Wroten As of July 31, 2009 “One of the area’s most exciting artistic developments this decade has been Miguel Harth-Bedoya’s transformation of the Fort Worth Symphony into a major-league operation.” — DALL AS MORNING NEWS A MESSAGE FROM THE C HA I R M A N This quote from the Dallas Morning News was just one among an outpouring of critical praise this past year for the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra’s growing worldwide reputation for artistic excellence. This success is due to the extraordinary musicianship and dynamic leadership of Miguel Harth-Bedoya who has shaped this Orchestra into one of the finest ensembles in the country. Our superb musicians never cease to amaze me with their infinite talent and dedication to their art form. The 2008-2009 season was filled with glorious musical moments but also brought unique challenges in the current economic climate. The Texas Ballet Theater was forced to cancel its $360,000 contract with the FWSO. Individual contributions, foundation and government grants, and corporate sponsorships have also declined due to the effects of the recession. Our dedicated staff, under the relentless and unique guidance of our President Ann Koonsman, and our devoted and generous board of directors, overcame financial obstacles. With the enormous efforts of our administrative team, we succeeded in countless fundraising efforts and increased single ticket sales, as well as rigorous cost controls including reductions in staff and salary freezes. We trimmed the shortfall from $700,000 to $175,000 – truly a Herculean accomplishment. The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra Association would like to express its appreciation and gratitude for your generous support of the 2008-2009 season. Your continued support and encouragement will enable our orchestra to nurture and enrich the lives of our entire community through great music. This season, more than ever, we urge you to attend as many concerts as possible and bring your friends and family. Please take the time to mark your calendars for the 2009-2010 season. The artistic staff and Miguel Harth-Bedoya have planned a season filled with beautiful music performed by great artists. I would like to remind you that your presence and applause are most meaningful to our brilliant Orchestra! Warmest regards, Mercedes T. Bass Chairman of the Board PHOTO CREDIT: RICHARD W. RODRIGUEZ SEA S O N H IGH L IGH TS The season represented Miguel Harth-Bedoya’s ninth as Music Director and featured widely-praised performances at Bass Performance Hall, our summer “home” at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, in the orchestra pit for ballet and opera productions, and on stage with some of the world’s finest young pianists during the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. More than 227,000 adults and children from all walks of life experienced 213 enriching performances in Fort Worth and in rural communities across the state. ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENTS The FWSO ushered in the 2008-2009 season with the second installment of the Mahler Cycle. In an ambitious endeavor of three consecutive evenings of three Mahler Symphonies (the Second, Sixth and Seventh), the Orchestra delivered performances that were received with standing ovations and were highly lauded by critics. The Dallas Morning News proclaimed that “once again the FWSO played like a major league orchestra.” The Mahler Festival was followed by a superstar opening weekend of the Symphonic Series featuring venerable pianist Andre Watts and Respighi’s resplendent work, The Pines of Rome. The season’s symphonic concerts also presented many bright up-and-coming talents such as pianists Ang Li and Ingrid Fliter and 14-year-old prodigy Conrad Tao who brought the house down with his astounding debut performance of Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto. Imaginative programming was incorporated throughout the season such as the ingenious presentation of Stravinsky’s Petrouchka. In this production, the celebrated puppeteer Basil Twist wove the familiar Russian tale of a tragic love triangle through an incredible and evocative combination of Czech and Japanese puppetry techniques. The Orchestra’s partnership with its third composer-in-residence, Behzad Ranjbaran, brought to the stage the music of our time with highly successful performances of this revered composer’s works. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Family-friendly programming such as “Oz with Orchestra” and the perennial-favorite Home for the Holidays made the FWSO accessible to audiences of all ages. Concerts In The Garden continued its tradition as one of the most musically-diverse and family-oriented outdoor music festivals in the country. Nearly 41,000 adults and children attended 16 performances featuring tributes to Elvis and The Eagles, country music and Big Band nights, and the debut performance of 2009 Cliburn Medalist, Di Wu. The Orchestra strives to engage underserved communities that lack access to the performing arts. A first this year, Tidings of Joy free holiday concerts were offered for deserving audiences including police, firemen, and military personnel. As the cultural ambassador of the state of Texas, the FWSO brought music to smaller communities including Killeen, Waxahachie, Graham and Stephenville. DYNAMIC COLLABORATIONS The FWSO is recognized for its successful partnerships, serving as the official orchestra for the Fort Worth Opera, the Southwestern Seminary Master Chorale and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. An alliance with the Children’s Education Program of Performing Arts Fort Worth enabled more than 28,000 area students this season to experience the joy of great symphonic music in the incomparable acoustics of Bass Performance