Page 1 of 22 Hello Friends, Welcome to SciTech Hands On Museum’s Summer Adventure Camp! Arlene S. Hawks Executive Director We are excited to offer a wide range of adventures for your children to Imagine, Explore and Discover the world of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) this summer. Monday through Friday each week our Summer Adventure Camp will ignite the imagination of preschoolers through incoming 8th graders from June - July. There are morning sessions available from 9am-12pm and afternoon sessions from 1pm-4pm and campers will enjoy themes such as Storm Chasers, Jurassic Exploration, Aqua Engineers, Gamers Workshop and much more. No child should miss out on learning in such a fun environment which is why we offer many discounts and scholarships to those who qualify. And remember, they will also have access to our more than 150 interactive STEM exhibits which inspire education and imagination. So roll up your sleeves and put on your goggles for one of our BUZZZZZZZIEST camps. Week of June 13 Morning Science: Week of June 20 Morning Deep Sea Divers We all know there are many different species that live in the ocean, but how many only live at the bottom? Are they different from the living things that swim near the surface? Submerge your curiosity and discover how creatures of the deep have learned to adapt to these extreme habitats. Afternoon Furry Feathered Friends From fuzzy critters to feathered friends, explore the ecology of these fascinating creatures. Investigate mammals, birds, and the habitats where they can be found today. Discuss the reasons why some become threatened or endangered and discover ways we can help. Storm Chasers Twisters, blizzards, and lightening - oh my! Experience different types of weather and recreate your own storms in our weather lab. Discover and discuss the cyclical nature of water by exploring the water cycle and how it contributes to various forms of precipitation. This will prove to be a splash of a week! Afternoon Liquid Magic Chemistry Double, trouble, beaker bubble what makes up the matter we see every day? Explore the ins and outs of kitchen chemistry using safe household ingredients. Discover how scientists transform one substance to another and practice the science behind the magic. Preschool-PreK Sessions Technology: Week of June 27 Morning Into Space Uncover the secrets of the Solar System and become a NASA explorer as we investigate the planets and beyond. Discover the technology engineers use to visit other worlds and how scientists create the amazing images from our rovers and telescopes. Afternoon Scratch Jr. Come code with us! Express your creativity and practice your computer science skills using Scratch Jr., a visual programming language for kids. Learn how to write your own story or game using digital blocks and watch it come alive before your eyes. Grab your thinking cap and flex your engineering skills to solve the real world problems that architects face every day. Using the technology available to you, design and build different structures that can withstand the forces of nature! Afternoon Eco Engineers Humans make a significant impact on the environment around us. With over 7 billion people living today, there are many homes, business, roads, and other structures that have taken up habitats for animals. Learn how to go green and live as part of the ecosystem by designing and building sustainable, eco-friendly engineering marvels. Art: Week of July 18 Morning 3D Art Camp What is the difference between two and three dimensional art? Explore your creative side to make your art pop off the page using geometry. Our young Rembrandts will explore the works of different artists while creating their own 3D masterpieces throughout the week. Afternoon Messy Camp This camp calls for old clothes because “messy” will be our main ingredient. Explore your creative side by mixing, digging and sculpting with everyday compounds. Learn how the substances you find around your house can be combined safely and used in different ways. Be prepared to dig into lots of MESSY chemistry! Mathematics: Week of July 25 Morning Shapes and Fractals Grab your markers and your rulers! Tap into the endless possibilities of shapes and fractals by using spirographs, household items, and more. Investigate the patterns, ratios, and symmetry that goes into making snowflakes, seashells, and your favorite shapes. Afternoon Math Games from Around the World Do kids in Australia or Spain play math games like you and me? Are the strategies similar or completely different? Explore favorite games played by people from around the globe. Can you solve these logic puzzles? Toilet Training Policy Students entering Preschool or Pre-K in the fall must be toilet trained before registering for camp. SciTech Hands On Museum may dismiss a student from the summer camp program if the student is not toilet trained prior to attending camp. SciTech will not reimburse camp fees under these circumstances. Become a paleontologist for a week