WELCOME TO WINDSOR ESSEX PELEE ISLAND
What makes this region such a special place? Well, the reasons are different for everyone. From arts and culture to
gaming and nightlife, outdoor adventure to food and drink, we’re home to a virtually endless array of attractions,
activities and experiences. One thing’s for certain: we have plenty of reasons why you’ll love this place!
For a taste of colourful history, there’s nothing like the Canadian Club Brand Centre. Step back in time to the
days of Prohibition with a guided tour of this iconic landmark. Explore this grand heritage building, including the
basement Speakeasy room where Al Capone himself came to conduct business. Learn all about whisky making and
raise a glass to sample Canadian Club’s finest.
Gaming excitement and world-class entertainment are always a sure bet at Caesars Windsor. Ranked Canada’s
largest casino resort destination, Caesars Windsor is a nonstop whirlwind of action and thrills, with over 2,000 slots
and a full house of table games. Caesars Windsor is also home to The Colosseum, a 5,000-seat performance venue
hosting some of the biggest names in show business.
As one of the top birding destinations in North America, it’s no wonder nature lovers flock to our region by the
thousands. In fact, over 370 species of migratory birds have been spotted within our pristine natural sanctuaries like
Point Pelee National Park. Pedal or hike your way along our seemingly endless scenic waterfront and forest trails
throughout Windsor, Essex County and Pelee Island, or take a swing on one of our championship golf courses.
Make sure you come hungry because no visit here is complete without indulging in our local taste of place culinary
delights. From Asian to Arabic, Italian to Indian, a menu of authentic tastes spanning the globe awaits. Likewise,
we’re home to a thriving wine scene, with nearly 20 award-winning wineries situated throughout our region.
We could go on and on about all the reasons that make our region a must to visit. No matter what brings you here,
we think you’ll find your own special reasons to fall in love with Windsor Essex Pelee Island!

PROHIBITION
During the Prohibition era, the flow of Canadian booze across the Detroit River kept
American speakeasies and blind pigs well stocked. From 1920 to 1933, rum running reached
epic proportions with Windsor serving as a major smuggling point. It’s estimated that as much
as 75% of the alcohol consumed in America during this period was transported on waterways
between Windsor and Detroit.
Today, the “spirits” of this colourful era in history come alive at the Canadian Club Brand
Centre. Located on the waterfront in the heart of Olde Walkerville, the Canadian Club
Brand Centre offers tours designed to give you a vivid picture of Prohibition and key
figures such as Hiram Walker and Al Capone. The 1½ hour tour takes you back in time,
exploring Walker and his distilling empire, including his friendships with prominent
figures such as Henry Ford and Thomas Edison. Walk through the basement Speak
Easy Room, where meetings were held with Al Capone and The Purple Gang,
visit Hiram’s private Sampling
Room, view his collection of
Canadian art featuring works
from the Group of Seven and,
of course, enjoy a formal whisky
tasting of Canadian Club’s finest.
Take the Canadian Club Brand Centre tour and visit the Speakeasy room.
The Rum Runners Tour in Windsor is another fun and unique way to
experience Prohibition. You’ll be immersed in the Roaring Twenties as
you cruise on a private tour bus, visiting local rum running landmarks such
as speakeasies and mansions, while costumed actors share stories about
bootlegging and secret hideouts. The tour includes lunch and entertainment.

BLACK HISTORY
For many
American slaves,
Windsor Essex
offered what
they yearned for
most: a new life
of freedom. Our
region played a
pivotal role in the
Underground
Railroad
movement, helping
thousands escape
the brutality of
slavery. Beginning
in 1804, the
Underground Railroad movement worked to help slaves
flee from their owners. The Underground Railroad
consisted of a secretive network of sympathetic people
who helped hide and move slaves as far north as Canada
where they could live freely.
Throughout our region, the history and heritage of
this era is honoured and celebrated. Get a sense of the
heroic struggle endured by slaves – men, women, and
children – at the John Freeman Walls Historic Site
& Underground Railroad Museum. Step back in time
and into the paths, cabins, parks, and churches used by
slaves in their harrowing escape. See the inspiring exhibit
of artifacts at the Amherstburg Freedom Museum
highlighting the journey and many contributions of
African Canadians.

