Prayer for the Synod on the Family
Dear Heavenly Father,
Our Beloved Holy Father, Pope Francis,
has asked that we pray for the upcoming Synod on the Family.
Please send Your Holy Spirit and fill all who take part
with wisdom, courage and love.
Sustain our Holy Father, Pope Francis,
that he may guide us by his example of fatherly love.
In our families, help us always to follow in Jesus’ footsteps
by showing mercy to others, especially families who suffer separation
from one another and those who feel unloved.
Open our eyes, hearts and hands,
so that we may recognise and serve You
by helping our brothers and sisters.
These things we ask
in the name of Your Son,
Jesus.
Amen.
The Holy Family
St Mary and St Joseph,
pray for us.
Pope Francis has asked that we pray for the Synod on the Family that will take place
from 5-19 October 2014. We invite each family to join in offering this prayer,
perhaps with grace before your evening meal.

The College community acknowledges the commitment of these new leaders to offer their service in such a responsible
way. They will provide wonderful leadership in the Sacred Heart community.
Sister Catherine Brabender RNDM celebrated her Golden
Jubilee of Profession on Sunday, 8 September at St
Bede’s Church in Balwyn North with Mass followed by
afternoon tea. Sister Catherine began her training in
Highgate WA after completing her secondary education at
Sacred Heart and working for a time after leaving school.
She was professed as a Sister of Our Lady of the
Missions on 8 September 1964. Sister Catherine has
experienced a rich and varied life in her RNDM ministry.
She has studied at JSTB Berkeley and Loyola University
Chicago, Principal, Pastoral Associate, RNDM Province
Leader, Pastoral Formator and Facilitator and is currently
the Director of the RNDM International Mission Office.
Sister Catherine travels and keeps in close contact with
RNDM Ministries around the world co-ordinating
fundraising and support for the Sisters and the people
they serve.
Congratulations once again to Phillipa Iatrou and
Elizabeth O’Gorman (Year 11) who spoke at the
Rotary Club of Oakleigh lunch meeting about their
successful involvement in Model United Nations
Assembly (MUNA). The Rotary Club of Oakleigh
sponsored Phillipa and Elizabeth through the
course of the MUNA program. Phillipa and
Elizabeth acknowledged the wonderful support of
the Rotary Club in enabling them to be so
successful. They spoke beautifully to the Rotarians
about the enrichment they gain in MUNA. The
Rotarians congratulated Phillipa and Elizabeth and
acknowledged the commitment and leadership of
Mrs Kate de Lacy as she facilitated the students’
presentation.
On Saturday morning a group of staff members depart from Melbourne Airport to begin immersion programs with the
RNDM Sisters in the Philippines and Vietnam. To Sister Madeleine Barlow, Mr Michael Smith, Mrs Rosalind McMorrow,
Ms Sue Youens, Ms Simone Lennen, Mrs Maureen Pilmore, Mrs Diana De Sensi, Mr Martin Quinlan, Ms Narelle
Marson, Mrs Pierina Garretto, Ms Bianca Di Maria, Ms Máire Mills and Ms Vicki Pobjoy we wish you safe travelling and
many blessings as you visit our partners in mission.
May God, who is present in sunrise and nightfall,
and in the crossing of the sea,
guide your feet as you go.
May God, who is with you when you sit
and when you stand,
encompass you with love
and lead you by the hand.
May God, who knows your path
and the places where you rest,
be with you in your waiting,
be your good news for sharing,
and lead you in the way that is everlasting
from the Iona Abbey Worship Book
On Friday, 5 September the College staff gathered together
with Mrs Christine Walker and her family in the Fourvière
Centre to celebrate her retirement. Mrs Walker, who
completed her secondary education at Sacred Heart,
Matriculated in 1963. She joined the teaching staff in 1983
and the end of 2013 marked 30 years of dedicated service to
the College. In her time at Sacred Heart, Mrs Walker has
been teacher, librarian and Alumnae Co-ordinator and
Archivist. Mrs Walker has been generous in her service of
the College over the many years of her formal association.
She will continue to be very much a part of the Sacred Heart
community as a volunteer in the Archives Department and
as a member of the Past Students’ Association Committee.
On Sunday, 14 September students from the Classes of 1964, 74, 84, 94 and 2004 came to the College for their
significant reunion. Many commented on the changes in the College since their time at Sacred Hart. It was wonderful
to see acquaintances renewed and to hear the sharing of many fond memories of the College. Our Year 9 Tour Guides
were excellent hosts for the afternoon, welcoming our past students and proudly showing our guests around the great
learning spaces of Sacred Heart. Thank you to Alana Hanney, Madisson Upton, Charlotte Sutherland and
Thea Quinlan for generously giving up their Sunday afternoon to be with the past students. Thanks also to the Past
Students’ Association who hosted the Reunion. In particular thank you to the members of the committee who were
present: Mrs Christine Walker, Mrs Pina Perna, Mrs Denise Hutchins and Ms Sarah Milloy.