as we bring these ancient reptiles into modern day by recovering their fossil remains. Afternoon Reptile House From slick swimming amphibians to bug-eating reptile climbers, explore the amazing wonders of these animals we call cold blooded. Come and discover what makes these creatures so unique and important to our world. Technology: Week of June 27 Morning Batteries Fully Loaded Energy: It’s in our food, comes from the sun, and runs our cars. Explore what makes us move, discover what turns the lights on and reveal what keeps us warm. Uncover the secrets of energy, where we find it and where it goes. Afternoon Moon Mission: Apollo Join the ranks of engineers and scientists! Examine the technology NASA has designed to safely send someone to the Moon and beyond. Undertake the challenges that NASA scientists must overcome during space travel and on the surface of other worlds. Engineering: Week of July 11 Morning Aqua Engineers Transform into an aqua engineer and dive into the world of underwater structures. Explore the challenges that architects face while building dams, levees and bridges. Design solutions to create your own super structures. Afternoon Anchors Away It’s time to set sail! Your challenge is to engineer a boat to carry cargo along the Mississippi, but be careful! Your supplies are limited and your power source matters. This week you’ll learn what it takes to build the best boat for the job. Art: Week of July 18 Morning Great Western Expedition Explore new lands with SciTech just like Lewis and Clark! Keep a nature journal mapping out our trek using only the measuring tools available to you, a compass, and landmarks around us. Discover, examine and document the surroundings we find and the creatures we meet on our journey as we pave our way through the landscape. Afternoon Math Wiz From Spider webs and honeycombs, to seashells and flowers, Mathematics can be found everywhere in nature. Become a Math Wiz and explore how the growth of tree branches is related to a Nautilus shell, why each snowflake is unique, and use your skills to create pictures of nature. Mathematics: Week of July 25 Morning Fresh Squeezed Profits Turn fresh squeezed lemons into cash when you start your own lemonade business at SciTech! Summer is here, and there’s a demand for quality lemonade. We’re on the hunt for the best recipe in science and the best business in Aurora. Afternoon Tabletop Factory Tabletop games and cards are fun to play, but do you know what they all have in common? Explore how to use math to build winning strategies to your favorite games and to build your very own challenging tabletop game. Explore the anatomy of the human body and discover how our bones and muscles allow us to move, jump, run, and do amazing stunts. Afternoon Superhuman Did you know you hold unknown power? From superhuman strength to enduring extreme temperatures, learn how the body’s systems work together to confront threatening environments, viruses and toxins that we face everyday. Technology: Week of June 27 Morning SciTech Motor Speedway “Pop the hood” to engineer your own race car! Explore what makes cars faster, more powerful and aerodynamic. Choose your power source and race against your peers! But this class isn’t all about speed you’ll need to design a car that is eco-friendly, too. Afternoon Space Race Team up to explore the mysterious neighboring planets, Venus and Mars. Choose your destination and become an astrophysicist as you race to discover what lies on the surface of other worlds. Unearth the challenges of sending space robots to safely navigate this extraterrestrial terrain. Engineering: Week of July 11 Morning Robots to the Rescue Program your own robot like the pros! Investigate how robots are used to help in dangerous situations and rescue missions where humans cannot go. Become a programming apprentice to develop a robot that can self-navigate and complete other tasks for people. 6th Grade - 8th Grade Sessions Afternoon EARTHQUAKE Discover how the Earth’s surface moves and what devastating effects it can have on our cities. Learn about where these earthquakes can occur and tackle the challenge of engineering safer structures that can withstand the awesome power of seismic waves. Art: Week of July 18 Morning Music Makers Science is music to our ears! Discover what sound waves look like how they interact with different materials and environments to make music, and build your own instrument to play your favorite songs. Afternoon Gamers Workshop Roll up those sleeves and get to work in the gamer workshop. Here you’ll get to use software to design and edit your own PC video game. From the game controls and mechanics to the music and art work, you are responsible for completing this game from start to finish in one week. Are you up for the challenge? Mathematics: Week of July 25 Morning Endangered Species across the world hunt and scavenge for food all for one collective goal: to survive. Many species are struggling to adapt to our rapidly changing environment and