For the past 3 & 1/2 years
the Valley Hospital has been participating in a CMS Demonstration
Project which has allowed the hospital to share with doctors a portion
of savings generated through more
efficient care. Over that time the
hospital has been able to share approximately $1.3 million with 95
physicians across 10 specialties
including; Primary Care, Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine, Cardiology, GYN, General, Orthopedic
and Cardiothoracic Surgery.
Project, unless you indicate otherwise, you will be automatically transitioned into this new program. If
you did not participate in the prior
project you may still participate in
this new version. In fact the eligibility criteria have been extended, so
that any physician who has been
on staff as of April 1, 2012 and has
had at least 10 encounters with patients admitted overnight during
that year’s time may enroll.
In addition to Valley, 11 other hospitals (all in New Jersey) participated in the program. Overall the
program was considered successful by the doctors, hospitals and
CMS. This April 1 the Demonstration Project will come to a close in
order to make way for a new version of the program.

for any physician to lose any money. Also, there is no fee to the physician in order to participate.

participating in the Demonstration
For the hospital the biggest difference between the Demonstration Project and the bundled
payment model one project is that the hospital
must pay CMS a fee to participate. This fee will
escalate during the three year time span of the
project. For the first six months there will be no
fee. For the second six months the hospital will
have to give back to CMS one half of 1% of all

time. During the second year that panicles up to

ly raised and they will have to create more savings in order to achieve their reward. Still this is
an excellent opportunity to incentivize physicians
to rethink some practice patterns to be more consistent with the triple aim of providing better care
for individuals and better health for populations at
a reduced per capita cost.
If you would like more information or would
like to enroll in this program please contact me at
201 – 447 – 8015. I would be more than happy to
review the program with you in greater detail, and
help you identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary resource consumption.
In consideration of that CMS will allow
hospitals to not begin to make physician payments until the hospital has recouped its participation fee. For the physicians this means that if
the project goes along the bar will be continuous-

Sports Institute Presents Seminar on Concussion Awareness
Valley Neurosurgeon Anthony D’Ambrosio, M.D. and Steve Kennelly, Med, ATC, Assistant
Head Athletic Trainer for the NY Giants, were among the speakers at a concussion awareness seminar presented last month by The Valley Hospital Sports Institute.
The seminar included an audiovisual presentation of concussion recognition, treatment, and
management; discussion of second impact syndrome, post-concussion syndrome, and return to play
guidelines; a question and answer session; and information and resources on concussion awareness and management. Attendees received certificates of participation to meet state coaching
guidelines.
The Valley Hospital Sports Institute is an ImPACT testing provider. The ImPACT Concussion
Management Test is an innovative computerized evaluation system that assesses the effects and
severity of a concussion and helps determine when it is safe for an athlete to return to contact sports
following a concussion.
For more information about ImPACT testing, please call the Sports Institute at 201-447-8133.

HAITI: THE BODARIE
MISSION OUTREACH
By Marcus L. Williams, MD
Over this last Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend, The Valley Hospital was well represented on a medical mission outreach in Bodarie, Haiti, a remote mountain village in the country’s southeast corner and an arduous six hour
drive from Port-au-Prince. The Valley Hospital
also generously contributed medical supplies.
The outreach team included 22 volunteer
medical professionals and support staff from the
US and Canada who spent two full days providing free health services to the Bodarie School
students and area residents. As part of the team,
Dr. Marcus L. Williams, a cardiologist, and Dana
Velez, a cardiac catheterization laboratory nurse,
helped screen and treat 563 adults and students.
Among the adults, close to half suffered from hypertension and many had gastrointestinal issues
most likely caused by parasites.
There was also an assortment of rashes
and other skin ailments common to the Caribbean. While the children were somewhat healthier,
they too commonly suffered from skin conditions
and gastro intestinal complaints.
According to a Wall Street Journal article
from September, 2012, Haiti is among the 10
poorest countries in the world and is the poorest
in the Western Hemisphere. With a population of
about 10 million, 80 percent live on less than $2 a
day and have little to no access to health care.
And because of its remoteness, the Bodarie community is considered among the “poorest of the
world’s poor”. Indeed, many patients traveled
hours by foot along steep mountain paths to receive the free medical attention offered during the
mission outreach. Some were carried to the
school on mats by family members.
For the past three years, the Bodarie outreach has been jointly sponsored by Haitian Support and Hope Worldwide. After the January 2010
earthquake, these organizations came together in
partnership to serve needy Haitian communities.
While Hope Worldwide is a well-respected global
relief organization based out of Philadelphia, Haitian Support is a 100 percent volunteer-driven
charity whose mission is to provide free health
and education to rural Haitians. Among its several programs is the Bodarie School, which was
founded in 2005 and currently has 400 students
enrolled in grades K-7.
If you are interested in enlarging your life
by joining the mission outreach next January,
please contact Dr. Williams at:
[email protected]. And also for
those interested, Haitian Support offers a student
sponsorship program wherein a one-time $50 donation covers a student’s annual costs of education, a daily meal (food provided by the UN World
Food Programme), clean drinking water and annual medical examination. In return, you’ll receive
a photograph of your sponsored student. For