On Wednesday, twenty six Year 10 students, along with Mrs Tina Carrazzo, Ms Athena Bombas, Mrs Pina Perna,
Sister Rosily Chacko RNDM and Mr Brian McCann left Melbourne on their Central Australian Expedition. It was
particularly cold and wet as the group gathered at 6:00 for a 6:30am departure. The first overnight stay for the
expedition was Renmark then to Alice Springs via Coober Pedy, Kings Canyon, Uluru and Kata Tjuta. The group fly
back to Melbourne on Grand Final eve, Friday, 26 September.
Congratulations to the Sacred Heart students who contributed to the Time to Shine –
Catholic School’s Performing Arts Gala held at the Palais Theatre in St Kilda over last
weekend. Time to Shine provided an amazing opportunity for students in Catholic
secondary schools of the Archdiocese of Melbourne to show their talents and skills in the
performing arts. Over 50 schools were represented with 300 students taking to the stage
in song, dance and music. To the participants from Sacred Heart we express our heartfelt
thanks for being excellent representatives of the College. The students moved through
the audition stage late last year and the intensive rehearsal period began in March this
year. The students are to be congratulated on their commitment and dedication over such
a long period of time. Time to Shine certainly showcased the talented young women and
men in Catholic education in Melbourne. Thank you to singers, Clare Morgan (Year 10),
Kristyn Adamopoulos (Year 8), Usueli Ntuwah (Year 12) and Katerina Kostakos,
Mikayla Cotsis, Meg Tully, Dee Moumas (Year 10) and Tiahne Frederic (Year 11).
At the end of this term we thank and farewell Mr George Reed who has completed a replacement position and
Ms Rebecca Celebuski (Music Secretary) who will be completing her time at Sacred Heart over the term break.
Ms Qing Yan (IT Support Technician) begins maternity leave before the beginning of next term and Ms Caroline
Duckett (Year 11 Co-ordinator) and Ms Belinda Duncan will be taking long service leave for Term 4. Ms Athena
Bombas is the Year 11 Co-ordinator in Ms Duckett’s absence.
The Sacred Heart community offers its prayerful support to our Year 12 class as they undertake VCE Trial Examinations
over the break and prepare for their final two weeks of classes. May the upcoming term break bring relaxation and
enjoyment to re-energize our community for Term 4.
Thank you to all in the Sacred Heart community who have shown wonderful support throughout last term. Every
blessing for the term break.

“We cannot remain passive when faced with innumerable conflicts and wars, declared and undeclared, that nowadays
afflict the human family and ruin the lives of the youngest and of the elderly, poisoning long-standing relationships of coexistence between different ethnic groups and religions."

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – FAITH AND MISSION
YEAR 10 SOCIAL JUSTICE REFLECTION
Monday 15 September
Malala Yousafzai, an advocate for women’s rights through education and Mayra Andrate, a peace campaigner in the
favelas of Brazil are two young women driven by passion and determination who have left an indelible mark on their
communities and our world. So has Hugh Evans, a young Australian who founded the Oaktree Foundation in a bid to
raise awareness and activate against extreme poverty.
Sr Madeleine challenged the young women of Sacred Heart, “As citizens of this world, what can you do to make a
difference?” This was the crux of the Year 10 Social Justice Reflection Experience held on Monday 15 September.
Sister Madeleine Barlow invited all of us, through her inspiring words and captivating videos, to contemplate the specific
role assigned to each one of us as disciples. “You are called to be the light of the world”.
For two periods we were afforded the opportunity to gear our conscience through scriptural verses like ‘Love one
another. As I have loved you, so must you love one another.’ We also considered The Golden Rule, “Do to others as
you would have them do to you.” We learnt that The Golden Rule can be found in most world religions. We then broke
into our homerooms for discussion and delved deeper into ourselves.
We came to the realisation that we have been endowed with marvellous gifts. We too can do our part to end the
immense injustice in our world. We thank Sr Madeleine, Mr Smith and our RE teachers who provided this valuable
opportunity for us to reflect on one of the great issues of our time.

