She joined the Station in 2007, and has also anchored morning and noon broadcasts for CBS4. Cynthia’s career as a journalist began at miami palmetto Junior High School where Cynthia read the morning announcements over the school’s public address (pA) system. She’s proud to have been the first morning anchor on WpAW. many years later after working in television and picking up two Emmy Awards, she’s doing essentially the same thing but for a much larger audience. Before coming back to her native miami, Cynthia was an anchor/reporter for various stations in Orlando, West palm Beach, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and panama City. “I thought a return home to miami would come a lot sooner,” Cynthia says. “It took more than a decade but I never gave up!” She’s covered more than a dozen hurricanes (standing in the middle of most of them), the presidential debacle of 2000, NASA (even travelling to Israel for the first Israeli astronaut’s flight into space). She broke the national story about a woman who went to a hospital to deliver a baby and came out with her arms and legs amputated. She revealed explicit video of a college student smoking an herb called Salvia (with LSd side affects); the drug was later made illegal in the State of Florida. Cynthia came home to more than just a great job. She became reacquainted with a guy she had known since childhood and they got married. She and her husband, matt Rubino are the proud parents of a beautiful daughter who looks like her mother and a handsome son who looks like his dad. 3 2015 Heart & Star Award Dinner Board of Directors EXECUTIVE OFFICERS DIRECTORS President & Founder Pamela Katz Zakheim, M.Ed. As the Chairman of the Cancer Support Community Greater miami (CSCGm) Board of directors, I thank you on behalf of my fellow board members, our dedicated volunteers, and our staff, for making the time to share this very special evening with us. I would also like to welcome our corporate sponsors and thank them for helping us provide services for so many who, at their hour of need, turn to us for education and support. And lastly, I would like to welcome those who are here for the first time. Our mission “to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community” is an enormous under taking and we provide this service at no cost to our participants. A diagnosis of cancer affects everyone, not just the patient; our programs provide families with a place to come and share this journey and they get a sense that they are not alone. All dollars raised this evening stay with us in miami so that we can continue to provide these free services. Tonight we honor two individuals who have made an impact on our community. Alina Villasante is being honored as our Champion of the Community Spirit. Alina is the creator and designer of peace Love World, and her company headquarters is right here in miami. Alina’s motto in business and in her personal life is to spread peace, love and happiness; she considers philanthropy an essential component in both aspects of her life. Alina supports programs including Susan G. Komen For the Cure for breast cancer awareness, University of miami mS Center of Excellence for multiple sclerosis, a school program for children with autism, and a children’s shelter in Haiti. After the earthquake devastated Haiti in 2010, Alina and a team from peace Love World have travelled to Haiti repeatedly, including a recent trip in december, 2014, to provide aid and relief to disabled and abandoned children. Amy Hollub is being honored as our Champions of the Human Spirit. When faced with a diagnosis of cancer, some say why me? Not Amy. She is a five year ovarian cancer survivor and has been a catalyst in the community to battle this disease. With the support of her family and friends, she has created the “Rock N Run” event to raise awareness and money for early cancer detection and services for women with cancer. In addition, Amy is an active community leader and supports various non-profits and organizations including the Temple Beth Am, Greater miami Jewish Federation, Breakthrough miami, Locust projects, Chapman partnership, and United Way Women’s Leadership. So once again, thank you ALL for making this evening possible. your generosity directly benefits thousands of patients and their families who come to us looking for information, support, and comfort. Congratulations to our 2015 Champions! We look forward to honoring you both tonight and we are grateful for your advocacy of the Cancer Support Community Greater miami mission. John M. This is what happened when I met Briana Vega. Briana brought so much to my life. She changed me in many ways and elevated my spirituality to another level. I truly believe with all my heart that she is my angel. I thank the Cancer Support Community Greater Miami for making this little girl’s wish come true, and granting a wish I didn’t know my heart had. I’m honored to receive the Champion of the Community Spirit Award in Briana’s footsteps. peace Love World may seem like an overnight sensation to some, but to Founder and designer Alina Villasante, the luxury lifestyle brand is a dream come true through dedication to hard work and commitment to spreading peace, love and happiness. Born in Havana, Cuba, Alina’s