FORT MALDEN NATIONAL
HISTORIC SITE
For over 200 years, Fort Malden National Historic Site
of Canada has preserved our distinct history. The site
covers over 11 acres on the banks of the Detroit River
and includes remnants of the War of 1812 battlefield,
as well as restored and furnished 1819 brick barracks.
It has functioned as an army garrison, British Indian
Department post, dockyard in King’s Navy Yard, and was
the meeting place between First Nations Shawnee Chief
Tecumseh and British General Brock.
The War of 1812 galvanized the French and English
of Upper Canada in unity as they resisted American
forces trying to invade the British province. Battles were
fought relentlessly on land and water until the American
and the British governments finally signed the Treaty
of Ghent on Christmas Eve in 1814. Shawnee Chief
Tecumseh and the First Nations Confederacy allied with
the British forces and were promised the establishment
of a neutral Indian zone when the war ended, but this
pledge was broken when the Treaty of Ghent was signed.
HERITAGE SITES & MUSEUMS
Originally built by John and Amelia Park in 1842, the
John R. Park Homestead and Conservation Area is
a classical revival house that has been meticulously
restored. Visit this popular site to learn about the 19th
century farming and pioneer life through family-friendly
activities and hands-on experiences.
Antique, rare, and classic vehicles and other historical
artifacts are on display at the Canadian Transportation
Museum and Heritage Village. This pioneer village sits
on a 100-acre site, and even has a 1950s-style diner.
In the centre of Olde Walkerville, the majestic Willistead
Manor stands as one of this region’s most treasured
historic landmarks. Created by renowned architect Albert
Khan, the Manor was completed in 1906 for Edward
Chandler Walker, the second son of Hiram Walker.
Harkening back to 1904, Ford City in the Olde
Walkerville area is where Henry Ford’s iconic “letter
models” were first built in Canada. Originally, these
vehicles were assembled in small shops that didn’t even
have electricity, but with the rising popularity of Ford’s
cars it wasn’t long before a full-scale assembly operation
was set up. Explore this rich automotive legacy with one

GALLERIES
Located on Riverside Drive, the Art Gallery of Windsor
(AGW) is a beacon for art lovers with almost 4,000
pieces, including paintings, sculptures, and works on
paper. Artwork in the collection is both purchased and
donated, and undergoes the process of acquisition,
conservation, research, and exhibition.
Explore our historic distillery district and stop in at the
Canadian Club Brand Centre to learn all about Hiram
Walker and his distilling empire, including the days of Al
Capone and his Purple Gang. From there, it’s just a short
stroll to the Walkerville Brewery where you can enjoy
exceptional craft beer.
A Georgian-style house built just off the edge of the
Detroit River in 1812, the Maison Francois Baby House
played a special role in our history. The property was
once invaded by the American Army, and subsequently,
the British during the War of 1812. Today, it houses
permanent galleries on Windsor’s French roots, the War
of 1812, the Battle of Windsor and the history of the
home itself.
A 19th century courthouse and jail (‘gaol’ as it was
known), Mackenzie Hall still stands on Sandwich Street.
Built in 1855-56 by Alexander Mackenzie, the second
Prime Minister of Canada, it was the county courthouse
until 1963. Self-guided and group-led tours
are available.
Making its grand debut this year, the
Chimczuk Museum is Windsor’s premier
museum destination. At 11,000-squarefeet it is a cultural attraction featuring
permanent exhibits showcasing the
history and development of the
Windsor Essex area. The site also
offers a state-of-the-art Children’s
Gallery and Learning Space with
opportunities for hands-on exploration
for both the young and young at heart,
two galleries for travelling and temporary
exhibitions, and a gift shop with unique
souvenirs.
Located in a restored Michigan Central Railroad station,
the historic Gibson Gallery in Amherstburg is itself
a work-of-art. Bevelled glass fanlights, decorative
clay trim, and dressed stone windowsills highlight the
late-1800s Romanesque architecture. There’s even a
caboose filled with railroad artifacts and memorabilia.
The gallery exhibits the work of local and travelling
artists, offers arts and crafts lessons,
three needle art guilds, and an
artisan shop.
SYMPHONY
& THEATRE
The award-winning Windsor
Symphony Orchestra (WSO) has
been striking up masterful performances since the
1940s. Known for its versatility as much as its virtuosity,
the WSO offers year-round performances, featuring
orchestral standards, toddler and parent-friendly shows,
and massive productions with hundreds of performers.
Windsor Light Music Theatre is a renowned volunteerbased theatrical organization. For over 60
years, Windsor Light has brought cheering
audiences to their feet with professionalcalibre “Broadway-style” live theatrical
performances.
For nearly two decades, Kingsville
Migration Hall has been an entertainment
and cultural hub in Essex County.
Located in the charming Town of Kingsville,
this venue offers a wide variety of both professional
and community performances, including concerts,
comedians, and theatrical productions.

