welcome to
Eddie Francis
Tom Bain
It is my pleasure to welcome you
to Windsor Essex and Pelee Island
along with the delights and
hospitality of this southernmost
region of Canada.
Welcome to our communities of
Essex County! The County culture
sees its towns and villages
celebrate everything that they have
to offer. Whether it’s fresh off the
farm or our vineyards, or if it comes
from our history books or heritage,
I’m certain you will want to discover
all that Essex County has to offer.
As you will quickly discover, we offer
such a variety of attractions and
activities that it would be
impossible to list all of them in this
letter of greeting or indeed, in this
entire Visitors Guide.
But we are honoured to offer you, our guests, the riches of an area
which is the oldest non-native settlement west of Montréal, the
comforts of Canada’s most moderate climate and, perhaps above and
beyond all, the friendliest people in our country.
We have unparalleled shopping, gaming, hospitality, entertainment
and natural attractions, coupled with ease of access to a region
which is within one day’s travel of half the population of the North
American continent.
You’ll enjoy our famous nature preserves, such as Point Pelee
National Park, our world-class wineries and our sporting
opportunities. Immerse yourself in more than 250 years of colourful
history – from our earliest settlements to our pivotal influence in The
War of 1812, from our anti-slavery activities supporting The
Underground Railroad to our pioneering industrial endeavours –
particularly in the automotive field – and so much more.
We are confident that your first experience with us will not be your last,
and we assure you of a noteworthy time whenever you choose
Windsor Essex and Pelee Island for entertainment, relaxation and
many new and memorable adventures.
THE PERFECT GETAWAY
Again, welcome.

evident in LaSalle, and despite being
one of the largest communities in

almost 30,000, the town retains its
charm and traditional warmth.

Belle River is often referred to as the
Muskie Capital of the World. Only on
our lake can you catch Walleye, Perch,
Smallmouth Bass and Muskie. Ice
fishing in the winter provides more
opportunity to catch these great fish.
Lakeshore is also home to the John

Lighthouse Cove boasts the second
oldest lighthouse in the Province of
Ontario. The communities of Comber
and Maidstone have interesting
museums focusing on our rich heritage.
Originally, the Town of LaSalle
encompassed just an area on the bank
of the Detroit River – what is known as
the "Nautical Mile." Today the Town of
LaSalle has expanded well beyond that
waterfront location and is bordered by
the Town of Amherstburg to the south,
the town of Tecumseh to the east and
the City of Windsor to the north.
Interested in summer festivals? In July,
the Business Improvement Area

eco-tourism –
cycling/scuba
The great outdoors has much to offer –
especially in our eco-friendly region.
Let our plants, wildlife, paths and parks
cater to the nature lover and outdoor
adventurer in you. With literally
thousands of acres of green space and
more than 200 parks woven into our
communities and neighbourhoods, there
are at least that many reasons to get
outside. Walk, run, blade or bike the
5 km. of riverfront along the Detroit
River. Traverse the urban, suburban or
naturalized parkland of the Ganatchio
Trail, an 8 km. walking/ biking trail that
reaches from the City of Windsor into
the Town of Tecumseh. Cyclists love this
region for its diversity, not to mention
the unique adventures that span various
communities and even stretch as far
as Pelee Island. Bring the whole family
and enjoy an overnight adventure
tourism bike ride that weaves you
through the trees and under the stars
on Pelee Island. Be sure to join one

