In handing out the award, Australian Clean Beaches judge Averil Bones said, "Waverley Council’s investment in water conservation, particularly its scale and success is very impressive." Mayor of Waverley, Cr Sally Betts, was excited by the news of the win and said the award was very deserving, "Our staff work hard to plan and implement strategies to conserve our natural resources so future generations of residents can enjoy what we have". Waverley Council won the National award after winning the Keep New South Wales Beautiful Blue Stars Clean Beaches state title in December 2014, riding ahead of 18 other finalists. Waverley’s nomination for the awards was supported by several environmental projects, including stormwater, coastal, and waste management initiatives, and biodiversity conservation designed to preserve our marine species and maintain the quality of the sea water and surrounding flora. Predominantly, the award was given for Council’s Bondi Stormwater Harvesting Scheme, constructed in 2012, with funding support from NSW Government’s Climate Change Fund. The Scheme treats and supplies over 50 million litres of stormwater per year, delivering recycled water for irrigation, toilets and public cleaning at Bondi Beach, conserving water, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, saving money and improving water quality. Other than being one of Australia’s iconic beaches, Bondi and the surrounding foreshore plays host to a number of cultural and artistic events every year, including Sculpture by the Sea, Festival of the Winds and the Bondi Beach Winter Ice Rink. For full terms and conditions visit sydneycitytoyota.com.au. fashion with Courtney Jones stevie may spring 2015 Byron Bay designer, Cassie Vecchione of bohemian label, Stevie May delivered an undeniably charming collection aptly titled 'First Bright' for spring 2015. Earthy neutrals embodying nomadic luxe reigned supreme. The peasant folklore muse took us on an exotic journey; think globetrotting adventures to the likes of Peru, Morocco and Guatemala with organically textured raw linens, Ikat prints and whispers of sensual lace playing a starring role throughout. Key pieces included the 'Palace Nights Maxi Dress', a nonchalant, floral, wraparound maxi dress which was punctuated by shades of butterscotch, lady bug red, midnight and duck egg blue. The undulating pattern also graced languid Palazzo pants, a flirtatious playsuit and a free flowing maxi skirt. Quintessential bohemian wardrobe staples for the deluxe hippie. Ikat was very much in attendance and highlighted the 'Diptera Top' and 'Ikat Mini Skirt'. Other garments to feature the bold graphic print included an open neckline, long sleeve mini dress, kaftans, panelled maxi dresses and kimonos. Technical fabrics and hand painted prints brimmed with pulchritude. Monochromatic Ikat looks were fused with denim accents. Pattern lace evoked dark romance, “From the shadows saunters a freshness” stated Vecchione. The 'San Antonio Maxi Dress' channelled just that with sheer panels of obsidian lace igniting the come-hither number. A deep décolletage and fine ebony tie featured on the neckline while the dress flowed freely in relaxed proportions. Other covert worthy items comprised of the 'Run Carolyn Kimono' and the 'Don't Tassel With Me' dress which displayed gold embroidery, rustic fringed hemlines in shades of oatmeal with raw effects dominating the tailored gypsy effect. Isabel Marant devotees will rejoice over the 'Coral Garden Top' and skirt twinset. The structured, hand painted, navy grazing shell complete with ivory tassels was teamed to a drop waist flounce mini. With an affordable price point, attain the famed Marant signature look for less. Surrender to your sensuous side. Walk the Stevie May way. Stevie May is available online at www. steviemay.com.au, Myer Bondi Junction and selected boutiques throughout Sydney. 1. LIBRA You might find yourself lost in a wave of nostalgic day dreaming this week, Libra. Take a little time to consider the good times, reflect deeply on the bad, and pull the lessons of your past into the now to solve some more current concerns. Time talking to an acquaintance you haven't been close to may lead to a much more solid friendship in the process. SCORPIO You're beginning to see some things come to the front of the line, in terms of problems, Scorpio. Don't allow them to weigh you down, but rather, tackle them each in turn: don't try to solve everything this week. Communication with others needs to be clear and kind, so that you are not misunderstood and so that you are better able to work things out to everyone's best advantage. SAGITTARIUS You may be feeling just a bit more traditional than usual, Sagittarius. This may throw off others who are used to your more innovative sparks of inspiration. Be sure that people understand you this week as Jupiter in Virgo may be pushing you to focus on the details a bit more than usual. CAPRICORN You may be starting to feel the glow of optimism these days, fellow goats- about time, right? Hold on to those feelings and allow them to motivate you in terms of organizing your time, better. Don't put off tasks no matter how tempting the distractions along the way may be, and you will thank yourself for this later. AQUARIUSYou may feel distracted and a little off your game this week,Aquarius, as Jupiter in Virgo really begins to reveal small details that make you think about things much deeper. Do yourself a big favor, take a step back, a deep breathe and do not react. Whatever criticisms you have, turn them over in your mind before letting them fly. Don't let your words damage the hearts