The excellence of the Cruise Terminal
A
cruise Port leading the way, source of the Eastern
Mediterranean tourist itineraries. Venice Passenger
Terminal (VTP), managing the Venetian cruise terminal,
confirms its strategic role for the national and of the
entire Adriatic cruise industry, representing the excellence of a sector which, in spite of the international
recession, is in good shape.
The most recent CLIA data, confirm that cruisers
increased of 1% during the last year and of 44% from the
beginning of the economic crisis in 2008, demonstrating
the great productive capacity of the sector.
The economic impact of this industry in Europe has
reached 40 billion of euros in 2013, offering nearly 340.000
jobs. In Europe 6,36 million of passengers have chosen
this kind of holiday, with Italy maintaining its position as
the third source market with massive advantages for our
economy and for our cultural heritage.
Also the employment impact is extremely significant
with 103.000 global jobs in Italy, increasing of 3% in
comparison with 2013.
In order to seize the opportunities of this maket,
employing not less than 4300 direct and as many indirect
employees and generating a direct expenditure of 284
million of euro per year and 150 million of induced activities,
VTP has improved the port area from an infrastructural
point of view. In fact from this Spring Terminal 123, with
a surface of nearly 5000 sq. m., will start operation. The
terminal is on one level with an area of nearly 5,000 sq.m.,
dedicated to embarking and disembarking operations, and
is the only facility in the entire Marittima area that features

Venice, door for the Far East
its own garden – complete with Mediterranean scrub – to
be enjoyed by the public.
“The conversion to cruise use of this new terminal,
completed in record time; only three months for VTP’s
investment of 2m euros, including viability and tensile
structures of the surrounding areas”, says Sandro
Trevisanato, Chairman of VTP - “represents a new step
in the upgrading plan of the Marittima area that has been
transformed from an obsolete commercial port into a stateof-the-art passenger terminal in the space of a few years”.
A more and more international cruise port which
welcome cruisers coming from 181 different countries
with an increase of tourists coming from the Eastern
Countries (Russia) and from the Far East. In particular
the Chinese tourists that choose a cruise from Venice
are increasing. In 2013 the Worldwide Chinese cruisers
were just 570.000, while in 2015 they could be already
1 million, reaching 4,5 million within 2020. And the
Marittima Port is ready to reinforce its status to be a
Door for the Far East.

there is behind… The art of aperitif. “Each customer has his own identity, just as each

research for combinations, with creativity but also with an accurate knowledge of
the ingredients and how to use them, is what makes the Metropole wonderful drink

From 2012, Bruno presents and modernises aperitifs and unusual drinks: “The

Future Histories by Mark and Arseny Zhilyaev
At Casa dei Tre Oci in Giudecca island
F
rom May 9th to August 23rf, preview days during Biennale
opening on May 6,7 and 8, V-A-C Foundation presents Future Histories a dialogue exhibition where the artists stage a
wunderkammer in the making an imaginary future museum.
The artists play on the ambivalent nature of museums
as both wonderful places for discovery and learning, and
institutions for a colonialist categorisation and control of the
other as well as guardians of official history.
Mark Dion will present The Wonder Workshop, a functioning
workshop where a team of artists produce sculptures from 17th
century engravings of ‘exotic’ animals, for a future museum display.
In his new work Cradle of Humanity, Arseny Zhilyaev
depicts an unsettling image of a far off future: after mankind
had left the Earth, an interstellar corporation called
“Cradle of Humanity” set up a museum-reservation there,
dedicated to the origins of life and civilization. The museum
of imaginary future not only commemorates historic figures
and key events leading to the conquest of Space, but also offers
unique services, resurrecting client’s ancestors with newly
fashioned bodies through DNA research.
V-A-C is dedicated to the international presentation,
production and development of Russian contemporary Art
across a multitude of forms and within the framework of an
invigorated and informed educational programme.
It is deservedly considered as one of the key proponents in
opening out contemporary Russian culture to the wider world.

