Does that explain it all? It meant I spent a lot of time drawing and making things. I wanted to be a product designer before I even knew what it was. Then you studied the subject in Barcelona. When I first came to La Massana art school, I fell in love. It was the start of a three-year course, but on the very first day I met my future wife, so there was no turning back. Later you designed kitchen equipment for El Bulli. For five years. But I think designers are specialists in not specialising. Yet the kitchen provided you with the space to invent things. A kitchen is a great place for creativity: it’s like a miniature factory. What did you learn from Ferran Adrià? To approach creative work with the utmost precision. I also realised 6 Time Out BCN Guide May 2014 that it’s easier to do good work if you surround yourself with the best people. Cooking can be a form of poetry. Do you aspire to that with your products? I’m more focused on making new, functional products that offer the user a tangible benefit. This is why we’ve created a workspace where we invite key clients to generate huge numbers of new ideas, up to 800 in a single day. You like to create useful things. Yes, products that really offer something to the user. Like a wall of boxes? Yes, by fixing boxes to the wall you can organise things in a highly visible way. We’d like to create classrooms with this kind of wall, because too often they’re depressing, empty spaces. I have one in the bathroom at home. There are 20 boxes – 18 for my wife and 2 for me. By María José Gómez, Ricard Martín, Marta Salicrú, Eugènia Sendra 8 Time Out BCN Guide May 2014 GETTING READY EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO SEE AND BE SEEN FASHION FORWARD FEET Primavera Sound gets bigger every year. Not just in terms of the line-up and the crowds, but the space it occupies. To trek miles from stage to stage, Vice to Heineken, Pitchfork to Rockdelux, you need footwear that’s comfy and cool, and you’ll find it at: Le Coq Sportif: Boters, 6 Y93 412 41 34 UK-Look: Ample, 27 Y 93 315 02 34 Sivasdescalzo: Marina, 229 Y 93 531 21 22 EYES ON THE PRIZE Whether you show up at 5pm, or stay until the sun rises, you’ll need sunglasses. If you’d rather not be wearing the same shades as half the crowd, take a look at Wild Vintage, where you’ll find styles your mum would recognise, which have come right back into fashion. Another good option is Les Lunettes – it’s hard to leave without spotting a pair you like. Les Lunettes: Rec, 56 Y 93 268 98 70 Wild Vintage: Joaquín Costa, 2 Y 654 455 057 WEAR IT ON YOUR CHEST Primavera Sound is a sea of T-shirts. If you need to replenish your supplies of the short-sleeved wardrobe staple, drop in at Chandal for some Spanish retro nostalgia, or Duke, for up-to-the minute designs – like the print of Kate Moss with a moustache (and still looking ravishing). OR JUST KEEP ON GOING FEED YOURSELF If you’ve been living on a music-only diet for the last few days, with your bodily needs coming a distant second, it’s time to put things right with a decent breakfast. In Barcelona they come in all shapes and sizes, from a traditional dish of salt cod to start the day – at Pa i Trago in Sant Antoni – or the imported notion of brunch, which you’ll find just across the road at Federal Café. In the Born, drop by Picnic for the house speciality of eggs Benedict. And if you can’t drag yourself out of bed, Matias Buenos Dias will deliver a luxury breakfast and hangover cure (for a price), with options that include everything from fresh fruit to champagne. You could book a treatment at Aires de Barcelona or SpaciOmm, or if you prefer a more active (and cheaper) option, put in some lengths in the open air pool at the Club Natació Atlètic Barceloneta, where a day ticket costs €12, and for €6.50 more you can use their basic but satisfactory spa (jacuzzi, sauna and steam room.) For those who still haven’t had enough, Primavera Sound continues on Sunday, with free open-air concerts in the Parc de la Ciutadella. If you’ve seen the whole festival, one more day isn’t going to kill you – and if you’ve missed out, FUNK & SOUL If music is the air you breathe, and vinyl your passion, don’t miss the record shop in Galeries Olimpia (Ronda Sant Pau, 17-19). When Funk and Soul hits you, you feel no pain. SUGAR HIGH FEDERAL CAFÉ 12 Time Out BCN Guide May 2014 It’s an essential element of the post-festival diet: a spoonful of sugar, preferably in the form of cake. Xacolata’s mango mousse awaits you (Sancho de Ávila, 173). here’s