Fulfilling Promise and Potential
Fulfilling Promise and Potential 2009–2010 ANNUAL REPORT Message from the CEO Dear Friends, East Baltimore, and one in West Baltimore. In July 2010, in an effort to expand opportunities in DC, we opened a new center in the Ward 8 community – one of DC’s most underserved areas. Shortly thereafter, with the generous support of Altria, we announced the launch of operations in Richmond at a press conference with Congressman Bobby Scott, Mayor Dwight T. Jones, and Superintendent Yvonne Brandon. That day, I proudly stood before an audience of school officials, teachers, community leaders, and parents and told them about our results. I told them we couldn’t do it without their support. I told them we were ready to help close the achievement gap in Richmond, and together we could do it. Their response was clear – we got a standing ovation. Our philosophy at Higher Achievement is simple. Every student has potential and promise – and every student, regardless of their circumstance, deserves to have it fulfilled. Making this happen is anything but simple. For an individual scholar, it takes multiple years (four) and many hours (2,600) of unbroken focus and unending hard work. It requires entire communities – volunteers, staff, parents, community leaders, funders, summer teachers, and neighbors – to come together to create a long-term, unbreakable, seamless network of support for young people who need it most. This formula may not be simple, but it’s proven. It works. And it’s the reason why, in 2009, with the unwavering and immensely generous support of a number of partners, we embarked on a national expansion. We know that we can take our track record of success in raising grades, test scores, and school attendance for our scholars in Washington, DC and replicate it for young people in more cities, and in more communities. Not only do we know we can do this, we deeply believe it’s the right thing to do. For us, it’s a moral imperative. This work would not be possible without you, and I want to thank you – for your commitment to helping our young people realize their potential and promise, and your support as we grow. Together, we are doing great things. With gratitude and great hope for our future, Richard A. Tagle Chief Executive Officer In the fall of 2009, we opened two new achievement centers in Baltimore – one in 2009-2010 Higher Achievement Annual Report Page 1 “I will never stop believing in my scholars” A S TAFF S TORY On July 20th, 2010, Higher Achievement joined Ward 8 community leaders, donors, parents, and soon-to-be scholars to celebrate the opening of our sixth Washington DC Metro achievement center. While the ribbon cutting took only a moment, it was over three years in the making. At Higher Achievement, our mission compels us to bring opportunity where it is most desperately needed. Washington DC’s Ward 8 community has the highest unemployment and the highest drop-out rate in the city. It is a place where promise and potential have for too long been squandered. “The Ward 8 Achievement Center began with a belief. Higher Achievement believed that there was untapped talent in a neighborhood that so many have turned their backs on, and they believed that Matt and I could lead this effort,” said Durya Durham, our Ward 8 Center Director. Durya has some impressive stats: she is an experienced teacher; a J. William Fulbright scholarship alumna; and a former Higher Achievement scholar. And when she started with us in Ward 8, she knew that the work of fulfilling promise and potential could only happen if the community as a whole was mobilized to make it happen – not just our staff and scholars, but parents, community leaders, school officials, and neighbors. In the center’s early days, Matthew Kirk, our Matt and Durya Assistant Center Director, worked tirelessly and selflessly to win the support of these stakeholders in Ward 8. “With all the hard work we put into creating a strong foundation for Ward 8, it was important that once we opened the center, we sustained it,” he emphasizes. Their work has paid off in spades, both in scholar achievement and community engagement. In the second quarter of Afterschool Academy, 75% of our Ward 8 scholars improved a full letter grade, and Ward 8 consistently has more than enough volunteers to serve the center – many through partnerships with the Department of Education and Howard University. Durya said it best: “As a Higher Achievement alumna, I know what it means to have someone believe in you, and because of that, I will never stop believing in my Ward 8 scholars.” 