Painting Norway: Nikolai Astrup
(see p.1)
Please note Format measurements
in inches, where given in this catalogue,
are presented using the standard
US method (width by height).
A profoundly sensitive painter and
innovative printmaker, Nikolai Astrup
became one of Norway’s most
renowned twentieth-century artists.
Together with Edvard Munch, he
expanded the artistic possibilities
of the woodcut, consciously blurring
the boundaries between prints and
paintings. Best known for his luminous
paintings of midsummer nights,
Astrup evoked in his landscapes the
atmosphere and mood characteristic
of the changing seasons in his home
region of Jølster. It was there that he
spent almost his entire life, first in
his father’s parsonage, then at the
farmstead he built on the opposite
side of the lake, now known as
‘Astruptunet’. Featuring over a hundred
oil paintings and prints, including works
from private collections never exhibited
before, this book accompanies the first
UK exhibition of Astrup’s unique and
extraordinary work.

Sting is an English musician, singersongwriter, multi-instrumentalist,
activist, actor and philanthropist.
Michael Peppiatt is an internationally
acclaimed art historian, curator,
and writer. His most recent book is
Francis Bacon In Your Blood: A Memoir.
As an ‘Englishman in New York’ since 1985, the artist Bill
Jacklin has concentrated on painting ‘urban portraits’ of the
city in all its guises – from large-scale canvases of crowds in
flux to intimate moments in Seurat-like etchings. A member
of the Royal Academy in London, Jacklin has participated
in numerous one-man and group exhibitions around the
world from the 1970s until today. This stunning, beautifully
illustrated book, the first full treatment of Jacklin’s New York
paintings, will be a significant contribution to the study of
this internationally acclaimed artist, and serve as a lasting
celebration of the magnificence of New York City.

art historian and specialist in twentiethcentury European art. Elizabeth Cowling
is Professor Emeritus of History of Art and
Honorary Fellow at Edinburgh University.
Kenneth Silver is Professor of Art History
and Director of Undergraduate Studies in
the Institute of French Studies at New York
University. Dominique H. Vasseur is the
former Chief Curator and Curator of
European Art at the Columbus Museum
of Art. Ann Bremner is an arts writer and
editor based in Columbus, Ohio.
This fully illustrated catalogue highlights one of the most
important periods in the history of modern art, examining the
work produced by Picasso in Paris during the tumultuous years
of World War I. Focusing on the artist’s oeuvre from 1912 to
1924, when he utilised both Cubist and classical modes in his
art, Picasso’s shifts in style became a means of not repeating,
in his words, ‘the same vision, the same technique, the same
formula’. The catalogue also includes the work of Picasso’s
peers and friends, artists who were likewise exploring themes
relevant to the difficult times in which they lived. This elegantly
designed book is essential reading for all those interested in
Picasso’s work and the dramatic and innovative period of art
history during the Great War.

Mathematics is not just the product of lone geniuses
dreaming up ideas remote from everyday life: real social,
political and cultural problems drive developments in
the subject, and the work of mathematical practitioners
surrounds us everywhere we look. This lavishly illustrated
book accompanies the Science Museum’s landmark new
Mathematics: The David and Claudia Harding Gallery due
to open in autumn 2016. It includes an absorbing series
of essays by world-leading experts in the history and
modern practice of mathematics, alongside vivid accounts
of mathematical work underpinning some of our most
fundamental human concerns, from life and death to war
and peace, money, trade, beauty and our attempts to
control nature’s most elemental forces. Mathematics uses
the world-class collections of the Science Museum to offer a
vivid vision of the people behind 400 years of mathematical
practice, driven by problems that affect us all.