of others this week. PISCES This week, it may be a good idea for you to note some recurring patterns in your life and to take responsibility for your own emotional responses. Rather than blaming others for what you feel, empower yourself to recognize that your reactions are the bigger issue at play, and adjust your thoughts and actions accordingly. BLINDS INSTALLER CAT OF THE WEEK week, more so than usual. There are still yet some things going on: be careful with your loved ones and co-workers, Aries. Your restlessness and feeling held back may not be anything actual, and shoving people away right now is just not advised. TAURUS You needed a little bit of time to clear your head, Taurus- don't think this put you behind. You needed to rest up and recharge. Give yourself the space to calm and centre, rather than trying to push through the blahs for now. As you do this, put things into place in an organized way and make sure you delegate tasks responsibly, rather than thinking you can tackle it all. Time spent with the loved ones is really best now. GEMINI It may seem as though all sorts of things from the past are springing to mind these days, Gemini: and this can be a wonderful thing. Though the usual annoyances this cycle can bring are hitting, you hum through with a smile on your face as happier times are brought to mind and indicating that the future looks quite bright. CANCER Dreams and plans are at the front of your mind, as well they should be, Cancer. Keep yourself busy working on them, and don't sweat the small stuff or listen to office gossip. You will find the better you plan and organize, the better things go: so take this time to balance all those new ideas with some wonderful warm times with those you care about. A surprise call from the past may have you thinking in a new direction. LEO Seek out a better balance for home and work life and you'll find the support and encouragement you need helps smooth things over. Though your to do list is miles long, be sure to pencil in time with those nearest and dearest to you: egos may be a bit more fragile this week, including yours and balance may prevent shattered hearts. VIRGO That energy you have been feeling seems to be picking up the pace and rocking you to your core, Virgo. Rather than continue to push ahead in a rush, however, give yourself a little time to plan this out with much more meticulous detail. Because this cutie pie is as quiet as a mouse, she’s hoping her forever home will be on the quiet side too or at least have some “safe spaces” where she can retreat to. We met during his “infamous” 1974 tour of Australia when he was declared “black” by the unions. I negotiated on his behalf with the then head of the ACTU, Bob Hawke and the rest is history. They even made a feature film on the incident that was based more on fantasy than fact! Mr Sinatra took me to the United States on his private jet as a thank you. I finished up staying over ten years and we became good friends. Now we celebrate his birth, 100 years ago. If you are a Sinatra – Big Band fan, don’t miss The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra direct from the USA, the band that made Frank Sinatra a star, in their first trip ever to Australia, will be performing at venues throughout Australia. The concert under Music Director Terry Myers features one of America's finest singers from the Frank Sinatra Songbook, Bryan Anthony along with 20 musicians, singers and dancers performing all The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra's Hits and more, a sentimental journey down memory lane. theatre REVIEW On seeing the Tommy Dorsey band in 1937 it's a known fact that Frank Sinatra told his wife Nancy" "See the singer guy? One day I'll be sitting where he's sitting". It is widely accepted that Frank Sinatra learned a lot from Tommy Dorsey, especially the technique of breathing. Another thing Frank Sinatra learned from Tommy Dorsey was focusing on the words. Both Sinatra and Dorsey went on to record lots of beautiful songs like "The Sky Fell Down", "Too Romantic", "I'll Be Seeing You", "Polka Dots And Moonbeams", "Fools Rush In", "I'll Never Smile Again", "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You", "Stardust", "Oh Look At Me Now", "Without A Song" and many more. Frank Sinatra made 80 recordings from 1940 to 1942. Frank Sinatra's career blossomed with Tommy Dorsey, and with Sinatra's vocals, the band became more successful than ever. Not to be missed by Frank Sinatra lovers, or anyone who appreciates the great music of the Big Bands. My son is graduating this weekend and receiving his Rabbinic degree. He studied in an international program that was based in Pretoria. We are only here for a week and we decided that we can’t leave without trying to see the “big five” (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo) so we came here for a day. This afternoon we went out on a three hour game drive. What we saw was incredible. You know all those colourful animals on Lion King – Impala Wildebeest, Steenbok and Hyena – all there including white rhinos. We didn’t see any lions yet, but we came upon their tracks. Maybe tomorrow morning on the dawn drive we will see Lions and Giraffes. But what was the highlight of this afternoon? The elephants. At first we saw just a few, but we turned a corner and found ourselves in the middle of a herd of elephants. On the left were two baby elephants. Really small. Scurrying up a hill eating as they went. On the right of us, about 20 metres ahead was a large elephant with a calf suckling from it. The mother was pushing over a tree to get some more food with baby (!) attached. We