Hall. .................................................................... Looking forward, the FWSO continues to invest in dynamic programming that appeals to the widest possible audience; explore new approaches to concert formats that are responsive to community needs; and strengthen its partnerships and collaborations with other performing arts institutions. “Harth-Bedoya and the Orchestra pulsed with red-blooded passion in a spirited conclusion to a remarkable concert and another satisfying symphonic season.” — STAR-TELEGRAM BY THE NUMBERS ATTENDANCE 2008-2009 # OF TICKETED SERIES CONCERTS ATTENDANCE Symphonic 30 32,299 Pops 22 31,335 Special Concerts 6 9,408 Mahler Festival 4 4,093 Concerts In The Garden 16 41,485 FEE ENGAGEMENTS Opera 12 13,601 Cliburn 7 12,127 Ballet 4 3,735 Choral 4 4,750 Bass Hall Presents 2 2,309 Nokia Theatre 1 1,500 Young Persons’ Concerts 14 22,542 Kinderconcerts 3 2,282 3 3,747 EDUCATION CONCERTS Programs for Middle & High School In-School Performances 43 11,555 Peter & the Wolf with Ballet 8 13,438 Touring Performances 22 15,293 Free Community Performances 12 1,863 Pre-Concert Lectures 33 6,600 246 233,962 COMMUNITY CONCERTS & AUDIENCE PROGRAMS TOTALS PHOTO CREDIT: RICHARD W. RODRIGUEZ ED UCATION H IGHLI GHTS SPONSORS The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra affirms that music should be an integral part of every child’s education. That well-founded belief is what guides Adventures in Music, our education and outreach program that inspired and educated nearly 70,000 children during the 2008-2009 season. ALCON FOUNDATION Our education programs nurture the minds of children of all ages. Beginning in preschool, young children start their musical journey with Kinderconcerts, which this year featured the Dr. Seuss classic, Green Eggs and Ham. For the first time, the FWSO provided free admission to 2,000 kindergarteners from underserved schools, and each child also received his or her own hardback copy of the Dr. Seuss book, courtesy of the Red Oak Foundation. The Carnegie Hall LinkUP! program inspired more than 6,000 fourth graders through this nationally recognized music literacy program. Each child received a soprano recorder and intensive classroom instruction and performed with the Orchestra at the end-of-year concert. The FWSO strives to reach young audiences outside the concert hall. This past year, the Orchestra performed free concerts for students at Fort Worth Country Day School, at Cook Children’s Medical Center, and a first-time visit to Happy Hill Farm, a residential school for at-risk children outside Glen Rose, Texas. Nurturing young musicians is an important role for the FWSO. In October, the orchestra presented a Side-by-Side Rehearsal with the members of the Youth Orchestra of Fort Worth, giving these young players the opportunity to be mentored by a professional musician. The Symphony’s annual Young Artist Competition is a true forum for standout talent. This year’s winner, 15-year-old pianist Sam Hong, performed on stage for an audience of 3,000 at Concerts In The Garden. Music education and community outreach are vital to the mission of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. Through Adventures in Music, children and adults in our community and beyond experience the joy of symphonic music and gain memories that will last a lifetime. AMON G. Thanks to the nearly 3,800 patrons who stood by the Orchestra with $5.6 million in support, the season concluded with a manageable deficit much lower than originally projected. The Arts Council of Fort Worth and Tarrant County awarded the Orchestra increased grants totaling more than $375,000 to underwrite general operating expenses and outreach efforts through the Neighborhood Arts Program. Government entities and 27 private foundations contributed $1.7 million to maintain the Orchestra’s exceptional artistic and educational programming. The investment of our corporate sponsors was more important than ever to the Orchestra’s financial well-being. The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra proudly welcomed Park Place Motorcars and Hawk Electronics as major sponsors and forged new partnerships with Bell Helicopter, Southwest Bank and WFAA-TV Channel 8. The FWSO is especially grateful for its continued relationships with Alcon, American Airlines, BNSF Railway, Corriente Advisors, Davoil, Frank Kent Motor Company, JPMorgan Chase, Renaissance Worthington Hotel, the Star-Telegram, and XTO Energy. Sound fiscal practices have long been a hallmark of the FWSO. Recently, the FWSO was recognized by Charity Navigator as a “Four-Star Charity” based on organizational efficiency and capacity. Only eight orchestras in the nation received this coveted ranking. Gifts from generous individuals represented more than 50% of the Orchestra’s total annual contributions. Circles of the Symphony and Friends of the Symphony boasted a combined 3,200 members who gave generously to the Orchestra’s Annual Fund. ¡Vivace!, our membership group for the younger set, gathered for several events including a boot-scootin’ good time at Rahr Brewery and a post-concert Wizard of Oz party for families. In addition to having a lot of fun, ¡Vivace! members did a lot of good, raising $125,000 for the FWSO through these events and its annual scavengerhunt-style fundraiser, Haydn Seek. The Gala in April was a smashing success, featuring a jaw-dropping performance by prodigy pianist Conrad Tao and raising an impressive $800,000 for educational and artistic initiatives. Other special events included a first-time collectibles auction at a Board of Directors meeting and the second annual car raffle at Concerts In The Garden. The FWSO extends its gratitude to the many individuals and organizations that encouraged and supported the Orchestra this season through their volunteer efforts and financial contributions.
