President’s Message
Devin Elkin
If someone can please tell me how
on earth it became November already?! I know I took part in July,
August, had a birthday in September that I remember,
October I recall orange objects on people’s steps but
now I am writing November’s message, NUTS!
So let’s try to capture what’s new and exciting in our
wonderful community. Not sure if everyone has had a
chance to look at the census results for 2014 but in case
you haven’t here are some quick “did you knows” that
you can pocket and show off with your neighbours
later. The total dwellings in Sundance currently sits
at 3,409 with 10,634 people residing in those homes,
that’s a lot of bunk beds. Midnapore has 2,748 dwellings with 6,958 people living in those homes so in total
Midsun has 6,157 dwellings and a total population of
17,589 people, who knew?! So if you are one of those
wonderful residents that reads my message monthly
then you probably know where this is going. So let’s
say half of those residents are kids, that leaves 8,794
residents and let’s also say 2% of those are already
involved in a committee of some sort, which leaves a
total of 8,618 people that must be looking for something to do. Well I am blessed to have 16 dedicated
people on our community association board but we
need help. In order to represent our best interests in
a manner that reflects our population we need more.
So I am calling out the 8,600 or so residents to please
consider giving up one night a month to come, have
a listen, and observe the great things we are doing to
continue to make these the best darn communities in
the city. Come out and have a voice, have a say and
bring those ideas. The challenge is out there, now let’s
see who responds.
Speaking of having a voice, I was ecstatic to see over
50 plus people attend the Midsun Skate Plaza Design
Workshop on the 7th of October. The diversity in age
and opinion was exactly what we wanted to see. There
was an enormous amount of feedback and concep4
tual ideas given that I am so looking forward to seeing the initial drawings come back in two months. We
are looking to incorporate the heritage of Midnapore
and the elements in Fish Creek Park into this design
so watch for more information about the next open
house. Make sure you “like us” on Facebook or check
the web site for further details. I especially wanted to
call out the youth that attended this workshop. I was so
impressed by their behaviour, intelligence and overall
respect for the community and its impact. It is this type
of youth that will take a great deal of pride in the plaza
and make sure that ALL who use it will bring a proper
level of respect. Thank you also to those that came out
opposed to this plaza, I had many great conversation
throughout the evening and was reminded again of
the passion residents have for this community. It is my
belief that we all left with a better vision of the end result and a new respect for each other’s views. With that
we will continue to make sure that no one feels that
their voice wasn’t heard.
So in closing I wanted to thank our past board and
welcome the new board into another year of serving.
By time this hits your door steps our AGM should have
concluded. We will have celebrated our success, reviewed our failures and prioritized our future goals but
again WE NEED HELP. We will be tackling some grand
plans this upcoming year, a MAJOR renovation of the
centre, a NEW COMMUNITY MARKETING plan to improve how we engage our residents and MORE COMMUNITY EVENTS. This won’t happen without ideas and
many hands so please let me know via e-mail if you are
interested in finding out more. [email protected].
Finally I wanted to say good bye to our faithful board
secretary. She has served OUR community for over 6
years and has personally been my rock when I needed
one to stand on. She has brought passion and a servant’s heart to each and every board meeting. Was
instrumental in the redevelopment of our bylaws and
overall functionality of the board. It’s with a heavy
heart we say goodbye to Patsy McNish. I will miss you
Patsy and consider myself a better person for knowing
you. All the best with your future projects and thank you
from the bottom of my heart for all that you have done
for me and for our communities.
Loving where I live,
Devin