spirit has long since bubbled over with infectious passion and unbridled energy. At 18, Alina settled in miami, Florida, where her love-inspired way of viewing the world took on a life of its own. In 1999 Alina kicked off an annual tradition of gathering her favorite ladies for a night of camaraderie called the Love party. She designed T-shirts, jewelry and pajamas incorporating her beloved symbols of peace, love and happiness to commemorate each event. In no time, the Love party guests generated serious buzz around the whimsical tees and an immense public demand was born. Her friends’ obsession with the tees inspired Alina to take her love of fashion to the next level, and after 17 years in the aviation industry, Alina sold the company. In 2009, she combined her commitment to spreading positivity and her passion for design and fabrics to officially launch peace Love World. The first peace Love World retail store opened in South miami in 2009 with additional stores quickly following. Today peace Love World has a robust e-commerce division, operates seven stores in South Florida, one in Hong Kong, and is sold in over 2,000 boutiques across the country. Alina is proud to call miami home and headquarters for peace Love World. Her inspiration from the people she surrounds herself with and the vibrancy of the city has helped evolve the brand’s iconic symbols to include numerous collections of chic apparel and accessories. peace Love World is more than just a symbol on a shirt. It is a way of life. Every garment is branded with positive affirmations and infused with love in the form of eight embroidered red dash-marks, one dash for every letter in the word “love” and the word “amor.” Alina intricately sews philanthropy into the company’s soul, championing causes closest to her heart, including breast cancer awareness, autism, multiple sclerosis, and Haiti relief. A team of peace Love World staff ventures to Haiti each year to support Zanmi Beni, a children’s shelter in Haiti that houses disabled and abandoned children. peace Love World’s philosophy is as simple as it sounds: the intention to spread peace, love and happiness whenever and wherever possible. Alina credits her success back to one simple concept: people’s connection to fashion with a universal message–spread peace, love and happiness. 8 Honoring Alina Villasante & Amy Hollub CHAmpION OF THE HUmAN SpIRIT Amy Hollub A cancer diagnosis can be devastating. Upon being diagnosed, and as my cancer journey progressed, I realized the importance of a strong support system. I am so fortunate to have the love and support of family and friends. No one should have to travel the path alone. By providing free educational, psychological and social support programs to cancer patients and their loved ones, Cancer Support Community Greater Miami provides a blanket of protection to the entire community for free. This is a fundamental service that improves the lives of people affected by cancer, directly or indirectly, and gives hope and comfort to so many. I am humbled and honored that CSCGM has chosen to recognize me as a “Champion of the Human Spirit.” Truly, it is CSCGM that deserves the recognition for empowering so many in the face of adversity. Amy is a 5 year advanced ovarian cancer survivor who vowed to put cancer in its place. Not only did she overcome the disease, she transformed her adversity to triumph with grace and determination. She strives to empower other women with the knowledge to advocate for their health care wellness and or treatment. Her journey served as the catalyst for the “Rock N Run,” a 5K run/walk and cardio dance class to benefit six deserving cancer charities that either fund research, promote awareness of early detection and prevention, or provide services to women with cancer from under-resourced communities. In its first year, “Rock N Run” raised $41,000 and set the South dade precedent for collaborative fundraising for breast and ovarian cancer. Amy credits her family and friends as her inspiration. She and her husband, Harry, have four children; Aaron, morgan, Rylee and Aliya–and just recently welcomed daughter-in-law, maura. Amy’s career path has taken her from practicing law to selling custom built homes for Hollub Homes. As an active community leader, Amy supports various other non-profits and organizations, including the Temple Beth Am, where she is on the Board of directors; Greater miami Jewish Federation within the Women’s philanthropy division; Breakthrough miami serving on the Advisory Committee; Locust projects; Chapman partnership and United Way Women’s Leadership. 