Jimmie Durham at Querini Foundation
Venice: Objects, Work and Tourism
From May 6 to September 20, 2015
Museum and Exhibitions
From Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am /
6 pm
Full price ticket: € 10; reduced € 8
O
n the occasion of the 56th International Art Exhibition of
the Venice Biennale, the Fondazione Querini Stampalia has
chosen to invite artist Jimmie Durham from Arkansas, born in
a Cherokee family. His works are mainly created with recycled
materials, and they represent an ironic attack to Western culture. Durham’s exhibition is held in Carlo Scarpa’s restored area,
the garden and the museum, creating a site-specific installation.
His research on the meaning of the materials and the objects
belonging to Venice tradition turns upside down the schemes
of its tourist and trade development. Durham’s journey back to
time bring him to ancient tastes and craftsmanship, also through
meetings with local artisans, seen as the survivals of their past
traditions.
It’s a project curated by Chiara Bertola, result a cooperation
between the Fondazione Querini Stampalia and Kurimanzutto,
Mexico city.

Pollock&Pollock at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection
Two not to be missed exhibitions tribute to Jackson and Charles Pollok
T
he Peggy Guggenheim Collection presents two
ground breaking exhibitions that pay tribute to
the brothers Jackson and Charles Pollock. Through
November 16, 2015 the museum hosts Jackson Pollock’s ‘Mural’: Energy Made Visible. The exhibition is
curated by David Anfam,
Senior Consulting Curator, Clyfford Still Museum,
Denver, and a preeminent
authority on Abstract Expressionism.This touring
exhibition focuses on
Jackson Pollock’s Mural
(1943, University of Iowa
Museum of Art, Iowa City),
following its 18-month
campaign of conservation
and cleaning at the Getty
Conservation
Institute,
Los Angeles. The immensely dynamic Mural is the
largest painting Pollock
created and it has exerted
a seismic impact on American art down to the present day. Commissioned
in the summer of 1943 by
Peggy Guggenheim for her
New York townhouse, Mural established a new sense of scale and audacity for
the Abstract Expressionist movement, anticipating the
classic ‘poured’ abstractions that Pollock would begin
four years later. Setting Mural into context, the selection includes Pollock’s newly-restored Alchemy, as well
as works by the artist’s wife Lee Krasner, David Smith
and Robert Motherwell.
Crucially, it also sheds
new light on Pollock’s
relationship to such photographers of action and
energy as Herbert Matter,
Barbara Morgan, Aaron
Siskind and Gjon Mili. The
exhibition travels to the
Deutsche Bank Kunsthalle, Berlin and then to the
Museo Picasso, Málaga.
Jackson Pollock’s ‘Mural’:
Energy Made Visible is organized by The University
of Iowa Museum of Art.
Together with this remarkable exhibition, the Peggy
Guggenheim Collection
presents Charles Pollock:
A Retrospective, the first
exhibition in Italy and the
first full retrospective of
the painting of Charles
Pollock, oldest brother
of Jackson Pollock. The
majority of the more than 120
paintings, sketches, drawings,
photographs, and documents,
some never before exhibited,
are loaned by the Charles Pollock Archives, Paris, thanks to
the artist’s widow and daughter,
Sylvia Winter Pollock and Francesca Pollock. A small number of
works by Jackson Pollock, Thomas Hart Benton and a unique
painting by Sanford Pollock complement Charles’s early years in
New York and Washington, shedding light on what amounted to
a family enterprise—studying
to be artists—of the Pollock
family before World War II. Additional loans come from other
members of the Pollock family,
from the Archives of American Art/Smithsonian Institution, the Addison Gallery of American Art, Phillips
Academy, Andover, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston,
the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington,
the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, the
O’Brien American Art Collection, Sewickley, the American Contemporary Art Gallery, Munich and several
private collections.

Spring at the Doge’s Palace
T
he Doge’s Palace, the
splendid residence at the
heart of St. Mark’s Square,
has always been considered a
symbol of Venice. Its interiors,
superbly decorated by artists
such as Titian, Veronese, Tiepolo and Tintoretto, allow a variety of fascinating tours: from the
enormous halls, the centre of
the Serenissima’s political life to
the Doge’s private rooms, and
from the famous prisons to the
light-filled loggias overlooking
the Square and the lagoon. And
now there are the Secret Itineraries (http://palazzoducale.
visitmuve.it), offering access to
some of the most evocative rooms for the history of the Palace, including the Torture Chamber and the Piombi (dungeons),
offering an interesting insight into the civil and political
life of the city, its organisation, and system of justice.
In the spring, a new and fascinating tour will be
inaugurated, The Doge’s hidden treasures, enabling
visitors to explore areas currently not included in the
usual visit: a new and appealing art-historical route
through the rooms reserved for the Doge in the wing
of the Palace next to the Basilica.

