The group of eight tech savvy high school students was formed to provide technical support to teachers and students. Projects range from helping students create websites and developing screencast tutorials to showing teachers how to integrate the most useful tech tools into their curriculum. The squad got official status in 2012 when the East Troy Community School District Board of Education agreed to give members credit for its work at ETHS. The group, advised by teacher Claudia Felske, has expanded its goal (to help students and teachers learn and love technology) to the greater East Troy community. Aside from helping teachers and students at school, the group also does community outreach each month at “Ask a Geek” sessions. Community members are invited to come in (smart phones, tablets, laptops in tow) to learn new technology skills and get their questions answered. “‘Ask a Geek’ started when we were joking one day about how our relatives and neighbors all seem to have a list of tech questions for us every time we see them,” Felske said. “We all had this same experience and realized that there are a lot of people out there with tech questions that we could answer.” Tailored to the personal requests and needs of individuals in attendance, sessions take place from 9-11 a.m. the first Saturday of every month in Room 119 at East Troy High School, 3128 Graydon Ave., and are free and open to the public. No appointments necessary. Community members are welcome to bring their smart phones, laptops, tablets, and technology questions. Members of the East Troy High School Geek Squad will be present to help. With a new organizational structure, the program is expected to serve more families in need this year. “In the past, community organizations such as the East Troy School District, the Lions Club, the East Troy Food Pantry, the Lionesses and the Kiwanis, as well as different churches and businesses have worked to assist families in need to provide gifts and food over the Christmas holidays, but often as separate entities,” said Komperud. “Mary Green, former social worker at East Troy Schools and coordinator of the Holiday Help program with the school district, had a vision of that program merging with other community service organizations to form a more central, community based program to serve the Holiday Help needs of community members.” Komperud said a consortium of organizations and community leaders began to meet over a year ago to decide what this program might look like and how it could transition smoothly from multiple programs to one community program. “This new program currently involves organizations like the East Troy Food Pantry, Lions, Lioness, East Troy Manor, East Troy Community School District, Woman’s Club, First Citizens State Bank, St. James Methodist Church, St. Peter’s Church and School, Helping Hands of St. Peter’s, Good Shepherd Church, East Troy Bible Church, Kiwanis Club, and Associated Bank,” according to Komperud. “Perspective families in need of this program will still be referred by the school district, the food pantry, Helping Hands of St. Peter’s and other venues; however the interview forms will all be uniform and a master list of clients will be maintained,” she said Here’s the program’s complete guide to gift giving for local families living in poverty. 1.
