It's possible to make some good progress in the game without really knowing what you're doing, but eventually you'll come to a roadblock. The result can be frustration until you figure out what you're doing http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_2.html (1 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:50:16 PM] View All 2 Monster Hunter 3 Walkthroughs » Cheats & Codes Unlockable: Offline Awards Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN wrong. This section of the guide is designed to let you know what you might do wrong before you even do it and to give you some information on best practices. We recommend reading through it before you get too far into the game, and we also encourage you to read through the instruction manual. Doing so can save you a lot of potential frustration down the road, particularly if you're new to the series. Unlockable: Online Awards Hint: Item Combinations View All Monster Hunter 3 Cheats » Combat More Game Help There are two types of warrior in Monster Hunter Tri: bowgun users and blademasters. Blademasters are your basic melee fighters. Though it might not seem like it at first, they'll likely have an easier time clearing the game because they can equip more powerful armor that makes it safe to get in close and really sock it to any monsters that happen to cross their paths. There are numerous weapon types at their disposal. Of particular interest are lances, which have a long range and allow for good defensive play, and switch axes that can charge up and change to a sword on the fly. Basic swords are also useful, since they allow for improved mobility, and hammers prove worthwhile because they make it easier to break certain parts of the enemy anatomy for item drops. Bowgun users appear to have things simpler at first. They can remain at a distance in many cases (though not too far) and pick off their enemies with elementallycharged shots. Weapons are assembled from three components: frame, shaft and stock. You can mix and match the pieces to create the desired effect, which will affect everything from rate of fire to the number of bullets that can be chambered at one time. Default ammunition is effective, but to get the most from a bowgun you'll need to purchase ammunition or combine common items to make it on your own. Heated battles also include frequent moments where you must stop and reload. This results in a defensive type of play that can make it difficult to quickly inflict enough damage to fell some boss monsters that you encounter later in the game. Beginning players are encouraged to stick with the blademaster character type, even early in the game where it's not as obviously dominant. This guide assumes that you'll be using melee weapons and suggest that you become intimate with lance-type weapons in particular. Once you settle on a weapon, the next challenge is to master available combination attacks. Your bowgun is capable of firing some bullet types in a rapid-fire manner if you mash the button, for instance. The lance can often produce three thrusts in rapid succession if you are quick with the buttons, plus the switch ax can produce a whole range of strikes that you'll need to see Character Upgrades The character upgrade system in Monster Hunter Tri is unique and some of its elements can be easy to miss if you're not paying attention. The most important thing to keep in mind is that stats aren't necessarily what they seem. Instead of going up levels from fighting monsters, as you would in a typical game of this sort, you'll rely on gear forged by the Wyverian Artisian to make you stronger. Each piece of armor has attributes that it ads or subtracts from your core setup. For instance, a piece of armor might improve your ice resistance by three but subtract one point's worth of fire resistance. If you assemble an entire suit of armor from that one type, you could wind up with powerful armor that adds 15 defense to ice but subtracts 5 defense from fire. So, what do those defense points mean? When an attack lands, the defense points could mean nothing. A dragon might breathe fire on you, for instance, and he might not do any more damage to you when you have -5 fire resistance than he would if you had 0 fire resistance. Suppose that you have -10 fire resistance, though. Then you could be in a world of hurt because the game applies thresholds to your elemental resistance. If you're a point shy of a threshold, you'll see no discernible effect at all, while meeting or exceeding the threshold will suddenly find you with greater (or worse) defense against a given element. Elemental resistance isn't the only area where that concept applies, either. There are various skills and boosts to other stats that you need to keep in mind. If you equip enough http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_2.html (2 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:50:16 PM] Show: ● ● Popular ● | ● Latest Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN in action to believe. Once you start a combo, though, you will often find yourself forced to ride it out even if you stop pressing the button and see a monster charging you that you would very much like to dodge. Before you start stringing together a bunch of attacks, make sure that you've aimed properly and that your foe will still be in place to take all of the damage that you are theoretically going to deal. Vitality-improving charms, for instance, you can increase the size of your life meter while that gear is equipped. Or perhaps you'll do something else and improve your ability to carry around heavy objects or to swim more quickly underwater or to run further without draining your stamina as much. There are dozens of potential boosts and all are determined by armor, talismans and decorations. Always pay close attention to stats. If you ever wonder what a threshold is for one attribute or another, by the way, just press and hold the 'B' button on your Wii Remote as you hover over '?' icons on the equipment screens. You will see a list of potential boosts and penalties. It gives you an idea of what to aim for, and potentially lets you know what you need to change so that the dragon you're fighting stops doing so much damage with his blazing breath. Combat comes down to a lot more than just dealing damage, however; you also need to be ready to go on the defensive when the situation calls for it (a frequent occurrence, you'll find). Your character moves fairly quickly when he doesn't have a weapon actively in use, but he slows significantly if you are dragging a lance, hammer, great sword or other such item around. You have to stop and put your gear away if you want to quickly retreat, a time expenditure that can be enough to leave you open for vicious attack by powerful monsters from which you may wish to flee. Quick movement, therefore, is best reserved for moments where you're trying to rush to get into position to attack. If you are trying to run from a battle, you'll want to wait until your foe is momentarily distracted, then put away your weapon and make a break for it. If you're near the edge of an area when you decide to do that, so much the better! As you battle, you'll find that certain actions deplete your stamina meter. Stamina is indicated by the yellow bar along the top of the screen. It drains if you run while weapons aren't equipped, it drains when you attack and it drains when you block attacks from powerful enemies. You can refill it by walking around at normal speed or by standing still. Your maximum stamina will slowly deplete as battles continue and can be refilled using items such as the Ration, or by using your grill to cook Raw Meat that you obtain by hacking up monsters that you have defeated. Even if you have a full and lengthy life meter, combat with particularly powerful monsters can be close to impossible if you let your stamina drop too low. Mind it carefully. Finally, you need to keep in mind that you have a shield. Know how to use it and know when to dodge instead. For most of the game's duration, your answer is to use the shield. If you hold it upright and face in the direction from which an attack is coming, your trusty shield can block almost anything that your enemies might throw at you. Skills are available to increase your defensive prowess, as well. Though you can dodge any attack that you face in the game, sometimes the best thing to do is stand your ground and then counter after you've deflected a lunge or other attack. Save dodges for sustained series of blows, such as a barrage of fireballs or a cloud of poisonous gas. As long as you put the above to good use and become a master of fleeing from battle when it isn't going your way (a lengthy run back to your base camp or just to the next screen to safely consume healing items is always preferable to a quick and painful death), you should be able to triumph over every last monster that you encounter. It won't necessarily be easy, just easier. You'll also want to bring a selection of pickaxes, nets, harpoons and bait with you as you explore regions. They allow you to find items through other means. Mining Mining is one of the most useful types of item gathering. You'll need a pickaxe of some sort. The material that you're working with is rough, so it's a good idea to bring along a lot of the iron ones (easily purchased in the market) or even some mega ones. Otherwise, you could run out of tools in the middle of your run. Generally, you'll find places to dig along walls in caves, or where you see lumps of rock out in the open. You'll probably have the most likely places memorized within a few hours. As you dig, you'll likely find a variety of items that can be used to produce powerful weapons. Some of the core ingredients can be quite rare. You might need to make 2 or 3 trips to an area to gather enough, and there might be only a point or two in a certain cave that yields what you're hoping to find. Bug Catching Though you might not suppose that insects would be very important, they actually serve as a core ingredient for various potions and such that you'll very likely want to have with you on tough quests. Some powerful equipment also requires you to find insects. As you move through a given area, just watch for butterflies hovering over patches of grass and shrubbery. You can dash over to where they are and use your net until they vanish. You'll usually get three to five insects from a given point. Many points in the game will yield the same few bugs, but there are special exceptions. Digging Digging requires no items and is easy. For the most part, you can dig where you see bone piles, either on ground or below the surface of the water. Monster dens often are a good place to dig, or along the side of fallen logs. Mushrooms also indicate a good place to dig, or flowers and cactus plants in the Sandy Desert area. Fishing There are two ways to fish. The most common method involves tackle, such as worms and crickets (both items that can often be found by digging). You can fish in shallow pools of water in the right environments, or by standing along the ocean shore. Underwater fishing is more like standard hunting. Certain swimming monsters (such as the Sharqs found in the Deserted Island environment) can be hit with your weapons to kill them. However, a better technique is to almost kill monsters using conventional means, then to skin them using the harpoon to deal a death blow. The harpoon can also be used throughout a fight to slowly inflict damage, but it's far less conventional than standard weapons. It also tends to break fairly quickly. http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_3.html (3 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:50:31 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN Back to Top Send FeedbackGuide ContentsItem Gathering & CombinationContinue Item Gathering & Combination » IGN.com: Editorial Staff | Review Guide | Send Us News | Sign Up for Email Updates Hot Games: Gears of War 3 | Batman: Arkham City | Dead Space 2 | Mass Effect 3 | LittleBigPlanet 2 | Top Searches International: Australia | Germany | Ireland | United Kingdom | United States By continuing past this page, and by your continued use of this site, you agree to be bound by and abide by the User Agreement. We appreciate that clearing the offline mode in Monster Hunter Tri can be a daunting task. Though you're strongly encouraged to read through our 'Handbook' section and also the 'Walkthrough' portion, sometimes all you want is a quick answer to a common question. Monster Hunter Tri poses many, many questions, but we'll http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_5.html (1 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:50:52 PM] ● Popular ● | ● Latest Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN touch on the most common ones here. If you need additional information, check out the afore-mentioned sections for the full scoop. Is your question not answered? » How do I make more missions available? There are a number of points in the game where it can seem like there's no way to progress beyond your current point. However, the answer is almost always found by simply talking to a few of the usual suspects: Junior, the Guild Sweetheart, the Chief and Cha-Cha. Usually, they'll have text bubbles overhead if they have something important to say. Make sure that you read carefully when you see that indicator. You'll usually receive a hint about how you should proceed. If you're given details on how to turn resources into a camp, make sure that you do so to access new quests. The same is true if you have the option of assembling the Ancient Mask. If you've talked to everyone in the village and you've taken care of any available tasks but still have no new options, then it's possible that you just haven't cleared a critical quest yet. Critical quests most often require you to hunt or capture a monster. Not all of them are required, but most are. Clear any remaining quests that are already available and you should unlock new ones. » How can I capture monsters? Capturing monsters can be easier than just defeating them outright, but at first that's not necessarily obvious. When you are going up against a powerful monster, inflict damage until it is visibly weakened. It will usually start limping and bellowing. Now you need to proceed cautiously. Allow it to lead you to its lair and allow it to move ahead of you so that by the time you arrive where it is waiting at its lair, the beast has fallen asleep and is resting. Move in, place a trap (the Shock Trap works especially well), then throw a Tranq Bomb. That should hit your target and awaken it. Now quickly run to the other side of the trap that you placed and lure the monster over to it. As it starts across, it will become caught in the trap. Then you can throw another Tranq Bomb or two. The monster should be captured at that point and you will receive your reward. » Is it better to kill monsters or capture them? The answer to that question depends on your purpose. If you're looking for monster pieces to assemble some useful armor or weapons, then you should generally capture a monster within a quest (meaning that you don't want to do it in 'Free Hunt' mode). Monsters tend to net you more resources when they're captured. If you're looking for resources that you can trade with the Argosy captain, however, then you should hunt monsters in the 'Free Hunt' mode and you should make sure to kill them. When they fall in battle, you'll be