During the golden age of railway
travel in the 1920s and 1930s The Flying
Scotsman was synonymous with speed
and the highest standards of comfort
and service. The Flying Scotsman:
Speed, Style, Service tells the story
of this remarkable train and how it has
become a part of British popular culture,
featuring in films, TV documentaries,
children’s toys, books, music and
artworks. While the name ‘Flying
Scotsman’ is well known to many, the
complete story of the train and its place
in British social history has been untold
until now. Combining engaging text
with a wealth of images – including
much previously unpublished material
– this book seeks to shed new light on
this legend of the railways.
Published to accompany a Media
Space exhibition at the Science Museum
in spring 2016, this stunning catalogue
explores the work of this pioneer of
photography. It examines how Talbot’s
invention of photography in the 1830s
evolved to establish its artistic, scientific
and industrial possibilities. Also
explored are the relationships within
the network of photographers who
gravitated towards Talbot’s process,
each of whom took photography into
different territory. Featuring 100 highquality reproductions of Talbot’s work,
Dawn of the Photograph is a testament
to his magical and industrial visions,
ranging from the delicate capture of
natural specimens to his more staged
and functional ambitions for photography
as a means of mass production.

The Brontës of Haworth were a prodigiously imaginative
literary family. From the earliest manuscripts of Charlotte,
Branwell, Emily and Anne – written with a quill pen in a
minuscule hand designed to mimic the printed page –
to explosive novels, such as Wuthering Heights and
Jane Eyre, written in adulthood by Emily and Charlotte,
the family’s writings continue to fascinate. This elegantly
designed, fully illustrated publication provides an intimate
portrait of a singular family of writers through the
manuscripts, rare printed books, personal documents,
and private letters preserved in the Brontë collection of
the Morgan Library & Museum, one of the world’s finest.
It accompanies a major exhibition at the Morgan from
9 September 2016 to 2 January 2017.

Guido Cagnacci (1601–1663)
was one of the most original and
idiosyncratic painters in seventeenthcentury Italy. Trained in Bologna and
Rome, he led an extraordinary life,
between Romagna, Venice and Vienna.
This book examines Cagnacci’s life
and his eccentric work, from his early
religious paintings to the later canvases
showing ancient heroines and allegorical
and biblical figures, often in defiantly
sensual attitudes. This is the first book in
English devoted to Cagnacci in almost
30 years and provides an overview of
his astonishing artistic achievements.

Gardens: The Cleveland
Museum of Art
Delicate jellyfish and anemones,
octopus, tentacled squid, and bizarrelooking soft-bodied sea creatures were
meticulously recreated in glass by father
and son artists Leopold and Rudolf
Blaschka in the late nineteenth century.
Renowned for their beauty and exacting
detail, the Blaschka invertebrate models
were commissioned by universities
and museums throughout the world as
teaching models for students of natural
science and marine life. Illustrated
here for the first time with breathtaking
new photography are 60 of the most
exquisite models from the exceptional
collection of Harvard University’s
Museum of Comparative Zoology.
Bursting with intricate details and
stunning photography, this elegantly
designed book is a must for all those
interested in the history of science and
the quiet beauty of the natural world.
The vast collections of animals, minerals
and plants at the Harvard Museum of
Natural History are among the oldest
in the country, dating back to the 1700s.
The Rarest of the Rare, available for
the first time in paperback, tells the
fascinating stories behind the extinct
butterflies, rare birds, lost plants,
dazzling meteorites and other scientific
and historic specimens that fill the
museum’s halls. You’ll learn about the
painting that catches Audubon in a
shameful lie, the sand dollar collected
by Darwin during the voyage of the
Beagle, and dozens of other treasures
in this surprising, informative and often
amusing tour of the natural world.

The Cleveland Museum of Art is located in a parklike
setting with other cultural and educational institutions.
Built on land given by one of the museum’s major donors,
the museum opened to the public in 1916. The foreground
of this majestic white marble structure, however, was a
long-neglected parcel of land with a small lake owned by
the City of Cleveland. In the 1920s the Garden Club of
Cleveland took on the job of transforming this blighted
plot into a garden everyone could enjoy. In this book,
Mary Hoerner presents the history of the Fine Arts Garden,
and Jeffrey Strean discusses the development of the
museum’s grounds since the 1930s as well as plans for
the future. This lavishly illustrated and beautifully designed
book presents a new aspect of the history of this
distinguished institution.

