BISHOP OF BROOKLYN
MOST REVEREND NICHOLAS DiMARZIO, Ph.D., D.D.
Bishop of Brooklyn
CATHOLIC CHARITIES BROOKLYN AND QUEENS • JUNE 4, 2014
MOST REVEREND
NICHOLAS DIMARZIO, PH.D., D.D.
Named to lead the Brooklyn Diocese on August 1, 2003, after four years as the Bishop of the Diocese of Camden, Bishop Nicholas
DiMarzio was installed in his new See at a Mass of Installation held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica in Brooklyn on October
3, 2003.
With strong ministerial and family ties to New Jersey, the Newark-born prelate began his ministry among migrants in 1976, six
years after his ordination as a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark in 1970, as the archdiocese’s Refugee Resettlement Director, a
post he held nine years. During that time, Bishop DiMarzio also served a two-year term as Director of the Office of Migration of
the Archdiocese’s Catholic Community Services.
In 1996, Pope John Paul II elevated him to the rank of Auxiliary Bishop. From 1998 until 2001, he chaired the Migration Committee
of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. For six years, Bishop DiMarzio served as Chairman of the Catholic Legal Immigration
Network, Inc. (CLINIC) board. In 2000, he was appointed a member of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants
and Itinerant People, a post he continues to hold. Because of his wide-ranging knowledge and experience in matters affecting
migrants and immigrants, Bishop DiMarzio has testified frequently before committees of the United States Senate and House of
Representatives.
Appointed the sixth Bishop of Camden in 1999, Bishop DiMarzio undertook several initiatives, including establishing an Office
of Ethnic Ministries, an Office of Black Catholic Ministry and an Office of Hispanic Ministry. He also created an apostolate to the
Haitian community and founded two missions to serve the Korean and Vietnamese communities.
Shortly after becoming the Bishop of Brooklyn, Bishop DiMarzio was nominated as the United States representative on the
19-member Global Commission on International Migration (GCIM), a United Nations sponsored commission, whose mandate
was to provide the framework for the formulation of a coherent, comprehensive and global response to the issue of international
migration. It began its work in 2003 and concluded in 2005 after completing a report, entitled “Migration in an Interconnected
World: New Directions for Action.”
He is currently a member of the Bishops’ Migration Committee and CLINIC. Bishop DiMarzio’s column of reflections on issues
affecting the faithful, entitled “Put Out Into the Deep,” appears weekly in the Diocesan newspaper, The Tablet.

PROGRESS OF PEOPLES
AWARD HONOREE
WILLIAM TRAYLOR
President, Richman Housing Resources, LLC
CATHOLIC CHARITIES BROOKLYN AND QUEENS • JUNE 4, 2014
WILLIAM TRAYLOR
William Traylor is the president of Richman Housing Resources LLC. For three decades he has worked in New York City in affordable housing finance
and development, and, throughout his career, has focused especially on housing vulnerable homeless New Yorkers, those living with mental illness, HIV
illness, substance abuse disorders, physical disabilities and other challenges to independence. Over thirty-plus years, Bill’s emphasis and commitment
has been to ensure that we listened to and heeded the voices and the needs of the most vulnerable among us as the city’s housing policy has evolved
and administrations have come and gone. His dedication to social justice was honed through his religious upbringing and training, where he learned
that faith demands action and that action means dedicating one’s energies and life so that justice happens.
In 1985, fresh out of graduate school at the University of Notre Dame, Bill began his career working with Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens
to convert church-owned properties into housing for homeless individuals. It was the very beginning of a model of housing that become known as
supportive housing, where social services are combined with permanent housing and where the goal is to provide individuals with the resources and
support to become full and active citizens within their communities. Today, such supportive housing is widely considered the solution to helping
vulnerable homeless to achieve full and participatory lives as citizens.
In 1989, after a year-long stint as a community organizer with the St. Nicks Alliance in the Williamsburg-Greenpoint area, Bill was an early hire for New
York City’s new housing initiative targeted to vulnerable homeless individuals in the city’s burgeoning shelter system. Bill’s job was to figure out how
to get it done; initially making loans to nonprofit developers to buy derelict hotels like the Woodstock in midtown and the Euclid on the Upper West
Side to convert to permanent housing with onsite social services. Later he expanded the effort to include the construction of new nonprofit-owned
developments involving micro-units, tiny self-contained apartments, for the homeless. Working for the vulnerable homeless has been his calling.
From 1994 through 2000, he was managing director of the New York office of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), overseeing the $1 billion
New York Equity Fund as well as the office’s lending, grant making and programmatic activities.
In 2001, Bill joined The Richman Group as president of Richman Housing Resources and created its New York office. Under his leadership, Richman
has invested more than $2 billion of private equity into affordable housing developments in New York City consisting of nearly 15,000 apartments, half
of all that has been supportive housing for the vulnerable homeless. He puts together financing from three sources: philanthropy, traditional debt and
equity investment from commercial banks and insurance companies, along with government subsidies. Deeply committed to public service, Bill took a
year off from Richman in 2003 to help implement Mayor Bloomberg’s affordable housing goals, serving as Deputy Commissioner for Development at
the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) and also as president of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC).