2009-2010 Higher Achievement Annual Report Page 2 “I’m ahead of the pack now” AN ALUMNI STORY Tamika is a gregarious junior at the top of her class at Vincent Pallotti High School. She has a 4.2 GPA, and has received A’s as far back as she can remember. However, when she enrolled in Higher Achievement seven years ago, Tamika had no idea what she was capable of – or what she would achieve. Higher Achievement’s research-based program consistently improves grades, test scores, and attendance. For Tamika, this was icing on the cake. What truly changed her life was the confidence and character she built at Higher Achievement – the deep and unending belief Tamika S. that she could do anything she put her mind to. “Before Higher Achievement I was a smart student. The straight A’s girl. But I was not our college search. I’m so ahead of the pack comfortable being that person. I knew I was now and I’m amazed at that.” smart and I knew I was capable, but I was waiting for someone to validate me. It was wonderful being a part of an environment that truly praises your success,” she says. As she blossomed personally, Tamika continued her impressive academic success. With the encouragement of her Higher Achievement mentors, Tamika began planning for college at age 10. Higher Achievement encouraged her dream – and helped make it a reality. “My fondest memory would have to be the college trip to University of Virginia,” she said. “It was wonderful having a college experience Now, nearing the last year of high school, Tamika is on track to realize her dream of attending a top college. “I am co-chair of my Science Research Society, leader of campus ministry, and a member of the National Honor Society,” she beams. She engages in community service and even mentors fellow students. “Through Higher Achievement I began to become refined and polished. Each grade I grew. In fifth grade I was just finding my way; in eighth grade I had truly come into my own.” before entering high school. In 8th grade we know that college exposure is a great opportunity… we really get it when we begin 2009-2010 Higher Achievement Annual Report Page 3 “I’ve become a Aleader” SCHOLAR STORY 12-year-old Francis admits that he used to behave badly in school: “I used to go back and forth with my teachers, because I was always concerned with getting the last word.” After two years in Higher Achievement, Francis sees how his behavior held him back from success – and believes he’s transformed: “My focus on positive behavior has allowed me to better myself as a student. I put more of my energy into my academics.” What sparked this change? Francis will tell you that his new attitude is possible because of the support he has received from Higher Achievement staff and mentors. “Higher Francis K. Achievement adults treat us equally. They treat Thanks largely to Higher Achievement, the us like they see our potential.” He especially Keelings are optimistic about Francis’ future. appreciates consistent Mr. Keeling said “I really like the exposure relationships he has built with his mentors. Francis gets on the college trips. The trip “Because of my mentors, I’ve improved a lot in allows him to set goals... Francis definitely math. They come to Center every week and wants to go to college, so these trips help him show that they believe in us, and prove that in a major way.” the close and they are not just there to be there, but that they are there for a reason.” Francis agrees. Francis and his parents first learned about “I’ve grown with Higher Achievement. I’ve Higher Achievement through a presentation at become a leader. I’ve established some great his school. They were initially impressed by the relationships. And my conduct has changed for safe the the better. Because of these things, I know transportation provided from his school to the that Higher Achievement is one of the best Center. Two years in, Mr. Keeling remains programs in Baltimore City,” he said proudly. impressed. “Higher Achievement instills a “Instead of being on the streets, young people standard of education that has proven to yield should come here, so that they can have a big good life.” community atmosphere and improvements for Francis. And that’s what’s important to me.” 2009-2010 Higher Achievement Annual Report Page 4 S TATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES For the year ended August 31, 2010 2009-2010 Higher Achievement Annual Report Page 5 Leadership Giving For the year ended August 31, 2010 Summa Cum Laude • ($100,000 + ) Magna Cum Laude • ($50,000 + ) 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program, Office of the State Superintendent for Education Altria Atlantic Philanthropies Baltimore City Public Schools Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation Community Foundation of the National Capital Region District of Columbia Public School System Family League of Baltimore City Freddie Mac Foundation Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation The Wallace Foundation American Honda Foundation Anonymous Capital for Children Capital One Eugene and Agnes Meyer Foundation Horning Family Fund LISC Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Naomi and Nehemiah Cohen Foundation Shippy Foundation The World Bank United Way of Central Maryland Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Shippy Foundation c/o Mott Philanthropic The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation The Wallace Foundation William T.
