Greg Laemmle, president of Laemmle Theatres, and Jason Tolleson of the Serrano Development Group delivered a presentation of project details. The presentation included renderings of the proposed project in Newhall that includes a Laemmle Theatre, mixed use retail, housing space and a public parking structure. The average time it takes for a councilmember to become mayor pro tem after his or her first election is 31 months, but Boydston has served almost twice that and has never been selected. Green Light The City of Santa Clarita is considering paying for a parking structure for the theatre and retail outlets at an approximate cost of $9-10 million. When asked if the city-built parking structure was not approved, would the company still proceed with the building of the theatre, Laemmle said it would be. He indicated that not all of their other theatres have ideal parking situations, but customers are resourceful in finding places to park, especially in evening hours and weekends. “In the entire history of Santa Clarita, no elected city council member has been denied the privilege of serving as mayor pro tem during their first term,” resident Steve Petzold said. “Including his interim term, TimBen has served a cumulative 59 months. continued on page 3 Local Honey, Locally Owned www.BennettHoney.com Honey.com o "I believe there is a somewhat adequate supply of parking, between the library, the Metrolink station, and surface streets within a half-mile radius of the theatre," said Laemmle. ccoont ntinue ued ed on n page page agge 3 continued continued on page 3 2 SANTA CLARITA GAZETTE & FREE CLASSIFIEDS Dec 4 - Dec 10, 2015 VOTED AV’S BEST BREAKFAST YEAR AFTER YEAR NOW OPEN! When asked in a subsequent email if the project would move forward without those additional funds, Laemmle explained why the issue is a deal breaker. It read: With regard to the $3.5 million subsidy, we would not be able to move ahead with the project without receipt of funds in that amount, absent some sort of guaranteed proof that construction costs would be substantially lower than currently estimated. And if you’ve even (sic) done construction, you know that costs are rarely lower than estimated. Ultimately, the $3.5M is needed to bring the net cost down to a figure that is commercially reasonable. Without those funds, we would have difficulty securing bank financing for the project. We would need to find additional equity investors, which would be difficult given the relatively low rate of return coupled with the risk associated with developing a single use facility. The alternative is that we would have to saddle the operating entity with too high of a rent, and we would then likely take a pass on the project for fear that it would be too likely to operate at a loss. The Next Mayor Pro Tem? Laemmle believes the economic advantage of moving forward speaks for itself. This is the time to recognize his extraordinary service and leadership in the community.” Laemmle’s email read: For some, these statistics beg the question: what is stopping the city council from choosing Boydston for the position? City staff and consultants have carefully looked over the numbers on this project ... and I believe that they will ultimately provide the council and the public with the numbers to show that the subsidy for the theatre plus the cost to build and own the parking structure ultimately represent a smart and prudent investment. With city funds required to complete the theatre, the proposed project has set off somewhat of a firestorm in the ranks of local pundits. There are arguments on both sides, some saying the city has no business subsidizing for-profit companies, while others claim it would be money well spent, with great benefit to the Santa Clarita community. Stay tuned, as this will undoubtedly bring a swarm of heated opinions, much like the chloride and billboard controversies of the past. Anyone who has attended a city council meeting recently may have noticed Boydston’s outspoken nature and determination to make his opinions known – which often differ from that of his fellow council members – but whether this is related to his being repeatedly “passed over” for the position of mayor pro tem remains unknown. in support of electing him mayor pro tem, why won’t they come out and state their reasons why?” asked Doug Sutton, publisher of the Santa Clarita Gazette. “It seems they’re afraid to create more conflict, when they should be willing to come forward with their concerns for the benefit of the community.” Mayor Marsha McLean and Council Members Dante Acosta and Laurene Weste did not return requests for comment as of press time Wednesday. For some, these statistics beg the question: what is stopping the city council from choosing Boydston for the position? When asked if he believes that Boydston would serve the City of Santa Clarita well if selected as the next mayor pro tem, current Mayor Pro Tem Bob Kellar responded, “It doesn’t take rocket science to know that there are concerns,” but didn’t elaborate. “If the other council members are not Kellar said he couldn’t speak for the other members of the council, but offered some insight into how he will approach the upcoming vote next week. “I try to make all my decisions, I try to predicate them on the best information (available), whether it’s having to do with who’s going to be mayor or whether or not we’re going to support a project,” Kellar said. “I try my best to do what I think the right thing is for our community.” continued on page 8 GET DEBT HELP NOW! IN EONS GONE BY … The chief