REI Starbucks In 2005, Ryan Allison and his mother, Gail Allison-Sanderson protected a large block of riparian land and river frontage just west of the Weeman Bridge in Mazama and began helping us create a contiguous link between easements upstream and downstream. Last year, the Allisons completed another exciting conservation easement with us. This second easement specifically protects Hancock Spring, a cold water spring that originates on the property, and over 3500 ft of Hancock Creek so that between the two easements over 200 acres and the entire length of this important stream is permanently protected. Sustaining Donors ($500 - $999) The names and gifts listed in this report do not reflect any Imagine the Methow Capital Campaign donations. These special gifts were listed in last year’s report. Member Profile Sue & Dick Roberts Sue and Dick Roberts have lived in and loved the Methow Valley for over 30 years. They raised two children here, ran the North Cascades Basecamp for 25 years and have been active volunteers in the community for many organizations including the Methow Conservancy. Sue says, “We love the Methow Conservancy because it allows us to put our money and our time where our hearts are. We believe that keeping the riparian areas intact is crucial so when we first built the North Cascades Basecamp 30 years ago we wanted to keep most of the riparian area wild. Our conservation easement allows that to happen in perpetuity. We enjoy our volunteer time with the Conservancy as well; I serve on the Education Committee and the Imagine the Methow Campaign. Their wonderful staff is unfailingly gracious, helpful, and fun to work with.” Peggy Porter & Rolf Kolden Deborah Jones Gail & Robert Konen Sandra & Ron Judd Judy & Hank Konrad Rebecca & Jim Kahl Catherine & Christopher Konrad Terry Karro Lyn & Rick Krizanich Leilani St. Anna & Patrick Kavanaugh Sherrie & Brian Krown John Kelly Karen Beard & Andrew Kulmatiski Mary & Reid Kenady Paul Lambert Penelope & Steve Kern Joanne Schmitz & Keith Laubhan Scotte & Bil Kilby Kathleen Learned Emmett Kinkade Youngme & Charlie Lehman Sarah Patterson & Chuck Kinsey Lucinda Tear & Robert Levy Mary Ann & Dennis Kirkland Lynn & Peter Lewicki Jan & Jim Klosterman* Jennifer & Steve Knowles Supporting Donors continued on next page. Ric and Heather protected 300 acres of their Methow property near Davis Lake with a Methow Conservancy conservation easement in 2003. They’ve also been active participants on our Advisory Council, a group that provides advice and expertise on philosophical and financial issues in order to further the efforts of the Methow Conservancy. Ric says, “Thank you for the wonderful, difficult, and important work you do. Being associated with the Conservancy is one of the great satisfactions of our lives. We look forward to enjoying the Valley and working with the rest of community to help preserve its special character for many more years to come.” .. R A .. Member Profile Sally & Don Portman Sally is the Winthrop librarian and loves the community involvement the library provides. Don is the owner of Methow Valley Ski School and a board member of MVSTA. It was the shear physical beauty of the Methow that first attracted them here thirty-five years ago. Since then, the Methow environment has been a constant source of inspiration and joy. Rarely a day goes by that they are not out enjoying the land in some way. Don and Sally say, “The Methow Conservancy is vital to maintaining that sense of open space, wildlife habitat, clean water and clean air that we all enjoy so much. But the Conservancy does much more than preserve the land. It fosters a culture of conservation and respect for this wonderful valley. We are happy to be members and contribute annually to the Methow Conservancy.” Instructors & Speakers We are able to hold our monthly 1st Tuesday presentations, annual Methow Conservation Course, and field-classes and workshops thanks to many people who give their time and talents as speakers. R A .. PO B , W, W Imagining the Methow A Look Back by Sarah Brooks It’s hard to believe that last May we were all racing to meet the finish line of our Imagine the Methow Campaign for Conservation. It was almost exactly 12 months ago that we celebrated our community coming together to raise more than $20 million for conservation in the Methow Valley. That was an incredible and historic high point for the Methow Conservancy. And, I admit, as I watched hundreds of people gather in the Winthrop Barn to share their joy in leaving a legacy for this landscape, I wondered if I could ever feel so satisfied and fulfilled in the work of the Methow Conservancy. I can. Twelve months later, I realize that reaching that stillastonishing fundraising goal was just a beginning for The Prewitt easement on the East County Rd adjoins several other easements so that 585 contiguous acres are protected. the Methow Conservancy. The campaign - and each and every one of you who donated, volunteered, or simply believed in it - capitalized our organization and brought us to a whole new level of momentum for land conservation and all that we do. Plus, Photo Highlights from the 2010-2011 Fiscal Year The campaign’s impact on the ground is clear. We’ve already completed 30 conservation easement projects with funds from the campaign. These easements represent miles of protected riverfront, acres of conserved wildlife habitat, long-time orchards and farms that will forever be intact, and key scenic spots that will always take our breath away. And, with the help of campaign funds, we have more than 15 additional projects in progress. We could never have protected so much significant land in the Methow Valley at such a fast pace without the campaign. The campaign’s impact on our organization may be less subtle to the external eye, but its influence is deep. The campaign taught us how to reach out to our community and bring people together around the one thing we all love – the land of the Methow Valley. It gave us a chance to be bold in our visioning and courageous in our fundraising. The Mo Glo easement protects riparian habitat and farmland on Twisp River Rd. From land protection to stewardship, to education and even the way we run our board meetings, we have grown and changed as an organization through the campaign process. Most of all, we’ve been reminded of our incredible fortune to work to protect the Methow Valley – a beautiful place matched by an incredible community of residents and visitors who believe they can make a difference in a place they love. Wildflowers and sunshine are abundant at our Naturalist Retreats. Thank you for making all of this possible! Last year’s alpine wildflower hike on the Maple Pass Loop. 14 T M C PS: Speaking of thank you’s - our plans for our permanent Imagine the Methow Donor Tribute continue to progress. We have a beautiful design, including the names of all campaign donors and a striking wood relief carving by local artist Bruce Morrison. The tribute will be just south of our building, right off the Methow Conservancy deck. We are awaiting more information on the pedestrian bridge and trail construction underway right now, however, before we place the tribute. We’ll keep you posted and stay tuned for an invite to our unveiling! .. R A .. PO B , W, W We Need YOU ~ Your Support Matters!
