Naples
Naples is located halfway
between two volcanic areas, the
volcano Mount Vesuvius and
the Phlegraean Fields.The city
is noted for its rich history, art,
culture and gastronomy and, in
the modern day, the historic
centre of the city is listed by
UNESCO as a World Heritage
Site. The metropolitan area of Naples is the second most populated in
Italy and one of the largest in all of Europe with around 3.8 million
people.
The whole history of Naples is based on the concept of welcoming
foreigners and of different cultures living side by side. The city's
enviable geographical position half-way down the Italian coast makes
it easy to reach from anywhere in the world.
The wonderful historical, artistic and archaeological heritage is an
intrinsic part of the city. At the same time, we mustn't forget its
contemporary creative nature which ensures the city always has some
new project on the go, some new goal, and plenty of new ideas.

Naples is a city on the sea, a place full of light yet with dark,
hidden foundations. It has a great cultural and artistic identity which
is stamped on the brow of its many museums, castles, churches,
squares, narrow streets and archaeological remains. It is a city in

and archaeological heritage which is an

It also looks at the role the various Council cultural and artistic organisations play, and gives
detailed information regarding the events organised by each of the services. The site provides
news and information on events organised by the many Municipal Libraries, the
Municipal Historical Archive, the Castel dell'Ovo, and also covers exhibitions which are
on in the city, opening times and addresses of the main museums, the Youth City in the Real
Albergo dei Poveri, and the Palazzo delle Arti di Napoli.
Since the site aims to publicise culture, theatre and concert listings are also included as well as
programmes for literary events. A capillary system of data collection means that people

Capri
Itineraries
The island of Capri has been inhabited by man since pre-historic times. Traces of primitive
man which were found in the caves and now conserved in the museums.
Both emperors Augustus and Tiberius chose Capri as their island retreat and, to this very day,
it is possible to admire the remains of the sumptuous villas built for their vacations on the
Isola Azzurra.
In the 1600’s a fortified charterhouse was built, the Charterhouse of St Giacomo, where the
monks produced perfumes, exploiting the essences extracted from the flowers growing on the
island of Capri.
The name Capri and the fame of the island was rapidly disseminated in the 1800’s, when
artists, writers, musicians and intellectuals participating in the Grand Tour “discovered” the
destination, finding on the isle inspiration for numerous works.
Capri, in addition to being blessed with an incredible natural beauty, boasts a history which
increases even further the appeal of the island.

Visitors to Capri are often surprised by the quantity and variety of walking routes on such a
small island. Along these pathways, tourists can choose to immerse themselves in the
authentic atmosphere of a coastal village, inhabited by fishermen and sailors; explore the
marine caves; walk through masses of sheer rock and peer over precipices which drop
dramatically into the sea; saunter through the patches of land cultivated by the country
dwellers, planted with olive groves and orchards of lemon and orange trees; or stroll through
the center of Capri with its ostentatiously luxurious boutiques, elegant hotels, artists studios,
churches, and the remains of Roman villas.
One of the magical things about Capri is that, even in peak season in August, when the roads
are crowded with tourists, one can always find a solitary spot in which to rest, or a hidden bay
where to take a swim in the crystal clear waters.

The Piazzetta is where the
town market was once held
and the epicentre of Island trading; the Piazzetta, has now been transformed, with the addition
of its exclusive bars, in to the “world’s sitting room”. Indeed, each and every day one can
order a coffee or aperitif in the company of famous politicians and intellectuals of world wide
repute.
The Piazzetta di Capri is the ideal starting point for any itinerary on the island of Capri, the
perfect place where to arrange to meet with walking companions, comfortably waiting for
their arrival under the large umbrellas, sipping a fresh drink or savoring a delicious
homemade ice cream.

Capri’s
Blue
Grotto is
known
throughout the
world for its
size, the
intense blue
tones of its
interior and
the magical
silvery light
which emanates from the objects immersed in its waters. Visitors to the Grotta Azzurra can
arrive either by bus or taxi from Anacapri; or by boat from Marina Grande in one of the tour
boats which stop at the entrance of the cave during the trip around the island. In order to enter
the Grotta Azzurra visitors climb aboard small rowing boats, with a capacity for two,
maximum three, passengers and, lying on the bottom of the boat, enter the low and narrow
mouth of the cave. Entrance to the cave is not possible in the presence of south westerly and
mistral winds.
The entrance to the Grotta Azzurra is formed by a small natural opening in the rocky wall,
roughly 2 meters wide and 2 meters high. The roof of the entrance is situated approximately 1
meter above the level of the sea and, for this reason, passengers are obliged to lie down in the
boat whilst passing in to the cave. The boatman sets down his rows and maneuvers the boat
inside with the aid of a chain attached to the vault of the entrance.
The interior is effused with magnificent blue tones. The vault, known as the Duomo Azzurro,
has an average height of 7 meters rising to 14 towards the back of cave. The erosion cavity is
approximately 60 meters long and up to 25 meters wide. The cave continues with the Galleria
dei Pilastri, three connecting branches which flow into the Sala dei Nomi, the name of which
was inspired by the numerous signatures left by visitors on the walls of the cave. Then there is
the Passaggio della Corrosione, and the Sala della Corrosione, the furthest accessible point.
The blue coloring of the Grotta Azzurra is created by the daylight which enters via an
underwater opening located immediately below the entrance to the cave. The light is filtered
by the water which absorbs the red tones, leaving only the blue ones to pass into the cave.

A second phenomenon creates the silver appearance of the objects immersed in the water:
given that the index of refraction of the bubbles of air which adhere to the surface of the
objects is different to that of the water, the light is allowed to egress.
It is believed that, in the Roman period, under the rule of Tiberius, the interior of the Grotta
Azzurra was used as a marine nymphaeum. There have been those who imagined the cave as
the habitat of Nereidi or of Sirens or believed it to be the realm of devils who bewitched all
who dared to enter.

St Giovanni del Toro. To see: Villa Rufolo, the Castle ruins, Palazzo Rufolo and Villa
Cimbrone.

In Naples you can enjoy the wonderful Mediterranean weather. The sun shines 250 days per
year. Even in the hot August days a light wind coming from the sea will accompany your
stay.
The average temperatures are between 25° C (77° F) and 31° C (88° F) in the summer. The
autumns are sometimes damp with some rainy days. In the winter the are less rainy days and
the temperatures are between 4° C (40° F) and 11° C (52° F), but you should not be surprised
if you will get a sunny day with 16° C (61° F) in the middle of Januar.

How to reach Naples
By car or bus
Come raggiungere il Villaggio con l’auto o il bus: per chi arriva da nord
autostrada Milano-Napoli, est Bari-Napoli o da sud Reggio Calabria-Napoli
bisogna prendere la tangenziale di Napoli obbligatoriamente direzione Pozzuoli
fare tutta la tangenziale fino all’uscita N°13 Cuma, proseguire sempre diritto,
passare il lago d’Averno, dopo 400 mt deviazione a destra per lavori in corso e
seguire indicazione licola sulla strada principale. Dopo 2 km, al bivio tenere la
sinistra seguendo sempre indicazioni Roma. Proseguire diritto sulla strada
provinciale 510 per circa 4 km, fino all’indicazione del villaggio che si troverà
a sinistra, svoltare, e dopo 200 mt a destra si trova l’ingresso al villaggio.