Originally designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1954, the
Bachman-Wilson House now resides, fully restored, in
the grounds of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art
in Bentonville, Arkansas. It is an example of what Wright
called ‘Usonian’ architecture, a distinctly American and
democratic style of residential architecture he developed
during the Great Depression to be within the reach of the
average middle-class family, without sacrificing quality. The
house was originally situated in New Jersey but, after being
threatened by repeated flooding, the entire structure was
dismantled and transported to Crystal Bridges. Meticulously
reconstructed from the original plans, the house opened to
the public in the fall of 2015. This fully illustrated publication
highlights this classic structure, and further cements the
architectural legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright.

combined legacy of famed art collector and industrialist Henry
Clay Frick and his daughter Helen. This lively and colourful
guide tells the story of Frick’s early collecting and his daughter’s
interest in continuing his mission to purchase great art and

thirteenth century to the present, are displayed at The Frick

This book offers the first comprehensive survey of the art
of the Cayman Islands as seen through highlights from the
National Gallery’s permanent collection. The collection traces
a historical and stylistic journey that begins with the visionary
markings of intuitive artists such as Gladwyn ‘Miss Lassie’
Bush, and moves on to the work of the early realist painters
who sought to capture the picturesque tropical island
paradise before concluding with the more critically engaged,
multi-disciplinary work that the islands’ contemporary artists
are generating. This overview, which also functions as the
gallery’s first collection guide, features essays on the history
of art, the story of the National Gallery and its collection,
and works by over 70 artists.

Bo Bartlett is one of the foremost
American artists in a generation that
has redefined realist painting for our
time. His complex multi-layered narrative
paintings are personal, often epic
explorations of family, his roots in the
American South, the sea, beauty, life
and death. This long-awaited mid-career
retrospective is published to help
celebrate the opening of the new
Bo Bartlett Center in his hometown of
Columbus, Georgia. The exquisitely
designed volume is the first full
publication to document Bartlett’s
evolution as an artist, his personal
creative process and to place his work
in the context of the long-standing
tradition of American realism.
Edvard Munch was a genius, singular
amongst artists; his paintings are
haunting, beautiful, groundbreaking.
The Munch Museum, opened in 1963,
manages an extensive, remarkable
collection that covers the entire range
of Munch’s oeuvre. It also possesses
sketches, letters, notebooks,
photographs and other documents
that present a multi-faceted view of
Munch’s life and work. In this book,
the museum’s staff provide a unique
insight into one of the greats.

Singapore’s arts and culture scene has grown tremendously
in the last couple of decades. Its latest impressive addition,
National Gallery Singapore, positions Singapore as an
international hub for Southeast Asian visual arts. In the
heart of the Civic District, the Gallery occupies the neoclassical City Hall and former Supreme Court, two buildings
that have been focal points for many important events in
the history of Singapore. Architects for the new Gallery
were challenged to create a distinct identity for the art space
whilst simultaneously celebrating the architectural, cultural
and historical significance of the sites. With a distinctive
metal-and-glass canopy roof linking the two monuments,
the Gallery’s setting also makes it the largest visual arts
institution in Singapore.