BIRDING
POINT PELEE NATIONAL PARK
Why do ten’s of thousands of birders flock here each
year? There are all kinds of feathered reasons. In fact, our
region is a world-renowned birding destination, and one
of the top “hot spots” in North America. Each spring and
fall, over 380 species of rare and migratory birds make
their way to the natural sanctuary of our marshes, ponds,
lakes, rivers, beaches, and shorelines at various birding
sites across the region.
Point Pelee National Park, at our southern tip, is
Canada’s warbler capital and ranks in the top 10 birding
destinations across North America. Over 80% of bird
species recorded in Ontario have been seen and heard
here. Witnessing migration at Point Pelee National
Park is something you won’t soon forget, with forests,
savannahs, and marshlands providing the perfect
backdrop for the flurry of colourful birds. From herons
to sparrows and sandpipers to warblers, you never know
what you’ll find at Point Pelee. For birding at its best,
don’t miss the popular Festival of Birds each April/May,
drawing thousands of enthusiasts from around the world.
The diverse habitats of Hillman Marsh Conservation
Area attract and support marsh, shore and field birds
such as herons, egrets, terns, songbirds and ducks
as well as a nesting pair of Bald Eagles. In total, over
one hundred species of birds use Hillman Marsh as
a migration stop-over. A leisurely walk with several
rest stops and a stop at the viewing tower takes
approximately one hour. In September, the Festival of
Hawks at Holiday Beach Conservation Area draws big
crowds, with rare and amazing bird sightings, as well
as dragonfly hikes, butterfly tagging, and more. You
can watch hawks, vultures, eagles,
falcons, and other spectacular
birds of prey as they stop
along their migration
route. And no trip
here is complete
without a visit to the
world-renowned Jack
Miner Migratory
Bird Sanctuary
in Kingsville.

300,000 people a year can’t be wrong. Add your
footprints along the beach to Canada’s most southerly
point. Picnic along the pristine 20-kilometre Lake Erie
beach while the waves gently roll ashore. Stroll along
the Marsh Boardwalk or paddle through its meandering
waters. Lined with cattails, the half-mile boardwalk puts
you in the heart of marsh wildlife. Climb to the top of
the three-story observation tower for a panoramic view
of the grand marsh oasis. Exploring this pristine natural
sanctuary is a breeze thanks to a new 5-km cycling/
hiking trail. Stretching from gate to tip, the trail offers
spectacular sights with every step.
Have your binoculars ready to catch a glimpse of
a Knocking Woodpecker or any of the other 380
species of birds recorded in Point Pelee’s lush tangle
of Carolinian forest. During the Monarch Butterfly
Migration in September, be mesmerized by thousands
of butterflies fluttering all around. And don’t forget to
look down because more than 27 species of reptiles, 20
species of amphibians, and 50 species of spiders also call
Point Pelee National Park home.
GOLF
As Canada’s most southerly region, our climate allows at
least four more weeks (April - November) of playtime

challenging golf courses, including greens crafted by
legendary designers Donald Ross and Thomas McBroom.
Several of our impeccable courses have hosted Canadian

WINDSOR
With balmy summers and mild winters, Windsor has the
unique honour of being south (yes, south!) of our U.S.
neighbour, Detroit. From this small corner of Canada,
we have participated in the creation of the automobile,
the War of 1812, both World Wars, the storied past of
Prohibition, and the freedom revolution that abolished
slavery. Windsor offers more than 2,400 acres of green
space in 210 parks. Our riverfront is home to miles of
walking paths, spectacular views, and extraordinary water
features, as well as one of the world’s most unique outdoor
sculpture gardens.