your chance. This year the line-up includes Mark Eitzel of American Music Club, one of the most highly-acclaimed American songwriters of his generation; the Italo-Catalan dark pop quintet Berlinist; Katy Goodman (Vivian Girls) presenting La Sera, her solo project; New York indie trio Hospitality; Boogarins, from Brazil, true heirs of psychonauts Os Mutantes; and garage rock out of Los Angeles from the Dum Dum Girls. And if you prefer to take shelter in the hangover-friendly darkness of a club, there’s Primavera action at Apolo, La [2] de l’Apolo, and Barts, proving there’s music beyond the Fòrum with Fuckin Bollocks, No More Lies, Cuello, Vàlius, Dave P, Joana Serrat, Grouper, and Angel Olsen. Be prepared for a long hard Monday – it’s the price you have to pay. AN ORDINARY SUNDAY Life goes on after Primavera Sound, and some festival-goers choose not to disrupt their traditional Barcelona Sunday rituals. You could start with a prelunch vermouth and a plate of olives at La Tieta in Poble-sec, then head to the beach for sea breeze and a paella at Kaiku (reservations essential) or salads and pasta away LA TIETA from the crowds, at Filferro. And to round out the afternoon, a luxury ice-cream from Vioko, or tea at Caj Chai in the Barri Gòtic, before a well-deserved siesta. By Maria Junyent The words science or scientist conjure up images of laboratories, white coats and test tubes, images that seem to have nothing to do with our everyday lives. The objective of the new permanent space Top Science at CosmoCaixa is to bring science closer to the public, especially young people. ‘This is one of the big challenges for science today, and to succeed we need to focus on reaching out to the general public,’ explains Javier Hidalgo, the exhibition’s co-ordinator. At CosmoCaixa, this means hands-on experience: knowledge is gained via the senses. Next to the museum’s Mediterranean area, you’ll find a 16 Time Out BCN Guide May 2014 futuristic exhibition space full of geometric forms, its immaculate whiteness dotted with interactive exhibits that enable visitors to get to grips with science. Get a little bit closer You’ll find an interactive exhibit that explains the 10 most common scientific search terms on the Internet, along with their definitions – gold is one of the most common. There’s an area that presents the latest news from the world of science, and the best ways of staying up to date with it. And finally, you can discover the reality Around town of science at work, via videos in which young scientists in different fields describe their own experiences, and the subjects they studied in order to get where they are today. ‘We want young people to see that scientists are just like them,’ explains Hidalgo. Front-line science Our sense of being disconnected from the world of science stems in large part from our ignorance of its direct practical applications. Top Science presents cutting-edge research projects that are being carried out right now, aimed at finding solutions to problems that affect the whole of society. The projects chosen to inaugurate the space illustrate the concept perfectly. The first asks how we can guarantee ultra-secure communications over vulnerable networks like the Internet, and is presented by the Institute for Photonic Sciences. The second asks a very different question: when will there be a vaccine against AIDS? It’s the result of a collaboration with IrsiCaixa, the AIDS Research Institute. These exhibits are not limited to presenting the facts and the current state of each study: instead they show processes happening in real time, and allow exhibition visitors to participate in interactive experiments with real scientists. Javier Hidalgo emphasises the importance of allowing the public to ‘experience first-hand the dilemmas that scientists face’. New research projects will be featured every six months. The next will take a look at neuroscience, one of the fast-moving fields in science, and one that allows a glimpse of the near future. The other will feature the Alba Synchrotron, the particle accelerator in Cerdanyola del Vallès, just outside Barcelona. Top Science opens its doors permanently on May 9. May 2014 Time Out BCN Guide 17 Arts MARIA DIAS Edited by Josep Lambies [email protected] It’s Colita’s world La Pedrera hosts the first major retrospective dedicated to photographer Isabel Steva i Fernandez, better known as ‘Colita’. By Eugènia Sendra She’s ‘Col’, ‘Cola’ to her friends and ‘Colita’ to the Spanish public, who saw so many