Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
When I was in early grade school at St. Joseph’s in Seattle, I heard the story of
Tarcisius, a young Roman Christian who was martyred while taking Holy
Communion to the sick members of his community. I was enthralled by the story of a
teenager who would give his life to bring Jesus to those who hungered for him but could
not get to church to receive him.
Perhaps it was one of the seeds of my own vocation to the priesthood.
From the middle ages on, only priests could touch the host, and so only priests could
take communion to the sick. But when Vatican II restored the ancient rite of communion
in the hand (the ordinary way in which we receive bread) the practice of taking
communion to the sick was again restored to Catholics who were properly instructed in
this extraordinary ministry.
It is one of the distinguishing marks of Catholicism (especially as opposed to our
Protestant brothers) that the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in our tabernacles to be
food for the sick and shut-ins.
Today, when so many parishes are sharing a pastor, this role has become ever more
urgent in the Church. In our own parish where I am often overwhelmed by the myriad
tasks which now fall on the pastor, the Legion of Mary has been stalwart in bringing
communion once a week to those who are home-bound. But the number of these
special extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist is also diminishing, and we need many
new volunteers to take their place.
