportunities to enjoy the sport
of your choice.
Boating
Canoeing and kayaking becomes a kiss with nature when
sliding along the Fox, Mecan, Grand, Rock and White Rivers.
Enjoy the richness of nature and its tranquil beauty as wildlife
graze along the tree-lined river’s edge.
View beautiful scenery as you cruise along cottage-dotted
shorelines, or drop anchor in the middle of Lake Puckaway
or Green Lake to take a break with an onboard picnic lunch
and refreshing dip. Unfurl sails and catch the wind for miles
of sparkling blue water. Pull your star skier or jump on the
wave runner to zip through the sparkling surf…your water fun
is what you make it.
Fishing
Whether wetting a line off a
bridge, from a boat shoreline, or
cutting a hole in the ice, fishing
is great. The Fox River, Green
Lake and Lake Puckaway are
managed for quality fishing,
and favorites include small
and large mouth bass, bluegill,
perch, white bass, northern,
walleye, cisco, musky, trout
and catfish.
Boat Launches &
Locks
Launch your boat into the
Fox River at Hiestand Park in
Princeton, just off Hwy. 23/73
on Mechanic Street, at the Princeton Locks on the Lock Road
about 1 mile west on Hwy 23,
or 3 miles east of Princeton on
county Rd. T.
Wildlife
Engage in an abundance of
nature and (if you’re in the right
place at the right time) get a close
encounter of the “wildlife kind”
that is uniquely enjoyed in Princeton and the surrounding area.
Water level, temperature, current, and the way the rocks grace
the river’s edge make the shores
of the Fox River behind the shopping district of downtown Princeton a very unique habitat. For a few days in early spring the ancient
species of Sturgeon roll on the rocks along the Fox River shoreline
spawning only inches from your feet. Be careful not to touch them,
though - they are protected.
In the 1940s the Whooping Crane was reduced to just 15 birds.
Operation Migration, along with the Whooping Crane Eastern
Partnership has played a lead role in the reintroduction of endangered Whooping Cranes into eastern North America since 2001
and they have now made their home in the White River Marsh
just outside of Princeton. Using ultra-light aircraft, Operation
Migration pilots act as surrogate parents guiding captive-hatched and
imprinted Whooping Cranes along a planned migration route beginning in the White River Marsh and ending in Florida. Through these
heroic efforts the Whooping Crane population has grown to about 600
worldwide. Onlookers can get an up-front and personal view of the
babies going through their flying lessons by making reservations with
photographer and trainer/caretaker Doug Pellerin at pelican0711@
gmail.com, or by parking their car along County Road D and Mile
Rd., about 4 miles north of Princeton just after sunrise, to watch the
class of 2015 learn to migrate with their ultra-light Yellow Mama.
For more information about how you can get involved or about the
Whooping Crane Festival on September 11-13, contact the Princeton
Chamber at [email protected].
Birding and wildlife exploration abound in the Grand River Marsh
State Wildlife Area to the south, the White River Marsh State Wildlife
Area to the north of Princeton, the Puchyan Wetlands north of Hwy.
23 on Cty CC and the Snake Creek Wetlands between Princeton and
Green Lake off St. Marie Road.
Swimming
Enjoy a cool dip and a picnic at 3
public swimming areas surrounding
Green Lake or 1 public area on
Puckaway. Various parks have a variety
of playground equipment, picnic
tables, shade trees and washrooms for
your convenience.
Pedal Princeton
BackRoads
Just park your car in the downtown
parking lot and head out to explore the
backroads on 8 planned tours offering
backroad biking experiences for all
types of riders. Take along a detailed
map available throughout town.
Green Lake
Conference Center
It’s always inspirational to include some of the most beautiful
scenery in Wisconsin when you bike, hike or cross country
ski through the Green Lake Conference Center’s Dawson
Prairie Trail, on the corner of Cty. Rd. T and Hwy. 23 east of
Princeton.
Black Bridge
Nature Trail
Incorporate the historic Black
Bridge Nature Trail (running
from North Farmer St. to River
Rd.) as you stroll through Princeton city streets. Treat yourself to
the seclusion of the old railroad
bed rising above lowland habitats and the beautifully preserved
Northwestern Railway Bridge as
your view opens to the breathtaking scenery of the Fox River
that it spans over.