SHGC OUTREACH – STAFF IMMERSION EXPERIENCES
Evangelii Gaudium – The Joy of the Gospel
Personal accompaniment in processes of growth
169. “In a culture paradoxically suffering from anonymity and at the same time obsessed with the details of other
people’s lives, shamelessly given over to morbid curiosity, the Church must look more closely and sympathetically at
others whenever necessary. In our world, ordained ministers and other pastoral workers can make present the
fragrance of Christ’s closeness and his personal gaze. The Church will have to initiate everyone – priests, religious and
laity – into this “art of accompaniment” which teaches us to remove our sandals before the sacred ground of the other
(cf. Ex 3:5). The pace of this accompaniment must be steady and reassuring, reflecting our closeness and our
compassionate gaze which also heals, liberates and encourages growth in the Christian life.”
Pope Francis.
The “Art of Accompaniment”
During the term break, staff members will travel to Vietnam and the Philippines. These experiences will
allow these staff members to engage with the RNDM Sisters as they accompany the marginalised.
VIETNAM EDUCATIONAL PLACEMENT
Ms Narelle Marson will provide intensive English language classes for Vietnamese RNDMs undertaking their formation.
A number of years ago the RNDM Sisters decided that English was to be the international language of their religious
order. The language lessons provided by Ms Marson will enable the Vietnamese RNDMs to become more confident and
competent in their spoken expression of the English language.
PHILIPPINES IMMERSION EXPERIENCE
Twelve members of staff will participate in an immersion experience which provides first-hand experience of RNDM
ministry with the marginalised on the streets of Manila and in the mountains of Mindanao. The immersion experience
provides the opportunity to accompany the RNDM Sisters as they “…present the fragrance of Christ’s closeness and his
personal gaze.” We will have the opportunity to “…remove our sandals before the sacred ground of the other” when we
meet with the girls, young women and elders of the Dulungan Menubo tribe in Mindanao.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - STUDENT WELLBEING
In the busyness of life, it can be so easy to overlook our wellbeing as well as the wellbeing of others within our
communities. We are often so easily consumed by the work we must complete and the deadlines we must meet that we
can slip into a pattern of not really enjoying life or forgetting the importance of relationships we value. Each year, the
second Thursday in September marks the national day for shining a light on wellbeing and remembering that is at the
core of who we are as human beings.
R U OK Day was celebrated on 11 September and this year through the leadership of our Year 12 students: Bhavana
Vutukoor, Deputy Captain Social Justice and Seveni Perera , member of the Student Wellbeing Action Group, the
College once again marked the importance of wellbeing through a lunchtime concert. It was an opportunity to enjoy the
gifts and talents of so many students who performed on the day and to also recognise not only the wellbeing needs of
our community but also the victims of those within our world who are subjected to war and suffering. I would like to
thank Bhavana and Seveni for their commitment to the concert, especially at this busy time of their studies. Thanks also
to Lissette De La Motte from Year 8 who helped Seveni in co-hosting the concert and to the many girls who
performed. Proceeds of the money raised from the concert will be forwarded to Caritas for their Syrian Crisis Appeal.
Recently I received reports that some of our girls are not as vigilant as they should be when crossing roads on the way
to and from the College. Some are crossing in front of cars and nearly causing an accident. This is of utmost concern
and could result in girls and innocent drivers being seriously hurt. Students have been reminded to cross roads carefully
and to watch for oncoming traffic. At all times, they should use pedestrian crossings and lights when they are available. I
ask parents/guardians to also remind their daughters to be mindful when stepping onto the road and watch for
oncoming cars.
As we come to the end of Term 3, I wish all our Year 12 students the very best as they prepare for their final
examinations. Know that you have the prayers and support of the staff at Sacred Heart who will work with you to
achieve your best. We hope the coming term break is an opportunity to balance your time with some rest as well as
revision. We also hope you see the upcoming trial examinations as a chance to consolidate your learning and to identify
the areas of need for further revision in Term 4.
A reminder that when we return in Term 4, all students will wear their full Summer Uniform. The term break is an ideal
time to ensure dresses are of an appropriate length and in good order. A reminder also that the College summer socks
introduced this year are now part of the uniform and should be worn by all students.
I wish all staff, students and their families a safe and restful term break and look forward to seeing you all again next
term.

YEAR 12 PHYSICS EXCURSION
On 29 August, Mr Scott Cox took the small but enthusiastic Year 12 Physics class to the Synchrotron as part of their
Unit 4 studies. Having a world class facility like this practically on our doorstep is too good an opportunity to miss.
Below, two students reflect on their day.