MIDNAPORE LAKE
RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION
It’s November!
Preparations are well under way for another fun winter season on Midnapore Lake. The docks, water slide
and boats are being stored for the winter, the Zamboni
is being tuned up and the holiday lights are being installed and tested. Get your toboggans ready, sharpen
everyone’s skates and perfect those hot chocolate recipes because winter is approaching and the park is in its
annual transformation into a winter wonderland. Keep
an eye on MidnaporeLake.ca for updated snow and ice
conditions.
You may have seen some interesting looking metal
poles with chain baskets attached to them throughout the south-east side of the “big hill” recently. These
are the baskets for the new DISC GOLF COURSE which
was successfully installed this fall for the enjoyment
of everyone. A special thank you to Neil MacEwan for
spearheading this project; it will be another fun way
to spend time at the park! Signage and “tee boxes” will
also be added to make navigation easier in the near
future, so in the meantime ask the staff for some directions. This is a really fun way to spend time at the park
year round, any Frisbee will do, and it’s fun for all ages!
A HUGE shout out and thank you to everyone that attended the ANNUAL MOVIE ON THE BEACH back in
September. Over 1000 members and their families and
guests attended, and from all accounts, everyone had a
fantastic time. Thank you to all the staff and volunteers
that worked hard to make the event a big success.
The Midnapore Lake Residents Association Board of
Directors has been going through some changes. Neil
MacEwan and Rahul Shrivastava have stepped down
for other personal commitments. We want to thank
them for their volunteer service to the community.
The MLRA is a great place to VOLUNTEER your time and
we are always looking for community members to join
the team! Board and Committee members meet just
2-3 hours per month and without this service by our
members the park can’t operate. Perhaps you have a
special skill that could be an asset or maybe you want
to learn more about park operations or just to get to
know your fellow community members. We welcome
you! Please give us a call at (403) 256-0550, or send an
email to [email protected] for more information.

The federal department of Veterans Affairs Canada
states that November 11 is a day of “remembrance
for the men and women who have served, and
continue to serve our country during times of war,
conflict and peace”; specifically, the First and Second
World Wars, the Korean War, and all conflicts since then in which members of
the Canadian Forces have participated. The department runs a program called
Canada Remembers with the mission of helping young and new Canadians,
most of whom have never known war, “come to understand and appreciate
what those who have served Canada in times of war, armed conflict and peace
stand for and what they have sacrificed for their country”.

When winter hits,
we’re ready.
You can count on city employees
to keep our neighbourhoods safe
and clear — in any weather.
Big storms often don’t give you much
warning. A city like Calgary needs a
team in place that can hit the streets
with a few hours notice.
Fortunately, that’s just what we have.
When the snow flew early this year,
Calgary’s city employees were prepared:
plowing streets and sidewalks, clearing
downed branches, trees and other debris,
salting and sanding.
We’re your reliable, dedicated team.
So when some politicians talk about
replacing experienced public employees
with for-profit contractors, know that it
comes at a price.
When your family’s safety is on the line,
cutting corners isn’t worth it.

What is the Good Food Box?
The Good Food Box (GFB) is a program under the Community Kitchen Program of Calgary whereby you can
purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at a very low cost.
The Good Food Box is a hands-up program as opposed
to hands-out. We offer all Calgarians’ sustainable access to nutritious food to ensure that no one has to go
hungry. The boxes are put together and delivered by
dedicated volunteers who along with The Community
Kitchen desire to see individuals and families accessing
affordable nutritious food.
How Does the Good Food Box Operate?
The GFB operates by buying fresh, top quality produce
directly from farmers and from wholesale clubs. The
food is bought in bulk and dropped off at their warehouse. Their volunteers then divide up the produce
into portions and put the Good Food boxes together.
The boxes contain the maximum produce possible in
them for the price.
How to Order a Good Food Box
When a member of the community wants to order a
Good Food Box, they must call (403-254-8058), email
([email protected]) or drop in to the community center, in advance of the cut-off date and time as listed.
Payment in CASH, must also be made prior to the cut
off date and time. You may also pre-order your boxes,
as far in advance as the dates provided, but payments
must be made by each monthly cut-off date.
Picking up your Good Food Box
Your order will be delivered to Mid-Sun Community
Center after 12:00pm on the noted delivery date. MidSun Community Center staff will notify you by EMAIL
once the delivery has been made, and is available for
pick up. Check in at the admin office to sign off your
pickup, and the staff will take you to your box. The order MUST be picked up by 9pm that night or it will be

