This work goes on in places like Asia, South America, the Middle-East and Africa and always uses local people to ensure authentic translations and to increase engagement between people and the church. A few weeks ago, Wycliffe Associates released a statement that indicated four translators lost their lives to militants. The statement went on to indicate that after the shooting all the equipment in the office was destroyed and books and other translation equipment was burned. The statement did not disclose which country because it would only make things worse for those left behind. The charity has also stated that this setback, will not stop the effort to continue the work of sharing scriptures with all people. Although in many countries around the world Christianity is now suffering and genocidal attacks in the Middle East and Europe have meant that some have paid the ultimate price for their beliefs, however it is events like this that reminds one of Tertullian. Tertullian was an early Christian author (c. 160 AD) who has been described as the founder of western theology. He grew up in Carthage, (located in modernday Tunisia, Africa) and believed among other things that a literal resurrection of the those who have died occurs when Jesus returns not at death. Tertullian once stated that the ‘blood of martyrs is seed’ meaning that the church grows when attacked and it raises the question for me and you – what would we do when faced with challenges like the friends of the four translators? Would we have the courage to continue in the face of such extreme opposition? It’s worth a thought. Gilson College Mer nda The Senior School (aka the Bird Cage) As many of you will be aware when Gilson College purchased the Mernda campus we inherited a number of unresolved issues. These included the connection of the campus to the sewerage system, the provision of a canteen, the purchase of the classrooms located in the staff carpark, the purchase of the land from the Shire of Whittlesea and the incomplete senior school building which has become affectionately known as the Bird Cage. (For those wondering, it received this name due to the beautiful ornithological sounds coming from the structure at dusk.) Each one of the above issues has been resolved except the completion of the senior school building and so last year we began the task of pulling together a team of people including architects, consultants and financiers working with us here at the College to see this wonderful facility completed. Part of this process involves applying for a government grant to assist in the finances. Government Grant It is with great pleasure that we can announce that during the holidays we received notification that our proposal has been recommended for a grant of almost $1,000,000 on a dollar-for-dollar basis. This will allow us to see the facility completed to lockup stage as well as the complete outfitting of the ground floor, which will include a substantial sized library, classrooms, science laboratory and art room. The fit out and the occupancy of the second floor will take place in phase 2. The Polly Woodside was built as a cargo ship to carry coal, nitrate and wheat. Life was not easy as a sailor on a small cargo vessel. There were generally less than 20 sailors on board and jobs had to be shared by all.
