amazed by the classical
music performed by the La

These four versatile musi-
cians have performed together for six years. The
music was beautiful.
Veterans Day—The History

The War To End All Wars,
later known as World War
I, did not officially end until
The Treaty of Versailles
was signed on June 28,
1919. The fighting was
halted on the eleventh hour
of the eleventh day of the
eleventh month (November
11, 1918. This day was
officially remembered as
Armistice Day one year
later by then President
Woodrow Wilson. In
1945, Alabama citizen,
Raymond Weeks led a
delegation to Washington
hoping to expand the day
as an acknowledgement of
all veterans from all our
wars. Congress responded
with legislation providing
that option which was

Reyes Tom Crowned “Miss San Carlos Apache 2012-2013”
By Leon Quintero
The Veterans Day weekend
on the San Carlos Reservation was eventful with many
activities including the rodeo
and the parade. One of the
most important events was
the competitive pageant to
chose Miss San Carlos
Apache 2012-2013.
Three pretty and talented
ladies competed for the title:
Shayna Bush, Winessa Hoffman and Reyes. The three
displayed their talents before judges who would decide this important honor.
A requirement for the contest
was that each contestant
display a talent with the
Apache culture as a theme.
Reyes Tom sang an Apache
song. Winessa Hoffman sang
the Apache horse song and
Shayna Bush performed the
Rainbow Dance for judges
and a delighted audience.
All answered questions related to their goals, their
culture and their general
interests. The decision was
difficult because all of the
ladies were pretty and talented.

Members of the Student
Council met in Mr. Fine’s
classroom for an after-school
session. These elected representatives from our high
school meet to provide valuable input and the view of
the student in school matters.
Reyes Tom won the title of
“Miss San Carlos Apache
2012-2013” to continue the
tradition of the many talented winners before her.
Shayna Bush was chosen first
attendant in the contest and
Winessa Hoffman was chosen as second attendant to
the crown. All three of the
contestants were fine examples of the young and talented generation of Apache.

Electing a President
By Cindi Martin
Barrack Obama was elected
to a second term in the November 2012 election. Challenger, Mitt Romney conceded the election to the
President and it awaits the
decision of the Electoral College in order to formalize
the results.
President Obama won 332
electoral votes and Governor Romney 206. Despite the
disparity in the electoral
vote, the popular vote was
much closer with the President winning the votes of
three million more voters
than the governor. The President received 61,173,739
or 50.5% of the popular
vote to the governor’s
58,167,260 or 48.0%.
The President begins his second term in January facing
record deficits and unemployment. The United States
House of Representatives
remains in Republican control
while the Senate is controlled
by the Democrats. The tax
cuts passed under President
Bush are scheduled to expire
on January 1, 2013 and the
tax rates for all Americans
will rise to the higher levels
of President Clinton’s term
unless an agreement can be
reached between the two
parties. Economist agree that
a failure to reach an agreement on continuing the Bush
tax rates and the cut in expenditures mandated by
earlier legislation may cause
the country to enter a second
recession and increase the
now 7.9% unemployment
rate to much higher levels.
New Teacher-11th Grade Language Arts
Dr. Morrissey began teaching 11th Grade Language
Arts at San Carlos the end of
October. He is originally
from Kansas City, has two

“happily divorced”. This is his
second career. He spent over
25 years in the corporate
world managing businesses
in North America, South
America, Puerto Rico, Eastern
Europe and Africa. The win-
ery he managed in Bulgaria
was his favorite. He left the
corporate world in 2000 to
become a teacher and
achieve “Maslow’s fifth
level”. He completed his BS
in 2001, his MS in 2002,
both from Southern Illinois
University, and his Ph.D. from
Virginia Tech in 2004. He
completed his second MS in
Educational Leadership in
2010. This is Dr. Morrissey’s
seventh year of teaching. He
began teaching at Clifton,
moved to Morenci, and spent
4 years on the Tohono
O’odham Reservation teaching high school and middle

Kentucky where he spent
time establishing his son’s

at San Carlos and finds them

Ms. Taylor hails from Six
Lakes, Michigan which is
aptly named because it
literally has six lakes.
Even though she comes
from a relatively uncreative small farm community Ms. Taylor enjoys
reading, painting, writing,
and riding motorcycles
for which she always
abides by the speed limit.
Her family which consists
of mom, dad, younger
sister, and two beautiful
nieces reside in New
York. She has climbed Mt.
Everest without oxygen
(well maybe in a daydream) and won a gold
medal in napping. Ms. Taylor graduated from Aquinas
College in Grand Rapids,
Michigan and is currently
working on her Masters
degree in English. She
hopes to one day learn the
moonwalk, publish a novel,
and be an extra on “The
Walking Dead.”

History of Thanksgiving
By Nicole Victor
Caption describing picture or graphic.
In the United States,
Thanksgiving holiday tradition is traced to a 1621 celebration in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The feast was
prompted by a good harvest.
Celebrations were held primarily by religious leaders
until the American Revolution. As President of the
United States, George
Washington proclaimed November 26, 1789 as a day of
thanksgiving and prayer
From the time of the Founding Fathers until the time of
Lincoln, the date Thanksgiving was observed varied
from state to state. The final
Thursday in November had
become the customary date
in most U.S. states by the
beginning of the 19th century. Thanksgiving was first
celebrated on the same date
by all states in 1863 by a
presidential proclamation of
Abraham Lincoln.
President Franklin Roosevelt
signed a resolution setting
the 4th Thursday in November as the official date.
Roasted turkey and pumpkin pie are two specialties most often associated with
the holiday of Thanksgiving Day.”