St. Philip Fine Arts School
13825 Parkside Drive S.E., Parkland
At St. Philip we are getting excited about our yearlong residency with Calgary Opera. All the staff and
students were introduced to opera with an assembly
that included two artists from Calgary Opera and the
school programming director. The students learned
that opera is telling a story with songs and everyone
will be a part of the opera in May, 2015. A professional
librettist worked with all the students in October to
develop an idea for the story or libretto and he will
write the story from their words. In January, a composer will put the libretto to music and he will work
with the students to teach them the parts. Finally,
a director from Calgary Opera will help to put it all
together. We will keep you posted of what our opera
will be called after the students create it.
“Love Kindness” is our School District theme and
that is evident every day at St. Philip. This fall, we had
two projects to support people in need in our city.
The Pass It On Clothing Drive collected fall and winter clothing and outerwear for all ages. These items
were sorted and distributed out of St. Mary’s Church
hall. At the same time, we collected winter coats
and snow pants for the Jacket Racket program. We
hope everyone has the proper clothing to keep them
warm this winter.
Community Update On New Schools
The Calgary Board of Education is pleased to welcome
more than 3,000 additional students this year. With
rapid growth comes the challenge of finding schools
for all these students. Funding for new school construction hasn’t kept pace with growth, particularly in
new communities. As a result, we bus about a third of
our students to schools where there is space.
To meet this pressing need, the CBE is planning the
construction of 12 new schools, three major modernizations and two replacement schools, all to open in
2016.
New K- Grade 4 schools for Panorama Hills, Tuscany,
Auburn Bay, New Brighton, Copperfield, and Evanston.
New Grades 5 – 9 schools for New Brighton–Copperfield, Evergreen, Mackenzie Towne, Saddle Ridge,
Rocky Ridge–Royal Oak.
Modernization of Bowness High School and Jack
James High School, and turning the former Harold W.
Riley school into an Aboriginal learning centre.
Replacement of Christine Meikle and Elbow Park
schools.
The Province is also building a new northeast high
school to open in 2016.
In addition, the Province announced Sept. 22 that
it would partner with the CBE to build four starter
schools. They will be built in phases to get students
into classes before the entire school is complete. It
also announced funding for modular classrooms for
Westgate School and for the planning of a new south
Calgary high school.
Funding for new schools, modernizations and modulars comes from the province and the CBE is very
grateful to the government for this investment in
education.
No job too small,

Play is more than how we learn, it’s who we are!
B
ehind the dangling red scarf comes a burst of song,
then out pops the beaming face of a mom who offers a sweetly pitched, “Peek-a-boo, I see you”. The
smiling baby below coo’s with delight and wiggles her
little arms and legs as if to say, “Do it again, Mom. Please
do it again!” Time stops in those moments and we find
ourselves immersed in this wonderful dance of play, so
instinctive and so enjoyable. Play is the language used
to explore our earliest experiences. Through play we
create our first relationships and understanding of the
world. As a child grows, play experiences help mark how
they view themselves and others. Play builds important
connections in a child’s brain and strengthens not only
the body, but the bonds we share with others. When 20
familiar faces sing your name around a bubble-filled
parachute you are somehow assured, “I Am Cause for
Celebration.” That patient

elevated! Colour, textures,
songs and sounds converge to entice learners at every stage of development
from birth to five years. Each of our seven level classes
are expertly crafted by child development professionals
to support the most age-appropriate learning experience for you and your child. Every activity and piece of
equipment is similarly designed to support the development of the child physically, socially and cognitively.
Each class will reveal something new for you and your
child to experience, as we help you become your child’s
best play partner. What will be constant are the smiling
faces, expert teaching approach and class that will become the cornerstone for many milestones and memories as you grow with us.
For over 35 years, Gymboree Play & Music has helped
parents and children explore the power of play and
how it impacts every part of a child’s development. Our
whole child approach assures that a child’s growing
body, mind and emotions are fully engaged and
supported. We know that children learn best when they
are encouraged to freely explore the things that bring
them the most joy. Our unique learning environment
and fun activities provide an ever changing range of
learning opportunities and challenges that place the
child at the centre of the experience. Our grown-ups
also find a place where they can play alongside their
child and learn about child development within a
special community of friends. We welcome you to slide,