‘Has the makings of a contemporary

Edward Parker has been
photographing and writing about
trees and environmental issues for
over 25 years. His more than 30
books include Ancient Trees: Trees
That Live for a Thousand Years and
Photographing Trees, and he has
twice been highly commended in

Brian Muelaner worked for the
National Trust for nearly three
decades managing its woodlands
and parklands containing ancient
trees, initially as Regional Forester
in Cornwall and latterly as the Trust’s
national Ancient Tree Adviser
covering all Trust properties.
Arguably the most famous bridge in the world, Tower
Bridge was built in the late nineteenth century and
immediately acclaimed as a feat of Victorian engineering.
Designed to ease road traffic while maintaining river access,
it was constructed with giant moveable roadways that lift up
for passing ships. It quickly became known as the ‘Wonder
Bridge’. Celebrating this truly iconic London structure, a
focal point of the city and the River Thames, this official
guidebook tells the story of the bridge and its design with
a range of stunning historical and contemporary photos.

Ancient Trees of the National Trust is a love letter to
Britain’s venerable trees. The co-authors are well known for
their extensive work with ancient trees and historic woodland.
The book is a celebration of the ancient and historic trees
that enhance 40 National Trust properties, including the yew
under which it is believed the Magna Carta was sealed 800
years ago, Isaac Newton’s apple tree, and a row of massive
chestnut trees that are said to originate from nuts salvaged
from the Spanish Armada. Featuring stunning photography
by Edward Parker, this enchanting book explores the historical
and cultural associations of ancient trees and their biological
importance, as well as their sheer beauty.

Peter St Clair-Erskine, 7th Earl
of Rosslyn, inherited Rosslyn
Chapel on his succession to the
earldom in 1977. Together with his
wife Helen, Countess of Rosslyn,
he established the Rosslyn Chapel
Trust in 1996 to oversee a major
and ongoing programme of
restoration.
Lincoln Castle is one of the most important buildings in
the East Midlands and one of the grandest Norman castles
in England. It is unusual in having two keeps and a complete
curtain wall, and its highly strategic position has given
it continuing historical importance. The site of battles and
sieges, and some complicated medieval wheeling and
dealing, it was also a major centre of administration and
justice, containing a former prison building and a working
Crown Court. It houses one of the four surviving exemplars
from 1215 of that crucial historical document, Magna Carta.
26
The glorious fifteenth-century Rosslyn Chapel is one of
Scotland’s most extraordinary architectural masterpieces.
Founded by Sir William St Clair, third Prince of Orkney,
and inspired by the great Gothic cathedrals he had seen
in France, the chapel has remained in the ownership of the
St Clair family for over 550 years. Built entirely of stone, its
many carvings embrace Christian imagery, representations
of the pagan Green Man and the earliest recorded stone
carving of the medieval Dance of Death. Written by the
Earl and Countess of Rosslyn, this beautifully illustrated
book explores the fascinating and intertwined histories of
the St Clair family and their remarkable family chapel.

Dr Jonathan Foyle
is an architectural historian,
broadcaster, consultant and
advocate for heritage sites.
Coventry is a phoenix of a building; a living, breathing
reminder of the enduring power of humanity. Reduced to
rubble during the Blitz, it was rebuilt according to modern
aesthetics, an immovable concrete structure with swooping
steel beams and fractured glass windows. The cathedral
has since been described as Britain’s favourite twentiethcentury building and it’s easy to see why it is so beloved.
Basil Spence, the architect, seamlessly brought together
the old and the new, incorporating the ruins into the new
design. Inside, you’ll find Graham Sutherland’s magnificent
tapestry of Christ in Majesty, John Piper’s great Baptistery
window and – most importantly – the enduring presence
of believers, drawn to Coventry as a place of pilgrimage.
28
One thousand three hundred years ago Lichfield Cathedral
stood at the centre of the kingdom of Mercia. One of Britain’s
oldest cathedral foundations, it stands today as an abiding
symbol of the impact Christianity has had on our heritage.
Its history is as rich and intricate as its decoration: from St
Chad’s anointment as bishop of Mercia in 669, through an era
as a shrine-church of martyrs; and from the damage wrought
during the bloody English Civil War to its restoration to
medieval glory by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the nineteenth
century. This stunningly illustrated book, by well-known
architectural historian Dr Jonathan Foyle, re-establishes
Lichfield’s place among the great English cathedrals.