are losing this fight. Learn how scientists use math to study environmental changes and help plants and animals win their fight for survival. Afternoon Puzzle Pizazz Challenge yourself this summer to learn how to master the problem solving and mathematics skills required to solve different types of puzzles and mazes. Become a puzzle master and use your creativity to create and design your own challenging puzzles for your friends and family to solve. Page 15 of 22 Camp Policies PRICING AND REGISTRATION Students and parents/guardians are expected to adhere to all SciTech camp and behavior policies. Camp session, no discount $200 additional camp sessions 10% off $180 with Membership $125 With Groupon 25% off $150 Early bird Discount 25% off $150 Late Registration (after June 1st) $230 2hr Before Care 7-9AM preschool - 1st grade only $100 per week 1hr Before Care 8-9am $50 per week Lunch Period 12pm-1pm free for students enrolled both morning and afternoon $50 per week 1hr After Care 4pm-5pm $50 per week 2hr After Care 7-9AM preschool - 1st grade only $100 per week All Discounts end after June 1st Registration Closes: • one week before camp begins (6/13, 6/20, 7/5, 711, 7/18) Camp Policies Page 16 of 22 Cancellation Policy • All registrations are FINAL upon receipt of payment, and refunds will NOT be issued to any parent/guardian who wishes to cancel registration. • Enrollment in individual sessions are final. Parents/guardians may not “switch” their child to another session after registration is finalized. • SciTech Hands On Museum reserves the right to cancel a camp session for any reason. If your camp session is cancelled by SciTech, SciTech will refund the full cost of the camp session. SciTech will NOT offer full or partial refunds in the event that a student is sick, absent, or was otherwise dismissed from the program. Additional Fees • Late pickup fee: $5 for every 5 minutes that a parent/guardian is late to pick up a student from camp or After Care. • Late Registration Fee (after June 1st): add $30 per session Class sizes • For 2nd grade through 8th grade students, class sizes are held to a maximum enrollment of 15 students per class. • For Preschool through 1st grade students, class sizes are held to a maximum enrollment of 12 students per class. • Please Note: Camp sessions and activities will be structured based on grade level and enrollment Toilet Trained Policy • Students entering Preschool or Pre-K in the fall must be toilet trained before registering for camp. SciTech Hands On Museum may dismiss a student from the summer camp program if the student is not toilet trained prior to attending camp. BEFORE CARE, AFTER CARE AND LUNCH PERIOD Enrollment • Parents/guardians may enroll their student in Before Care or After Care at the time of registration. If a parent/guardian would like to add Before Care or After Care after registration, they may do so by contacting the camp coordinator by phone prior to the start of camp. • Payment for Before Care and/or After Care must be received four (4) days prior to the first day of camp in which the student is enrolled. Camp Policies Page 17 of 22 Before Care/After Care: Children are supervised by SciTech staff on SciTech grounds during designated time that the student is enrolled in, Monday through Friday. Activities will be provided. Lunch Period: • Students enrolled in both morning and afternoon camp classes are automatically enrolled FREE of charge. • Students attending one morning OR one afternoon class may attend Lunch Period for all 5 days of camp for a fee, see pricing above. • Supervised by SciTech staff from 12PM to 1PM. Students will eat for the first half-hour and • • • • • will have supervised activity time for the second half-hour. Activity time may include exhibit exploration and/or other indoor activities. Students enrolled in Lunch Period must bring their own lunch, labeled clearly with their name, and may not leave the SciTech grounds. Meals WILL NOT be provided. SciTech camp staff and students will NOT be permitted to share or trade food with other students at any time. Any parent/guardian whose student arrives to Lunch Period without a lunch will be asked to drop off their student’s lunch to SciTech by 11:45AM. There will be a reserved peanut/nut free table in the lunch room. Please alert the camp coordinator if there are severe allergies that require additional accommodations. SUPPLIES AND SNACK • All necessary camp supplies are provided by SciTech. • A snack will be provided by SciTech during class each day, and students are welcome to • • • • • bring their own snack in a sealed container, with their name clearly labeled on the food container. Students with any special dietary needs must bring their own snack. Food and drink will not be permitted in the classrooms or STEAM LAB. One SciTech water bottle and one camp tee-shirt will be provided. Students should bring their SciTech water bottle, with their name clearly labeled on it, to camp every day. Students are required to bring a clean