engineer of AAA called for the construction of a state-wide series of connecting super roads. He called the plan “freeways.” With alcoholism running rampant, the Prohibitionist movement was huge in the late 19th century. The leader of the abstinence movement was Kansas Governor John St. John. He and some investors purchased the old Lyons Station at present-day Sierra Highway and Newhall Avenue, along with 10,000 acres. Their dream was to form a dry (no alcohol) community in the SCV — no easy task when there were far more saloons than churches and schools. The idea went nowhere, not even among hardened Prohibitionists. Seems a home or business owner agreed to forfeit their holdings if ANYONE was caught drinking alcohol on their property. ,I IDPHGVXSHUVWDU:LOOLDP6+DUWZDVDOLYHWRGD\KH·GEH 151. Hart’s birthday is December 6, but, there has been some debate as to the year. It’s generally agreed to be 1864 and TwoGun Bill was born in Newburgh, New York. Not too many people know that Hart was engaged to his alleged soul mate and WHILE she was out, wedding dress shopping, the movie star allegedly got a teenage actress, Winifred Westover, pregnant back at their hotel. Hart married Winny, discovered she WASN’T pregnant, fought heavily, made up, had a baby, then split up. When Hart died in 1946, his son, Bill Jr., sued the county for his massive estate. Junior lost. It went to L.A. County. 60 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK, 1955 ... Ranching can be dangerous work. COC Stadium was the site of perhaps the worst brawl in local history. One old-timer noted that that’s the reason why some of these spots in distant canyons have palm trees today — from the movie industry coming in and leaving behind exotic flora. 80 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK, 1935 ... The SCV used to be the temporary home of wandering gypsies, who would travel in a huge figure-8 trek picking crops in SoCal. The wanderers settled down in Mint Canyon for several weeks as a man known as Adam held court. He was King of the Gypsies and was there to await his spoil from his subjects, who came from all over the country and the world to pay tribute. Hundreds of gypsies would set up camp. While their cousins, bands of agricultural gypsies, came through town in big and colorful horse-drawn wagons, the wandering gypsies roared through in large cars and vans, setting up carnivals and fortune telling shows. Local police rolled on a report of a double homicide in one of the camps. When they got there, they were greeted by a mob of men who asked, “What murder?” The deputies left it at that. {John Boston has been named Best Serious and Best Humorous newspaper columnist in California, Los Angeles, and America, several times, to go with 119 major writing awards, including The Will Rogers Humanitarian Lifetime Achievement Award. What a shock, huh? He invited a coalition of African-American evangelical pastors to a meeting at Trump Tower in New York. Then he announced to the world they were endorsing him for president. No calculated move here … though it came just a few days after Trump made a supremely stupid comment about a Black Lives Matter protestor who was physically beaten at a Trump event. He said, “Maybe he deserved to be roughed up.” By Sylvia Turner who added “It should come as no surprise that Donald Trump doesn’t understand civility from an opponent, since he is incapable of showing civility to an opponent.” Only about 50 black leaders showed up to Trump Towers, though it didn’t keep the candidate from bragging about 100 being there. And claiming they endorsed him. Bishop Victor Couzens went to the meeting and said Trump’s staffers made him sound like a good Presbyterian. Okay, I’m laughing out loud now. Bishop Corletta Vaughn of Detroit was invited to Trump events repeatedly, but she had nothing but disdain for his candidacy, even posting her sentiment on Facebook. Yet, her name ended up on a flier put out by Trump’s campaign saying she was attending the meeting to endorse Trump. Other leaders had the same experience – their names appeared on the list too, but definitely do not like him. How pathetic that he has to fake, or swindle, support by the black community. “This was a get-played moment,” said Vaughn to NPR reporters. “Just play the preachers. Put them in the same room, take pictures, and then you can put anything you want, in terms of content, with a picture.” Trump announced that he’d gained the endorsement of 100 black ministers from across the country, but in reality, several black ministers were on talk radio and cable TV denouncing him. Couzens also reported to NPR that he asked Trump to apologize for tweeting that blacks commit most of the homicides with white victims, but Trump wouldn’t. On a more positive note, Mark and Priscilla Chan Zuckerberg rock. Members of the Giving Pledge list, they put their money where their mouths are by taking something as meaningful as the birth of their child to announce a plan to donate 99 percent of their Facebook shares, with a value of approximately $45 billion. “For your generation to live in a better world, there is so much more our generation can do,” it read. “Today your mother and I are committing to spend our lives doing our small part to help solve these challenges.” Other donors who have taken the pledge are from 15 countries, aiming their fortunes at missions such as poverty alleviation, disaster relief, education, global health and medical research. That’s the beauty of the Left. And the tweets! They were so sweet! They included such remarks as “Prostitutes for Trump…don’t let black pulpit become a pole” by @JamalBryant and “He probably expected to get attacked, so he interpreted their civility as endorsement” said @brynaw, **The Views and Opinions expressed in these columns are those of the writer, not necessarily those of Valley Publications/Santa Clarita Gazette.