watched for a while, this incredible sight of one of the largest animals on the planet tending to it's young. Our open topped van inched a few metres forward and the driver turned off the engine hoping to remain unnoticed. It didn’t work and the elephant sensed our presence and took it as a threat. She immediately moved into action. She swung round putting herself in between us and her child. The ranger driving our van waited a moment to see what would happen and the elephant lifted its trunk and took a few quick steps toward us as her protective instincts switched into top gear. Thankfully, just as quickly the ranger turned on the engine and we reversed out of there. This was no trip to the zoo – this was real – and the adrenalin rush with the tinge of fear was the highlight of the drive. When you go to the zoo, the animals are in your habitat so they are behind bars and we walk freely. Out here, we are behind the bars of the van because we are the strangers in their habitat. There are no words to describe nature in all its glory other than it fills you with a sense of awe and amazement at God’s creation. On the way back it was already night and the ranger had a huge search light with which we could see. The light came to rest on a rhino and the ranger immediately shut it off. We asked him to turn it back on so we could see and he told us they weren’t allowed to shine the light on rhinos in case there were poachers on the hills who would see where the rhino was. You see there are people who will pay $30,000 for rhino horn and poachers slaughter the rhinos just to take their horns. God gave us the most extraordinary gift, planet Earth. He told Adam and later Noah to be fruitful and multiply, fill the Earth and rule over it. We humans, the pinnacle of all creation, were made rulers and stewards of this Earth. So what do we do? We become malevolent dictators. We destroy the forests of the Amazon, we pollute the rivers of China, and we fill the air of Asia with the smoke of burning trees. We deplete our natural resources and drive species after species into extinction all in pursuit of control of the world and the unholy dollar. As with every dictatorship all that is left behind in the end is suffering and destruction. While we simply cannot compare environmental destruction to the woes of human suffering and the alleviation of human suffering must always be our highest priority, our responsibility to the environment cannot be forgotten. This world and all of nature in it are too beautiful to be allowed to disappear. "CATS" purrrfect at Capitol Theatre The acclaimed West End revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record breaking musical, CATS, is coming to Australia following its triumphant London season. Opening on 30 October this year, Sydney’s Capitol Theatre in the Haymarket will be home to this brilliant song and dance spectacular, complete with dazzling choreography and stunning costumes. CATS is a brilliant song and dance spectacular, featuring an oversized set, superb score, inspired choreography and costumes. Composed by the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber, CATS’ magnificent musical score has been recorded by over 150 artists from Barbra Streisand and Johnny Mathis to Liberace and Barry Manilow. Based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the production is set amongst a junkyard playground that is alive with our favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks. The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year, the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life. Delta Goodrem will play the coveted role of Grizabella in Sydney and will sing the poignant hit song “Memory”, one of the most famous songs from the musical. The 2015 Olivier Award nominated CATS introduces a rapping ‘street cat’ who performs some amazing breakdancing moves, in the famous Rum Tum Tugger role. Andrew Lloyd Webber said “I’ve come to the conclusion that having read Eliot again, maybe Eliot was the inventor of rap”. The hit revival was reworked for the most recent season in the West End by the original creative team of Director Trevor Nunn, Choreographer & Associate Director Gillian Lynne, Set Designer John Napier and Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. One of the longest running shows in the history of the West End and Broadway, CATS’ world premiere was held in 1981 at the New London Theatre, where it played for 21 record breaking years and almost 9,000 performances. The ground-breaking production was the winner of the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Musical. In 1983 the Broadway production became the recipient of seven Tony awards including Best Musical and ran for 18 years. Since its world premiere, CATS has been presented in over 30 countries, translated into 15 languages and seen by more than 73 million people worldwide. Both the original London and Broadway cast recordings won Grammy Awards for Best Cast Album. This exciting annual event celebrates all things sustainable with stalls, workshops, entertainment and activities for the whole family. As a unique addition to the event this year, we’re hosting a ‘Conversations for the Future’ panel where a number of our young, future leaders will tell us briefly how they would like to see Randwick City’s environment in the years to come. We are calling on students in years 4-6 to submit to us their thoughts on environmental ‘hot topics’ such as eco systems, energy savings, water savings and recycling. An update on the Bondi Junction cycleways At the Council meeting on 18 August, we resolved that Council would run design workshops