KENYA
An Introductory Umpires Course was held in Kenyatta Stadium, Kisumu– Kenya from the 30th of June
to the 01st of July 2011. 17 participants attended the course which was conducted by David
Odhiambo.
New kids on the block in cricket development in Kenya, Kisumu County is where the latest umpiring
course to be conducted by Cricket Kenya was held on Thursday and Friday at the Kenyatta
grounds. They had 17 entrants who turned up to bring themselves up to speed with the latest
techniques in officiating cricket.

Kisumu town continues to benefit immensely on the programmes conducted by the National body
and previously had two-introductory to cricket courses as well as the successful inaugural six-a-side
cricket tournament for the secondary schools in the municipality.
Having completed those processes, of course new challenges emerged with the hosting of the
inaugural six-a-side event, where officiating revolved around the chosen few, while the rest could
only sit and watch events unfold. An enormous task for just a few hands to handle a whole day’s
event and there surfaced a necessity to hold an introductory course on umpiring, though initially
planned but then it beckoned that more people needed the basic knowledge to perform official
duties in matches involving their schools.
The introductory syllabus covered a good 27 laws of the game that are necessary for beginners on
law enforcement in cricket. Umpiring video clips were employed in a bid to assist the participants
with a better understanding to the interpretations of the laws.
Commendable was the active participation of this group throughout the learning process that
made sure those discussions were helpful in their efforts to up-skill in the adjudication side of the
game. The group took the opportunity to laud the National body for the efforts it’s making in
uplifting the standards of the game and especially the chance being accorded to them.
-----------------------------------------------------------The cricket administrators program on Finance was held on the 02nd of July 2011 by David
Odhiambo and brought together a total of 17 participants mostly from the teaching fraternity
within Nakuru town and its environs.
Covered in details were the uses of different cash recording systems including receipts, petty cash
and cashbooks and explanation provided on their importance in relation to accountability
processes. The participants were taken through the processes of budget preparation and were
reminded to ensure that those budgets are then linked to their strategic plans.
The course covered basic book keeping strategies to assist cricket administrators to develop skills
relating to budgeting and financial reporting.

The position of the treasurer was identified as one that requires good organisation, honest and
trustworthy individuals due to the sensitivity of their job. The attendees also learnt and discussed in
details the different sources of income for different entities and the expenditure areas. Achieving a
balanced budget where expenditure is funded by income is the best way to keep afloat and
ensure sustainability.
-----------------------------------------------------------A Level A Introductory Course for Umpires was held in Kenya from the 08th – 09th July 2011. 10
participants attended the course.
Umpiring courses have been coming thick and fast during this period across the country but that is
due to the fact that the cricket session has just commenced or is just about to commence in most
of the regions that run their usual cricket leagues in Kenya and this one in Mombasa brought
together 10 participants from the teaching and cricketing fraternity.
Participants went through the umpire introductory phase and were using this gathering as an
opportunity to step up their knowledge on the game with the remainder of the laws and make the
crucial jump to a more recognizable level.
Much of the challenge still lies ahead in the field, but this lot of novice umpires can stake claim that
they have been armed with the necessary information to begin their aspirations on the umpiring
front.
Umpiring decisions carry significant effects on matches and henceforth have to be well thought of
before they are executed and therefore the needs to have an in depth look at each and every
one of them. There is nothing certain in the occurrences on the field of play, and the new recruits
were well instructed to ensure that each and every delivery received their full attention to ensure
that they make sound judgment based on facts before them.

Kutub Gulamabbas – a member of the Associates and Affiliates umpires’ panel for Africa, took the
time to make a valuable 90-minute presentation on his specialty ‘the D/L method’. He covered
both the standard and professional editions of the system and answered relevant questions while
giving examples from previous matches. Ultimately, the attendees took a test on the laws where
they performed slightly above average.
-----------------------------------------------------------The Coast province cricket tournament for primary schools was successfully completed at Coast
Gymkhana on Friday 29th July, 2011 in Mombasa, Kenya. After four days of intense competition
amongst a quartet of top state schools from the coastal city, Ronald Ngala primary school
emerged champions after beating Ziwani Boys by 9 runs via a super-over decider after the best of
three finals ended in a stalemate.
(Winning Team of Ronald Ngala Primary School)
Challenging the victors for the prestigious title was the trio of Serani primary, Ziwani Boys and a
combined Fahari/Sparki schools outfit.

The first of these finals went right to the wire, when after 15 overs of tough competition, Ziwani boys
and Ronald Ngala settled for 32 runs apiece. It meant that honours were shared as the second
final beckoned; Ronald Ngala ceased the initiative to take the next step towards the title by
outsmarting opponents Ziwani Boys 50 runs to 30 runs to beat their arch-rivals by 20.
The best of three finals had now been shared one to one and it needed the delightful influence of
the ‘super-over’ to separate the two protagonists. But defending champions Ronald Ngala were
not going to be denied their place at the podium; they began the final hurdle event every bit like
title holders, taking the early initiative to score 9 runs of the single over eliminator before keeping it
so tight to deny neighbors Ziwani Boys an opportunity to register any score on the board from all six
deliveries.
The best bowler’s award went to A. Swaleh who registered 82 runs off 9 innings and M. Bakari’s
effort of 26 wickets conceding only 39 runs in 12 overs bowled, earned the youngster, the
accolade of being crowned the best bowler in public institutions at the coast.

are an example to other players. He is now an extremely experienced and accomplished player
who can set the standards on and off the field for others to aspire to.
-----------------------------------------------------------New Zealander Mike Hesson has been appointed as the new coach of the Kenyan national team.
The 36-year-old is widely regarded as one of the best young coaches in the game and has been

massive 80-run stand between Byron and Rangan for the 3rd wicket brought the contest alive,
raising the Master Blasters’ hope. Both batsmen batted smartly and kept the required run rate. The
turning point of the game came in the 12th over when Rangan was dismissed after scoring 30 runs
with 3 fours.
The game went down to the wire with Master Blasters requiring 11 runs off the last over as the