change of seasonally appropriate clothes to camp each day. Students are required to keep a backpack with them each day of camp. Camp Policies Page 18 of 22 DRESS CODE • Students are expected to wear closed toed and closed heel shoes to camp every day, crocks and • • • • • jellies are NOT acceptable footwear. All shorts must be knee length or longer. No tight or revealing clothing. Attire may not mimic or represent any illegal substances, profanity, drugs, alcohol, tobacco products or any kind of weapon. Camp students who do not wear the appropriate attire to camp may not be permitted to participate in some class activities, and may be sent home. SciTech will not be held liable for any injury that results in failure to wear appropriate attire to camps. ATTENDANCE POLICIES • Sending students home due to illness: If a student is deemed too ill to participate in camp, the parent/guardian will be notified and asked to take their student home for the remainder of the camp day or until symptom-free for 24 hours. • Arriving on time: If the student is going to be more than 10 minutes late, the parent/guardian must call to inform SciTech ahead of time. Students arriving 30 minutes late or more WILL NOT be permitted to attend class that day unless prior arrangements are made. • Weather and Safety Emergency and Cancellation: In the event that weather and/or safety conditions are too hazardous, SciTech reserves the right to cancel any and all camp activities. SciTech will notify parents/guardians of any weather and/or safety emergencies via phone and/or email. SciTech will not issue refunds due to weather cancellations. CHECK IN / CHECK OUT Adult Supervision: Students on SciTech grounds are required to be under adult supervision at all times. Parents/guardians may not leave their child unattended on SciTech grounds for any reason. Sign-out/pick-up: • Students will be signed out by an adult listed on a child’s approved pick up list with camp staff at the end of the child’s camp day. • Anyone picking up a student from camp will be required to present government• • • • issued identification such as State ID or driver’s license. Anyone picking up a student from camp must have their name and phone number listed on the registration. Camp staff must be notified prior to pick-up of any approved and/or listed adults who will be picking up their student either through the camp registration process or other written communication. Parent/guardian may add anyone to this list at any time by contacting the camp coordinator prior to pick-up via fax or email with parent/guardian signature. Camp students will not be allowed to leave the supervision of camp staff without being signed out by an adult listed on the approved pick up list. Camp Policies Page 20 of 22 MEDICATION Non-Emergency Medication Policy • Parents/guardians whose child is required to take prescription medication during the • • • • camp day must list that medication in the appropriate fields in the camp registration forms. Parents/guardians whose child is required to take prescription medication must also complete a medical log sheet detailing the name of the medication the child is taking, dosage information, and description of the pill. This will be done on the first day of camp during check-in prior to the student entering day one of class. Parents/guardians must store the medication in its original bottle and bring the medication to SciTech Summer Adventure Camps on the first day. All non-emergency medication will be secured in the education office, and medical logs will be kept by SciTech camp administrative staff. Students will be escorted by educational camp staff to the education office to take their medication as prescribed on the medication label. Emergency medication, such as Epipen, rescue inhaler, and insulin • SciTech should be notified through the registration if a student carries an emergency medication including Epipen, rescue inhaler, insulin, or others. • Emergency medication will be labeled clearly with the child’s name and will be kept in the First Aid kit controlled by the supervising Teacher/TA during the camp day. • Parents will be required to fill out a medical log sheet on the first day of camps for each prescription medication. PROHIBITED ITEMS • Students may not bring any illegal substances, drugs, alcohol, e-cigarettes, tobacco products, guns, knives, any kind weapon, or dangerous item(s) to the museum. • Students may also not bring any toys, food, candy, clothing, or any other paraphernalia that mimics or represents any illegal substances, drugs, alcohol, e-cigarettes, tobacco products, guns, knives, any kind of weapon, or dangerous item(s). • In the event that a student is found with any of these items listed, the student’s parent/ guardian(s) will be notified, the student will immediately be dismissed from the program, and legal authorities will be notified of any dangerous or illegal activity. • Refunds will not be issued if a student is dismissed from SciTech Summer Adventure Camps.