able to carve them for a few goodies, plus you can report your hunt to Junior back at Moga Village for rewards. A final note: when a quest calls for you to kill a monster, you can bring along a trap and capture it instead. You'll still complete the quest and you'll still receive significant rewards. If a quest calls for you to capture a monster and you kill it instead, however, you'll fail the quest. » I've upgraded my armor and talisman, why no elemental defense upgrade? Remember that any effects you want to see will take place only when certain conditions are met. If you start with an ice resistance of 0 and you add 9 points, for instance, you won't see any difference whatsoever. You have to meet certain thresholds to see benefits. As an example, you can add 15 Vitality points to add 50HP to your life meter as long as the appropriate gear is equipped. That's quite the boost, but a few points less will only boost it by 20HP and a point or two below that won't boost it at all. This upgrade system prevents players from making their characters too powerful, since it's difficult to http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_5.html (2 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:50:52 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN manage more than 2 or 3 effects with any equipment set. If you're wondering what the threshold is for a desired character boost, by the way, you can press and hold the 'B' button while looking at status and equipment screens to see '?' symbols appear. Hover over the mark that appears next to a stat that interests you and you'll see a list of the available upgrades (and downgrades, which are something else to keep in mind as you tinker with your gear). » What's a quick way to earn some money? If you're having money trouble, your answer is the Farm. You can head there to plant things, to increase your supply of insects and to produce exports that other lands will pay good money to import from Moga Village. The easiest way to make money around the halfway point in the game (which is when you are most likely to need it) is to obtain some Funky Pheromones by defeating a lot of insect-type critters in 'Free Hunt' mode. The Altaroth and Bnahabra enemies should be your focus. Report back to Junior after finishing up a hunt and you'll quite possibly receive the desired item. Now take your nets to a region such as the Sandy Plains, the Tundra or the Volcano. Use them to capture a Godbug or two. Finally, take that insect and the Funky Pheromones to your farm, which you've hopefully been upgrading at every opportunity. Have one or more cats take the Godbug and Funky Pheromones and plant the bug for the longest cycle you can afford. Check in periodically to find that your supply has multiplied and can be sold in large quantities for serious cash! » Where did Cha-Cha go? I completed a quest and he disappeared! Cha-Cha is an extremely useful ally, but late in the game you'll need to complete a few quests without him. He'll eventually return, full of vigor and happy to be alive. From then on out, he'll fight by your side (and will play an important role in the final encounter). Just be patient and do your best to fight the tough beasts without the welcome support that Cha-Cha usually provides. » Where do I find the Jumbo Pearl? The Jumbo Pearl is located in the Deserted Island area (also known as Moga Woods if you are in 'Free Hunt' mode). You can swim to the bottom of the ocean area and check bone piles to find the pearl, though it seems to appear roughly one in fifty times. You may have to make several trips. » Where do I find the Pelagicite Ore? The Pelagicite Ore is obtained by mining in areas 5 and 6 of the Flooded Forest. There are crimson crystals that form along the walls there. You can pick at them to find the ore, but it appears rather infrequently. You may get two or three on one trip to the region and none on your next. » How do I get the Sharqskin? The Sharqskin is gathered from sharqs that you kill, but you have to be careful not to kill them the wrong way. Fight one and deal a few blows with a standard weapon so that the animal is weakened and about to die. Then take out a harpoon to finish the job. Investigate the corpse to obtain the Sharqskin. » Where can I find the Firedouse Berry? Kelbi animals carry the Firedouse Berry around with them for reasons unknown. You won't find it by killing them in the usual manner, however. Instead, you need to stun them so that they fall on the ground in a daze. Hitting them with a weak blow from your shield (while equipped with a sword) seems to work most dependably. When the kelbi falls to the ground, quickly investigate its dazed body and you'll http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_5.html (3 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:50:52 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN sometimes obtain the desired berry. » How do I get the Super-sized Dung? You can obtain the Super-sized Dung by defeating an aptonoth in the Moga Woods. Check the forecast before you leave Moga Village. If you see that herbivores are breathing, it's a good time to make a run to the area. Battle aptonoths and watch for a particularly large and aggressive one. When you defeat it and check its body, you may score the dung, which is useful for a Farm upgrade that you'll want to make. » What am I supposed to do when fighting Ceadeus? My quest ended in failure. You have to hit Ceadeus for pretty significant damage as you swim along an underwater passage with him. He doesn't do much to attack, so stay below his beard and keep hacking at him with your weapon of choice. If you inflict enough damage, he'll thrash about wildly in the water ahead of the blocked passage leading from Area 2 to Area 3, then break it down. Then you can follow him to that area for the second portion of the fight. If you didn't do enough damage in time, you'll simply fail the quest and will need to try again. Once you clear the first portion of the battle, though, you can skip directly to the second one on subsequent attempts (just jump down from the ledge behind and to the left of the tent in base camp). He explains that a Lagiacrus is terrorizing the village. You'll receive 1500z and instructions to find the chief's son, Junior. From where you first meet with the chief, head toward the lower right and up some planking to meet with the Carefree Lad and receive a Whetstone item. Talk to him again and he'll reveal that the chief's son went east, into the woods. You should follow, but only after you've purchased protective gear from the nearby armory. You can't afford a lot just yet, but some good armor and a decent weapon are a good idea. You can come back for more equipment shortly. (Above Left) Buy some equipment before you leave Moga Village. (Above Right) Battle the Aptonoth monsters to pick up some Raw Meat for Junior, whom you'll meet soon after. Once you're properly equipped, head outside the village along the path leading east to the Moga Woods. When you first arrive in the new location, your goal is to find the chief's son, Junior. An icon of the chief will appear on-screen to remind you of the fact and will direct you to the camp, located on the east side of the area. You can track your movement (indicated by the red arrow) to reach the hut on the map, which represents the base camp. Head there now while the chief briefs you on play control. As you proceed, you'll come across a field of Aptonoth monsters. They're herbivores. You'll fight them to learn about gathering materials. Specifically, you need to collect some Raw Meat from the first of the Aptonoth critters that you slay. You can and should carve multiple times. Then continue east along the map to find Junior. Talk to him twice, once for information and a second time to hand over a Raw Meat. You'll be instructed to return to the village now, which you should do. Once you arrive back in the village, meet with Junior just left from the entrance. He'll give you the BBQ Spit and your first proper quest. He also tells you to meet with his father, which you should do for the 1000z. Now it's time to purchase any gear that pleases you, then you're free to tend to that first quest that Junior gave you! Fix Up the Camp! Client Junior Main Quest Res (30p) In Moga Woods, head to Area 6 to find and defeat some carnivores. Take the items that you carve from them http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_12.html (2 of 3) [2/1/2011 7:51:27 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN back with you when you return to Moga Village. You should have 30p or more worth of resources, enough to receive your reward. As you tend to that first quest, which involves walking around the Moga Woods area in search of resources, you'll be walked through some general game options. You can barbecue meat on the spit that Junior gave you to increase your stamina bar, for instance. You'll also notice that the map of the area has expanded. You need to head to Area 6 to find some carnivores to defeat, but along the way make sure to find some healing items. If you start by heading toward Area 7 on the map, which is off toward the left, you can find the Blue Mushroom and some Honey by heading to the right along a stream bed. Then backtrack left and continue toward Area 7 on the map. Talk to the Guild Sweetheart and she will present you with a potential first quest. As she notes, you won't be able to save your progress while you are attempting the quest unless you abandon it by talking to her again, so make double sure that you've done so ahead of time and then make a solid effort to complete it in one attempt. Harvest 'Shroom Client Clan Matriarch Main Quest Deliver 5 Unique Mushrooms (500z) Subquest A Deliver 2 Ripened Mushroom (500z) Subquest B Deliver 1 Choice Mushroom (500z) Deliver Unique Mushrooms, Ripened Mushrooms and Choice Mushrooms to the Red Box on the Deserted Island. You can find the mushrooms throughout the Deserted Island area where the quest takes place. Make sure to dig up every last mushroom at each harvest point. After accepting your first quest from the guild, you'll find that you have been given 50 minutes with which to complete it. Start by heading just left from the Guild, along the dock. There's an opening in the back fence that you can use to get in a small boat. It will take you to your destination, Deserted Island. This area is the same as Moga Woods, except that you can't exit to the village. As you arrive on the island, you'll hear from the Guild Sweetheart. She explains the purpose of three items on the island where you find yourself. You need to touch each attraction to hear the explanation. The Red Box, just to your left, is reserved for deliveries after you have found the items that are needed for a given quest. The Blue Box contains supplies that have been provided by the Guild to help you complete your quest. Finally, the bed is located in the tent to the left. You can use it to restore your status and health if you're poisoned or otherwise weakened by combat, though stamina is not restored. (Above Left) Dig multiple times at any mushroom harvesting spot that you find to make sure that you don't miss anything good. (Above Right) When you've gathered all of the desired 'shrooms, bring them back to the Red Box to complete your mission. http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_15.html (2 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:51:44 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN Now that you know where everything is, it's time to get to work on that first proper quest. Grab any goodies that you need from the supplied chests, including the area Map so that you can easily make your way to prime locations. Even when you have areas memorized, it's not a bad idea to bring along that map to make things easier for yourself. Head down the main trail to arrive at a clearing. From there, you can explore the region. You'll find Unique Mushroom items by digging at the mushrooms scattered around the map. There are plenty of them all over the place if you look hard enough, so you shouldn't find any trouble quickly finding them. Otherwise, the main area of interest is a deep pool of water along the far northeast portion of the map. There you can find precious Red Coral Stone and other objects underwater (they'll automatically be turned in for precious funds once you complete the quest), or swim through a tunnel to find easy access to a bunch of rare metals. Explore those places thoroughly if you have the time, and search for mushrooms in each of the main areas. You should be able to find the Choice Mushroom item that you need easily enough if you hit up all of the various mushrooms in the zone and harvest at each spot until there's nothing left. Just make sure that you leave yourself time to return to the Red Box and claim your prize. Once you return to Moga Village after successfully completing that first quest, a bunch of new ones will become available. The game has now fallen into its regular flow! Note that while you're back in town, you should talk to the Future Alpha Male to receive two Firefly items. Talk to the Carefree Lad, as well, who stands near the gate leading to Moga Woods. He will give you the Snakebee Larva. You can combine that with the other item and if all goes well, you will receive the Goldenfish Bait. Now you're ready to get back to some quests! Completing these should be easy, and you can use any knowledge that you may have gleaned from exploring the Deserted Island area while completing the first quest in that region. Prescription Pick-up Client Medicine Man Main Quest Deliver 2 Kelbi Horns (600z) Subquest A Slay 5 Kelbi (500z) You can satisfy this mission by simply killing a bunch of Kelbi creatures. They hang around on the west side of the map in Area 3 and Area 7. You'll most likely have to kill far more than 5 of them as you work to obtain the Kelbi Horn items that you need for your main quest, which means that satisfying the terms of the subquest should be a piece of cake. Several new quests have also become available. Bug Hunt Client Brainy Biologist Main Quest Slay 12 Altaroth (600z) Subquest A Deliver 2 Ripened Mushroom (550z) Subquest B Deliver 1 Choice Mushroom (550z) You'll head to the Deserted Island for this quest, in search of some insects that you can slay. There are some located directly ahead of where you first appear in Area 2, near a rotting log along the ground. Next make your way to Area 3 and you should find a log along the left side from which the insects march. You can find several of them at that location, along with some felynes in the area that will likely make your life difficult as they try to pick your pockets. Eliminate them and take care of the insects, then backtrack to Area 2 and from there proceed to Area 7 to find several more insects that you can defeat to receive your reward automatically. If you are worried about the side quests, just make sure to thoroughly examine every mushroom throughout the map to obtain the ones you need for your bonus zenny. Secret of the Crystal Bones Client Archaeologist Main Quest Deliver 4 Crystal Bones (600z) Subquest A Slay 4 Giggi (200z) This will likely be the quest that marks your arrival at the Sandy Plains area, but there's no need to change up your routine just because of the new locale. Talk to the Veggie Elder to receive the Goldenfish Bait, then check your supply chest for a Map, some Old Pickaxe and Torch items and other supplies. Your starting point