A Focus on Productivity
Hardinge Inc. has provided
workholding solutions for
machine tool users for over a
century. We are the only
machine tool builder that also
designs and manufactures a
comprehensive range of
workholding systems. This
strategy has produced the
most adaptable, flexible,
complementary workholding
and CNC turning machine
packages available for
optimized productivity.
The Hardinge spindle tooling
systems for the QUEST®,
CONQUEST® and COBRA®
line of CNC lathes are specifically designed to match
the spindles of the machines
to meet all of your machining
requirements.
The unique Hardinge jaw
chuck / collet-ready spindle
design with A2 spindle mount
allows quick changeover
capability with the flexibility
to change from throughspindle bar work to second
operation and chucking work
without the time penalties
and alignment problems
associated with other machine tool builders’ systems.
The range and adaptability
of Hardinge workholding
systems for second operations, blanks and castings
are second to none. These
are adapted from standard
“off-the-shelf” blank “emergency-style” step chucks for
holding round and non-round
shapes. Short grip length
and minimum distortion are
just two of the many benefits
realized.
For maximum reduction of
setup time, the HQC® QuickChange collet system has a
distinct advantage over other
collet systems. Changing
from collet to collet takes less
than twenty seconds and
provides the benefit of true
parallel gripping.
For internal part gripping,
Hardinge Sure-Grip® expanding collets with machineable
Dead-Length® work stops
provide equally effective
solutions for machining parts
with relationship to a premachined bore.
Sure-Grip® lever-operated
counterbalanced 3-jaw
chucks benefit from the same
combination of Hardinge
workholding experience and
technology, giving you
maximum performance at a
minimum price.
The Hardinge Spindle with Collet Seat
®
Cross Section of the Hardinge-Designed Spindle
with Collet Seat and ANSI A2 Spindle Mount
The collet angle, back bearing, spindle face, nose taper and locating
shoulder are finish ground to ensure maximum spindle accuracies. You
are assured the best possible spindle runout – Total Indicator Reading
(T.I.R.) with submicron accuracy on every spindle.
2
Large stocks of CNC lathe
spindle tooling systems
ensure that when a Hardinge
customer has a workholding
problem, Hardinge has the
solution—ready to ship.
A comprehensive range of
workholding accessories
ensures that there is a
Hardinge solution to most
workholding problems
within the capacity of each
machine.
Advantages of the Hardinge® Spindle
The Hardinge spindle design is both jaw chuck- and collet-ready and
does not require a spindle adapter
Hardinge Spindle
shown with Collet
• Collet seats directly in the Hardinge spindle
• Minimum overhang from the spindle bearings
assures that spindle accuracy is transferred
directly to the workpiece
• Maximum rigidity and gripping power
transferred to the part
• Minimum weight on spindle
• Maximum utilization of RPM
• Optimum T.I.R.
• Gripping force directly over the workpiece
• Superior tolerances and finishes
• Capable of using maximum machine stroke capacity
• Quick changeover—collet draw tube is easily and
accurately adjusted from the back of the spindle
• Longer tool life
• Ability to use a wide variety of workholding devices—
3-jaw chucks, collets, quick-change collets, step
chucks, expanding collets, Dead-Length® systems,
fixture plates and others
The Hardinge spindle design
allows quick changeover from bar
work to chucking work!

Disadvantages of Other Spindle Designs
overhang from
spindle bearings
Hardinge® Spindle Design—
No collet adapter required
Other CNC Lathe Spindle Design—
Collet adapter required
overhang from spindle bearings
Other spindle designs require the use of a collet adapter creating an extreme
overhang from the spindle bearings. Any error in the spindle is multiplied by
the overhang distance.
This spindle design:
4
• Is not rigid
• Is not easily adjusted
• Creates poor T.I.R.
• Reduces the work envelope
• Creates excessive overhang
• Does not allow quick changeover

Special Collets
Hardinge has a “special collet” department
dedicated to the manufacture of specialshaped and special-accuracy collets and
step chucks. Hardinge is world renowned
for having the ability to produce very
precise hardened collets for gripping
extruded stock for bar work, as well as
step chucks for gripping large round and
irregular-shaped parts for first operation
and secondary work. This department has
complete facilities to either ram or wire
EDM complex contours needed for gripping
your workpiece. Lead time is typically
between 3 and 4 weeks.

Other Hardinge Workholding Systems
There are many additional Hardinge workholding systems available as standard “off-theshelf” products designed to increase the scope of workpieces which can be held using
Hardinge lathes or Hardinge lathe spindle products. These workholding products can
also be used on non-Hardinge machine tools.
Fixture Plates / Face Plates
Fixture plates and face plates are used to
make special application workholding
arrangements for parts that cannot be held
using conventional Hardinge systems.

Adapters—
16C-to-5C, 20C-to-16C, 25C-to-16C
Adapters enable the use of small-size
collets in larger spindle capacity
machines. There is also a 20C-to-16C
step chuck adapter available for 20C
machines.

Hardinge 16C Collet Block
An A2-5 16C spindle nose block enables
all of the 16C Hardinge lathe spindle
tooling systems to be used for other
machining processes. The same versatile
and accurate Hardinge lathe workholding
system can be used for subsequent
operations, thus eliminating additional
workholding and fixturing cost. The block
has a pneumatically actuated collet “open”
and “close” mechanism.