** Political Endorsement Letter Policy The Santa Clarita Gazette will print any letter (space available) supporting or endorsing a candidate for political office free of charge. A co-worker of a friend of mine told the friend “I like reading Doug’s Rant, but he seems like a grumpy guy.” Me grumpy?! What the heck do I have to be grumpy about? My wife, my family, my employees, my friends, people in the community, rant readers, even my dogs don’t understand me. I can take anything but criticism and being disagreed with, yet it happens all the time. We have a president who is a complete joke and I know people who think he is the best president we’ve ever had! Other than these things, everything is just freaking great. I still can’t figure out why someone put an Eeyore doll on my desk, though. I do jest, but there has been something eating at me lately and I wasn’t sure what it was until I heard about the woes of Target on cyber Monday, when its website crashed from all the business they were trying to transact. Then it dawned on me, it’s the digital age! While this age is a blessing in many ways, it also has put the hurt on many types of businesses. Almost every size and type of bricks-andmortar retail store has been impacted. Retail space leasing is predicted to nose dive as a result, and restaurants are feeling the impact, with less traffic heading from stores surrounding them. Even car repair shops are seeing a dip in business. Less driving means fewer repairs. The payphone business, the camera film industry, the recording industry (albums, cassettes and CD’s), travel agencies, printing companies, the post office and yes, the NEWSPAPER industry, all are negatively affected by the digital age. I’m sure I’m leaving some out, but what is one to do? Once upon a time the gas lamp industry, the horse-drawn wagon industry and many more were impacted by new technology; the business world didn’t come to end then and it won’t now. Me Grumpy? Nah, I’ve got many blessings to be thankful for! Emit This, Mr. President! What kind of rant will I emit when this guy is out of the White House? I mean, really, his stupid ideology just keeps getting better and better, or I should I say worse and worse? He was at the climate change conference in Paris acting like the savior of the world. He must have finally realized his domestic and foreign policies are crashing to the ground in flames! Desperate to leave any sort of a positive legacy, he is grasping at straws, hoping to save face. Aside from that, he made a fool out of himself on the world stage. It really is embarrassing as a nation to hear the laughable things he said with total seriousness. Do you think Putin or China’s leaders give two craps about climate change? I’ll bet they make "Loving God... Loving Others" fun of Obama behind closed doors, over vodka, as they laugh at his puffed-up attitude over this bogus crisis. Can’t you just hear them? “Do you really think this wimp thinks climate change is more of a danger than terrorism? Never mind he wants to singlehandedly put an end to the coal industry, causing real hardship on families and economies. I can’t go on any longer about this guy without breaking into ranting profanities, about which my wife and God wouldn’t be happy, so I’ll leave what those ranting words are to your imagination! Pope: World Headed toward Suicide if no Climate Agreement: How in the name of the pope does he really know that? Quotes of the Week: “Putin is dropping bombs, we’re dropping pamphlets” (Rep. Ryan Zinke, Republican congressman from Montana) “President Obama is like a beautiful sunrise: each morning, he astonishes anew. Except that the sunrise is beautiful, and President Obama is simply stupid.” (Ben Shapiro, Briebart News) Does Air Force One Produce Carbon Dioxide? Does the jet Obama uses for travel emit CO2? Just wondering, because if he really thinks the stuff is a serious problem, why in the world do he and his family fly so much on Air Force One? It’s not just for the nation’s business either. According to Judicial Watch and the Washington Examiner, the dude has spent a minimum of over $33 million (through March) on vacations since taking office. This includes lodging, golf, the Secret Service, etc. But how many jet miles does this include? I do know it’s a heap, because Hawaii, Africa, even California, aren’t very close to Washington, and those vacation trips have occurred several times throughout the years. Also, I don’t think those costs and the flight miles emitting tons of CO2 include the numerous fundraising trips to Los Angles for the Democratic Party, also causing increased CO2 emissions from cars having to idle in traffic as he motorcades from LAX. The point is, if the guy is so concerned about the harmful effects of the offending emissions, why doesn’t he put his example where his mouth is? Why doesn’t he keep his butt at home so the horrible poison the jet emits doesn’t cause more terrorism? Come on, if he really thinks this is the worst threat we face, he should lead by example, right? Yeah, right! Do you think his pollution-causing vacation lifestyle came up in Paris while he was hanging with his world leader buddies? Not likely, because they probably do the same hypocritical thing he does. Top Military Officer