THIS THE P~GE P~GE James L. Chapman, who we have mentioned in previous issues, was in the St. Louis area in May; and was good enough to spend some time with us. The purpose of his trip to the area from Washington state was to search for informtion on his ancestors in Crawford County, Missouri. Part of his branch of the family that started with WILLIAM CHAPMAN in New London, Connecticut came by way of New York and Pennsylvania to Missouri. In an account of the MARVIN CHAPMAN family that settled in Missouri (Published in HISTORY OF FOREST HILLS by McCormick) it says: "His (Simeon) son, (seventh generation) Marvin was born September 18, 1797 in Seneca County, New York. Here on May 13, 1824 he married Elizabeth Campbell of the same county." Writing of his visit and his recent findings, Jim Chapman said the following: "One of the things that intrigues me is the claim that Marvin was born and raised in Seneca County, New York. The biography of Simeon Chapman, Marvin's brother and my g-ggrandfather, states that he was born in Pike County, Pennsylvania, where their grandfather Uriah Chapman had settled in 1774. If both claims are true, their parents must have moved from Pennsylvania to New York and back again after Marvin's birth, then Marvin went back to New York to get married. Or perhaps Simeon was born on a visit home." More on page 9 Richard Newkirk of Hyattsville, Md suggested that we list those of our- surname who l'JereIi!:itedas casual ties on the Viet Nam Memorial in Washington D. C. He even volunteered to visit the memori al and photograph the r,ecessary documents to get the information. The following are' some comments taken from the letter he sent with the list which follows it. In the preface of the book published in 1854, Rev. F. W. Chapman gives us some background on the preparation that went into the book. The following is a slightly paraphrased version of part of his preface. It took seven years to collect and prepare the material for the book. At the time he entered upon the task, the compiler had no conception of the amount of labor which would be required in collecting and arranging a genealogical table of the descendants of Robert Chapman. Nor was it supposed, when the offer was generously made by one of his descendants, to print and distribute a copy of the work gratis, to all the living descendants, that it would be anything more than a pamphlet of forty or fifty pages, at the most. It was soon found, however, that the descendants were so numerous and scattered throughout all the states of the Union, that a much longer time would be required to obtain returns from them, at all satisfactory, than was at first contemplated. The task was a laborious one, consuming not less than onethird of the author's waking hours for seven years, accompanied by small pecuniary expense, in traveling from place to place to examine records, and in postage, stationery, etc. About thirteen hundred letters have been written, more than one hundred burial grounds visited, and the records of more than forty towns thoroughly searched, and not a less number of probate, church, and parish records examined. The oldest and largest libraries of New England were consulted, to gather up whatever could be obtained of historical interest in regard to the Chapman family. He goes on to explain why we will find some incomplete records, talks about the generation that was born during preparation and warns that, careful as he was, the work still contains some error. He then proceeds for about two pages to recognize some of the very distinguished persons, Chapmans and otherwise, who helped in the preparation of the volume. While most of the Chapmans seem to be in New England, the book does include those who moved to other parts of the country, and those recognized for helping were from Alabama, Ohio and New York. UNLIKE THE BOOK, ~HICH PUBLISHED THE F~MILIES ~ND DESCEND~NTS OF E~CH OF ROBERTS SIX CHILDREN SEP~R~TELY. ~E PLAN TO MERGE THEM ~LL TOGETHER, GENER~TION BY GENERATION. IN THIS FIRST SEGMENT OF THE SERIES HE WILL DE~L ONLY ~ITH ROBERT ~ND HIS CHILDREN, OR THE FIRST ~ND SECOND GENER~TIONS. WE WILL BEGIN THE THIRD GENER~TION IN ~ LPTER ISSUE. Nothing, definite, is known of Robert Chapman, previous to his emigration to this country. According to family tradition, he came from Hull in England to Boston, in 1635, from which place he sailed in company of Lyon Gardiner, for Say-Brook, November 3, as one of the company of twenty men, who were sent by Sir Richard Saltonstall, to take posession of a large tract of land, and make settlements, near the mouth of the Connecticut River, under the patent of Lord Say and Seal. He is supposed to have been about eighteen years of age. After the Indians were subdued, deeming it safe to form plantations at a distance from the fort, they proceeded to clear up the forests and form a permanent settlement. For about ten years after leaving England, according to a tradition in the family, he kept a journal. It is to be regretted that, about twelve years after the establishment of the fort, it was burned, and the records of those who occupied it were lost. That he was a man of influence, in the town of Say-Brook, is evident from the fact, that, for many years, he held the office of town-clerk, and clerk of Oyster River quarter, and filled many other important stations. He was for many years commissioner for Say-Brook, and was elected as their deputy to the General