BISHOP JOSEPH M. SULLIVAN
SERVICE AWARD HONOREE
JOHN TYNAN
Director, Catholic Charities Progress of Peoples Development Corp.
CATHOLIC CHARITIES BROOKLYN AND QUEENS • JUNE 4, 2014
JOHN TYNAN
John Tynan, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens first-ever 2014 Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan Service Award Honoree, is the Director of Catholic
Charities Progress of Peoples Development Corporation (CCPOP), an affiliate of Catholic Charities. Employed with Catholic Charities Brooklyn and
Queens since 1973, John is credited with leading CCPOP’s vision of transforming vacant land and buildings into affordable housing for those in need
throughout Brooklyn and Queens. He has been the driving force behind CCPOP’s development of more than 3,135 units of affordable housing for lowincome seniors, low and moderate-income families, the formerly homeless, persons with developmental disabilities, and those suffering from mental
illness.
In 1979, John and CCPOP cut the ribbon on Catholic Charities first affordable housing residence, the Pierrepont House, located on Pierrepont Street
in Brooklyn Heights. The Pierrepont House was the first of three affordable housing projects for older adults John and CCPOP were responsible for
opening from 1979 to 1980, which also included the Catherine Sheridan House in Astoria and the Bishop Boardman Apartments in Windsor Terrace.
To date, John’s combined portfolio consists of 44 different buildings for Catholic Charities. John is responsible for 10 percent of the senior housing in
New York City, helping to make CCPOP the largest developer of senior housing in the five boroughs.
In 2005, John took a risk and led CCPOP to refinance 10 of its oldest HUD 202 Buildings, representing the preservation of nearly 1,000 units of
affordable housing, using an innovative mortgage restructuring with tax credits. The refinancing portfolio used a bond issue from the New York City
Housing Development Corporation and tax credits syndicated by Enterprise, and represented one of the largest affordable housing refinancing
initiatives in the country. For this innovative refinancing process, John won an award from the New York Association of Affordable Housing as he was
the first person to get HUD to restructure the mortgages by using tax credits. Today, it is the model that owner/developers use all over the
country.
In late 2013, John and CCPOP celebrated the opening of two more state of the art affordable housing projects in the Msgr. Anthony J. Barretta
Apartments in Ocean Hill and the Peter J. Striano Residence in Howard Beach. The Barretta project was an $18 million, 64-unit development of energyefficient apartments built on the site of a former school, rectory and convent of Our Lady of Loreto Church. The Peter J. Striano Residence, a 96-unit
building with affordable housing for older adults and persons with developmental disabilities features an integrated approach to living with on-site
social services.
John was honored by the New York State Council of Catholic Charities Directors in 2009, with the Bishop Francis J. Mugavero Award for significant and
sustained contribution to the work of charity and social justice on a statewide level. In 2010, John was honored by the Enterprise Community Partners
with the noteworthy Community Renaissance Award.
John is active on many boards related to affordable housing, and chaired the national Catholic Charities Housing Committee for fifteen years. John
holds a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning from Pratt Institute. He and his wife, Sherry, live in Leonia, New Jersey.

CHRISTOPHER MACCHIO
Christopher Macchio was raised in a middle-class family in Long Island, New York. After spending most of his
childhood aspiring to practice law, his voice was discovered almost by accident during a stint in his High School chorus.
Christopher was encouraged to develop the skills necessary to perform on stage, and use his gift for music to connect
with and inspire audiences from all walks of life. He often cites this transition from academics to artistic expression as
the most profound change of his life, and credits the privilege of performing as having enhanced his life tremendously.
A boy alto in his youth, Christopher admits to lacking the temperament to perform solo until high school. Inspired by
the legendary tenor Mario Lanza, Mr. Macchio imbued into his singing a unique blend of bel-canto artistic grace with
Lanza’s sincere emotive power. Once the operatic tenor quality of his voice was discovered at 15, he began serious
exposure to singing at the USDAN Center for the Performing Arts, where he was provided private lessons with NYU
voice instructor and Munich State Opera legend John Kuhn. In 1996 Mr. Macchio began studies at the Manhattan
School of Music Conservatory under Metropolitan Opera baritone Theodor Uppman. In addition to studying with
Metropolitan Opera coaches Bob Cowart and Elizabeth Roberts, he has continued studies with Professor Kuhn,
preparing a wide variety of art songs, arias, and show tunes for annual studio recitals held by the Bronx Conservatory
of Music. In 2000 Mr. Macchio appeared as the principal tenor role of Arturo in Bellini’s I Puritani, a production of
NYC’s Opera Nova, where his performance was described as “brando-esque” by Manhattan’s West Sider Newspaper.
Since then Mr. Macchio has performed for countless special events and dignitaries, including the Vice President of the
United States, the Governor of Massachusetts, and former NYC mayor and presidential candidate Rudolph W. Giuliani.
In the spring of 2010, Mr. Macchio became a founding member of a new group called Bell’Aria; a joint project between
EMI Records and PBS Television to celebrate the richness of the Italian-American musical tradition. In 2011, Mr.
Macchio headlined the Chairman’s Ball at NIAF in Washington DC, where President Barack Obama made the keynote
address, and has headlined concerts with the Concert Pops Orchestra and the Garden State Philharmonic.
After successfully competing in a number of prestigious international opera competitions, Christopher Macchio has
embarked on a solo performance and recording career. It is his deepest aspiration to bring the music of Mario Lanza
and other legendary tenors like Luciano Pavarotti, to a new generation of listeners. Christopher recently released
his debut independent album, produced by Grammy Award-Winning producer Tony Camillo, of “Midnight Train to
Georgia” fame. To promote his album, entitled “Dolci Momenti” (Sweet Moments), Mr. Macchio will be performing a
series of concert tour dates across the United States throughout 2012, including notable venues like Met’s Citi Field,
Feinstein’s Cabaret Theatre at NYC’s Regency Hotel, and the Westbury Music Fair Theatre.