birding
Our region is one of the best ”hot
spots” in North America for birding.
Marshes, ponds, lakes, rivers,
lagoons, beaches and shorelines
not only create the perfect
migratory elements for over 370
species of birds in fall and spring,
but they offer outstanding birdwatching opportunities for
observers old and new.
Over 80% of bird species recorded
in Ontario have been seen and
heard in Point Pelee National Park
– an exceptional birding site right
under your binoculars. Heed the
song of the warbler at Point Pelee
– Canada’s warbler capital. Our
birds are spreading their wings
and sharpening their tunes to add
to your amazing birding story!
We are dedicated to protecting
our earth, from sky to soil, and
Hillman Marsh and Holiday Beach
Conservation areas are living proof
of that dedication. Hillman Marsh is
an epicentre for education and field
study, drawing people (and wildlife!)
from across the continent. Hawks,
vultures, eagles, falcons and other
spectacular birds of prey flock and
stop at Holiday Beach Conservation
while en route to and from warmer
climates. The Prothonotary Warbler
is a regular ”nester” at this site as
well. Incredibly, there have been
more than 15 species of hawks
viewed and counted by expert
birders from the Hawk Tower at
this Conservation Area.
There is adventure below the water
just waiting for you to plunge in and
explore. The Great Lakes are full of
sunken shipwreck treasures. Dive into
the Pelee Passage off the shore of
Leamington, where more than fifty
shipwrecks create a diver’s dream
escape. Take a breath, dive in and
envelop yourself in adventure!
Biking in Essex County

In fact, there are 11 Conservation
Areas in our eco-minded region
that are hoping you visit so you
can stop, look and listen to the
astonishing wildlife that never
ceases to flourish. A birding
adventure just wouldn’t be
complete without a visit to Jack
Miner Bird Sanctuary. Jack Miner
established his homestead as
a bird sanctuary in 1904 – an
incredible feat then and a
miraculous feat now considering
more than 100 years have passed,
and geese and other birds are
still calling Jack Miner’s ‘home’
during migration.
The Ojibway Prairie Complex,
located in the southwest corner
of Windsor, is the largest protected
tallgrass prairie and oak savanna in
Ontario. Here you will see and hear
the Tufted Titmouse, the Redbellied and Hairy Woodpecker,
the Rose-breasted Grosbeak,
the Scarlet Tanager and the Indigo
Bunting – to list a few! Parking
and admission is free!
Thousands of observers travel to
our region annually to attend the
Festival of Birds (May) at Point
Pelee National Park and the
Festival of Hawks (September) at
Holiday Beach Conservation Area.
These family-friendly festivals
include not only rare and amazing
bird sightings but also dragonfly
hikes, crafts, butterfly tagging and
much, much more.
Point Pelee National Park ranks
as one of the top 10 birding
destinations in North America.
Ruby-Throated Hummingbird
fishing
Where will you cast your line?
Windsor Essex Pelee Island is the
place to be for the angler. Muskie,
walleye, bass and steelhead swim
fat and plentiful in Lake St. Clair,
Lake Erie and the Detroit River. Sail
or motor your own boat into one of
the many area docks or let one of
our experienced charters or fishing
guides help fill your fish buckets.
Known as the #1 destination in the
Great Lakes, Lake Erie’s western
basin is brimming with walleye,
smallmouth bass, yellow perch and
rainbow trout. As there are four main
bodies of water to fish from, our area
is truly an incredible location. And,
you don’t need a boat to fulfill your
fishing needs. There are waterside
parks and government docks lined
with anglers patiently
awaiting that sweet
first tug on
the line.
Take advantage of license-free
fishing during the annual Ontario
Family Fishing Weekends held in July
and February (Canadian residents
only). Indeed, our unique climate
allows for fishing across the seasons.
Take our bait and cross ‘fish for a day’
off your list of things to do on your
next vacation! Windsor Essex Pelee
Island’s freshwater fish are here for
you. Hold up your catch and smile for
the photo that will hang on your wall
with pride – a lasting memory for the
angler in you.
cottages and
campgrounds
Why not rent a cottage for that
home-away-from-home feel on your
outdoor adventure? Our region has
over forty cottage choices, including
on-the-water locations. Wake up to
the aroma of freshly brewed coffee
and the sound of Lake Erie waves
gently lapping on the shore outside
a picture-perfect view.
Walk, ride or drive onto one of two
ferries to Pelee Island, a mere
45-minutes across the lake from the
mainland to the Island. Satiate your
want for a true getaway! Snuggle in
warm quilts, laze on a front porch and
read that novel you’ve been meaning
to start. We know how to make your
camping experience amazing. With over
100-acres in campgrounds, spacious
sites decked out with electricity and
sewer hook-ups, lakes, recreation
facilities and many activity programs,
camping in Windsor Essex Pelee Island
is yet another superb way to pen that
chapter on ‘My Summer Vacation.’
Take the rugged road and set up a tent
or roll in your RV at a campground in
our region. Immerse yourself in lush
trees and let the sweet scent of
campfire get in your hair and on your
clothes. Do you have a scary story to
share beneath the starry sky? Are
your fingers ready to get sticky with
s’mores? Windsor Essex Pelee Island
meets all your outdoor adventure
needs – and helps you live stories
you’ll be sharing for generations.
In the Town of Lakeshore, Belle River has long been known
as the “Muskie Capital of the World” due to the
extremely large numbers of muskies caught there and is
home to many muskie tournaments.

