TRADITIONS A t H eathrow C ountry C lub APRIL, MAY, JUNE 2013 NEWSLETTER In this issue… Events at Heathrow…p. 2 Member Spotlight….p. 3 A Recipe from our Kitchen…p. 4 Traditions at Heathrow…p. 10 C lub N ews From the General Manager..... Nate Kalb General Manager Dear Members, As I write this letter on a rainy Tuesday morning, it is hard to believe that Spring is already upon us. Time seems to pass in the blink of an eye! I hope that you have enjoyed the mild winter weather that we have experienced this year. This letter marks a renewed and continued commitment on part of our leadership team to making Heathrow Country Club the best private country club in our category. When I was given the opportunity to become your General Manager seven months ago, I was extremely fortunate that Concert Golf Partners had already invested so much time, effort, and capital into the club. The progress that had been made before I arrived made it possible for us to continue the improvement process without losing momentum. I can’t help but reflect on the past seven months and all that we have accomplished. At this point in time, I feel very confident about the state of the club, and I am extremely enthusiastic about the future that we envision. I have recently started visiting other clubs in the area to see how we measure up to those that I would consider to be similar to Heathrow. Based on what I have seen, and what many of you have told me, there is no doubt that the state of our club is strong. Members often ask me about my “vision” for Heathrow Country Club. To simply state it, my vision is to make Heathrow Country Club the best club in Central Florida, as compared to other private clubs at a similar position in the market. Internally, we operate by an ever-evolving strategic plan that includes both immediate improvements and long-term goals. The purpose of continual planning in the private club business is to ensure that we stay on course to becoming the best that we can be. Excellence in the operation of a private club is not a destination, but a journey. The plans and strategies must remain flexible as the landscape evolves. We have formalized four strategic priorities under which all of our strategies and initiatives will fall. Those strategic priorities are: • Champion a Culture of Excellence, by exceeding the expectations of our members on a daily basis. • Strive to always maintain Operational Excellence in the service, facilities and experiences that we provide to our members. • Establish Financial Excellence and operate a healthy club through responsible stewardship of resources and by maintaining a strong position in the market. • Promote a Reputation of Excellence within the community for being both an outstanding private membership club as well as a great place to work. These strategic priorities provide guidance for future planning and continued self-awareness, and will guide the actions, activities and programs of our leadership team. We also believe that member engagement is critical in operating a strong private country club. Please know that the feedback and suggestions that we have received have been valuable and appreciated. We will continue to have an “open door policy” as well as an open-minded approach when considering suggestions from our members. Please know that we will always make time to t listen to your thoughts, feedback, and ideas. I look forward to seeing you at the club. Until then, be well. Very truly yours, Nate Nate Kalb General Manager E vents at H eathrow MORE INFORMATION ON ALL OF OUR EVENTS, AND THOSE NOT LISTED HERE, CAN BE FOUND ON THE CLUB CALENDAR AT WWW.HEATHROWCC.COM C lub N ews MEMBER SPOTLIGHT MEET JUDY & TERRY KELCHNER We initially joined Heathrow as Social members about eight years ago and subsequently have become Full Golf members. We have owned a small business in Lake Mary/Heathrow since 1995 and continue to manage it. We feel that the variety of special events sponsored by the club, such as the New Year’s Party and Mardi Gras, have been well-organized and much fun. We use the Aquatics & Fitness Center regularly and are active in the SMGA, MGA, HWGA, and Sunday Couples Golf competitions. The highlight of our membership was recently winning the Couples Club Championship. Terry is also involved with Heathrow C.C. as a member of the Board of Governors. In the past year, we have seen many wonderful improvements at Heathrow and are looking forward to enjoying the Club! Spring is in the Air! I cannot believe we are moving into Spring and Summer… time goes by so quickly at the club! Soon enough, the pool will be 80 degrees, summer camps for the