CLOSET COLLECTORS
In North America it is a little known fact that nearly 90% of the population has some
type of money collection. This might be just a few pennies that are no longer being
minted or a coin that looks different. It could be something you were given as a tip
or it could be something over 100 years old. It may be something you picked out
of change or a one or two-dollar bill that you have kept. Perhaps it was something
inherited or leftover change from a vacation. Invariably these heirlooms or curiosities
are in a box in the attic, stuffed into an old trunk or suitcase, stored in a jar or album
or they may be rattling around the bottom of a sock drawer. Virtually all of us have
this sort of money somewhere in our home.
The Calgary Numismatic Society (CNS) is one of Canada’s oldest and most active
coin clubs. Founded in 1950, members of the CNS have been leaders in the study,
preservation and informing others on the value of their coins, paper money, tokens,
merchant script (e.g. Canadian Tire money), and medals, both military and civilian.
Numismatics is the study of money in all its forms so the CNS is more than just a
coin club. It may also be your introduction into the hobby of coin collecting or a way
of having questions about money answered without the worry of having to sell your
collection on the spot.
The CNS welcomes visitors and new members. We meet ten times a year on the fourth
Tuesday of the month (except July and August) at the Woodcreek Community Centre
1991 Woodcreek Dr. SW, Calgary. The meetings begin at 7:30 pm.
The CNS has an active youth program known as the Coinivores for those
age 6-17. This group meets the second Saturday of each month in the
Community Room of the Calgary Co-op at 8818 Macleod Tr. SE from 2-4 pm.

International Child’s Day
Will you be celebrating with your child?
Initially proclaimed in 1925 by the World Conference
for the Well-being of Children, a universal day to honour the children of the world has gone through several
incarnations over the decades before becoming internationally recognized in 1954. Observed on November
20, International Child’s Day marks the day on which the
United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in 1989.
In Canada, National Child’s Day was written in parliamentary law in 1993, to help promote awareness about
the 1989 convention which spells out the basic human
rights to which children under the age of 18 are entitled.
This November 20, the Calgary Public Library (CPL)
is celebrating children and encouraging play and literacy by holding a Colossal Play Date at CPL locations
throughout the city. Children aged three and older are
encouraged to bring an adult and drop in to various library locations from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
If you and your child (or grandchildren) aren’t able to
participate in the CPL events, take the opportunity to
celebrate your child and to help them embrace the love
of learning by reading to your youngster every day, but
especially on November 20. Reading aloud to children
is the single most important thing parents and caregivers can do to help children develop language and earlyliteracy skills -and to build a life-long love of reading!
Make it playful, make it fun, make it count.

Why do men’s clothes have buttons on the right while
women’s clothes have buttons on the left?
When buttons were invented, they were very expensive
and worn primarily by the rich. Since most people are righthanded, it is easier to push buttons on the right through
holes on the left. Because wealthy women were dressed
by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid’s right.
And that’s where women’s buttons have remained since.

Animal & Bylaw Services
Addressing the Problem…
Often times, when members of Animal & Bylaw Services or Alberta Health Services/Emergency Medical
Services respond to a call, time is of the essence.
When accessing a property from an alley, the difficulty comes when addresses are not clearly displayed
at the back of the home. It is even more difficult in
areas where houses are built in close proximity to one
another.
For your safety, please be aware that under the Community Standards Bylaw, your address must be clearly
displayed at the back of your property, if adjacent to
an alley or public walkway.
Calgary Fire, CPS and Animal & Bylaw Services appreciate your support and assistance.
Be Street Smart Safe
Do you know the rules of the road? Some people
might be surprised by what bylaws exist in Calgary to
ensure our streets are safe.
Recreation
Hockey nets, ski/snowboard/skateboard ramps and
basketball nets are not permitted on City streets,
even temporarily.
Obstruction
•Do not place electrical cords, hoses or chains over
a sidewalk.
•Do not place any material in lanes, streets, sidewalks
or City right-of-ways.
Vehicles
•Vehicles parked on driveways may not block sidewalks or boulevards
•Do not leave unregistered, uninsured vehicles on
City streets or lanes.*
•A vehicle must be operable and moved within 72,
hours or it may be considered abandoned and removed as such.*
*This regulation is a part of Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act
and is enforced by the Calgary Parking Authority.
The Calgary Police Service
responds to crime throughout the
city – but we need your help!
The Calgary Police Service (CPS) works with the community to
combat crime and social disorder wherever it occurs. Through
district and citywide crime management strategies, the Calgary Police Service constantly tracks crime and social disorder
issues and areas of concern, as well as the movement of crime.
Police operations and initiatives combat crime throughout
the city. Recent crime statistics show these initiatives have
had a positive impact on safety in the downtown. However,
as one hotspot is targeted, we are aware that some criminal
activity may move elsewhere. The Service constantly monitors hotspots and crime trends throughout Calgary, and
deploys resources where needed. We also work with communities throughout the city to address issues of concern to
Calgarians.
The CPS has launched a city-wide crime-mapping system,
which helps track the movement of crime, providing the citizens of Calgary and CPS members with an interactive capability to explore and map crime across the city. This map is
available to the public at www.calgarypolice.ca
In order for police to have an accurate picture of where
crime and social disorder is happening within the city, and
to allocate resources accordingly, it is vital that Calgarians
report all crime.
Non-emergencies can be reported to 403-266-1234. Always
call 911 to report a crime in progress.
Certain crimes can be quickly and easily reported online
at www.calgarypolice.ca. This includes lost property, theft,
damage or mischief to property, theft from vehicle or damage or mischief to vehicle. In all cases, the value must be
less than $5,000. Full details of what can be reported are on
our website.
Talk to your Community Liaison Officer
In each Calgary Police Service District, there are Community Resource Officers (CROs) who serve as the main community contact with residents. They are contact points for
community policing initiatives, and they can help you with
issues in your neighbourhood. In Wildwood your CLO is Cst.
Steve Gallant and he can be reached by email at pol4247@
calgarypolice.ca
The Calgary Police Service is committed to strengthening
community policing through effective community partnerships. Confronting violent crime, street-level crime and
social disorder starts with the appropriate education and
information strategies around such issues so we can work
together to ensure public safety.