Contradicts Obama, Says ISIS Not Contained: This guy better start looking for another job quickly. Obama does not tolerate this kind of behavior. Casual Atmosphere. On a more serious note, he announced the U.S. will start with a $51.2 million contribution to help the poorest countries adapt to climate change. Oh, really? We are drowning in debt and he haphazardly goes around Congress making this donation only to make himself look good. This guy has no clue, absolutely none. All the crap going on here, around the world, and he selflessly feeds his ego while the rest of us gag, not on CO2, but on his stupidity! Recent Headlines Catching My Attention: (with my 2 cents added) 9 “The … warming before our last ice age was much warmer than anything we’ve had since. We had a warming that peaked 9,000 years ago, another warming that peaked 5,000 years ago. Both were warmer than today. Probably the Roman warming and the medieval warming were both warmer than today and we’ve had eight warmings of the earth since the last Ice Age.” (Dennis Avery) “But we’re responsible for all the carbon dioxide greenhouse effect? Gracious no! Humans can only claim responsibility, if that’s the word, for about 3.4 percent of carbon dioxide emitted to the atmosphere annually; the rest of it is all natural.” (Steven Milloy, Fox News commentator) “I don’t know what it tells you, but it tells me that maybe we should study a bit more before we spend billions to solve a problem we don’t understand so well.” (Jonah Goldberg, conservative columnist) The point is that there is tremendous hypocrisy among the Christian Right. And I think that Christian voters should start looking at global warming and extreme poverty as a religious issue that speaks to the culture of life.” (Al Franken, D-Minn) The Gazette Radio Hour With Doug Sutton & John Rogers Every Friday from 2-3 pm - NEW TIME! Brandon Jauregui, 24, was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia several years ago and is still not in remission, but his diagnosis didn’t stop him from winning this year’s marathon — or the Santa Clarita Half Marathon in 2013. Jauregui placed first out of 347 total runners in the 2015 Santa Clarita Marathon held Nov. 8 with a finishing time of two hours, 35 minutes and 18 seconds, according to Race Central’s results page. “That’s the day I wasn’t scared of my cancer anymore; the day I realized just because bad things have happened to me doesn’t mean I still can’t do good things; the day everything changed,” Jauregui said in a blog post published by SCV News. “For the first time in a very long time I felt invincible.” He continued, “I wanted to win that race for all the people who supported me, and still do, in my running career and battle against cancer. I’ve also realized cancer can be such an unpredictable and scary aspect of life. I have no idea how long I’ll be competing for or how long I’ll be here, The win qualified him for the 2017 Boston Marathon, prompting resident Amanda Meredith to create a Go Fund Me page so Jauregui can participate in the Los Angeles Marathon in February 2016 followed by the Boston Marathon in April 2017. Funds donated through the page would be used for Jauregui’s registration fees, flight to Boston, hotel accommodations and food, according to the Go Fund Me page. Meredith set an initial goal of raising $2,000 for Jauregui, and has raised $1,555 over the last 20 days. “If I learned one thing during my quest for marathon gold on Nov. 8, it’s that no matter how hard something gets, fighting back is worth it,” Jauregui said. “I’m not sure it’s even possible to top my SCV marathon win, but I’ll keep training hard because I know my battle against cancer and my comeback in running is inspiring someone out there.” To visit the Go Fund Me page for Brandon Jauregui, go to www.gofundme.com/tk9sat2k. This week, you guys sent lots of relatable questions that needed to be answered. Here are just a few of them. When is the best time to vape at a funeral? Funerals are a sad time for everyone — friends, lovers, even family members. But, that doesn’t mean that you can’t still put the “fun” in funeral. Personally, I recommend blowin’ clouds during the open casket. Nobody will question the gnarly vape storm coming from the front of the room. Just pretend to accidentally nudge the coffin. Most people will assume that the jolt of the casket rustled Ethel’s ancient hairdo into a dust frenzy. It is foolproof. I have this weird rash on my leg. Can you take a look? Please leave me alone. I got an F on a test. How do I break the news to my parents? Ouch! This is a touchy one. Finding out that a child is underperforming in school can be detrimental to a family’s social status and overall superficial image. Stop panicking — there is a way to break the news without breaking that social order. The first step would be to initiate tragedy — make your bad grade look like a dream scenario. Pay a man on the street to make Fluffy disappear for a few weeks. Your parents will be too busy grieving the bitter loss to care about your chemistry final. Give yourself a high-five. My boyfriend just broke up with me to follow his dream of becoming a celebrity chef. How do I cope with such a loss? From Emeril to Bobby Flay, the path to becoming a celebrity chef has been riddled with spurned lovers. Instead of coping, be proactive. Get him back. Culinary school is the first step. Upon graduation, challenge him to an Iron Chef competition. Make him sign a marriage license (disguised as a contract) minutes before competing. Till death do you part. Help! My mom thinks