children will be in full swing, and all of the new events will be happening. This is truly a very special private country club, and it’s all of the wonderful members that make it so special. Keep in mind, I am always here to answer any questions, assist you on all levels of membership, bake cookies; whatever is deemed necessary-just let me know how I can help! G olf N ews & E vents From the Director of Golf..... Tim Burns The first quarter of this year saw a lot of member activity on the course. It has been great to see all of you out enjoying the course and the mild winter we were blessed with. We have seen great participation in our Men’s and Ladies events, as well as our senior clinics, junior clinics, and ladies clinics offered by Chris Holmes and the Professional Staff. More clinics and activities will follow in the coming months. We have added a loft and lie machine to our Golf Service Center to enable us to properly adjust your clubs for just the right fit. Upgrades to our instruction facility have been ongoing. If you have not seen what Chris has been doing on the back range, be sure to stop by and have a look. As the summer months are approaching, we look forward to a number of upcoming events. We will be hosting our first Heathrow Memorial Tournament on Monday May 27th. This is open to all golf members. Please call the golf shop for details. We are proud to have been selected to host the 2013 United Sates Open Women’s Sectional Qualifier on Tuesday May 28th. Some of the finest lady golfers in the world will attempt to play their way into the toughest tournament in the world, but they have to get through Heathrow first! Members are welcome to come watch some of the great competition. On Monday June 3rd, we are proud to have been selected to host the 2013 Florida State Amateur Qualifier. Saturday June 15th, we will hold our annual U.S. Open Tough Day Tournament. The course shows its teeth at this annual classic. Be sure to contact me, or any of your professional staff, with any questions you may have. I look forward to seeing you around the club. Golf Instruction..... Chris Holmes Summer will soon be here and we are pleased to announce the return of The Chris DiMarco Junior Golf Camps. For more details or to register please contact Chris Holmes at [email protected] or (407) 314-1118. From the Superintendent..... John Kopack Well, where did the winter go? It was a mild one that provided us with an ideal golfing climate. With April here, I’m looking forward to the Member-Guest Tournament. We plan to provide some excellent tournament conditions so that we can showcase Heathrow Country Club for your guests. After the tournament, we will be aerifying the greens on April 15th & 16th. After months of compaction and frequent mowing at low heights-of-cut, the greens will be able to breathe again. Aerification is essential for healthy turf grass by providing oxygen to the root system, as well as gas exchange, moisture penetration, and nutrient exchange. I fully understand the inconvenience this puts on our avid golfing members. I try to equate aerification to changing the filter on our air conditioning units. We’ve got to do it, or we pay the price in the long run. This month marks my one year anniversary here at Heathrow. I’m really enjoying being part of this club and community. I’ve worked at some great places throughout my career, and Heathrow has undoubtedly become one of my favorites. The Ron Garl design is outstanding. This course has a layout you do not get tired of playing. I can see why we have so many members that have been a part of this club for 20 + years, as I am equally proud to be a part of it. Have fun out there, and I’ll see you out on the course. John S. Kopack W omens G olf N ews & E vents The Heathrow Niners Niners Host “For the Love of the Game” Interclub February 12th saw a field of 72 women playing “For the Love of the Game”, this year’s interclub offering from the Heathrow’s Niners organization. Dora, Cypress Head, DeBary, Keene’s Pointe, Legacy, Spruce Creek, Sugar Mill, Timacuan, Tuscawilla, Victoria Hills, and our own Heathrow women. The weather was delightful, the course was in great shape, and hearts greeted the golfers at each tee box. The scramble format made for a fun morning on the course. First prize for low gross on the front nine was won by the team of Angie Futrell (Heathrow Country Club), Hilary Reilly (Cypress Head), Rena Quirk (Debary), and Jane Reed (Legacy). The back nine low gross winners were Stacy Wilde (Heathrow Country Club), Nancy Burton(Spruce Creek), Ginny Wolff (Keene’s Point), and Bebe Frost (Timacuan). Congratulations to all!