different worlds through her lens. After training with the renowned Catalan photographer Oriol Maspons, Colita photographed the great flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya in her heyday, and was on hand to document Barcelona’s Gauche divine, the city’s bohemian arts scene of the sixties and early seventies, with its cast of colourful characters. After a career spanning 50 years, having officially hung up her camera forever, her work is the subject of a retrospective at La Pedrera. The exhibition was curated by Laura Terre, who first worked 18 Time Out BCN Guide May 2014 with the photographer while editing a monograph of her work for the PhotoBolsillo series, and brings together more than 100 images from every phase of Colita’s varied career, from magazine photojournalism during Spain’s transition to democracy, to celebrity portraits and her agitprop snapshots on feminist themes in the seventies. There are also personal possessions, such as the Bakelite camera that was a present from her father, and with which she began to immortalise her friends, family and pets at the age of 13. ‘This is the life of a professional photographer, not of an artist,’ she insists. Video creation Loop BCN is back! COLITA, JUST BECAUSE! LOOP FESTIVAL La Pedrera Until 13 July Barcelona’s specialist video art and moving image fair is celebrating its 12th year with audience engagement as its central theme. Divided into three main sections, Loop Barcelona exhibits new video art all over the city, turning it for a few days into the busiest hub of the international video art scene. Loop Festival, previously known as Screen Festival, presents hundreds of pieces by video artists from all over the world, displayed in more than 100 venues all over the city, from museums to libraries, bookshops and restaurants. Loop Fair, which takes place 5 -7 June, brings together 40 galleries in the hall of the Catalonia Ramblas hotel, presenting 44 video art pieces of which 17 are on display for the first time ever. The annual Loop Prize will be awarded to the most outstanding piece, as chosen by an international jury headed by Bartomeu Marí, director of the MACBA. The fair is also holding Loop Studies, a space for debate for professionals, with a packed programme focusing on the theme of engaging audiences. Various venues 29 May to 7 June May 2014 Time Out BCN Guide 19 Arts Freedom as a style Colita remembers the techniques of photography coming easily to her: photography found her, not vice versa. She recalls the excitement of seeing copies of her first pictures, and her early-morning photo sessions with friends after nights out. She finds it hard to pick out favourites among her negatives, most of which focus on a single individual. But there are images that stay with her forever, shaping her memories, the fruit of a spontaneous style with a critical edge and a hint of irony. ‘I’ve always done what I thought was right, and often I’ve done whatever I felt like too,’ asserts Colita, With her compact automatic camera – she produces it for the photo – Colita is constantly adding to her project ‘Look what I see when I go out for a stroll’, a personal diary that is still not destined for any specific archive. She admits that she distrusts the guardians of culture, which is why she has donated parts of her archives to different institutions. She is also interested in celebrating the work of pioneering female photographers of the 19th and early 20th centuries, in particular the Spanish photographer Piedad Isla, with whom she shares affinities. But Colita is also concerned about the present, and doesn’t hold back when she states that ‘photography is at the arse-end of culture’. ‘There are some great names, of my generation and among younger photographers, who no one has heard of because photography still doesn’t occupy the place it deserves.” If you ask who Colita really is, apart from being the girl who believed her dad when he told her that she was born under a cabbage (‘una col’ – hence her nickname), she answers that she’s ‘a clown, but a serious one, a very serious one’, with a single goal: to allow her subjects to live through her photographs. Food & Drink Edited by Ricard Martín [email protected] Tapas know-how The owners of Taller de Tapas have opened a new restaurant, Ajoblanco, offering top-quality tapas at eminently reasonable prices. By Ricard Martín Foreigners and tapas. Two words that are liable to call forth a torrent of scathing comments form your average Spaniard. Yet today we’re talking to one of Barcelona’s greatest experts in tapas – and she’s from London. Kate Preston is co-owner of the brand-new tapas bar and restaurant on Carrer Tuset, and her tapas know-how is no coincidence. She founded the first Taller de Tapas outlet back in 2003, with her husband José Lombardero, a Galician restaurateur whose tapas pedigree goes back even further: he had a bar in l’Hospitalet in the sixties. 