The Year 12 Physics class were lucky enough to go to the Australian Synchrotron in Clayton. The experience allowed
us to extend our knowledge related to light and matter. We were privileged enough to go inside the beamlines of the
Synchrotron which our tour guide Jonathan said was a once in a lifetime opportunity. With our enthusiastic tour guide,
the day was very enjoyable and contributed to our greater understanding.

YEAR 9 CITY EXPERIENCE 2014
CITY EXPERIENCE PARENT EXPO: THURSDAY 4 SEPTEMBER
A huge number of parents and family members crammed into the
Year 9 classrooms to witness the 2014 Year 9 City Experience
Oral and Multimedia Presentations and they did not leave
disappointed. Demonstrating maturity and poise, student groups
proudly stood before their families and presented their ten minute
responses to the 2014 big question, Melbourne: Just in the
future? Students were required to reflect on the past, evaluate
the present and predict the future. This task was not an easy one
and even though the bar was set very high, our students rose to
the challenge. Lesson times and lunchtimes were utilised to
perfect their work and all students involved should be very proud
of their achievements. For some students, the presentations
were the first time that they have spoken formally in a public
gathering and as such, they were extremely nervous. Prior to the
night, groups had presented to their class and Religious
Education teacher and received feedback regarding content and
delivery. Utilising feedback in this way to improve student
outcomes is based on the research by Melbourne University
researcher, John Hattie. Students then worked feverishly to
improve their presentation aware that their next audience would
be family members! Overall, the Year 9 City Experience Parent
Expo was a unique, engaging and informative evening. Well
done to all of our Year 9 students!
SO… WHAT DID OUR STUDENTS GET UP TO IN THE CITY
THIS YEAR?
City Experience 2014 challenged Year 9 students to cope with
the rigours of four days of travelling to, from, and around the City
of Melbourne.
Students explored a range of venues, were tested by the
strange and endearing qualities of Melbourne trams, tasted a
huge variety of cuisines, consumed copious quantities of hot
chocolate, marvelled at some of Melbourne’s icons and
gradually learned about the city’s complexities and
shortcomings.
The overarching theme was a difficult one, ‘Melbourne: Just in
the future? Everything students did and saw in the city was
directed at helping them respond to this complex question.
Navigating their way around the city in small groups of four or five,
students completed a range of tasks. Each day officially began at 9.00am
with a briefing and opening prayer at St Francis’ Monastery Hall. This
‘oasis’ on the corner of Elizabeth and Lonsdale Streets, provided students
and staff with a homely respite, greatly welcomed on several very cold
days and when a thunderstorm hit the city with vengeance!
All students enjoyed a Social Justice lunch, visited the Old Melbourne
Gaol, the Chinese Museum and participated in skills workshops at either
the Melbourne Museum or the Immigration Museum. The four days in the
city enabled our students to spend time at St Patrick’s Cathedral and St
Francis’ Church. In the second week of City Experience, the national
memorial service at St Patrick’s for the victims of MH17 necessitated the
closure of the Cathedral for 48 hours by the Federal police and forced a
sudden program change. St Francis’ Church became a major focus and
enabled students in 9 Purple, Red and Silver to experience class masses
in this unique and beautiful church in the heart of the city. Many students
also took the opportunity to visit the place of worship of other Christian
denominations such as St Paul’s Anglican Cathedral. A particular
highlight for all staff and students was the interesting and inspiring
workshop at ‘Big Issue Classroom’. This opportunity provided a
confronting and challenging insight into homelessness. All students also
visited the Melbourne General Cemetery in Parkville. Although the task at
this venue was quite challenging and tested their map reading and
navigational skills, it enabled students to visit the graves of RNDM sisters
and develop an understanding of the cultural and religious diversity of
early Melbourne.
To further advance their knowledge and understanding of what makes a
just society, smaller groups attended other venues such as the Shrine of
Remembrance, State Parliament, the State Library, NGV International,
ACMI and the National Sports Museum. Adding colour and flair to the
experience was the discovery by students of hidden lanes, stunning
arcades and extraordinary street art.
With work experience and VCE subject selections occurring within the
next twelve months, Year 9 students participated in the METRO-GAINE
Careers Challenge. This activity directed students to take a closer look at
careers and further education opportunities available within the City of
Melbourne. Despite the presence of wind and rain, students moved about
the city in their small groups and tried to complete a range of tasks that
involved problem solving, navigation and lateral thinking. The winning
groups were rewarded with some great prizes.
After four days in the City, not only had students developed a greater understanding of our society but their ability to
take responsibility for themselves, one another and their own learning was considerably enhanced.
Thank you to all staff involved and well done to the 172 students who participated in the 2014 Year 9 City Experience.