is along the northeast portion of the region. If you want to complete the subquest, head to Area 7 and you'll find plenty of Giggi creatures that leap around near the large trees there, alongside the Kelby animals. To find the Crystal Bone items for the main quest, you need to use the pickaxe in some of the caves in the region. Area 6 works well for that. Check along the right side of the trail, just past the pile of supplies that should be visible along the cave's left side as you enter from Area 7. You should equip the Torch as you dig to keep nasties away so that you're not constantly being distracted. Don't go too far in or felynes will make your dig miserable. The good news is that you'll find the Crystal Bone item almost every time you attempt a dig. No Guts, No Glory Client Caravan Leader Main Quest Deliver 3 Monster Guts (800z) Subquest A Slay 8 Delex (800z) This is a relatively easy mission. Make sure that you grab both the Map and the appropriate drink to keep your temperature even (the desert environment is cool in the evening and roasting hot by daylight). Head to Area 9 http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_18.html (2 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:52:08 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN and Area 10. There, you'll battle the Delex enemies. They look like swordfish and they move around along the surface of the sand. You'll have the easiest time hitting them when they draw back in advance of a charge or to breathe projectile attacks. Wait for that, then move in for the kill before they attack. You'll get Monster Guts items only occasionally, but you should have enough to complete your quest by the time you clear both areas of monsters (and should also receive credit for the subquest in the process). Big Game Hunting Client Head Village Guard Main Quest Hunt a Great Jaggi (1000z) Subquest A Wound Great Jaggi's head (300z) Subquest B Stun Great Jaggi (300z) Your target in this quest is a Great Jaggi. The Great Jaggi is a powerful creature who will run away when injured, so make sure that you do as the Guild Sweetheart advises and grab the paintball item from the supply chest. You can use it to ensure that you can track the Great Jaggi if it does decide to run. As for the little matter of finding the beast, it will make its first appearance in Area 6. When you attack, you'll find yourself facing the beast itself and numerous helpers. You should focus on the main target and hit it hard with your most powerful shells, but don't dare stand around in one place. You need to be ready to keep moving so that you're not cornered and hammered by the Great Jaggi's powerful tail. It can take a lot of damage, so make sure that you are properly prepared. Otherwise, hit it with everything you've got and you should take it out before it does the same to you! Of the new missions that you've received, the most important one is the 'Big Game Hunting' one. However, there's a good chance that you're not ready for it just yet. First, you should probably complete the other ones for items that you can potentially use to improve your gear. There's a new location available for some of those new quests: the Flooded Forest. Before you worry about the new quests, talk to the villagers. You'll learn that you can now take Cha-Cha, the Shakalaka that you saved, with you on quests. He has powerful dances that can affect the flow of battle and tilt it in your favor. If you talk to the Artisan, you will find that he has a host of new gear available. It's worth looking into that stuff for the tougher battles to come. As usual, you should also check your other irons in the fire. Talk to the lady at the Market, as well. She now offers the Organizer Guide for 3000z, which you can use to get more room from your Item Box (increasing the capacity by an additional 50% from 4 pages to 6). It's a potentially worthwhile purchase, even at that price. For gunners, there's also new ammo available. With all of that tended to, it's time to look into the new quests. Rhenoplos Rampage! Client Bandaged Boy Main Quest Slay 6 Rhenoplos (900z) Subquest A Deliver 4 Crystal Bones (800z) This should be a simple quest for you. Simply find and kill the Rhenoplos monsters in areas 1, 3 and 5. There should be 6 of them spread throughout those areas. Mission complete! You can stop by the cave first if you want to find some Crystal Bones for delivery on your subquest. Herbivore Egg Hunt! Client Newlywed Wife Main Quest Deliver 2 Herbivore Eggs (1000z) Subquest A Deliver 1 Herbivore Egg (1000z) Subquest B Slay 5 Jaggia (900z) This quest's directions tell you to search under the tree in the oasis (located in Sandy Plains) for herbivore eggs. You need to deliver two in order to complete the quest. When you arrive in the plains, grab the desired items from the supply box (including some drinks to withstand the harsh desert temperatures) and then make your way to Area 7. There are obstructions placed around the map, so you'll have to reach your destination by charting a course through areas 1, 4, 8 and 10. Kill any monsters that you encounter along the way in those regions, being as thorough as possible since any enemies that remain will be a pain in the butt momentarily. When you reach Area 7, there will be some Rhenoplos enemies gathered around a tree. Kill them, then a fourth one that will appear shortly thereafter. Then head over to the tree and dig out a Herbivore Egg. http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_21.html (2 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:52:22 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN (Above Left) Dig around at the base of the tree in Area 7 after you kill the Rhenoplos monsters that are guarding it. (Above Right) Take the Herbivore Egg that you obtain with you as you return to camp. Now that you have the egg, you need to get it back to the red chest in your camp. If you are hit by an enemy along the way or you try to roll, the egg will crack. The trick is to backtrack along the path that you cleared on the way to the egg. Start by heading back to Area 10. From there, backtrack to areas 8, 4 and 1, trying to stay to the sides to avoid attracting the attention of any enemies who may have returned. If you did your job properly on the way to the egg, there shouldn't be any enemies, but it's best to play it safe. The worst part of the journey back is Area 4, but you should be okay if you stay along the side. When you deliver the first egg, you'll satisfy the first subquest and more items will appear in your supply chest. Now it's time to repeat the process with a second egg to satisfy the main quest, except this time there are some new barriers. You'll need to travel through areas 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 10 and finally arrive at 7. Be sure to kill every last insect enemy in each of the locations along the way (they appear in 4 and 8). Stick around where the insects appear to make sure that no more will spawn. There are around 12 in each spot. Don't worry about killing the felynes in Area 2 and Area 3, since they'll continue coming no matter how many you slay. Note that you can't ever kill all of the Rhenoplos enemies in Area 4, either, so don't even waste your time trying once you have narrowed the number of them that appear at one time down to one. Your main enemy on this mission is time, so make sure to deliver the first egg quickly so that you have time to make proper preparations for delivery of the more challenging second one. The Guild Sweetheart also mentions the Paw Pass Ticket. This useful item is awarded to you after you accept a quest and make an effort on it for awhile, allowing you to return to town early if needed. Talk to the other villagers (including the weapon shop owner, who has new weapons available that might interest you), then see about those new quests and a new environment: the icy Tundra. Lost in Blue Client Tundra-expedition Member Main Quest Slay 20 Baggi (900z) Areas 4, 6 and 7 should be your focus for this quest, which takes place in the Tundra. You need to hunt down Baggi monsters, to the tune of 20. As you head around the map, you'll also run into a larger beast (a Gigginox) that likes to attack with poison and fearsome howls that stop you in your tracks. When you see that fellow enter, just run to a different area and continue your hunt for the Baggi monsters. They look like Jaggi, as you might anticipate, but they can withstand more damage. Your Spiral Lance should work perfectly against them, if you're still carrying it around. This is one of the easiest missions you've had in a long time, so enjoy it and make sure that you sip a Hot Drink found in the supply chest so that the cold environment doesn't wreak havoc on your life meter. Leader of the Icepack Client Tundra-expedition Leader Main Quest Hunt a Great Baggi (1400z) Subquest A Wound Great Baggi's head (400z) Subquest B Stun Great Baggi (400z) Travel to Area 3 and you'll meet your foe for this challenge, the Great Baggi. He behaves much like the Great Jaggi enemy that you should be familiar with by now, except his attacks seem to come with more frequency and he's capable of breathing an icy blast that can catch you by surprise if you're not paying attention. Fight him and try to steer clear of the Great Gigginox that also is in the area (looks like a large slug with wings and can stun and poison you from afar). Battle wisely and the Great Baggi will go down easily. Cold Stones Client Female Geologist Main Quest Deliver 8 Bloodstones (900z) Subquest A Deliver 3 Popo Tongues (600z) Subquest B Light up cave in Area 5 (300z) Head to Area 5 and you should find plenty of the crimson-hued rocks along the side of the passages. You can pick at these with the Old Pickax items found in the supply box and they often yield the Bloodstone item that you need. Other cave areas in the region will help you pick up the last few that you need if you don't find them http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_26.html (2 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:52:36 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN all in Area 5. Lighting up the cave while you're exploring Area 5 will make it easier to spot the stones. Just get close to a given lantern stand and use your Torch item to light one. Then put it away and move to the next stand to repeat the process. Remember that lighting up the cave can attract unwelcome attention from the Gigginox, so be ready to flee if he comes into view. You can deal with him later on a separate quest. Hunter Killer Client Wounded Hunter Main Quest Hunt a Barroth and a Great Jaggi (3800z) This quest finds you hunting a Barroth and a Great Jaggi at the same time. Taking out the Great Jaggi by himself should be easy and something that you can accomplish within the first few minutes because he's weaker than normal. That will leave you free to focus on the Barroth, who also is weaker but still a very real threat. Besides the two named beasts, you'll possibly have to worry about a Qurupeco that sometimes shows up. You should mostly be able to avoid him if you're quick about taking care of the Great Jaggi, since the Qurupeco doesn't tend to like the same areas of the region that the Barroth does. Don't lose your cool and this quest should go just fine for you. Harvest Tour: Sandy Plains Client Felyne Tour Guide Main Quest Deliver a Paw Pass Ticket (15z) This quest is easy. Just accept it and you'll be taken to Sandy Plains. Now run around doing whatever you like for several minutes. You'll receive a notice that supplies have been delivered once you've been in the area for several minutes. Check your supply chest to find the Paw Pass Ticket, which you can then deliver to the red chest to complete the mission. Harvest Tour: Flooded Forest Client Felyne Tour Guide Main Quest Deliver a Paw Pass Ticket (15z) As with the previous tour, simply spend some time in the appropriate region (for this quest, the Flooded Forest) and then check your supply box for a Paw Pass Ticket once you get a notice that there has been a supply drop. Deliver that as dictated by the quest and you're done! The first of the missions likely to give you any sort of trouble is the 'Leader of the Ice Pack' one, which finds you going up against a Great Baggi. http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_26.html (3 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:52:36 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN (Above Left) The Great Baggi is no less handsome than the Great Jaggi, and more dangerous. Read More » How can I capture monsters? Your Supply Box will contain Worms, so grab those and head to Area 10. Once you arrive, you'll receive further instructions. Follow those by heading along the right edge of the map, on the beach. Near the very far right side, you can stand so that you're almost in the water. Equip the Worm item and watch for the icon to appear overhead indicating that you can fish. Toss in your bait, then wait for a fish to latch onto it. Quickly pull the worm out of the water, along with the fish. You can catch Sushifish, Pin Tuna, Whetfish, Goldenfish and Small Goldenfish in this area. You'll probably run out of worms before you've satisfied your quests, so make sure to dig for more worms under the long log that you may have noticed off to the right when first entering Area 10. Farm Aid Client Old Farmer Main Quest Slay 5 Jaggia (800z) Subquest A Slay 10 Jaggi (600z) Once you arrive in the Deserted Island area, start through it. You'll enter Area 2 first, where you should find two of the Jaggi monsters. Head right from there to Area 5 to find another Jaggia and three more of the Jaggi monsters, then from there travel uphill to Area 6 and you'll find three more of the Jaggia monsters and several more Jaggi. There are enough of the latter to allow you to complete Subquest A, in fact. Be careful of this group of monsters if they rush you, since they can do some real damage to your life meter if it's dwindling. You can head back to your camp and rest on the bed to refill your energy if needed. Then get back to the task and travel next to Area 7, where you'll find the last of the Jaggia monsters that you need to defeat, along with surplus Jaggi critters. When you defeat the last of the enemies that you were required to defeat, the quest will complete automatically. Guts: It's What's for Dinner Client Manor Cook Main Quest Deliver 3 Monster Guts (800z) Your job in this mission is to kill some Epioth enemies until you collect their guts three times. The Epioth monsters hang out in the deep pools at the top portion of Area 10 and Area 11, so you'll need to swim underwater and hit them with your weapon. If you have the bowgun, this quest will go much more smoothly. You can equip Normal S Lv2 that you find in the supply box, then use those shots to take out each of the beasts. There's one beast in Area 10 that could very well yield you two of the items you need. Then you can swim west from there to Area 11. As you arrive, you'll be treated to a cinema of a larger monster arriving. That's the Lagiacrus that has been terrorizing the village. You can't really do much about it right now, so return to Area 10 as soon as you can. You'll find more Epioth monsters there now. Take care of them in the usual manner. Once you have obtained three Monster Guts items, send them off to complete the quest and receive your reward. You already have one more quest available to you, but you should go ahead and talk to the