memes are funny. Am I adopted? I remember when my mom liked memes. I checked the local library for birth records, scoped the craigslist personals for adoption stories, and even had my DNA examined by a geneticist. I eventually found out that I was indeed adopted. You should check local adoption records before your life gets any worse. Warning: This piece is a satire. Founded in 1997, the mission of HandsOn Santa Clarita is to provide support and resources to build nonprofit capacity and connect local nonprofit organizations with volunteers, groups and businesses. “Volunteer centers such as HandsOn Santa Clarita can provide a lot of resources to small, local nonprofits that wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford them,” said Ethan Reynolds, an organization spokesperson. “There are a lot of organizations in Santa Clarita that rely on the support of volunteers to continue serving the community—many more than most people realize. These organizations work with us to start building volunteer relationships and to take their organization to the next level.” By Melissa Lampert Organization officials are currently gearing up for their annual 5K/10K Holiday Run Fundraiser at Six Flags Magic Mountain. The third annual event, set for December 19, gives community members the chance to dress up in holiday costumes and go for a “fun run” through the theme park. “Get a close up view of dozens of roller coasters as you run past all of the park’s main attractions, all for charity,” HandsOn Santa Clarita officials said on the event’s Facebook page, adding that the race typically sells out. The top three females and top three males in each race will receive an award, while all participants will be given a medal and goody bag. Registration is expected to stay open until race day, and organization officials are still in need of volunteers to help put on the event. In just one year, HandsOn Santa Clarita volunteers “gave back” more than 175,000 hours to local nonprofits, according to an April 2015 The HandsOn Santa Clarita 5K/10K Holiday Run at Magic Mountain report by KHTS AM-1220. In addition to regular volunteer opportunities, the organization currently offers a program where court-referred volunteers can complete their mandated community service. The program was designed to be an alternative sentencing program used by court and probation officials instead of incarceration. “Organizations all across Santa Clarita are always in need of volunteers; HandsOn Santa Clarita is no exception,” Reynolds said. “There’s no better way to get in the holiday giving spirit than to volunteer. Give your time to the community to make it a better place.” For more information about HandsOn Santa Clarita or the 5K/10K Holiday Run Fundraiser, go to www.handsonscv.org or call 661-257-1997. Hero of the Week Mia Slotsve By Melissa Lampert Mia Slotsve is an active community member who has served numerous organizations throughout the Santa Clarita Valley in recent years, including HandsOn Santa Clarita. “She is a star volunteer, giving of herself and her time at every need and opportunity,” said Ethan Reynolds of HandsOn Santa Clarita. “She, and others like her, form the foundation upon which our community is built and allow nonprofit organizations that benefit (from) that community to thrive.” Slotsve is a Girl Scout leader and area recruiter, PTA secretary and chair for several local events. She has volunteered at the Santa Clarita Community Garden’s Arbor Day event for the last two years and is a “regular cheerleader” at mile 12 of the Santa Clarita Marathon. In addition, Slotsve is on the Inaugural SCV Chamber of Commerce Santa Colorita Committee, and is currently in her third year of serving on the committee for HandsOn Santa Clarita’s annual Magic Mountain Holiday 5K/10K Run. Six Red Dresses Bring Awareness to Domestic Violence When residents see six red dresses hanging in various locations in the Santa Clarita Valley, they are urged to be more aware of the issue of domestic violence. The Zonta Club of Santa Clarita has launched a campaign and joined forces with the City of Santa Clarita, the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff ’s Station and the Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita to curtail the level of domestic violence in the community through awareness. Called “Zonta says NO to Violence Against Women,” the group will display six red dresses throughout the City from now through Wednesday, December 11, 2015. The six red dresses depict six local women who have lost their lives due to domestic violence. All of the dresses will be displayed outside, vulnerable to wind and weather. Those elements will animate the dresses, revitalizing the life that is missing. The amount of money that changes hands in these sales is numbered in the hundreds of billions, and retail stores and websites alike will be chomping at the bit to get as much of it as they can. However, merchants aren’t the only ones who are waiting to get a piece of your hard-earned cash during the holidays. Thieves are well aware of the mad dash to spend that’s currently taking place, and are working hard to steal your credit card data and use it themselves or sell it to someone else. Our world is becoming increasingly digital and thieves, too, are upping their game and coming up with all sorts of new ways to get at your precious data. Gone are the days when an enterprising young thief would dig through the trash at the local mall or department store, hoping to find a bag containing carbon receipts from customers’ credit card