Court, forty-three times, and assistant nine times~ He was, therefore, a member of the legislature of the state at more sessions than any other man, from the settlement of Say-Brook, to the present (1854) time. He was deputy to the General Court, which set at Hartford, according to the colony records. The colony records also show that each of his three sons were representatives to the legislature: the eldest, twenty-two sessions; the second one, eighteen sessions; the third, twenty-fou~ sessions. Robert Chapman seems to have been a soldier. Lieut. Col Gardiner, in his "History of the Pequot War," speaks of him as a sentinel in a skirmish on the neck, Feb. 22d, 1637, with the Indians, and once a~ engaged in beating samp. (sic) It appears, from the records of SayBrook, that Robert Chapman, was a very large landholder, in the towns of Say-Brook and East Haddam. He also owned a very large tract of land, in Hebron, leaving at his decease, to each of his three sons, fifteen hundred acres in that town. . There is some doubt as to the town, in England, where Robert was born. Some suppose it was HUll, the place where he embarked. Others suppose that although he embarked from Hull, which was one of the shipping ports, he was a native of Kent. It was the full belief of Rev. F. W. Chapman, the compiler, that he was a native of Yorkshire, and that his father's name w~s either Joh~ or Robert, and most likely the latter. IN ~ NOTE ON HER F~MILY GROUP RECORD FOR ROBERT. We hope to be able to include them in the Novembe~ issue. 11646 Do~sett Road Ma~yland Heights, MO 63043 (314) 291-8188 You will find more and less in this issue. You will find more Chapman Exchange, and therefore are hearing from more Chappies, and you will find more Data Bank. We have a rule of thumb that says a data bank print should never take more than half the newsletter or 13 pages. Since this one needed only 14 pages we went with it rather than splitting it into two segments as we did with the C-file. If we continue to split them, I am afraid we will not live long enough to print through the Z names. You will find fewer special articles. We introduced a new family with the family charts and family sketches. It is our most involved family, or the biggest family or whatever you want to call the one with the most descendants among our Chappies. This is the family of Robert Chapman, born about 1616. By doing it as a serial we will probably require as much time as all the data bank will require. Our general plan is to include segments from one pUblished family and one segment taken from the family group sheets sent by you, such as the Ralph Chapman family. We are working on the printing of as complete a listing as possible on the Chapmans in 1790. Not only does it list the family heads, but for the states where available, it provides the count of males in their two age groups, the females and the slaves. These are totaled for each state. In those cases where 1790 census records do not exist, we will use the best information available as r-econstructed from tax records. We have completed this project on our Alford and Newkirk lines and were able to print the total results in the newsletter. I suspect the Ch~pman list will take the majority of the space in one of the newsletters. We are doing this just for you. We need to know if you would prefer to have it printed in the newsletter, taking most or all of the space but going to all subscribers without any further cost to them; or wOLIld you prefer we keep the newsletter ~s it is, and print the 1790 census separately, charging for the cost of printing and mailing. If we do the latter, it may exceed the $3.00 cost of the newsletter as we are losing money on each newsletter. Please let us know your preference. The newsletter and the 1790 census is being done specifically for you and for no other purpose. Well, we reached a major milestone in that we mailed out our first family directory last month. We plan to do an annual directory for Chapman, Alford and Newkirk, starting all of them this year. I have done lots of dumb things, but I don't know why I chose to do the most difficult directory first. We have far more Chappies and different Chapman lines than we have in the other two families. We had it just about ready to print in tinal form and I goofed with a computer command and wiped out about 100 of the 700 records. Looking back now, it seems it might have been just about as easy to rebuild all 700 records as it was to determine which 100 I zapped and replace them. Needless to say, in my effort to reconstruct the files I let a few errorE slip in, but none serious that we know about. Finally I messed up on the page numbers, and the print shop was in the process of printing before they noticed that most of the nu~iliers were coming on the inside corner, next to the binding, rather than on the outside corner Wherf? t.hey belong. In spite of the few problems and errors we made. we believe we have a fantastic Chapman· family reference. Of course we use our copy many times every day. It has not. been out long enough to get much feedback, in fact we have heard from only two so far, but here is what they saidl "I'm impressed' What a beautiful. compilation and format., and what 'J. tremendous amount of work it represents. found no errorB in the entries personal to me. CHAPMAN DATA BANK D--FILE Seginning on the facing page, and continuing for the rest of this issue is the