chief and to the Fleet Captain, as well. Talk to Junior and he'll mention that the Head Farmer wants to add a Shroom Box to the farm. You can check the Villager Requests option from Junior's menu to find that a box can be built in exchange for 80 Res, which you should easily have by now. Go ahead and build it. Another immediate attraction in the village is the Fishmongress, who will explain how the Fishing Fleet functions and will hand over the Power Paddle item. You can now send boats out to catch fish that can be turned in for resources. Make sure that you do so frequently, starting right now. Then come back soon to see what fish were caught. Before you get back to your quests, you should also stop by the farm to look in on your Shroom Box. Speak to the Head Farmer and he'll give you a Bomb Casing. Killing the Sharq monsters that frequent that space is easy enough if you equip powerful bullets on a gun and track one Sharq at a time. You'll receive credit once you kill your third one. Finding the Red Coral Stones can take more effort. You need to look for silvery spots along the floor, which are piles of bone. Dig there to find the stones. There are around four piles along the ocean floor in that area and you'll have to check multiple ones to find the eight that your quest requires. The 'Sunken Treasures' quest has been available for awhile now, but there's also a new quest that the game labels as more urgent. It's only available to you just now. Tackle them in whatever order you like. No Love for Ludroth Client Ex-Caravan Sentry Main Quest Slay 6 Ludroth (700z) For this quest, you'll need to defeat Ludroth enemies. They lurk underwater, as the Guild Sweetheart will tell you once you arrive on the Deserted Island map, so you can expect to find them in Area 10. When you arrive, a cutscene follows and three attack. Defeat them however you like. Your bowgun and ammo will go a long way toward making this battle easy, if you have that weapon. Once the land-based Ludroth have been defeated, continue forward and head underwater. There should be another of the creatures swimming around in the water there. Defeat him, then head to Area 11 where several more await you. Defeat two of them and you'll be advised that you have completed the mission. Now you'll be returned to Moga Village. The urgent quest that's waiting for you is important because it opens up your path toward additional quests of a more challenging variety. You actually shouldn't have much trouble with it, since you only need to defeat six monsters in Area 10 and Area 11 of the Deserted Island map. They'll go down pretty easily if you hit them with the supplied ammo for the quest. Three will attack you on land in Area 10 and the rest are found underwater in that area and in Area 11. Speak with Junior to find that the Head Farmer would like to build an Insect Box. You can have him do so if you turn over some Monster Fluid and 150 Res. Visit the market and you'll find that Book of Combos 3 is now available, along with other inventory. After tending to the small stuff, talk to the Argosy Captain, who is standing near the chief. He will give you nine Curved Fang items. You can use these to master the 'Trade' function. Each item you offer fills part of your meter with green. Then you can select items that you would like from your trading partner and he'll work with you as long as the stuff that you have meets or exceeds the value of the stuff you want from him. Make any trades that suit you, then talk to the village chief and finally the Itinerant Cook who is next to the Argosy Captain. He's a felyne who can cook important recipes for you. After talking to him, talk against to the Argosy Captain to receive a Voucher that you can use to get food from the felyne at his canteena later. Client Brainy Biologist Main Quest Capture a Great Jaggi (2000z) Subquest A Slay 3 Jaggia (550z) Subquest B Slay 10 Jaggi (650z) Capture a Great Jaggi, rather than killing it. The trick is to wear it down until it frequently runs away a short time after you follow it into a new location. That means that it is about to die. Instead of dealing a killing blow, lay down a Shock Trap. Lure it into the trap, then quickly hit it with Tranq Bombs or with Tranq Shot bullets if you are using your bowgun. A few direct hits to the properly weakened Great Jagi will do the job. If you hadn't weakened him enough first, he'll escape and you'll have to try again after getting more trap items by defeating the subquest challenges. Note that when capturing monsters, the easiest way to guarantee yourself victory (if http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_19.html (2 of 3) [2/1/2011 7:53:35 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN you have enough time remaining) is to let them retreat to their nest and fall asleep. Then you can get close and lay down a trap while they sleep. Wake them up by tossing a Tranq weapon their way, then lure them across the trap and toss a few more to finish the job. Before you start in on the new quest, talk to the village chief and then Junior a few times. The Head Farmer is wanting some more support. If you turn in 300 Res, two Dung and one Super-sized Dung, you can satisfy his requirements. You're not likely ready to do that just yet, but keep it in mind. Note that the Jagged Fire bowgun is also available to be crafted by the smithy, if desired, as well as the Commander's Dagger and the Rugged Great Sword. All three require rare items to construct them. For now you should return to your regularly scheduled questing. Your newest job is to capture a live Great Jaggi. You'll fail the mission if you accidentally kill your target. So, how do you capture one of the beasts? You weaken it, then you lure it into a Shock Trap when the time is right. Attack the Great Jaggi until he stumbles and falls to the ground. When he gets back up, continue to attack him as he slowly moves around the map. Remember to mark him with the Paint Ball item as necessary. After capturing the Great Jaggi as required, you'll return to the village to find that the villagers have more to say. Mostly, their words just amount to well-deserved praise and the revelation that there's a new creature in the nearby woods, a Shakalaka. Start by noting the location of Shakalaka (indicated as a light green box icon) on the map. Then head to that location quickly. You should have plenty of time to reach the spot if you hustle. When you arrive, you will be greeted by a scene depicting the little fellow waking up some monsters. There are two of them in Area 4, buzzing near the trees on the bank overlooking the deep pool of water. You can blast two more in Area 7, also near the trees. Area 9 is good for three more. One is visible right as you enter, then you can head across some fern-covered ground to find another one. From there, duck low and pass through an opening on the northeast part of the map, still in Area 9, to find a hidden recess where the third one is flying around near the ground. From there, climb up over the slight embankment to reach Area 10, where you can finish catching insects. They'll keep coming, so you can finish the job even if you missed some along the way. The Deadliest Catch Client Flooded Forest Guardsman Main Quest Slay 7 Ludroth (800z) Subquest A Slay 3 Catfish (600z) You only need to worry about killing Ludroth monsters to complete this quest. You'll find one ahead of you as you enter Area 1. Proceed onward from there to Area 4, where you'll see two more as you enter. Then dive into the water here to find a Catfish lair. You can likely kill three of these pretty easy with bowgun fire if that's your weapon of choice, or with careful slashes from a melee weapon. Then proceed to Area 6. You can jump from the ledge where you find yourself to dive into a pool of water. There, you'll find three more Ludroth creatures waiting. Kill them, then swim into Area 8 and be ready for a battle. There will be a bunch of Ludroth monsters here. If you've been doing well, you need to kill only one more to satisfy the terms of your quest. Playing with Fire Client Red-cheeked Huntress Main Quest Hunt a Qurupeco (1800z) Subquest A Pitfall Trap Qurupeco (200z) Subquest B Deliver 1 Wyvern Tear (800z) Your goal for this mission is to hunt a Qurupeco. It's the creature that you may recall the village chief talking about. For your first attempt at this quest, you'll want to head to Area 8 to see a sequence depicting your target flying away from some other enemies. Avoid them and proceed in the direction that the bird flew, likely to Area 3 and from there to Area 4, where the bird is finally positioned so that you can actually interact with it. When you find the bird, start by hitting him with a Paintball so that you can track him if he flees. Inflict damage with the gun until you see the bird puffing up its chest to call for help. You can either throw a Sonic Bomb at that point to drown out its cries, or you can hit its puffed up chest with bullets to deflate the critter. If you don't drown out or prevent its cries for help, you will need to contend with another tough monster, such as a Great Jaggia or a few Rhenoplos foes. Continue fighting and following the bird as necessary until you finally defeat it. When you attempt the 'Playing with Fire' quest, you'll have your work cut out for you. You should save it for http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_22.html (2 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:54:03 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN last so that you have time to gather goodies and construct some better armor. Then when you're ready, accept the quest. (Above Left) The Qurupeco is a large bird with limited flying mobility. (Above Right) When you see it puffing up its large red chest, either hit the bulge with bullets or toss a Sonic Bomb to drown out its calls for reinforcements. Your job in the new quest is to hunt the Qurupeco. As you'll find, it's one tough bird! Unless you've really beefed up your offenses, a bowgun isn't really the right tool to use. You should bring the most powerful standard sword that you can craft and be ready to use a lot of combo moves. That will help as you search for and battle the Qurupeco. You should find your target in Area 8 the first (and if you do well, last) time that you attempt the quest. From there, you'll have to follow it around until it lands and is ready to fight. However, don't expect an easy go of it. The bird charges you (roll out of the way) and it can hit you with a flurry of pecking, powerful wing strikes or poisonous globs. Its worst attack comes when it beats the tips of its wings together several times. Following that tell, you can expect the Qurupeco to strike with a series of powerful blows. Be ready to roll out of the way of each pounce or you'll take major damage. You can roll out of the way of all attacks, for that matter, if you see them coming and react in time. Then you should move in and deal some damage before rolling out of range again for subsequent rushes. As the battle wears on, your target will occasionally pause to puff up its chest and call for help. You don't need such complications, so make sure that you're ready to chuck a Sonic Bomb (it drowns out the noise) or to fire shots at the chest if you're equipped with a bowgun. You can deflate your foe's bulge before it gets a chance to put its mimicry to use. Continue fighting, dodging and preventing reinforcements from being summoned. Keeping it from summoning friends can prove difficult, so be ready to dodge new arrivals if you're not successful in the attempt. The bird will flee regularly once you almost have it killed, so mark it with a paintball as necessary. Follow it around the area, hit it with everything you've got and you should emerge the victor. As you might anticipate, one of your new tasks is to capture a Qurupeco like the one that you just defeated. That's not good news if you had a rough time killing one, obviously, but there's no helping it. Trapping a Trickster Client Newbie Hunter Main Quest Capture a Qurupeco (3600z) Subquest A Wound Qurupeco's head (400z) Subquest B Destroy Qurupeco's flint (400z) This quest takes place in the Deserted Island area. You'll need to fight the Qurupeco monster as you did its predecessor, but when it starts limping you should trap it with gear snagged from the supply chest. For the most part the bird will stay along the right side of the map, though it may retreat to its nest in Area 8 when you've about slain it. You'll have Tranq Bomb and EZ Shock Trap items to aid with the capture effort. You might want to hold off on grabbing the items that will aid in the capture until you see the bird actually limping and about ready to be caught. You can always return to camp to grab them at that point, and it'll spare you the agony of accidentally setting out your trap item before the time is right (remember that you don't want to use it or your Tranq Bomb items until the bird is nearly defeated). You can get more items if you satisfy subquests (though the easier task of wounding the bird's head doesn't do much for you), but it's best to play it safe with risky and extended encounters such as this one. Save Our Boat Client Fleet Captain Main Quest Hunt a Royal Ludroth (2000z) Subquest A Deliver 1 Wyvern Tear (800z) Subquest B Slay 5 Ludroth (600z) For this quest, you'll head to the Flooded Forest area. The Royal Ludroth is your foe. He attacks with body rolls, pounces and icy projectiles. You should be able to easily roll out of the way of most of those attacks if you're paying attention and see them coming. Attack, dodge, attack, dodge and repeat as necessary until you wear the beast down. When it retreats to the water, your strategy shouldn't need to change much. Just keep hitting it on the face, near the shoulders and along the mane. Underwater, though, it's especially important that you dodge carefully out of the way to avoid attacks. Keep up the merciless attacks on your opponent and in time you'll win. When you're done with the Qurupeco, you might think that the game would give you a bit of a breather. Not so. Your next target is the fearsome Royal Ludroth, a much more powerful version of the weaker monsters that you've likely been killing for awhile now. Accept the 'Save Our Boat' quest and you'll appear in the Flooded Forest region. Work your way to Area 4 to find the Ludroth, who should appear at first on land. If you're a melee fighter (the switch ax type seems to work best), you need to move in close and chop him along the flank, a short distance up from the tip of his tail. That's the best place to damage him, but watch for his tail to start thrashing and his head to tilt back. That indicates that he's preparing to roll to one side or another. He may also pounce forward, which can inflict a lot of damage if you're caught by his airborne charge. Be prepared to roll out of the way if you see that coming. http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_23.html (2 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:54:17 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN (Above Left) Battling the Royal Ludroth on land is fairly easy even with a sword. Just avoid the rolls, pounces and occasional projectiles. (Above Right) Those rolls are more difficult to avoid underwater and a hit will leave you incapacitated for a longer period of time, as well. Besides using his massive girth to his benefit, the Royal Ludroth also likes to fire icy projectiles. They can inflict severe