20 Time Out BCN Guide May 2014 At first glance, Ajoblanco looks like another top-end tapas joint, featuring the Baroque touches that are the trademark of the LázaroRosa Violán design studio, kings of the gastro interiors that line Carrer Enric Granados. To an extent it’s true: the interior is solemn, almost ecclesiastical. But the food doesn’t disappoint, and represents the kind of value for money that’s hard to find in this part of town. ‘We make sure that everything’s good quality, but we don’t dress things up. We want the ingredients to speak for 1 Food & Drink FOTOS: IVAN GIMÉNEZ 2 themselves,’ Preston says. She remembers tapas bars in the Barri Gòtic in the late nineties: ‘Everything was zapped in the microwave, all the fried stuff was piled up, nothing was cooked while you waited. It feels like that was another era – but no, it was only 15 years ago.’ She and her husband were the first to change the template, ‘without aiming solely at the tourist market’. Preston doesn’t define Ajoblanco strictly as a tapas bar. Rather it’s a place with ‘classic tapas that we love, dishes for sharing and second courses with character’. There are few fancy touches and plenty of know-how, not much fish, but ‘all of it is fresh from the market every day’, and quality meat at affordable prices, and with a certificate of origin: try their mature Basque entrecote (250g for €18) or Pyrenean lamb ribs. You won’t find foams or flavoured smoke: ‘we don’t believe in that, we’re not setting out to be a gastronomic restaurant’. But what we tried suggested otherwise. This is uptown tapas that the proletarians can afford. 1. Beef tataki Preston mixes English and Japanese cuisine: fine slices of tender, barely done roast beef, with a horseradish sauce that is the equal of any wasabi – and makes a great accompaniment for smoked fish. 2. Artichoke hearts A favourite with customers: a lightly-fried artichoke heart in breadcrumbs with a dab of romesco sauce. The Galician saltwater clams in Martini are also highly recommended. That’s the philosophy at Passage, a concept store in uptown Sarrià. By Laia Beltran An elegant piece of headgear by Philip Treacy. A paper necklace by Ana Hagopian. A Karl Lagerfeld watch. An ethereal blouse by Cortana. Silver jewellery by Chus Burés. A book of photography published by Ivory Press. Nail polish by Kure Bazaar. A Vanesa Lorenzo jacket. Barbas y Bigotes’ shaving gel. A highly personal, and somewhat random, selection of products, you’ll 24 Time Out BCN Guide May 2014 agree – both in terms of price, cachet and origin. But this unexpected and daring blend is what makes a concept store. These are the shops that stay a few steps ahead of the pack, creating fashions for others to follow. And that’s why they have to take risks. In Paris, there’s Colette. In New York there’s Kisan. In London there’s Dover Street. And in Barcelona, there’s Passage. Shopping ‘A place where anything is possible.’ That’s the philosophy at this shop that seduces as soon as you set foot on the other side of the threshold, as they squeeze every drop from the concept store idea. They believe in limited editions, art shows, and pizza-and-movie evenings. Passage’s mission is to be a dynamic, evolving shop with a rebellious streak – a constant source of surprises for their customers. This is why you’ll find sliver rings by Lebanese jeweller Rosa Maria alongside metallic vases with magnetic bases from Peleg Design. Or irresistible hats from Maison Michel happily cohabitating with witty whale-shaped staplers from Monkey Business. The range of price tags is a wide as the selection of goods on sale. You could spend €10 or €200, but you’re always guaranteed to come away feeling pleased with whatever your purchase. Passage is also a good place to save on airfares, since you don’t have to leave Barcelona to take a closer look at the work of upcoming designers from Madrid. Some of our favourites are the amber jewellery made by Felipe González (no relation of Spain’s former prime minister), Adolfo Barnatán’s gold and ebony rings, and clothes by designers Elena Benarroch and Juanjo Oliva.