Five Ways To Keep Yourself Motivated
To Work Out This Winter
By Paul Rescanski, Personal Trainer
For many people, once they have been working out
regularly for a while and the initial excitement starts
to wear off, finding the motivation to continue can
become a challenge. If this happens to you, here
are five suggestions that might help you keep your
fitness routine going, even on those days when you
don’t feel like doing anything at all.
Focus on how you will feel when you are finished the
workout, rather than how you feel before you get
started. Try to remember a time when you felt great
following a successful workout and concentrate on
re-living that feeling, especially on those days when
you just don’t feel like going at all.
Focus on the reasons you began your fitness program
in the first place. Think about what motivated you in
the beginning, the goals you set for yourself then,
and use those to help motivate you once again.
Avoid thinking about a single exercise in your program that you don’t enjoy doing and allowing that to
stop you from completing the rest of the routine. Instead, go to the gym and begin with anything except
the exercises you least enjoy. It’s amazing how often
just getting moving increases your energy level and
motivates you to do the things you enjoy the least.

Vary your program. This is called cross-training. For
example, if you usually run on the treadmill, choose
the exercise cycle or an elliptical instead. Even the
best programs get stale over time. Every six weeks, or
so, re-write your program to keep it fresh.
Find a reliable partner to work out with. Exercising
with a friend helps keep individuals accountable to
each other and increases the probability that one will
feel motivated on days when the other does not.

Orchids
There are many varieties of orchids but the most common is the Phalaenopsis or Moth Orchid that you see in
garden centres and floral departments.
I have gleaned this information from the American Orchid
Society, and I am happy to report that I have learned some
new things about orchids that I am pleased to share.
A major concern most home-gardeners encounter is an
orchid that never flowers again. Your orchid looks healthy
enough; the leaves are glossy green and firm. Surprisingly this indicates that your orchid is not getting enough
sunlight to flower. Rather, your orchid should have strong
upright growth but the leaves should be a yellowishgreen. This makes sense when you understand that when
a plant flowers it takes all the energy from the leaves and
transfers that energy into the production of flowers.
Another important component to growing healthy orchids is air. Orchids like a well-ventilated environment
and the roots need air or they will die. Gentle air movement – a ceiling fan or a swivel fan will imitate their natural environment.
How do you know when to water your orchid and how
do you know when your orchid is almost dry?
•The surface of the potting mixture will appear dry
•Clay pot feels dry
•Pot will feel lighter
Water your orchid until the water runs freely from the
drainage holes – this flushes out the salts that naturally
accumulate. Flush at least once a month.
Learn more at stmu.ca/grow
14500 Bannister Rd. SE | Calgary, AB
44
Orchids like to be fed weekly a quarter of the recommended 2020-20 formula that should contain little or no urea. When feeding your orchids it is important to remember to water first as the
fertilizer will burn the roots if applied to a dry potting mixture.
Provide the basic requirements of humidity, air movement, potting mixture, and light to your orchids and you
will be rewarded with healthy flowering plants.