swipes. Now, they’re using a host of new, craftier modes to not only get a hold of your info, but sometimes to get it directly from you. One method for stealing someone’s credit card data is by getting a person to unknowingly scan their credit card in a false reader, then stealthily scanning it a second time using a small, square device about the size of a golf ball. This second device, known as “a skimmer,” steals and records your credit card’s data. Another common thing thieves do with skimmers is to replace legitimate credit card readers on gas pumps. These new skimmers are designed to read your card and transmit the data via blue tooth to a nearby computer or Smartphone. So, with methods like these (and more) employed by thieves to steal your credit card data, how can you keep yourself safe? First and foremost, regardless of what kind of protection you have on your account, don’t rely on alerts from your bank to notify you of suspicious activity. Check your account regularly and notify your bank immediately if you see anything questionable. Identity theft is like cancer; catching it quick gives you the best chance for mitigating the terrible damage it can do. Also, if you have several accounts and/or credit cards, use only one for your holiday shopping on and offline. It will be much easier to track your expenditures if they’re all in one place. As a matter of fact, when you go out to shop, just bring that one card with you. Thieves now have the technology to steal info directly from your purse or wallet if they can get close enough to you physically. Finally, if you decide to do any purchasing online, ensure that you have good anti-virus software, that it’s up to date, and don’t use any unsecured WiFi networks. The scary thing is that there’s no sure-fire way to protect yourself from identity theft 100 percent, but the more steps you take, the less likely you’ll be to fall victim to it. Boydston himself said he doesn’t know why he has been repeatedly passed over in the rotation for the position, or if he will be seriously considered in next week’s decision. According to Boydston, the fact that city council members are elected by the residents of Santa Clarita means that each and every council person deserves a fair chance at entering the rotation. “Over the past several years, we have been witness to the majority of our council members voting themselves superior compensation over new council members,” Ferdman explained. “Over the past decade, we have witnessed our council members voting to place a member in the role of mayor when that individual is up for reelection.” Ferdman concluded that actions like these “do not reflect the will of the electorate and are not in the best interest of the city of Santa Clarita.” “I know that in the past, Councilman Acosta has indicated to me on a personal level that he would be in favor of me serving as the mayor,” Boydston said. “I don’t know if he still feels that way or not. As to the other three council people, I have no idea.” According to Boydston, the fact that city council members are elected by the residents of Santa Clarita means that each and every council person deserves a fair chance at entering the rotation to become mayor pro tem, which traditionally leads to their appointment as mayor. However, Boydston noted that McLean has been passed over in the rotation before, and Kellar pointed out that he himself has been passed over as well — which could indicate that the situation may not be specific to Boydston. “It has happened certainly on more than one occasion over the years,” Kellar said. “Traditionally what’s happened is it rotates between all of the people,” Boydston said. “But actually who goes next, there’s no rules written down, and it’s not part of our policies and procedures. I believe it should be, because the voters decided that I should be on the council, and I have a lot of supporters who are asking the question as well: ‘Why aren’t you being considered for one of those positions?’” Alan Ferdman, chair of the Canyon Country Advisory Committee, said that the notion of elected city council members choosing among themselves for the positions of mayor and mayor pro tem should work well, “so long as the council members do not deliberately derail the process.” Regardless of whether the decision to pass over Boydston in the past has been deliberate or unintentional, his supporters are calling on the current city council to give him fair consideration before voting next week. “TimBen Boydston should be treated fairly and given a place in the mayoral rotation process,” Ferdman said. “As an individual, elected to the office of city councilmember, he must be treated as an equal. That is what the city of Santa Clarita’s system of government relies on to work effectively.” MOVIE Times valid Dec 4-Dec 10 LISTING Any movie before 5:15 is a Matinee G.A.T.S. or passes may not be accepted at all shows. I first served as mayor in 2007, then in 2011, and now in 2015, and I have seen our city grow and blossom. We have had some significant accomplishments this past year that I’d like to share with you. We opened two new city parks—River Village Park in the Saugus area and Golden Valley Park off Newhall Ranch Road and Golden Valley Road. We also opened a new roadway, extending Golden Valley Road between Plum Canyon and Newhall Ranch Road. At Central Park, we completed the design of a new tennis center. In Valencia, Old Orchard Park will soon be renovated, thanks to a new master plan that was created in collaboration with the community. We added 258 acres of open space to