damage, so you will be doing a lot of dodging in this fight as you build up damage. Once you've hit it for enough such damage (possibly severing a tail in the process), the Royal Ludroth will flee to the water. You should follow, but make sure that you swim carefully. When you're a distance away from him, put your weapon away so that you can maneuver more quickly. Then get in close, just under his maw (even with the bottom of his mane) and start slashing with your most fearsome combo. If you can approach from the side or back at about that level, you'll find it much easier to get in a few strikes before your opponent swims a short distance away to mount a fresh attack. Quickly put away your weapon, then maneuver around to strike near the mane again. Be especially careful as you battle below the surface of the murky water, since any damage that you take tends to leave you unable to move for awhile as your body floats toward the surface. You could get hit almost as soon as you recover if things don't go well, so you want to avoid that possibility before it even comes close. Keep wailing away at the monster with your switch ax or other melee weapon. You'll eventually win the day, but the fight can be a challenging one until you memorize your foe's attack patterns and the places that he likes to go. If you're having trouble finding him and have a suspicion that the fight is almost over, know that he'll make for Area 5, then Area 6 and most likely finish up with Area 8 as you are about to truly defeat him. You can hit him with a paintball to track him, of course, but sometimes the fight can wage on for awhile and a paintball that you threw previously will lose its effects. As with any boss monster, you need to get a feel for how the Royal Ludroth moves. Once you defeat the beast, make sure that you scavenge its corpse for important items before the timer kicks you back to the village. Upon your arrival, you'll notice that the villagers are feeling chatty again. Talk to Junior to find that the Royal Ludroth has joined the list of beasts that you can now find in the local woods. That's handy for item farming. Talk to the chief for a general update, then you're ready to talk to the Guild Sweetheart. She has two new quests for you. You should take it on with the Spiral Lance, so take the time to fashion one if you don't already have one (you'll need to battle some Royal Ludroth monsters). With the Spiral Lance equipped, try to get in close to the Barroth and strike at its legs and claws. This will allow you to avoid most of its attacks, while its frequent charges can be blocked with your shield. Keep hammering away at your foe as opportunities arise and you should be able to win the fight with plenty of time to spare. A Royal Pain Client The Lord's Beloved Daughter Main Quest Capture a Royal Ludroth (4000z) Subquest A Wound Royal Ludroth's mane (400z) Subquest B Sever Royal Ludroth's tail (400z) You've managed to slay a Royal Ludroth now, so it's time to capture one alive. This time, you'll be doing so at the Deserted Island. He hangs around in areas 5, 9, 10, 11 and 12. You'll first find him in Area 5 or Area 9 and you'll spend much of the early portion of the battle there. As he grows weaker (particularly once you hack off his tail), he'll move to areas 10, 11 and 12. When you see him retreating to Area 12, it means that you almost have him. After he flees to the area, you should find him slumbering. Plant your trap, then wake him and lure him across it. Quickly move in and tranquilize him for an easy victory. The new 'Leading the Charge' quest requires you to slay a new type of beast: the Barroth. You'll be taken to the Sandy Plains area when you accept the quest. When you enter the zone, head to Area 3. The Barroth is a large beast that likes to wallow in the mud pit there. When you arrive, you may not see it out in the open. Head toward the murky pool of water and watch for the floating objects on the water. When you get near, the Barroth will break free from the mucky surface to attack. You'll find that the monster moves rather slowly, but its attacks are quite powerful when they connect. Its charges can drain your life meter quickly if you don't have your shield up, plus it will occasionally let out a howl that stuns you where you stand and opens you up to be on the receiving end of a charge you can do nothing about. You can avoid falling victim to that by staying mostly to the side of the monster when it is standing still and looking around, rather than facing it head-on. The trick to defeating Barroth is to play smartly. With your Spiral Lance and shield equipped, you're safe from most of its attacks. You mostly only need to worry about its pounces and head butts, which can break through your defenses and leave you reeling. The charge is something that your shield can block (if you're not in the middle of swinging your weapon when struck; make sure that you're not). You can also block its hammer-like tail, which always swings twice in a row once it swings at all. Finally, your adversary also likes to shake loose gunks of mud. If you get hit by those, you'll find your arms temporarily bound by your side. You'll need to roll around and shake loose from the gunk before you can attack, or let Cha-Cha or a weak enemy break you free. It's an altogether unpleasant situation, so steer clear of the gunk. http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_24.html (2 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:54:32 PM] Show: ● ● Popular ● | ● Latest Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN (Above Left) The Barroth emerges from the muck in Area 3 to ruin your day. (Above Right) Roll clear of its charges, then move in to hack it apart with your weapons (or fire from a distance with your bowgun). Speaking of Cha-Cha, he's terrific to have along for the fight because he can distract your foe and occasionally will even heal you or boost your attributes. That leaves you free to move slowly around the area until you come into position near the Barroth's legs. When that happens, you can hit him with a series of three lance jabs, or perhaps even more if your positioning is correct. Your Spiral Lance does good damage to the Barroth, plus you'll be able to hit him several times without worrying too much about taking damage yourself because none of his attacks are capable of harming you if you're pressed right up against his powerful legs. Hit him a few times in that fashion and he'll fall to the ground, leaving you to ram him with your lance several more times before he gets back up to his feet. Once you've amassed a good amount of damage, the Barroth will likely attempt to flee. It runs off a short distance, then burrows into the ground. Don't get too close when this happens, since sometimes it will immediately burst back from the ground where it just disappeared. Instead, stay a short distance away and watch for puffs of white along the ground to indicate the direction in which the Barroth has fled. You don't even need to use a paintball, though of course that item is advised if you are going to be running back to your camp often to heal. You should also see about putting your new Barroth parts to use for some weapon upgrades. You may be pleased to learn that you've now completed all of the three-star challenges at the Guild, but there's a new urgent quest that needs your attention before you can progress to the next tier. Accident Investigation Client Trader Main Quest Hunt a Gobul (3000z) Subquest A Destroy Gobul's lantern (600z) Subquest B Fish out Gobul once (800z) Gobul is a fish monster that you will initially meet in Area 6 of the Flooded Forest. His most powerful underwater attack is the one you will need to worry about. He sucks you into his maw and inflicts severe enough damage that a single encounter with it can be fatal. To avoid it, stay out of his direct line of sight and swim away if you see him preparing to suck in the water around him. Otherwise, try to swim below him and strike him on his white belly, which is the main portion of his body that your weapons can penetrate. His lantern is weak to attack, as well. Continue wailing on him and you'll eventually force him to the shore, where he can still roll around to harm you but is weak enough in general that you should be able to easily put him to permanent sleep. When you decide to hunt Gobul, you'll find yourself in the Flooded Forest. Gobul is a massive fish that looks like a cross between a lantern fish, a manta ray and a puffer fish. When you first arrive in Area 6, where he initially resides as you fight him on that first attempt, he'll break forth from the mucky surface of the submerged forest floor and will kill some of the enemies that are swimming through that environment. Your goal, naturally, is to prevent him from using his suction attack to do the same thing to you! Note that in subsequent battles, he'll first appear in Area 4. http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_25.html (2 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:54:48 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN The first thing that you'll probably find as you move in for the kill is that Gobul's defense rating is pretty strong. If you try to hit him from above, your attacks will likely bounce from his thick hide unless your weapon is particularly sharp. Instead, you want to try to come up underneath him and hit his weak, white belly. You should be able to jab it a few times with your lance in a single rush. Staying along the lowest depths of the area seems to work best. Sometimes he'll lay flat on the surface and you can hit him several times with your lance before he moves again. Then make sure to get out of the way as he puffs himself up and rolls around with spikes extended. (Above Left) Your first meeting with Gobul will be in Area 6. (Above Right) Try to swim up at Gobul from beneath and hit him with a few lance strikes, then get out of the way of his wrath! While you fight, make sure that you don't get in front of the fish at eye level. It often will use a suction move that does tremendous damage to your life meter. You can only survive it if you're in good shape, and after the assault you'll be crippled. Besides his suction attack (which should hit you only rarely) and his puffed up, spiky roll, the fish also likes to flash his lantern to blind and stun you. Just stay away when you see the flashing start and make sure that your character is looking away at the time. That'll severely diminish or nullify its effects. Occasionally, the fish will also move onto land. Here he relies mostly on his lantern attack to stun you and on his rolling spike move. Depending on your skill set, you may find him easier to battle on dry land, but you'll definitely want to focus on hacking apart that pesky lantern to satisfy a subquest. It's also a good time to chuck a paintball at him, though you can also do that underwater if desired. For the most part, finding the fish means looking for the telltale red plants on the floor of the region where he has last fled. They should have oxygen bubbles rising from them and aren't actually plants. If you get near, the fish will emerge from the murky floor, unless he is asleep. If he's sleeping to recover health, you can poke him with your lance a bit to waken him. Just make sure that you're not caught by his spikes as he surfaces. Gobul can be a tough enemy at first, but things will go considerably easier for you if you are wearing enough of the Ludroth armor pieces. If you're having trouble, just equip more of those (or the full set for bonuses, of course) and you should be able to win after a few more attempts. http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_25.html (3 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:54:48 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN (Above Left) Look away when you're battling Gobul and he is prepping his lantern flash. The problem is that as you weaken the Great Baggi and he runs to new areas, he'll likely seek out shelter for a nap. The Tundra region is occasionally inhabited by a Gigginox that hangs around on the ceiling of enclosed chambers. You do not want to battle long in its presence, since it is capable of inflicting serious damage on you and also stunning you. Steer clear of it as you battle the Great Baggi. You'll know that the Gigginox is in the area if you hear the tempo of the music change abruptly, so run before you ever have a chance to see it. You'll fight a Gigginox soon enough in a later quest. Fortunately, the Gigginox does not appear in the region every time you visit, so that complication won't always be present. Once you've defeated the Great Baggi, you'll head back to town to find the residents feeling quite chatty. Talk to the Wyverian Artisan to learn that you can now forge and upgrade Long Sword weapons. The Argosy Captain can now sail to new areas for new items, you'll also find. Finally, talk to the chief to learn about the return of the fearsome Lagiacrus beast. There's a related Urgent Quest available at the Guild now. Trial of the Sea Dragon Client Moga Village Chief Main Quest Repel a Lagiacrus (2100z) Your job in this mission is to chase away the Lagiacrus, who isn't inclined to leave just because you hack at him a bit. He moves quickly with a lot of charge and pounce attacks, not to mention sweeping tail swings. As you fight, you should get a feel for when each of these moves are coming and learn how to easily dodge them. The fight tends to go best if you stay along his flank, near the base of his tail. Hit him as hard as you can from there, dodge out of the way of his rushes (which can still hit you if you're too close to his side) and tail sweeps, and then follow him to the water as he retreats. There, stay away when he's putting up electricity shields, then move in and hit him hard as he rests after expending that energy. Keep up the attack and you'll eventually chase away your target. The new quest is your obvious priority, but you should probably wait to attempt it until you've completed all other quests available up to this point. That way, you'll likely have better gear at your disposal. Once you're ready, take on the quest. (Above Left) On land, stay near the hind legs to avoid the worst attacks, but be ready to roll away at a moment's notice. He'll note that the Lagiacrus has been seen as close as Area 5, which is precisely where you should head to initiate battle. The Lagiacrus looks a lot like a massive Ludroth, but he's a great deal more powerful. He can tighten himself into a ball, then sweep outward with his tail and neck to take away a good half of your life meter. His pounces and charges do much the same thing. Most of his attacks are frontal, you'll soon notice, so a good strategy is to move in from the flank, near the tail. Then you can avoid most frontal attacks and you can dodge out of the way if you see him tightening into a ball in anticipation of a wide swing of his tail. As the battle wages on, the Lagiacrus will eventually progress toward the water along the northern side. Then he'll dive in as you continue to wear him down and you'll have to join the beast below the surface. There, you should continue to fight in much the same manner as you already have, but there's a new wrinkle: electricity. As you damage the Lagiacrus, it will start to generate an electric barrier around its body. If you get too close to that barrier, you'll take substantial damage. Your best bet is to back away and wait for the