At a time when the drinking of alcohol
was banned in the United States,
the Detroit River’s flow to Windsor,
Ontario became quite a powerful
current. The early twentieth century
saw rum-running come alive between
two countries as the state of Michigan
jumped on the Prohibition bandwagon, and all those looking to get
some alcohol jumped on a boat or
ran through a tunnel to get to
Windsor where alcohol could be
manufactured and exported. Windsor
was in the thick of Prohibition as well,
but even though they couldn’t drink
alcohol, they could still manufacture
and export it. People on both sides of
the border swallowed up this loophole
in Prohibition. Up to 75% of alcohol
that was consumed during Prohibition
was transported via the waterways
between Windsor and Detroit.

black history
Perhaps the most heart wrenching
and soul lifting aspect of our past is
the true stories of the Southwestern
Ontario Underground Railroad.
Freedom was an untouchable reality
for millions of Black Africans who from
the 1440s to the 1880s were shipped
to the Americas to work in the sugar
plantation industry. For the less
than 15 million who survived the
devastating conditions on the ships,
and the extremely harsh living
conditions, disease, exhaustion and
slave-owner cruelty in the Americas,
an undeniable and critical quest for
freedom could not remain suppressed.
African slaves began a dramatic
protest against their southern
American owners in a movement
known as the Underground Railroad.
While there wasn’t an actual ‘railroad’
there was an international uprising
that, through a highly secretive
network, moved slaves as far North
as Canada where they could live as
free citizens. The movement began

in Columbia, Pennsylvania in 1804
by Quaker abolitionist Levi Coffin
who used railroad terminology in
an attempt to confuse slave catchers
as he assisted escaped slaves in their
freedom fight. ‘Conductors,’ or persons
leading the ‘passengers’ (escaped
slaves) from ‘station’ (safe house)
to station would eventually end at a
‘terminal’ – a place where they could
finally be free.
especially Colchester, Amherstburg
and Sandwich. As the Underground
Railroad was a beginning place in
these areas, many slaves began
their journey at the ‘North Star,’ as
Canada was known in Amherstburg
and Sandwich. Still others decided
to call these towns ‘home’ and
settled here to start a new life
and create a family.
The Southwestern
Ontario Underground
Railroad Tour ‘The Road
That Led To Freedom’
enables you to step into
the paths, the cabins,
the parks, the churches
and the ‘terminals’ that
freedom-seekers used in
their perilous escape from
slavery. Windsor Essex
and Chatham-Kent were
major entry points for slaves as they
fled from the Americas. Freedomseeking slaves poured into Essex
County from the southern United
States during the 1840s. Some settled