Flying
with
your Pet
Many of us approach flying with our pets with a great
deal of fear and trepidation. People with allergies might
complain and pets might misbehave. Some airlines no
longer accept pets on flights as cargo or carry-on luggage; most airlines have blackout periods around holidays. The airline industry and international import/export laws are constantly changing rules and regulations.
If you intend on flying with your pet, research and having
a backup plan is essential, never assume the same rules
apply even months later.
Small pets traveling as hand baggage can check in with
you normally, then you carry them through the security
scanner, while the cage is screened on the belt. Phoning directly I was recently able to reserve premium seats
at the front of the plane with my dog, but I was warned
if anyone complained people and pets are consigned
to the back rows of the plane. I have also encountered
problems flying with large dogs as cargo when the cage
didn’t fit through the baggage door of a smaller plane.
Always know the dimensions of your cage and total
weight of the pet and cage when booking a flight.
Animals flying as cargo tend to be much more difficult
to coordinate. Pets flying in the cargo hold have to be
delivered to the airline’s cargo depot hours prior to flight
time. Cage requirements are strict. Pets must be able to
stand fully upright within the cage. Two bowls for food
and water must accompany the pet. Food requirements
depend on the length of the flight. You can teach your
dog to use one of the closed water bottles to avoid spillage in the cage. They resemble a hamster bottle and are
attached to the outside of the cage with a nozzle running into the cage. A leash and collar should also be attached to the cage. The cage should be clearly marked
and the doors secure. Make sure your pet is adequately
46
identified. Tattoo, microchip, and a collar with identification identify my pets. I’ll take no chances.
Try to only book your pet on a direct flight or keep to the
same carrier. There are companies which will take care
of all the hassle if you fly your pet around the globe. If
you’re taking a pet to Australia, New Zealand, or the British Isles, complicated and extensive vaccination protocols, blood tests, deworming protocols, and documentation make an animal travel broker absolutely necessary.
Preparations take several months.
Only a current rabies certificate is required to travel with
a cat or dog into the U.S.A., but airlines may still require
an additional recent health examination with a certificate to board your pet. Pets under twelve weeks of age,
too young to have a current rabies vaccine, can no longer enter the United States as of this summer.
Past studies have shown over-sedation to be the number
one killer of pets being flown. Only sedate your pet if you
fear his panic could result in injury. A non-sedated pet
may be scared, but he is better able to control his body’s
temperature, and less likely to aspirate vomit if air sick.
If you arrive at the airport and the outdoor temperature
at your destination or current location are too extreme
for your pet’s safety on the tarmac, the airline will refuse
to accept your pet as cargo. Have an alternative plan and
be flexible. Most major cities including Calgary have kennels that will pick up and deliver pets to flights.
As a professional worrier, I still find flying my furry children extremely stressful but adequate preparation has
allowed me to have many wonderfully uneventful journeys.