data bank print out on most of the Chapmans in our records whose first names begin with a "D." We sort of overloaded this issue wit.h the data bank as we hate to break up the alphabetical files into two segments printed in two issues. Several of you have commented on the difficulty you have with this format. To help you we have e)o: panded on the headi ng or 1egend at the top of each page of the printout. We are returning to the technique used in an earlier issue with an explanation for each of the three lines. It is important to understand that each record consists of three lines of data, or space for data, and a number that preceeds the three lines. It is also important to understand that the format is just like a blank form, and whether there is data available or not. the computer leaves space for it. I bel i~ve it is the gaps caused by the missing data that causes most of the confusion. We are hoping that you can send inFormation tb fill many of the gaps. the For those who are not familiar with format and for those who have trouble with it, we wi 11 Iead you through another e}:ampl e in this issue. Lets use record number 149 on as page 18 as our example as it is about complete as any in this issue. As we go through the example, keep one eye on the heading at the top of the page so you will see how it can gUide you. We find that in reading a record it is best to just scan the three names on the three lines on the left of the record. In the example we would see that our Chapman is a David, he married Anna Percival and he was the child of (c/o) Thomas and Rebecca (Todd) Chapman. As we noted Anna Per-cival we al so noted a number 1 to the left of her name which means she was the first wife of more than one that David had. (Looking down to record 150 we see the other wife with a 2 in front of her name.) Having seen who we are talking about, lets see what we know about them. The Chapmans vital statistics are mostly on the top line. David was born in the year 1791 on Oetobel" 25 in Warren CL"lLlnty, ~~entucky. He died 1884 on OetL-:lber 20 in Warren County, Kentucky. He is buried in Bowling Green (we list the name oof cemetery when known) which is in Warren County, Kentucky. To get his marr iaqe date too the spouse 1iste!d. drop down to the second line just under Bowling Green and you will find the date of the marriage which is 1811 on September 2 alsp in Warren County, Kentucky. To learn about the spouse of the Chapman, Anna in this case, we go to the second line and we find her birth and death dates and places immediately below those of D~vids, and of course the marriage data is the same for both of them. The third line actually has three it, the first being the names things of the parents. We never waste space showlng the f.ther w.s a Chapman and we always try to show the mothe;"s mai.den name. On th€! -far right:.0+ the third line of this record is TKS 002 which means the Chappie with a code of TkS sent us the information, and it is on page 2 of his file. (We use an as~ortment of pagelfile numbering systems so nothing other than the Chappi.es code is siognificant to you.) 1+ the data came from a book the reference begins ~,ith a number followed by a "S" as will be noted several times on page 18. The numbers follo~ing the .0_B are the page numbers of the book on which the data was +ound, and are significant in the case of book references. A complete list of book codes and Chap~ie codes is printed in the Chapman directory. ~Qt shown on the third line of this e>:ample is an "other l,<vEmt"which is somet.imes used. Look ~~t roecor-d145 and you see a "W 1780 NC CHAT" which means his will dated 1780 in Chatham County, NC. A complete list (Jf th,a "other event." codes, such as the Ware also in the directory. A f~~ of these records corre,:t or e)o:plain .. need some comment to #8 & 9 we have shown the place of marriage in the d,lte of marri 11gB spaces and di d nDot c"otch our mostake until too late to change. #181 the date o-f birth of David B. should not the 14th month as shown. be IBOBO·H8, #37 1, 38 The e>:plImati on here is about the fathel' of David, Josl?ph. He is thfa Joseph about which there is a great deal of contr-over-sy as to his father- and Chapman Iineaqe. Two or- more Chapman accoun1:s publi,;hed in the 19th century show him with diffet°ent parents. You may have all~eady noted our comments on him :in ear-lier-issues, and you ar-e stlr'eto see some in the futuroe. #154 is a composite record from three dioHeroent sourceS. George S. Roberts' Genea, ogy of Joseph Peck, 1955 shows the place of birth to be Montgomery County and death about 1845 as printed in the data bank.. Ray Chapmiln shows the place of birth to be Giles County and death about 1861. The county diffe'oence is probably explained by the fact that "t about this time, Giles was established as a COLmt y t.akinq part of the 01 d Montgomeroy (and othero) count.y. Peggy Kowalski has a differoent spelling for David's wife, showir,q it. to be Cartmill rather than Cartmel, and Peggy was the source of the marriage date. #195 The date of birth shown is ofl'°qmTelm Chapm",n'!!I manuscript Our Chapman Kin, but a date of November 18 1958 is given in a Swoffc.rd family book, part of which Wil'(5 sent to us by Roseanna Ratliff. #244 The information printed in the record was !Eubmitted by Thoma!!!W. Seim. The 1854 published account by Rev. F. W. Chapman shows Delig~t$ mothers maiden name to ~e Carver not Carl~iEr.