9 2015 Heart & Star Award Dinner Sponsors* PLATINUM HEARTS Chanin & Adam Carlin patty & Leonard Fluxman – The Fluxman Family Foundation Arlene Kahn, “Honoring the memory of Aly Kahn” miami Cancer Institute/Baptist Health South Florida Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center pamela & Richard Zakheim GOLDEN HEARTS Arthur H. Backed by evidence that the best cancer care includes psychosocial support, CSCGm offers these services free of charge to adults and children with cancer and to their loved ones. We help people survive and thrive after cancer, to recover from the physical and emotional effects of cancer, and to gain the support and skills to rebuild their lives in a way that is meaningful to them. I must also thank our participants because day after day they support one another and share their experiences and their strength. Because of this, everyone who walks through our doors is met with a community of people who know about cancer and who come together to make sure that no one faces cancer alone. Peggy Rios, Ph.D. program director Cancer Support Community Greater miami 11 2015 Heart & Star Award Dinner LETTER FROm THE EXECUTIVE dIRECTOR Danielle F. Spiegelman Our 2015 Champions, Amy Hollub and Alina Villasante, are each on a unique and special personal journey. They live their lives filled with compassion, inspiration, and hope. They derive happiness from empowering others through extraordinary, and simple, acts of kindness. Here are my stories about these dynamic women and how they have had a lasting impact on me, the Cancer Support Community Greater Miami and, in turn, countless others. ____________________________________________________________________________ Reflections of Amy: In early 2010 Amy and I were perched in a ballroom doorway lightheartedly talking during cocktails at a Bar mitzvah celebration. I was so happy to see her looking well and smiling. Amy has a great smile. We just chatting…but then she started telling me about her treatment; and her experiences and all she had learned; and then it happened…the loud music, the crowds of people walking by us talking, the clanging of the bar glasses, the laughter from all the kids…it all just disappeared and all I could hear was her. She was passionate, informed and so strong in her convictions. “you must advocate for yourself–ask the doctor questions–know your family history–get genetic testing if you are at risk–focus on your mental health–seek support”, she said. Each point seemed more important than the next and they were just hanging there in the air like billboards. I just stood there mesmerized in the moment listening and learning. Then we both realized we were alone in the hallway because everyone had moved into the ballroom. Amy then smiled and said, “ok, enough cancer talk, let’s go have some fun.” She gave me a hug and walked in the ballroom. She was so brave and so eloquent and I just stood there thinking, wait, come back…this cancer conversation is just getting started. What else should people do? How can I help? This was a huge turning point for me personally and professionally. It was one of the reasons I chose to work at the Cancer Support Community Greater miami. Our mission mirrors her words–Amy’s billboards are our billboards–and now thankfully I can do something, every day! Reflections of Alina: my son had a best friend Briana who also became my friend–she had cancer–she was 12. One day I went to visit her in the hospital and she was wearing a pink peace Love World shirt. She looked so cute despite the fact that she just had chemo. As an adult often does with a child, I underestimated my audience and made small talk in an attempt to lighten the mood and frankly to calm my nerves. So, I commented about how great her pLW shirt was. She said, “yes, it’s an awesome shirt and it’s by my favorite designer. But I like to wear it on chemo days because it feels so good on my skin.” She went on to say, “the chemo burns and the shirt is soft and comforting.” Well so much for small talk….She and I were clearly making “large talk”! Briana really caught me so off guard and I felt compelled to do something…but what? So I reached out to my friends, told them the story and through their kindness, this incredibly human story about a kid with cancer found its way to peace Love World and Alina Villasante. Three months later–fresh off the plane from Haiti rebuilding a children’s shelter–Alina came to visit one of her biggest fans at miami Children’s Hospital. Briana was so excited to meet her. I will forever be grateful to Alina for just showing up. magic was made that day and an intense bond was created between them. In that hospital room I watched how Alina responded to her. Sat on her bed, asked her hard questions and showed a true interest in her. Briana’s parents were thrilled. It was a real moment and it spoke volumes about who Alina is. Thankfully, Alina allowed me retell that story–to a wide array of audiences–many of which are here tonight and now proud funders and advocates of the new CSCGm pediatric Oncology program. ____________________________________________________________________________ Amy and Alina, thank you for all you have done to make each day a little more beautiful. Thank you for making the Cancer Support Community Greater Miami a priority and advocating for our patients and spreading awareness about our free programs and services. And to all of our generous supporters, we are grateful to have you here. We hope this evening touches your heart and your mind. There is nowhere else in the Greater miami area where patients and their families can access such comprehensive psychosocial support at one location. OUR PROGRAMS PARTICIPANT GROUPS Ongoing, weekly groups facilitated by licensed mental health professionals. In these groups, people with cancer draw support from each other and explore new ways to deal with the stressors of their disease. FAMILY GROUPS Because cancer impacts the family and friends of the person with cancer, we offer a comprehensive program of support to loved ones and caregivers, including, but not limited to, ongoing weekly support groups facilitated by licensed mental health professionals. MONTHLY DISEASE-SPECIFIC NETWORKING GROUPS disease-specific support and education groups for cancer patients, family members, and friends to share feelings and concerns about particular diagnoses, treatment outcome, or other related matters. Networking groups currently available include brain tumors, breast cancer, head and neck cancers, leukemia and lymphoma, lung cancer and multiple myeloma. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND WORKSHOPS Interactive learning opportunities provided by experts on a variety of topics that are related to cancer treatment, reducing stress, and maximizing health. programs include: medical updates; managing the side effects of treatment, such as fatigue and pain; family issues related to having a serious illness; financial and legal matters; and quality of life concerns. We also offer a series of programs specifically designed to help the young children of adults with cancer. ONGOING LIFE ENHANCEMENT PROGRAMS These programs are conducted by instructors with expertise in such areas as stress reduction, nutrition, exercise, and visualization of relaxation. They provide the opportunity to learn more about the field of the mind-body connection. participants learn techniques, which they can use at home, to reduce stress and enhance their physical and emotional well-being. Weekly classes include yoga, Tai Chi, Gentle Exercise and Relaxation/ Visualization classes. monthly classes include Nutrition and Cancer workshops. 15 2015 Heart & Star Award Dinner Welcome The Cancer Support Community Greater miami is housed in a facility that is approximately 4,800 square feet. most of our programs are offered, under this one roof. While the facility is part of a strip mall located at the intersection of US1 and North Kendall drive, as people walk through our doors they enter a warm, welcoming space that is not clinical in any way. We are grateful to Darlene & Jorge Perez for their generous gift of the build-out of our space. Each of the rooms is decorated to feel like a home, with comfortable, casual sofas and chairs, coffee tables, lamps, paintings and other beautiful art. Macy’s graciously donated their interior design services as well as all of the furnishings throughout the Cancer Support Community Greater miami. The beautiful pergo® flooring was donated and installed by Mr. & Mrs. Karl Stenstrom. Living Room & Kitchen The entry way above leads directly into the living room, just as it does in any home. The living room has a comfortable seating area and is open to both our gentle exercise room and our kitchen. Our kitchen is fully stocked and is used for cooking demonstrations that follow the recommended guidelines developed by the National Cancer Institute as well as for social gatherings for our participants. The kitchen cabinets were a gift from Stan Krieger, and the appliances were a gift from Mark Lawrence. 16 Honoring Alina Villasante & Amy Hollub Group Rooms We have two rooms that serve as meeting rooms for our various group activities, including the support groups we offer each week. One of our group rooms has been dedicated to the memory of Lilliam Briggs Winograd through a generous donation from Meg & Richard Green. The second group room has been dedicated to the memory of both Brenda Zakheim and Gilda Radner from Pamela & Richard Zakheim. Gentle Exercise Room The gentle exercise area provides an open space for yoga, Tai Chi and other programs that we provide to help people overcome the side-effects of radiation and chemotherapy, as well as to help them manage pain and stress. It is also the site for many of our social events and educational presentations. 17 2015 Heart & Star Award Dinner Library We have a library area containing shelves filled with books and pamphlets of interest to cancer patients and their families, as well as a computer to allow for internet research. This room exists because of the generosity of Mary & Howard Frank. Program Room We also have a playfully decorated room that is both inviting and comfortable for children. Here we provide support services for children with cancer and those who have a parent, grandparent or guardian with cancer. This space is also an additional program room and conference room when needed. Cancer Support Community Greater miami is located in the Kendall 1 plaza just north of the intersection of US1 and N. Kendall drive. We are on the second level of the plaza, on the roof of Ross. The entrance to the plaza is on US1. Once you enter the plaza take the ramp next to Ross up to the second level. you will see a building at the top of the ramp, that's where we are located. park and come in the front door. We are the first door on the right. 18 Honoring Alina Villasante & Amy Hollub The Giving Tree One of the most special highlights within the Cancer Support Community Greater miami is a handmade installation called The Giving Tree. pictured below, it was created by Santa Fe artist david Ross and hangs within our living room through the generosity of the Strochak, Green and Goldban families.