John Freeman Walls built this

this site became a designated historic
site after John’s great-great grandson
Dr. Bryan Walls culminated four years
of research in his book, ‘The Road
That Led To Somewhere.’ Highlights
of this site include a false bottom

slaves, and the Walls family cemetery,
where John and Jane Walls and their

The Nazrey African Methodist

For many slaves escaping from the
United States via Detroit into Canada
in the small town of Sandwich, the
Sandwich First Baptist Church was the
first stop on the Underground Railway.
Hundreds of slaves crossed the
Detroit River and found sanctuary in
this church that began as a small log
cabin, but was rebuilt in the 1850s as
the church that still stands today. In
exchange for a meal and a safe haven,
free and fugitive slaves supplied and
helped build the church. A hole on
either side of the floor in the church
allowed fugitive slaves to escape
underground via a small tunnel which
ran to the river’s edge.
Black history blooms to life at the
North America Black Historical
Museum in Amherstburg, Ontario.
The heritage sites on the Underground
Railroad tour continue throughout
Chatham-Kent. Extraordinary stories
abound in this area and ripple from
a tumultuous, terrifying past into a
proud, triumphant present. The early
1800s brought five Black families to
settle along McGregor’s Creek in a
small town called Chatham. It was
known then as ‘The Forks.’ By 1850,
the village flourished as a haven for
runaway slaves, and its population
became one-third Black.
Escaped slave Josiah Henson
purchased property in 1841 and
quickly became known as a leader
or “conductor’ in the Underground
Railroad in Southwestern Ontario.
Henson was a slave in Kentucky for
forty-one years. He escaped with his
family using the Underground Railroad
in 1830. Dresden became the location
where this dream would come to
fruition. In Dresden, he helped
establish the Dawn Settlement –
a safe refuge for former slaves,
comprised mostly of Black settlers.
Henson co-founded the British
American Institute, one of Canada’s
first vocational schools. Author Harriet
Beecher Stowe’s novel, Uncle Tom’s
Cabin, was written using Henson’s
memoirs as reference. This made
Henson’s name synonymous with
‘Uncle Tom.’
This historic site in Dresden,
Uncle Tom’s Cabin, consists of
an Underground Railroad gallery,
two cemeteries and three historic
buildings. Tours for individuals
and families as well as schools
are available.

Former slave owner turned abolitionist,
Rev. William King, purchased 9,000
acres (36km2) of land in 1849 on
the Elgin Settlement (crown land),
and made it a terminus on the
Underground Railroad as well as
a Black settlement. Known for its
excellent education system, ‘Buxton’

Canada includes a museum complex

surrounding communities
What surrounds us defines us. It follows that the
communities in our region add a rich texture to our
cultural and business landscape. Amherstburg, Essex,
Kingsville, Leamington, LaSalle, Lakeshore, Tecumseh,
Pelee Island, Chatham-Kent, Windsor and Detroit
make up a diverse set of squares that define a unique
identity to the colourful quilt of centres, towns and
cities that surround us.
Perhaps a bed and breakfast on a Lake Erie shore
exemplifies your idea of the ideal meeting place. We’ve
got it. Maybe you’d rather be surrounded by tall trees
than tall buildings. We’ve got that too. Would you rather
hear butterfly wings flutter and chirping birds wake you
from a peaceful slumber than a phone ring or an alarm
clamor? We understand completely. The truth is – our
region is as special as you are. So come and let us create
the perfect business-scape for you and your team.
Each community presents a wealth of gems that
extend through the business sector. From museums
and homesteads rich with compelling heritage and
world-famous history to fresh open-air markets and
distinctive shopping, choosing Windsor Essex Pelee
Island as your place to do business means you’ll
accomplish much more than success in your meetings
or at your convention - you will enrich and enliven
your cultural self as well.

Windsor-Essex and AUTO21:
driving global leadership
in research and engineering
GET SCHOOLED IN THE D
Dr. Anne Snowdon, whose research focuses on child restraints and safety systems,
is a Project Leader for Canada’s AUTO21 Network of Centres of Excellence.
Her work is also funded by CIHR, Canada’s national institutes for health
research. In her role, she exemplifies the ways in which Windsor-Essex remains
a global powerhouse for advanced engineering. “It’s exciting that the region is
diversifying,”she says, “but the automotive sector remains a huge, vibrant part
of our economy.” And with the University of Windsor’s new $112 million Centre
for Engineering Innovation set to open in 2012, along with the region’s other
major research institutes, she adds, “We’re solidly positioned to continue leading
this global market sector.” “For companies interested in engineering excellence,”
she adds, “this is the place to be.”