our Open Space Preservation District and completed the public outreach process for a new and larger Community Center in Canyon Country on 6.5 acres of newly purchased land at Soledad Canyon and Sierra Highway. A new Saugus Library Center is on the horizon, and this month, we’ll unveil our new Arts Master Plan. Our Film Incentive Program yielded over $15 million in estimated economic impact to our community, with location filming at an all-time high. I’m very proud that we were able to get the post office back into Newhall, as well as advance our efforts to protect our communities from negative impacts of the state’s proposed High Speed Rail project. I was pleased that Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti accepted my invitation to hold his quarterly Los Angeles County Mayors’ meeting in Santa Clarita this past October. These meetings allow L.A. County cities to come together to work on important regional issues. One of my favorite aspects of living in Santa Clarita is all of the wonderful festivals and events, which offer free and low-cost family entertainment, such as: The 2015 annual Cowboy Festival that attracted thousands to Old Town Newhall, where nationallyrenowned western performers entertained locals and visitors. We also hosted our annual Earth Arbor Day event at Central Park, plus the Emergency Expo at the Hyatt, and of course our popular concert series every Saturday night during the summer. I want to encourage you to visit Main Street in Old Town Newhall this holiday season where we have decorated our downtown with thousands of lights, two skylines featuring Santa and his reindeer, plus a 23-foot fully decorated Christmas tree in front of the Old Town Newhall Library. (Visit www.oldtownnewhall. com for a list of free and low cost activities slated for the holiday season.) I’m looking forward to seeing some great projects go from the current planning stages to culmination. I hope you continue to stay engaged in the planning process! If you are interested in learning more about the many city programs and projects in the works, if you would like to volunteer, or view any aspect of our city’s on-going programs, please visit us online at: santa-clarita.com. As one of my last official actions as mayor, I want to wish all of our residents and families a safe and wonderful New Year. Please feel free to email me with any questions or comments at: [email protected]. Dec 4 - Dec 10, 2015 MESSAGE FROM THE CITY MANAGER Ken Striplin December 2015 On behalf of everyone at City Hall, I want to wish you and your family a very happy holiday season. It has certainly been a busy year at the City of Santa Clarita and next year promises to be equally as exciting. Most recently, the city launched two important websites in which I would like for you to be aware. The first is to help our community through the anticipated heavy rains expected as a result of El Nino; “Ready for Rain” can be found at www. santa-clarita.com/readyforrain. This comprehensive website offers information regarding preparing for a very wet season, as well as what the city is doing to prepare and assist our community. It also contains information for burn areas and links to other resources. I encourage you to check out it and while you’re at it, sign up to receive emergency information from the city. In response to several domestic violence related homicides this year, the city has teamed up with L.A. County to create the DIVERT (Domestic Intervention Violence Education Resource Team) Task Force. The Task Force meets regularly to better focus on education, outreach and enforcement to affect real change and work to stop domestic and family violence incidents in the community. A newly launched website, www.santa-clarita.com/ DIVERT, provides a one-stop shop for all of the area’s resources pertaining to domestic violence, including counseling, support groups, anger management and more. If you are or someone you know is suffering from domestic violence, I encourage you to direct them to this website. Finally, I hope that you have an opportunity to visit Main Street in Old Town Newhall this month. The City and our partners, Henry Mayo Hospital and the SCV Auto Dealers Association have created a winter wonderland with festive lights, holiday décor and a 23-foot Christmas tree in front of the Old Town Newhall Library. For a list of events and happenings on Main Street this month, visit: www. oldtownnewhall.com. U.S. Navy Sailor from Santa Clarita Receives Special Thanksgiving Family Reunion By Melissa Lampert A Santa Clarita man serving in the U.S. Navy was chosen to participate in a special event that reunited military service members stationed in Norfolk, Virginia with their families for Thanksgiving. A 2014 Saugus High School graduate, Petty Officer 3rd Class Kevin Davis was one of only 72 Sailors and Marines selected to participate in the event, called “Happy ThanksGathering.” “It’s amazing that my family got to come out here to visit for Thanksgiving,” said Davis, whose mother and brother, Penny and Andrew Davis, and sister, Nicole Keith — all Santa Clarita Valley residents — were flown to Norfolk last week through the program. “Happy ThanksGathering” is held by the U.S. Navy Mid-Atlantic Region Morale, Welfare and Recreation in partnership with SC Johnson due to the fact that many military service members are unable to see their families during the holidays. Throughout the two-day event, participants enjoyed a Thanksgiving dinner, a tour of a Navy ship and a Thanksgiving Day football party. The band “Train” also performed a private