Hello Ward 14,
November is a month of remembrance. I hope you
have got your poppy ready to go.
I remember the first week of September. It was a
week that brought a rare amount of snow. The snow
brought broken branches, and a big mess to clean
up. I also remember the week ending with the clouds
breaking and the sun shining on the fourth edition of
my Ward 14 Communities BBQ.
If you haven’t already heard, the Ward 14 Communities
BBQ is a membership drive for Community Associations in Ward 14. Local sponsors donate funds to pay
for Community Association memberships that are given away for free at the event. People get a free burger,
beverage, and are entertained with music, City Department displays, and many other exhibitors. Donations to the Calgary Food Bank are also accepted.
tain Bike Alliance, and the Friends of Fish Creek presented the wonderful work they do. We also had all
the Ward 14 MLAs in attendance: Jonathan Denis, Jeff
Wilson, Rick Fraser, and Heather Forsyth.
The Community Associations of Ward 14 are what
the BBQ is all about, and without their support there
would be no point. Last year the fledgling Silverado
Community Association impressed everyone by
handing out 21 more memberships than in the year
prior. This year almost $8,000’s worth of memberships
were given away, and Willow Ridge added 56 members for the upcoming year. It is so great to see these
hardworking community groups growing in numbers.
No matter what their role, there are not enough words
to express how grateful I am to everyone who helped
make the Ward 14 Communities BBQ a big success.
So long until next month, and I hope to see you at
an even bigger and better Ward 14 Communities BBQ
next year.
Without the sponsors, City departments, exhibitors,
volunteers, and smiling faces who attend there would
be no BBQ. There is a newsletter column’s worth of
people to thank.
Southcentre Mall—as always—provided the location and donated funds. The Southcentre Safeway
donated beverages, and Deer Valley Calgary Co-op
provided hamburger buns. M&M Meat Shops of Willow Park provided the delicious burgers and grilled
them for us.
Many sponsors donated funds: Canyon Creek Toyota,
Jack Carter Chevrolet Cadillac Buick GMC, Southgate
Chevrolet Buick GMC, United Communities, and
Qualico Developments all chipped in again this year.
Progressive Waste Solutions, Shaw Communications,
Mattamy Homes, and ATB Financial wrote cheques for
the first time to help add members to Ward 14’s Community Associations and put money in their pockets.

Dietary fiber is a very important component of any
healthy diet. Technically, fiber refers to the portions of
plants that are edible but that resist digestion. Increased
dietary fiber has been shown to protect the body against
many diseases (including heart disease), to improve blood
sugar levels, and to prevent constipation. Fiber even aids
in weight management because it has fewer calories on a
volume basis than most other foods, and because it slows
digestion, meaning that you’ll feel satisfied longer after a
meal high in fiber. People who eat high-fiber meals may
also feel full faster and eat less. Most nutritionists recommend that the average adult consume 20 to 35 grams of
fiber per day, or 10 to 13 grams per 1,000 dietary calories.

There are two kinds of fiber—soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber dissolves in water to create a kind of gel that
expands in the stomach, coats it, and slows down digestion. This slower digestion time affects blood sugar levels
and is suspected of having a beneficial effect on insulin
sensitivity, which may help to prevent or control diabetes. Soluble fiber also lowers “bad” (LDL) cholesterol levels
because its presence interferes with the absorption of dietary cholesterol. Natural sources of soluble fiber include
oats and oatmeal, lentils, apples, oranges, strawberries,
pears, blueberries, nuts, flax seeds, beans, dried peas,
psyllium, celery, cucumber, and carrots.

Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water, and passes
through the digestive tract in pretty much its original
form. But insoluble fiber is also valuable to intestinal
health because it keeps the intestines clean. This helps to

prevent constipation and hemorrhoids, and has been associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
The bran layer of cereal products is the largest and most
common natural source of insoluble fiber. Whole wheat,
whole grains, nuts, wheat bran, barley, couscous, brown
rice, and bulgur are great examples. Fruits that contain
insoluble fiber (especially in their edible skins) include
cherries, raisins, grapes, rhubarb, oranges, melons, dates,
pineapples, prunes, and berries. Vegetables that contain insoluble fiber include turnips, beets, cucumbers,
onions, sprouts, celery, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels
sprouts, carrots, leafy greens, broccoli, green beans, tomatoes, eggplant, bell peppers and corn.
As is the case with almost all nutrients, it’s best to get
your recommended daily allowance of both soluble and
insoluble fiber through your normal diet. However, fiber supplements such as psyllium are also available for
those who have difficulty consuming enough fiber during the normal course of the day. While most dieticians
don’t believe you have to worry much about the “proper
balance” of soluble and insoluble fiber, a ratio of 1:3 (soluble to insoluble) is often cited as ideal.
If you’re accustomed to a diet that includes large
amounts of processed foods, there are several quick
and easy ways to add more fiber to your meals. Consider starting your day with oatmeal or a bran cereal.
Try snacking on raw vegetables or whole fruit (skip the
fruit juice). Replace your white bread with whole grain
breads. Eat “vegetarian” at least once a week. You’ll be
surprised at how these little changes add up!