GUIDE TO BEQUESTS
A Guide to Bequests to Catholic Charities
Bequests are an important source of funds for Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens. Throughout its long history of service to
the community, supporters have remembered Catholic Charities in their Wills.
Why are bequests often the most generous gifts one can make?
Bequests are generous because they come from assets accumulated during a lifetime, rather than simply from earned income.
They are also revocable, so people feel more comfortable making larger gifts in their Will. If they need to use their assets during
their lifetime, they can still do so.
How can you include a bequest to Catholic Charities in your will?
If you wish to make a bequest to Catholic Charities, please be sure to use the formal corporate name: “Catholic Charities, Diocese
of Brooklyn.” We recommend that you consider the following language:
“I give, devise and bequeath (insert dollar amount, percentage or description of property) to Catholic Charities, Diocese of
Brooklyn, a New York Corporation, which has its principal offices at 191 Joralemon Street, Brooklyn, NY, 11201, to be used for its
general purposes.”
Gifts and bequests to Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens are deductible under the federal income, estate and gift laws.
Catholic Charities is a not-for-profit corporation incorporated under the laws of the State of New York.
If you advise us that you have included a bequest to Catholic Charities in your Will, you will become a member of the 1899 Society.
The 1899 Society is an honorary organization that recognizes individuals who have generously included Catholic Charities in their
estate plans during their lifetime. Members of the 1899 Society are invited to a recognition luncheon and are listed with other
major donors in our publications.
If you or your attorney would like to discuss a gift or bequest with a member of Catholic Charities’ staff, please call the Office of
Development and Communications at (718) 722-6202 or write to Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens, 191 Joralemon Street,
12th Floor, Brooklyn, NY 11201.

The 1899 Society honors those who support Catholic Charities with a planned gift, such as a gift from their estate.

Today, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens supports over 180 programs, providing help to those most in need
– children, older adults, the formerly homeless, the developmentally and mentally disabled, and immigrant families
making their way in a new world.
We invite you to share in Catholic Charities’ historical commitment to helping our neighbors.
Planned gifts to Catholic Charities include:
Charitable bequests…
Life income plans…
Gifts of appreciated stock, mutual funds and real estate….

Bishop DiMarzio’s
Coat of Arms Club
Because of their concern for the afflicted and what their assistance could mean to those in need in our
Diocese, Mr. Edgar Debany and Mr. William Scalzo founded the Bishop’s Coat of Arms Club in 1972.
With the hope that proceeds of their annual luncheon could be used to further programs of human
services to the many who are served by Catholic Charities, the Coat of Arms Club was established. The
Coat of Arms has grown each year under the guidance and leadership of Monsignor Joseph A. Funaro,
with its members inviting others to join.
As a participating member, each donor attends a special mass and a luncheon at the Bishop’s Residence.
Each new member is the recipient of a plaque inscribed with the Coat of Arms of our Bishop, the Most
Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, the seventh Bishop of Brooklyn.
For further information, please contact Lucy Garrido-Mota, Office of Development and Communications,

Catholic Charities’ Housing Creates Employment Opportunities
We take a holistic approach to building caring
communities that extend beyond the walls of our
housing portfolio and deep into the neighborhoods
of Brooklyn and Queens. When we decide to develop
a project we make a strong commitment to the local
communities and to the residents who live in these
neighborhoods. First, we make sure that the local
residents have the opportunity to move into our
buildings. Next, we make sure that our extensive
network of human services is extended to all of our
residents so that they have the supports necessary to
thrive in our housing. This includes social services,
counseling and home visits to name a few. Finally, we
make sure that we hire directly from the neighborhoods
where we provide housing.
Catholic Charities is one of the largest
employers in Brooklyn and Queens with a
total workforce of 2,305.
In our housing division alone, we are proud
to employ more than 175 full and part-time
workers to support and maintain over 3,000
units of permanent, affordable housing. These
hard working individuals are porters, cooks,
maintenance personnel, social workers and
facilities managers. .