Curator at the Victoria and Albert

Bristol Cathedral is something of a hidden gem, with the
twelfth-century monastery still visible in the Chapter House
and Abbey Gatehouse. Pevsner wrote that the medieval hall
church at the east end was ‘superior to anything else built in
England, and indeed Europe at the same time’. The cathedral
has many other exquisite points of interest, including glass,
memorials, roof vaults, rampant monkeys and ammonites;
and the Anglo-Saxon ‘Harrowing of Hell’ stone is proof of an
ancient Christian presence in the area. This guidebook offers
a concise history of the building followed by a tour of its
highlights, and is beautifully illustrated throughout.
30
St Paul’s Cathedral was designed by Christopher Wren
in the late seventeenth century as an elegant white space
delineated by light and shadow. From the mid-nineteenth
century parts of the interior were transformed by the addition
of a magnificent series of mosaics. The most stunning
examples are the mosaics in the quire and apse designed
by the artist William Blake Richmond, which sparkle in vibrant
colours and gold. This beautifully illustrated guide explores
the story behind the cathedral’s mosaics – from the
discussions surrounding their creation, to their artistic
influences and the biblical themes that they depict from
a uniquely Victorian perspective.

Chawton House Library
Greyfriars Kirk, set in its famous
and atmospheric kirkyard, was the
first ecclesiastical building in Edinburgh
following the Scottish Reformation
of 1560, and is still remarkable for the
impressive simplicity of its architecture.
During a rich and turbulent history,
now described and illustrated in the
museum within the kirk, the building
saw the signing of the National
Covenant in 1638; was partially
destroyed in an explosion and then
rebuilt for two separate congregations;
and today serves as both an active
Church of Scotland community and
a popular venue for artistic and
educational events. This lavishly
illustrated short guide outlines the
story of both kirk and kirkyard, including
perhaps its most famous memorial,
to Greyfriars Bobby.
The Augustinian friary in Adare is
700 years old, now a living monument
as St Nicholas Church. Pilgrims come
here, as they have come here over the
centuries, to stay awhile in the calm
monastic atmosphere and soak in the
sense of sacred, ancient space. It is
almost the same today as it was at its
conception – unspoiled, unscathed
and sensitively restored to capture
the simplicity and spirituality of the
Augustinian way of life. This souvenir
guide is a loving snapshot of the
medieval ecclesial site. With specially
commissioned photography lighting
up the rich story, it provides a wonderful
accompaniment to a modern-day site
of pilgrimage.

a Fellow of the Society of
Antiquaries and past President
of the Bibliographical Society.
Dr Henry Dyson is Keeper of
Fine Art at Durham University and
a Fellow of Grey College, Durham.
Magdalen College is one of the
most beautiful of the Oxford Colleges.
Founded in 1458, it was built in the
extensive grounds of the suppressed
Hospital of St John the Baptist, outside
the medieval city walls. Over the
centuries the College has built and
rebuilt itself, developing an impressive
physical presence, from the Old Kitchen
– a remnant of the Hospital – to its late
medieval Cloister, Chapel and Hall, the
Great Tower, the elegant eighteenthcentury New Building, St Swithun’s
Quad, up to the new Library in Longwall
Quad, finished in 2016. This fascinating
book presents the College’s rich and
complicated academic, architectural
and personal history, and highlights
the features that can be seen by
visitors today.
SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES BACKLIST
In 1998 Durham University owned 2,000 works of art; as
of today it has over 6,000. For the first time a publication
covers the whole art collection, from its conception in 1832
to the modern day. It is full of important twentieth-century
and contemporary works of art, accumulated with the help
of the colleges and displayed throughout the University.
This book provides valuable insight into the paintings, prints
and sculptures contained within the University, as well as
explaining the history and development of the collection,
interweaving it expertly with the history of the University itself.