Lagiacrus to use his powerful attack. Then move quickly in and slash at him as he recuperates. Your job here isn't to kill the beast, but merely to repel it. The hardest part of that task is staying alive long enough to deal the appropriate amount of damage, so play defensively until you have openings, and then make the most of each opportunity. Eventually, you'll send the Lagiacrus packing. (Above Left) Two boats instead of three can mean more treasure and more fish! (Above Right) There are new quests available, as well. He isn't all that tough if you stick close to his feet for most of the battle with a lancetype weapon equipped. That will allow you to avoid most of his charges. When he takes to the sky, though, you should roll clear until he has used his tail flip, since it can poison and stun you to a near-critical point. Steer clear of his tail and any flame blasts (easily avoided if you keep moving when you see him preparing one) as you hack away at his legs and stomach. You'll have to knock him over a few times and follow him to his nest in Area 8, but if you hit him with a paintball or two you shouldn't have trouble keeping tabs on him and should be able to defeat him rather easily. The Creeping Venom Client Cocky Hunter Main Quest Hunt a Gigginox (3400z) Subquest A Slay 10 Giggi (500z) Subquest B Destroy 5 Gigginox Eggs (500z) This quest is optional when it first becomes available, but you will need to defeat the Gigginox at some point because you need the Flabby Hide that is part of its body in order to progress to the game's final areas. When it comes time to fight the Gigginox, you'll find that it sticks mostly to the cave areas, though it's not unwilling to venture outside if needed. Its attacks are body slams, for the most part. It can shuffle along the ground and can bellow to freeze you in your place, but it tends to prefer to flop on you from the ceiling (you can see its circular shadow even on cave floors) or to hang from said ceilings like a decoration and thrash around violently. If you're hit by the Gigginox's body without your shield ready, you'll likely be poisoned. Try to avoid that and get in close to its flanks to hit it with your lance. You can hit it quite frequently and even hit it from beneath if it arcs overhead. Just keep battling and run back to camp when you need a boost and you should win this battle with little difficulty. Your new quests both involve hunts for creatures that you've not tried hunting before, so it's definitely time to upgrade your chosen armor to high levels if you haven't done so already. Of the two, only the 'Dragon Lady' quest is required. See our notes on the two quests above, and additional information about the latter quest immediately below. When you initiate the 'Dragon Lady' quest, you'll appear in the Deserted Island region. Head immediately to Area 3, where you'll be treated to a scene of your foe having lunch. Follow him as he flees from there to Area 7, where you should arrive in time to see him landing. The trick now is to move in close for the attack. His feet are fairly vulnerable, as was the case with the Barroth, so you should be able to get in some good hits. http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_28.html (2 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:55:18 PM] ● Popular ● | ● Latest Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN (Above Left) Stay close to her feet and be ready to move aside to avoid slashes from his barbed tail or to get into a better position to resume your attack, as appropriate. (Above Right) You'll feel the pain if you get hit by that vicious tail. Be ready to mash buttons if you fall on your back or get stunned. As you battle Rathian, you'll become familiar with his attacks. You'll also come to appreciate the value of using a lance-type weapon because that allows you to block minor physical contact without taking damage (as long as your gear is out and you're not caught mid-swing by a charge). Rathian likes to breathe balls of fire that are easily avoided just by moving to the side as you see him preparing bursts. He also will rush you but your shield should be able to block that. His more lethal attacks come in the form of swipes with his spiked tail. These can poison you, stun you and inflict serious damage, all at once. Make sure that you steer clear of them, which is most easily done by staying near his feet and attacking with a flurry of lance stabs. When he takes to the air and hovers just a bit over the ground, stay clear of him until he lands or you'll likely be hit by his spiked tail attack at that point. After the battle has waged on for awhile, you should be able to knock loose a Wyvern Tear that you can deliver to satisfy a subquest and receive more supply items. The battle should wage on fairly long in areas 7 and 8 (where he will also head when he needs to take a nap as the battle nears its conclusion, if given the chance), but the Rathian may also flap her way over to the lower areas on the map's eastern side. It's important to keep track of him so that you don't waste time tracking him down. Make sure that you put your paintballs to good use. Beyond that, there's nothing to say. Follow him around, stay close to his feet when possible, and hack him apart with your lance. Once you win the fight, return to the village to find that the villagers are feeling chatty yet again. Cha-Cha should have a new idea for a mask, as well. You can talk to the village chief and to Junior for details. Junior will mention that you can now find the Rathian in the Moga Woods area if you want to battle a bunch of them for armor and weapon components. When you accept the quest, head immediately to Area 2 and you'll find the beast waiting there. Mark it with a paintball, though know in general that it will stick to the land-based portions of this Flooded Forest region: areas 1, 2, 7, 9 and 10. You'll find herbivores in many of those places, so you should eliminate them early in the course of the mission to rob your enemy of food that it can use for health boosts. Otherwise, it's business as usual, but the cramped areas where you're fighting mean that you're much more likely to take damage, whether that be due to foliage that blocks your viewing angles or just rock faces that give you nowhere to run. Felynes sometimes get involved with explosive barrels, as if you needed anything more to worry about. Still, it's doable if you're patient and are careful not to take too many risks. As long as you manage to avoid being poisoned, you'll probably come through this battle just fine. Poached Wyvern Eggs Client Royal Cook Main Quest Deliver 2 Wyvern Eggs (2000z) Subquest A Deliver 1 Wyvern Egg (2000z) This quest is made much, much simpler if you have the 'Transporter' ability unlocked. The easiest way to do that is to purchase pieces of the Loc Lac armor from the Artesian. You can also find charms throughout the game that will increase your ability. Your goal in this mission is to deliver two wyvern eggs to the red chest at your base camp. Begin by clearing a path along areas 2, 3 and 7 on the way to Area 8. Most of the enemies that you have to face won't attack on the way to the egg. Once you have an egg, you need to backtrack to the base camp. On the way back, more enemies (including a Rathian) will attack. If you have the Transporter ability, you can jog and avoid enemies that you left alive. If you fail, go ahead and clear the enemies out of each of the areas along your route, since the more vicious enemies will now have materialized and can be defeated. The exception is the Rathian, which you should simply continue to avoid. Make two successful runs from the nest to your base and you'll do fine. Just remember that you can't dodge or use items while you are carrying the egg, which is why it's important to clear a path first. The rewards for this inconvenient quest are actually worthwhile, though (you can get a Commendation or two, for instance), so keep at it. Fell the Lagiacrus! If you do find your health dwindling, you can swim to the next area and use some restorative items before returning to the fray. When you see your foe flashing as electricity courses over him, be sure to back away until he has exhausted himself, then move in and resume the attack. Your battle will eventually go to land, where you should use the same general strategies that helped you to repel the beast earlier in the game. Keep up the attack so that you don't run out of time. This actually isn't a terribly difficult battle to win if you play it smart. This is it. Your time to go up against the Lagiacrus has finally come! This time you won't be simply repelling him, but sending him to a watery grave. When you're ready for the epic battle, accept the 'Fell the Lagiacrus!' quest at the Guild and you'll be taken once more to the Deserted Island region. This time, your battle with the Lagiacrus will for the most part occur underwater. Head to Area 10. Depending on your style of play and your proficiency with the underwater controls, the change of venue could be good news. Lagiacrus is a powerful foe underwater, but his size is a disadvantage for him because it means that you can easily strike with your lance. It's much easier to hit him in the belly now, which is where you should focus your attacks along with his shoulders. Get in close and you can sometimes hit him 5 or 6 times per charge. Most of his swimming rushes will just bounce from your shield if you're smart about things, plus even his icy blasts will miss you if you swim in a long horizontal line around his side as he is firing them. (Above Left) If you've finally become comfortable in the water, the moments where Lagiacrus takes to the shore can be the most difficult part of the fight. (Above Right) A slumbering Lagiacrus is a beautiful sight indeed! Lagiacrus does have some new rushes that are dangerous, and you still need to steer clear of him when you see electricity coursing over his body, but the underwater portion of the battle can be a breeze if you've grown used to such encounters. When it comes time to fight on land, there's not a lot that has changed. Lagiacrus will survive longer than he used to, though, so the fight could wear on for quite awhile. Watch out when you see him rolling into a spiral form, as he will follow that with a powerful rush. You need to steer clear, since you can't count on your shield to always block those attacks. Try to move around to the side so that he's rushing away from you. Then you can follow behind him and get in a hit or three as he turns to face you again. The main challenge in this fight is to rack up enough damage that your foe perishes before the quest's time limit expires. Be fierce and fight smart and you'll manage a safe victory. http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_29.html (3 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:55:32 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN Back to Top Send FeedbackGuide ContentsQuest WalkthroughContinue Quest Walkthrough » IGN.com: Editorial Staff | Review Guide | Send Us News | Sign Up for Email Updates Hot Games: Gears of War 3 | Batman: Arkham City | Dead Space 2 | Mass Effect 3 | LittleBigPlanet 2 | Top Searches International: Australia | Germany | Ireland | United Kingdom | United States By continuing past this page, and by your continued use of this site, you agree to be bound by and abide by the User Agreement. (Above Right) Next, pass through the waterfall along the farm's right side to find a hidden cave and the Ancient Mask. Talk to Junior now to learn about a mask enshrined in the old cave behind the farm. To proceed through the game, you must now build the 'Ancient Mask,' which you do by bringing together two Lagiacrus Scale items, a Sharqskin and four Pelagicite Ore. You likely already have the Lagiacrus Scale quantity that you need. To get a Sharqskin, just kill one of the animals in the northeast region of the Deserted Island (weaken it with weapons and finish it off with a harpoon to get the skin). The Pelagicite Ore can be obtained in the Flooded Forest region, underwater in Area 5 and Area 6. You can pick apart the red stones that grow on the side of those passages, though they don't always yield the desired ore so you may need to make multiple trips. Bring all of the desired materials to Junior and he'll announce that the mask is now fashioned. You can talk to Cha-Cha and he'll mention the cave. Go to the farm and head toward its right side, where a waterfall is positioned. You can pass through the waterfall to find the cave that everyone is talking about. Investigate the statue that is nestled against its back wall to receive the Ancient Mask. You'll now have more quest options. The Wrath of Rathalos Client Princess of a Ruined Land Main Quest Hunt a Rathalos (4800z) Subquest A Sever Rathalos' tail (800z) Subquest B Deliver 1 Wyvern Tear (1200z) Rathalos fights a lot like Rathian, only he has a longer life meter and he stays in the air a great deal more. He also can breathe fire at you while airborne (dodge it, rather than trying to block it and risking heavy stamina loss) and he will sometimes try to fake you out by flying in circles around a given area and then zooming in to ram against you. Be ready to block such efforts with your shield, then to counter with vicious blows to his feet and underbelly. When you've done enough damage, Rathalos will flee to Area 6. Follow and then take care of him as you see fit. Barioth is first found in Area 2 but will move from there. When he's about to perish, he'll flee to the high ground in Area 6, so be ready to follow him and try to mark him with a paintball to follow him around the area. His main attacks are various pounces and dives from the air, which you can block manually with your shield. Steer clear of those and of his icy attacks that are most easily avoided by spending as little time directly in front of him as possible. Once you wound him enough, you'll damage a wing and you can get a Pitfall Trap from the supply chest. Then when you follow him and find him asleep, you can lure him into that trap to finish him off or capture him. The Horned Dragon Client Watchtower Sentinel Main Quest Hunt a Diablos (5600z) Subquest A Break both Diablos' horns (1000z) Subquest B Sonic Bomb Diablos mid-dig (500z) To complete this quest, you must defeat a new type of enemy: Diablos. He's a huge, burrowing dragon with a powerful tail and a knack for sneak entrances. However, his greatest strength is also a weakness. When you see him burrow into the ground, wait until his tail is just about to disappear. Then throw a Sonic Bomb. The blast will cause the earth around Diablos to crumble inward and he'll be trapped for a moment as if caught by a pitfall trap. Quickly move in and deal a few blows, then back away and wait for another such opportunity. You can continue to hit him with the Sonic Bomb blasts as long as you have them, but don't try to do so when you see black smoke coming from his nostrils. That means he's enraged and that the technique won't work. Stay on your guard at such moments, as Diablos will attack with more ferocity. As usual with tough monsters, you can deal the most damage by attacking from the flanks or by getting under his powerful legs and jabbing upward with a lance. Make the most of every opportunity to deal some damage and be ready to block regularly, particularly if Diablos burrows and you can't interrupt him with a bomb blast. He'll come flying out of the ground in a moment, most of the time, and