with RMS, Transport for NSW, NSW Police, Sydney Buses, as well as relevant traffic and urban design experts, for solutions to the cycling access issues in Bondi Junction, specifically around Bronte Road, Denison Street and Oxford Street in front of the bus depot. At the same time we are investigating Syd Einfield Drive as an alternate or additional route. A Council workshop will then consider the results of the design workshops. I am confident that we will be able to decide upon a cycleway route that is in the best interests for all our residents and visitors, and enable the transformation of Bondi Junction into the most sustainable, liveable and vibrant urban centre in Sydney. Fifth Estate Surround Sound Sustainable Precincts Earlier this month I was invited to be a part of a panel exploring the challenges currently facing the development of sustainable precincts. I was joined on the panel by leading innovators, developers and government representatives from various organisations such as the Committee for Sydney, AECOM, Flow Systems, UrbanGrowth, and Infrastructure NSW. We explored solutions to facilitate developing sustainable, viable and resilient communities; and how this could be funded. I’d like to reassure residents that we are still fighting hard to save our Woollahra. Woollahra Council is part of a much bigger campaign which is coming through the Sydney Metropolitan Mayors and representing those councils and communities opposed to forced amalgamation. We will participate in whatever activities are deemed necessary to bring our community's opposition to the forced amalgamation of Woollahra to the attention of the Minister for Local Government, the Premier and his Cabinet. If we need to we will march through the streets in protest and host a rally in Steyne Park. Amalgamation brings no benefits to Woollahra. We have achieved all of the financial benchmarks required to ensure that we can stand alone and will continue the fight to save our local community. By now you will have received an information pack on why we can and will stand alone. We will also personally operate information stalls across the municipality starting very soon. This will provide you with any further information and allow you to make your position on amalgamation known to us. There will be an opportunity for you to sign a hard copy of the petition at the councillor manned stalls. In the interim, if you would like to register your opposition to the amalgamation of Woollahra please visit www.change.org/p/savewoollahra-council. These grants will assist Local Councils right across NSW in a range of measures to tackle littering and illegal dumping including: Installing prevention equipment in identified hot-spots, Funding enforcement and surveillance efforts, Delivering educational campaigns to deter dumping, and Identifying hotspots of illegal dumping activity. Waverley Council was awarded $20,000 in funding for Bulky Waste Management. “This funding will allow Waverley Council staff will gather illegal dumping data, with staff being provided with smartphones or tablets to support this process”. “They will also receive training in how to enter illegal dumping data into the new NSW EPA illegal dumping database RID online”. “The public will also be encouraged to report illegal dumping incidents. RID online will analyse this data, providing maps of dumping hotspots and reports on dumping trends. This analysis will inform the design of future prevention strategies and education campaigns,” Mr Notley-Smith said. Environment Minister Mark Speakman said illegal dumping caused harm to the environment, cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in clean-up fees each year and was unsightly. “As part of the Waste Less, Recycle More initiative the NSW Government has dedicated $58 million over five years to combat illegal dumping with a combination of education, prevention methods and enforcement,” Mr Speakman said. “We would encourage Local Councils and other community groups right across my community to continue to apply for these grants which are available thanks to the NSW Government’s Waste Less, Recycle More initiative,” Ms Upton said. “The NSW Government really wants to equip communities to tackle litter,” Ms Upton concluded. Nominations are accepted all year round but are due by Saturday 31 October if they are to be considered by the Plaque Committee for the next round of installations in early 2016. The Woollahra Council Plaque Scheme was launched in late 2012 and to date eight plaques have been unveiled in the municipality to honour local identities, including Sir John Robertson (who was Premier of NSW), Rudy Komon MBE (celebrated art dealer) and Dr Elwyn Lynn AM (artist and writer). “Woollahra has a proud history and it is important that we remember and celebrate our past and the achievements of prominent citizens who have helped shape our identity today,” said Councillor Anthony Marano, Chair of Woollahra’s Plaque Committee. “The scheme is driven by community suggestion and relies upon the public making interesting and viable proposals, so we’re encouraging people to put forward those people who they feel meet our criteria”, said Councillor Marano. There are two key criterias to be an eligible recipient of an honouring plaque. Firstly, a person must have been dead for ten years or have passed the centenary of their birth, whichever is the earlier, and have resided in the Woollahra Local Government area. Secondly, proposals will be considered for commemoration where significant historical or cultural events in the history of the Woollahra Municipality or Australia as a nation took place.