concert for event participants and other Navy personnel stationed in Norfolk. VISIT OUR ALL NEW WEBSITE AT WWW.SANTACLARITAFREE.COM “I am so grateful for everything members of our armed forces and their families do each and every day to protect our country. They sacrifice a great deal, especially time away from their loved ones,” said Fisk Johnson, chairman and CEO of SC Johnson. “Reuniting these families for Thanksgiving is one small way that SC Johnson can say ‘thank you.’” Norfolk is home to nearly 70 ships and 40 aviation squadrons that make up the Navy’s Atlantic Fleet, with approximately 44,000 Sailors stationed in the area. “Our service men and women work incredibly hard throughout the year and many are unable to visit their families during the holidays,” said Capt. Doug Beaver, commanding officer of Naval Station Norfolk. “SC Johnson’s support to unite these families for Thanksgiving is especially welcome and will make an incredible difference in the lives of these young men and women. This celebration will create memories for these families that will last a lifetime.” Article Source: www.hometownstation. com Dec 4 - Dec 10, 2015 Your Hometown News and Classifieds DOG GROOMING Certified in AKC Salon Management, Pet CPR, Pet Hygiene Where all dogs look PAWSOME! Santa will be there to pose for pictures with kids from 12:30-2:30 p.m. and three of the community’s favorite singing groups will be serenading shoppers. Musical performers include local baladeer Felicia Grady, KIKstart musical band, and the West Ranch High School Choir “Encore” group led by Molly Peters. The boutique is an SCAA fundraiser for an art gallery in the community. Home Care Services is located at 23340 Cinema Drive in Valencia. For information, call Lynda Frautnick at (661) 252-9313. Gail Morgan Joins Bridge to Home Board The Bridge to Home Board of Directors voted recently to add Gail Morgan to the Board of Directors. Morgan has served as a board member for the Child and Family Center, the Domestic Violence Center of the Santa Clarita Valley and most recently, with Family Promise of SCV. She also volunteers for the SCV Pregnancy Center and for the former Foundation for Children’s Dental Health. Gail Morgan is the City of Santa Clarita’s communications manager, where she has worked since 1990. She is responsible for the City’s public and community relations activities, strategic communications including media, audio-video, social media, publications, and graphic design. Photo by Dan Harding Traffic Alert: Road Closures on Bouquet Canyon Saturday and Sunday Southern California Edison will be completing scheduled work to replace a large utility pole at the intersection of Bouquet Canyon Road and Seco Canyon Road beginning at 8 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, 2015 for no longer than 22 hours. The work is scheduled to be completed by 6 p.m. on Sunday, December 6. This work was rescheduled from October 10, 2015 due to extreme heat conditions. The construction will require the closure of two eastbound traffic lanes on Bouquet Canyon Road, with one through lane and one left turn lane open at all times. The traffic signal at the intersection of Bouquet Canyon Road and Seco Canyon Road will be set to flashing red, creating an all-way stop. Santa Clarita Sheriffs will be on site Sunday to assist with traffic control. Regular commuters along Bouquet Canyon Road or Seco Canyon Road are encouraged to plan ahead when traveling during these times. For more information, contact Senior Traffic Engineer Gus Pivetti at (661) 286-4047. Holiday Event at Hart Mansion The Friends of Hart Park are hosting a free holiday event on Saturday, December 5, 2015 from 7-9 p.m. at the William S. Hart Mansion, located at 24151 Newhall Avenue in Old Town Newhall. The special holiday event will include musical performances by violinist Jesse Brazil and the members of the Valencia High School Choir, who will be wearing caroling costumes. Guests will be treated to the free holiday performances and holiday refreshments. Everyone is welcome. Parking is available at Hart Park, and free shuttles up to the mansion will be provided by L.A. County Parks and Recreation. Guests are asked to meet at the gift shop located near the Hart Park entrance. “I am delighted and honored to join this dedicated board and help support the important work of Bridge to Home in our community,” said Morgan. “Gail is going to be a terrific addition to our board. The next couple of years will be critical, with major work projects upcoming for Bridge to Home. Gail has experience dealing with these issues and we’re looking forward to working with her,” said Bridge to Home Board President Hunt Braly. Morgan’s first meeting will be in December at the regular board meeting and she will join many other community leaders on the board, who include: Hunt Braly, Peggy Edwards, Bret Wims, Andy Pattantyus, Bob Hudson, Erin Ari, Gary Choppe, Bill Brintnall, Gary Choppe, Steve Tannehill, Mark Young, Karen Haskins and Marguerite Berg. Bridge to Home’s vision is to create a continuum of care, focused on providing comprehensive support services and strategic planning that pave the way for individuals to transition out of homelessness. Key goals include the relocation of all of its homeless services to a new permanent location. There the nonprofit would oversee the Emergency Winter Shelter, along with the expansion of services that will provide comprehensive care, including: medical help, mental health assistance, job resources and placement, case management and access to affordable housing.