you want to have a shield pointed in the direction from which he comes or you'll suffer severe damage. Play things smart and you'll win the fight with time and continues to spare. You have some tough hunt quests available to you, so it's time to get down to business. For the first of those quests, called 'The Wrath of Rathalos,' you'll be taken to the Volcano environment. When you fight Rathalos, you'll find that he fights a great deal like Rathian did. The difference is that he seems to have a much longer life meter and he's capable of dealing significant fire damage on a much more regular basis. He also has some new moves that might give you some trouble if you allow them to catch you unawares, plus he'll stay in the air a lot more and will still try to catch you with his spiked tail (which is now wider). http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_31.html (3 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:55:47 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN (Above Left) As usual, Rhenoplos enemies like to charge you as you struggle to slay their natural enemy. (Above Right) You need to gather more items to build a new camp. Once you have successfully hunted the appropriate monsters, you'll have to do some chores before some new quests will become available. To access those quests, talk to the Guild Sweetheart, then the chief, then Junior. Junior will give you a new villager request called 'One Chance' that will allow you to build an allimportant base camp near what looks to be your final hunting target. To build it, you'll need two Rath Talons, eight Machalite Ore and two Flabby Hides. You'll also need 1500 Res. You should have most of the items in stock already and the Res shouldn't be a problem, either. The Flabby Hide you can obtain by defeating Gigginox in the Tundra environment, if you haven't gone up against him already. If you need help, see our instructions for clearing 'The Creeping Venom' and you'll find information on battling him. When you have assembled the supplies, talk to Junior again and he'll make the camp. Then you can talk to the Guild Sweetheart to see about those new quests. The Omen Client Shipmaster Main Quest Hunt a Rathalos (5200z) Subquest A Wound Rathalos' head (800z) Subquest B Sever Rathalos' tail (800z) You'll head back to the Deserted Island area for this particular quest. Your foe is another Rathalos like the one that you've already killed. You know how to fight them by now, so you should be okay even if other monsters show up to lend an unwelcome hand to the Rathalos. Besides that, you no longer have to worry about using Cool Drink items to keep your health from depleting over the course of the battle. It's still an encounter that can take a lot out of you, like every battle at this late stage of the game, but it's very doable and by now you should have the knowledge and gear to win. http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_33.html (2 of 5) [2/1/2011 7:56:02 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN The Volcano's Fury Client Scarred Hunter Main Quest Hunt an Uragaan (5600z) Subquest A Wound Uragaan's jaw (1000z) Subquest B Deliver 1 Wyvern Tear (1400z) Uragaan is a huge monster with a powerful chin that he will use to attack as you wage war against him in the Volcano environment. Make sure that you use a Cool Drink so that you don't have to worry about the heat sapping your energy, then focus on attacking the Uragaan. For the most part, you can come at it from the sides after it makes a lunge or settles down from a roll that carries it all around the area where the battle takes place. Try to move in close and hit its belly if you're using a lance or other such weapon. Just make sure to move away if you see it standing on its hind legs, or else you may find yourself caught by a blast of fire or falling asleep. Cha-Cha may wake you up if the latter effect catches you, but there's no guarantee. When in doubt, back away. Uragaan has enough life that you can't afford to be too cautious, though, so come to the fight prepared with boosts and consider trapping him instead of killing him if you're running low on time as the fight nears its conclusion. Uragaan's Trail Client Brainy Biologist Main Quest Capture an Uragaan (8600z) Subquest A Sever Uragaan's tail (1000z) Subquest B Stun Uragaan (1000z) Now that you've completed a quest wherein you were expected to hunt and kill a Uragaan, your next challenge is to capture one. Depending on how the previous battle ended, you may already have experience doing precisely that! As with the previous encounter, you'll find this one made more difficult than it had to be by the extreme heat of the volcano. Follow the same strategies that worked the last time around and you can win this encounter as well. Of the three newly-available quests, only one must be completed to reveal the last of the game's required quests. That quest is 'The Volcano's Fury' and will have you defeat a new type of enemy: the Uragaan. You've probably seen him rumbling around in the Volcano environment and you've probably avoided him. Now, however, you must defeat him. Travel to the Volcano and make your way to Area 6. Your arrival will trigger a cutscene and then you'll find yourself battling the Uragaan. http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_33.html (3 of 5) [2/1/2011 7:56:02 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN (Above Left) Uragaan has a massive chin and he'll use it as a hammer to pound you into submission. (Above Right) After he burrows into the ground, expect Uragaan to return in free-wheeling form. Hit him hard when he stops rolling. Uragaan is, as you might anticipate, a powerful monster who can give you a lot of trouble until you get the hang of battling him. He sports a Jay Leno-sized chin and he uses it to smack the ground to either side of him after lining up to face you. Make sure that you steer clear of those hammer-like blows, since they will inflict serious harm to your person. When he's not using his chin as a hammer, Uragaan has plenty of other attacks. These include the usual rushes and tail lashing that you've no doubt come to expect from such nasties, along with a less conventional wheel roll. You'll know that move is coming when you see him burrow into the ground and disappear. He returns shortly in the form of a wheel that careens wildly around the arena for awhile. When it comes to rest, that's your chance to hit Uragaan for some good damage as he recovers expended energy, but that can be a tricky thing if he happens to stop on the opposite side of the area where you're battling. Though the above move set makes Uragaan a risky foe, the worst move of all is his ability to put you to sleep. When that happens, you'll be weak to any attacks that he chooses to send your way. Steer clear of the sleepinducing strikes at all costs. They're easy enough to see coming because Uragaan will stand up on his hind legs before crashing down and then letting loose with his sleep or fire attack waves. If you see those moves coming, know that standing at his flanks isn't safe. Roll out of harm's way and then resume your assault when the coast is clear. You'll know that you're about to win when you see him limping away (not rolling) toward another screen. Follow him to his den and finish him off there with either more attacks or by capturing the fiend. Denizen of the Molten Deep Client Fire Country Chieftain Main Quest Hunt an Agnaktor (6000z) Subquest A Wound Agnaktor's chest (1000z) Subquest B Sever Agnaktor's tail (1000z) Before you worry about anything else, make sure that you have armor that can protect against fire-based attacks. Agnaktor is a fiery lizard that will attack (following a splendid entrance animation) as you enter Area 7. He fights much like a larger version of the Uroktor enemies that inhabit that same space, and they'll pitch in to help their leader. What this means is that you'll have to keep moving as weaker foes come flying out of the ground beneath you. Circular patches of heat appear before they emerge, but that's not much warning if one appears beneath you as you're in the middle of a combo attack. The weaker Uroktor enemies can really prove an inconvenience, but they're nothing compared to the Agnaktor. It does the same burrowing attacks as its fellows but breaks forth to cause a lot more damage. Besides that, it is capable of firing a stream of lava breath that you definitely want to avoid rather than try to block. Fortunately, you should be able to see it coming and it doesn't have a lot of width. When you see that attack coming, it's a good chance to get to your enemy's flank and rain down a few blows while he finishes his attack. Otherwise, the main attacks that you'll face are tail lashes and the usual pounces that large enemies seem to love so much at this point in the game. Get used to your enemy's patterns of movement and you should find good opportunities to strike from the flank near chest and head level. Just don't get too comfortable there; move in, strike and retreat, then repeat as the battle wages throughout the volcano. This can be a tough fight to win, but the good news is that it's entirely optional. Save Moga Village! Client Moga Village Chief Main Quest Repel a Ceadeus (6000z) Ceadeus is your final foe and the battle takes place in two phases. If you fail the first phase, where you need to hack at your enemy's ruffled chest and bearded neck as it swims slowly along a passage, you'll have to start fresh. If you inflict enough damage to make it to the second phase, you can continue there on subsequent attempts. Just head between the chest and the tent's left side to find a ledge that you can leap to in order to move to Area 2. Then swim into Area 3, where the fight concludes. In that area, start by swimming across the chamber and up to a ledge where an underwater ballista weapon waits. Grab some ammo nearby, then swim over to the weapon and use the ammo to shoot your foe. Aim for the horns. You can knock away the horns and as your enemy is stunned, you'll have the chance to swim upward along a wall to find a switch that you can press. You want to press it while Ceadeus is in front of the wall, which may be easiest if you lure him up that way after he recovers from your ballista shots. As he passes in front of the wall to the side of the switch where you are waiting, press the button to send out huge prongs that will inflict serious damage on your foe. Then finish him off with standard attacks or ballista shots, if necessary. You've now unlocked the final standard quest in the game. Save Moga Village and you'll get to see the closing credits, then enjoy post-game content. Before you begin the final quest, make sure that you place plenty of powerful items in your inventory. Equip your best weapons and armor, eat a meal at the Canteen to boost your stats and get ready for a grand battle. Make sure that Cha-Cha is trailing along and that he has the Ancient Mask equipped. Then accept the quest. http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_34.html (2 of 5) [2/1/2011 7:56:17 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN (Above Left) You'll have to chase Ceadeus through the channel and inflict as much damage as possible to his chin as the fight progresses. (Above Right) The cyclone of water will be most unkind to your life meter if you happen to meet up with it during the fight. You'll be taken to a new area, the Underwater Ruin. Your only goal here is to defeat Ceadeus. You'll appear in camp and can jump into the water to the right side of the tent. Once you do, you'll find yourself swimming down a long passageway. Your foe is making the same swim that you are. Your job is to hack at him as he swims, inflicting as much damage as possible as quickly as possible. The only areas where you can easily damage him for now are his chest and beard. As he swims along the passage, you should keep pace and hack away at the beard like there's no tomorrow. Ceadeus barely seems to notice you, even when you're inflicting good damage. If you stay under him most of the fight and just ahead of his front flippers, you'll barely have to worry about dodging any attacks at all. Just keep hacking and if you start to run low on air, you can either use items that you hopefully brought with you or you can swim to the bottom of the passage and pass through some air bubbles for a refill. If you find yourself doing that, make sure that you also take a moment to sharpen your weapon as necessary. You want to make sure that every blow you land is doing the most damage possible. If you do attract the attention of your target, be prepared for some pain. He has an attack where he sucks in a whirlpool. It can deal some hefty damage. He also likes to thrash around in the water and his efforts will knock you reeling. Hopefully, Cha-Cha will keep your health up so that any minor damage you sustain isn't a big deal. If you do get knocked out, you'll be taken back to camp and can jump down the cliff to the left of the tent, which will serve as a shortcut to Area 2 where you likely were by the time you were knocked unconscious. http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_34.html (3 of 5) [2/1/2011 7:56:17 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN (Above Left) Find the ballista ammunition and use it to put the weapon to good use on the dragon's horns. (Above Right) Swim up along a nearby wall with the Ceadeus following and press the Dragonator switch to skewer him. In order to actually win the fight, you need to build up a lot of damage quickly. The chase through the channel is only the first portion of the fight. Since you have a total of only 35 minutes available in which to complete the whole battle, you need to make that first portion go as quickly as possible. Once you do enough damage, Ceadeus will break into Area 3 on the map and there you'll make your final stand. If you perish, you can continue from this point without having to repeat the long swim down the passageway. As for Area 3, the whole passage is a vertical, waterlogged chamber. From where you first appear, swim across it while gaining altitude. You want to hurry and you're not particularly worried about the dragon at the moment. Swim toward a rising island with metal glinting along the side. Here, you'll find UW Ballista Ammo in the crates near a ballista weapon. Grab several shells, then head over to the ballista. While you are floating over it, you will find that you can use the ammunition that you just grabbed. Use it to aim at the head of the approaching dragon, who by now should be swimming slowly upward toward your location. You need to hit his horns a few times. When you have scored a few direct hits in that fashion, you'll be advised to use the Dragonator. Quickly swim upward along a rock wall just to the side from the ballista that you were using. The Ceadeus should follow, but he moves slower. That's what you want. Swim along the wall to the far side, where there's a circular switch among some golden-colored pillars. Press the switch as your enemy passes along the wall. Huge prongs will extend out from the wall and skewer him. That could be all that it takes to defeat your foe. If you miss, there's a long period of time that you'll have to wait for the weapon to re-prime itself. Then you can try again. Once the quest completes, you'll be taken to a game-end sequence, including credits. Then it's time to get to work on that post-game content. All of your gear will be waiting