The fulcrum of the new tour will be the Chiesetta
and the Antichiesetta del Doge (the Doge’s chapel and
antechamber) which have been carefully restored in
recent years to bring the original decorative splendour
back to life. They are extraordinary sites and of notable
value both for the quality of their art and architecture
and for the historical interest associated with aspects
of the Doge’s worship and privacy.
The Doge’s Palace also offers itself as a centre for
exploring and considering more recent art.
One example is the current exhibition, Henri
Rousseau. Archaic candour (http://www.
mostrarousseau.it/), dedicated to one of the
central exponents of figurative art between
the late 19th century and the revolutionary
period of the avant-garde movements,
famous for the dreamlike moods, forests and
enchanting landscapes of his paintings. The
exhibition marks a first for Italy, and through
a lively sequence of thematic sections makes
it possible not only to admire some of his
most famous masterpieces, but also to
reconsider his importance in the light of
works painted by later artists.
The Chiesetta del Doge will be hosting, on
May 20th the third conferences to explore
the work of Douanier Rousseau, in which
scholars Valerio Terraroli, Laurence Des and
Flavio Fergonzi will be speaking about this
completely new and original artist.

Shoe-industry tradition and events at Villa Foscarini Rossi
Villa Foscarini Rossi is one of the many jewels to visit along the Riviera del Brenta.Very close to Stra city centre, it is a XVII
century architectural complex formed by two buildings: the Foresteria (guesthouse) which, after an accurate restoration,
hosts various events, and the Villa Padronale, where the Museo Rossimoda della Calzatura (Rossimoda Museum of the
Shoe) is located. In the Foresteria, the Salone degli Affreschi (frescoes’ hall) decorated by De Bruni in 1652 stands out and
it is here that cocktails, dinners, and meetings are hosted,
extending up to the front park and especially to the wide
portico. The Museum represents the cultural history of
the shoe industry tradition of the Riviera del Brenta: 1700
million of women’s shoes are here exhibited, created
since 1947 for the most prestigious international fashion
designers (Céline, Dior,
Fendi, Givenchy, Porsche,
Museo Rossimoda

hermae Abano Montegrotto are the most famous destination for preventive health services in Europe and are located in the neighbourhoods of Venice, in the middle of the Euganean Hills
Regional Park in the province of Padua. It is the
perfect location for a revitalising holiday made of
wellness, relax, nature, culture, art, wine and food.
More than 90 local hotels are equipped with
wellness centres and advanced thermal spas
specialised in mud therapy thanks to the antiinflammatory properties of the Euganean thermal
mud, the only one of its kind protected by a
European patent.
Spending a holiday at Thermae Abano
Montegrotto means forgetting about the stress of
everyday’s life in a peaceful and unique location
with 240 thermal swimming pools, where one can
relax while bathing in 37°C warm water and using
the thermal spa of each hotel.
A little corner of paradise between walled cities
and Medieval hamlets, Venetian villas and castles,
cloisters and places of worship, Thermae Abano
Montegrotto are close to the most important
Italian cities of art, like Venice and Verona. They
have been the land of thermal baths since Roman
times and nowadays it is still considered the
ideal place to prevent health issues because of
the several outdoor sport activities that can be
done in the hills, in the 68 km cycling ring that
surrounds them, in the local 3 golf courts and in

The Euganean thermal baths also stand out for
their wine and food products thanks to the fertile

he Redentore Feast is a deeply felt
celebration in Venice as it combines religion with entertainment, thanks
to the Saturday night phantasmagorical
fireworks’ display attracting thousands of
visitors: a kaleidoscope of shades, from
a game of light and colors on the inimitable setting in St. Mark’s Basin, lights up
the spires, domes and bell towers of the
city. At dusk, plenty of boats traditionally
decked out with flower festoons, colorful
balloons and brightly Chinese lamps begin to flock into both St. Mark’s Basin and
the Giudecca Canal. Awaiting for the firework display, which starts at 11.30 p.m.
and lasts late into the night, people enjoy
a sumptuous dinner of traditional Venetian specialties.