Greenways
Take in the scenic beauty of Green Lake County’s Mascoutin
Valley Trail stretching 12 miles along the old Milwaukee train
track bed stretching between Berlin and Ripon.
Snake Creek
Wetlands Trail
View nature in all its richness as you walk an abandoned
railroad in the Izaak Walton Leaque of America’s Snake Creek
Wetlands. Access the trail on Saint Marie Rd. or Swamp Rd.
between Princeton and Green Lake on Cty. Rd. J. Enjoy the trail
year-round.
Public Parks
Princeton offers a diversity
of public parks - Princeton
City Park, home of the Famous
Princeton Flea Market;
Beautiful Megow Park located
on Water Street with the
Fox River flowing behind it;
Heistand Park on the Fox River
banks; Old Mill Park, with picnic tables and fun for kids and the
Lions Park with tennis courts and ice skating pond.
Winter Outdoor Fun
When fields are bare,
lakes freeze over and everything is covered in a frosty
white blanket, it’s time to
play the hardy way.
Miles of manicured
snowmobile trails take you
for short hops or day-long
excursions from county to
county. When you plan your
route, don’t forget to take a
break at your favorite rest
stops to warm up and catch a bite to eat.
Make it a weekend or a great afternoon break enjoying the
silence of the winter woods when cross country skiing. Beautifully
maintained trails for all levels of skiers abound in the Princeton
area.
The lakes turn into small (or maybe not so small) villages when
water turns to ice. Whether sitting on a bucket and jigging in a hole
cut in the ice or sitting in a warm fishing shack, playing cards and
watching tip-ups, winter fishing is great. Test your fishing talent
(and luck) at many of the fisherees held on Puckaway, Green Lake
and Little Green.
Golf
Princeton sits smack dab in the center of 6 of the finest golf
courses in Wisconsin. From nearly treeless rolling hills of the
“Scottish-style” links to fairways beautifully bordered with mature
and dense oaks and pines, the area is a golfer’s paradise.
Antiques
Princeton is also known for some of the finest antiquing in the state.
It’s easy to spend a full day surrounding yourself with nostalgia as
you peruse the many malls and shops bursting with exquisite artifacts
from days gone by.
Flea Market
Join the fun all season
long. A destination in itself,
Princeton’s Flea Market is the
largest outdoor weekly flea
market in Central Wisconsin.
Enjoy a Saturday stroll in
Princeton’s City Park on Hwy.
23 to browse through 100’s of
vendors goodies. The treasures abound every week as new and
different vendors enter the mix, so make it your weekly stop to
find that long sought after item, or just to get a tasty snack at the
food stand and chat with friends.
“I can’t believe the variety of different things I can find at the
Princeton Flea Market! From the fresh fruits and vegetables and
homemade breads to beautiful plants and unique finds, there is a
treasure for everyone.”
“I can’t believe ALL of the special things you can find in one
spot!”
Shops
Shop downtown Princeton and the surrounding area for some of
the most unique prizes you’ll find. With many crafters and artisans in
residence, Princeton merchants pride themselves on offering unusual,
one-of-a-kind or handcrafted goods. Delight in the atmosphere as you
stroll through shops restored to their 1800’s origins, log-built from
native pines or repurposed in their own unique style.

Schools
The School District of Princeton (PK-12) and St. John’s
Catholic School (PK-8), hold a high standard for a well-rounded
education which is demonstrated in the small classes and attentive,
well-trained teachers and staff.
Among the many opportunities offered to Princeton School
District students are reading and writing school-wide initiatives,
middle school exploratory classes, school forest hands-on learning
activities, School to Work placements, transcripted and distance
learning classes for college credit, opportunities in fine arts,
athletics and a revolutionary new program for students 1-12 called
CEED (Collaborative Education in Engineering and Design).
Students will learn to put into practice the skills required to bring
an actual product to market.
St. John the Baptist provides quality, Catholic education and
is accredited by WRISA. Aside from the basic curriculum,
students attend Religion, Physical Education, Music and Art
classes. Children also attend Mass twice a week. Students can
participate in band, orchestra and sports through the Princeton
Public School District.