for you and you can continue to reattempt any quests except for the one that you just cleared. Have fun, monster hunter! These will become available to you over the course of the game and their value will increase, for the most part, with each new type of monster that you slay. Don't make the mistake of ignoring the very things that give you the greatest chance of escaping from battle in one piece! Argosy The Argosy is a ship that comes to port every few days. When the ship is available, prices at the Market are lower and the captain will be wandering around somewhere near the center of the area. You can trade rare commodities with him for powerful equipment that simply can't be obtained anywhere else. Starred items are accepted for rare item trades. Other trades are also possible. The captain brings many excellent components with him when returning from faraway lands. When you talk to him, you can also designate which places he should visit next and you can exclude destinations if you don't want any items from that area. Doing so will ensure that he returns from his trip more quickly. If you're in need of a rare item for a farm upgrade and you can't seem to find it anywhere, odds are good that the Argosy captain can supply you with it. Canteen Here you'll eventually find a felyne proprietor who will fix delicious dishes for you from a variety of ingredients. You can use a voucher if you want to call the shots when it comes to the actual effect that you meal will have, or you can mix and match any two components from a list. Successfully fusing ingredients one time makes the effects of that combination immediately apparent on subsequent visits to the canteen. The effects are pretty good at times, too. You can boost your health, defense, attack and a wide variety of other attributes (such as the ability to roll out of the way when an enemy has you pinned to the ground). Positive and negative effects will last either the duration of a mission, or until you pass out for the first time while attempting a mission. Farm At the farm, you'll be able to dependably reproduce certain crops that you find out in the wilds, such as the valuable paintberry or expensive insects such as the Godbug. The items that you reproduce can then be used either for your item combining efforts or as currency that you can sell to raise money for other investments. As you advance through the game, you'll be able to gather components for occasional upgrades. Junior will let you know about each such opportunity. You should try to make such upgrades as quickly as possible to improve your farm's output. It's a real time saver! Fishery Not long after you begin the game, you'll be able to start dispatching first one boat, then eventually a total of three ships. Those ships can either seek out fish or treasure. Treasure can obviously be sold for money http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_9.html (2 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:56:45 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN or occasionally used for item creation. Fish can be turned into resources that you can use to upgrade your farm or to take advantage of its services, so the two establishments are closely linked. Guild The Guild is run by the Guild Sweetheart. She'll provide you with quests over the course of the game, but there won't be any quests available when you first begin playing. You'll have to complete other tasks to make the first of the guild's quests available. From there on out, you'll need to continue completing tasks. When you accept a task at the guild, you will either need to complete it or abandon it by checking in at the Guild counter. You can still eat at the canteen before you head out on your mission. After accepting a quest, head left along the dock to find an opening leading to a small boat that you will ride to the destination appropriate for the particular mission in question. You then must clear that mission within the specified time limit. You can return early by satisfying side quests that are available for some missions, but you must complete the main mission to receive full credit and to access subsequent missions. For the most part, any mission that you have completed can be played through again if you need to fight or capture a particular monster. You'll be permitted three attempts before a mission is failed, providing you don't run out of time. Market The market is a useful place to buy the most basic components. You can buy pieces for a trap, for instance, then combine that with elements gleaned from hunts to form useful items. Pickaxes, harpoons and nets are also available, plus basic ammunition for your weapons. You'll probably find yourself making numerous stops at the market if you're putting your full inventory to use. At the market, you can also purchase upgrade items that allow your supply chest to hold more items. Outfitter When you first start playing, you can come here to equip yourself with basic weapons. The prices are a bit steep and the selection isn't that good, but you should continue to check back over the course of the game because sometimes there will be pleasant surprises. If nothing else, you can find the gear that the artisan at the Smithy can turn into something better. Sometimes, a visit to the Outfitter also saves you the trouble of hunting for rare items that you would need if you visited the Smithy first. Smithy The Wyverian Artisan could very well be your best friend in the game. If you bring him the right components and enough money, he'll produce weapons and armor that give you a fighting chance against the brutal monsters that you encounter. He can also produce decorations that you can add to your gear (for improved customization) and he can upgrade armor that you've purchased to help it meet its full http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_9.html (3 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:56:45 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN defensive potential. To upgrade armor at the Smithy, you'll need to make or find Armor Sphere items, or you'll need to get them in trade from the Argosy captain. Once you have them, bring them to the Wyverian Artisan. He can upgrade any individual piece of armor to level 6. There are three types of armor sphere: Armor Sphere Found when completing quests, or by mining in the Tundra and Volcano environments Armor Sphere+ Rewarded for intermediate quests or mined from the Tundra and Volcano environments Adv Armor Sphere Rewarded for completing some level-5 quests in the Volcano environment When you're not actually in battle with monsters, a lot of your time will be spent at the Smithy as you figure out what ingredients you need to gather to assemble that next piece of armor or devastating weapon. (Above Left) Gather Herb items from the plant before you proceed to the carnivore battle. (Above Right) The carnivores are a friendly looking bunch... with sharp teeth! As you enter Area 6, you'll be treated to a scene depicting the arrival of some small carnivore creatures known as Jaggi. Make sure that you have your restorative herbs ready in case you need them, then approach the beasts. They don't move particularly quickly, despite their size, so you should have a fairly easy time slashing them apart. They'll keep coming if you linger in the area too long, so fight only until you have the resources that you need and don't go menu diving until you're out of the area where the carnivores attack. Then backtrack to the village and meet with Junior to report on the status of your quest. To report on a quest, first select 'Hunt Report' from the menu, then look at the items that you have. You should see a 'Pt Total' column that lists the number of resources you've gathered. You can convert all of those kills into Resources and then you can either take those Resources in the form of Commodities (recommended in this instance) or you can send them somewhere useful, like your item pack. Then report back to Junior and agree to deliver the requested items. After making your delivery, your next stop should be at the Wyverian Artisan's anvil, up near the Armory. He'll give you the Moga Pickaxe so that you can mine materials for future weapon upgrades. Once you've received that item, go ahead and talk to the village chief again. He will award you 500z. Then it's time to stock up on any desired new gear and finally you can head back to Moga Woods for new items. http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_13.html (2 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:57:32 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN (Above Left) You'll find a place where you can mine for ore along the side of the wide passageway. (Above Right) Be careful of the poisonous enemies that attack you around the nearby stone column. As you enter the woods again, the chief will talk to you about Iron Ore. He advises you that it can be found in Area 4, but first you'll need (in his words) some Felyne eyes. Do as he instructs and search the area around the brazier burning just ahead of you, to the side of the trail. You'll obtain a Torch. Now you should head toward Area 4. As you do, you'll receive more tips from the chief and you'll notice that the area as a whole is more densely populated by enemies from which you can gather new materials. Continue toward Area 4. When you enter it, you'll know it. Messages will come up prompting you to use your Torch and you'll be surrounded by relative darkness. Equip the Torch as instructed and head forward through the cavern while keeping an eye on the on-screen map. You want to head for the round, circular area where there are stalagmites along the floor. Giggi enemies attack here with poison and by launching their bodies onto you like giant leaches. You can beat them away with your Torch and with your sword. Then when the path is clear, you can mine along the side of the cavern (a symbol of a pickaxe will appear on-screen) to obtain your precious Iron Ore. Once you have the ore, take it back to Moga Village. You should feel free to mine for more along the way, if you notice any large cracks in the wall. Since you dropped down to the lower level when first entering the cave from the high ground, you' can either circle back around the long way to find the path that leads back to the village or you can explore to find a moss-covered wall that you can climb back up to high ground. Fight monsters along the way if you like, but remember that doing so can weaken your blade. Of course, the items that you gain in the process can make that worthwhile, plus you can always sharpen your weapon back up using a whetstone that you've either found or purchased. That may be true, but you probably have nowhere near enough funds for such an investment if you've been spending your money all along. For now, sell any excess items that you happen to have at the market along the village's lower left side, then see about talking to the villagers. Some of them will have quests for your consideration. Start by talking to the chief. He'll give you the Fishing Harpoon and encourage you to go fishing for prey on the far side of the Moga Woods. Next talk to Junior, who will ask if you've met the Head Farmer. You can find that fellow along a trail leading down and to the right from the bridge that crosses over to the woods. Just head due right from where you meet with Junior, along some planking, and you'll come to the entrance to the Farm. At the farm, you can talk to Chicory to receive three of the Sushifish items that you can turn in to Junior in the village for easy resource generation. Talk to the Head Farmer character, as well. He will give you a Blue Mushroom item. Talk to him again and he'll explain the item cultivation process. You can have the farm grow useful items for you while you are out adventuring, essentially. It's not a bad idea to set Chicory to work on some herb or mushroom cultivation. When that's done, go ahead and return to Moga Village. (Above Left) You're about ready to leave land behind you in favor of some underwater exploration. (Above Right) Swimming deep underwater is easy if you remember that camera manipulation controls your movement when you're below the surface. From the village, you should next head for the Moga Woods. As you enter, Junior will contact you. He advises you that the whole of Moga Woods is now available to you to explore. It's now possible to hike all the way to the sea, which is where you need to head next. Your next task is to hunt a Molid at Area 11. Travel in that direction now. You can reach it easily by heading right from the entrance and traveling along the outer portion of the map in a counter-clockwise fashion. When you arrive at the deeper water, you'll start swimming and will receive a mini-tutorial about that type of movement. Essentially, it just says that you move in the water as you move on land. Swim around and when you enter the actual area where the Molid enemies are waiting, Junior will pop in with more information on how to proceed. You need to dive under the surface of the water and get close to the Molid creatures, which look a lot like enormous angelfish. As you dive, remember to go deeper almost immediately. It'll add to your mobility. Then you can worry about swimming forward toward your prey. All that you need to do is get in close and use your harpoon that the village chief provided you. A single hit is enough to down each fish. If you're having trouble swimming underwater, though you shouldn't, you can get near to jets of bubbles that rise from the ocean floor. They'll refill your oxygen and give you more time to fight. When you have defeated a Molid, you'll be invited to return to the village, something that you can now do by selecting that option from the menu. Kill another fish or two if you're anxious to gather supplies, then take advantage of the option and head http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_14.html (2 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:57:50 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN back to town. (Above Left) Your friends at Moga Village have plenty to say upon your return. (Above Right) Check in at the Guild to find that a quest is finally available. When you get back to the village, you'll find that your usual business partners have new things to say to you. Talk to the village chief to receive 1500z and talk to his son to manage resources as usual. If you have sufficient funds, the Outfitter has received some new gear and the artisan will give you a handful of Armor Sphere items that you can use to upgrade your armor through his Armorcraft menu for a surprisingly reasonable price. At the market, the proprietress has some books that will increase your chances when you attempt to combine items, but they are expensive at this stage in the game unless you're ready to go out and grind in the wilds. Finally, you can head to the farm to retrieve any crops that you may have waiting for you. At this point, you've completed the introductory game content. It's time to start in on your actual adventures. Rathalos will occasionally fly in circles around the area, perhaps prompting you to think that he's leaving for an adjacent area on the map. http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_32.html (1 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:58:05 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN That's not necessarily the case, though. Pay attention, as he may come swooping in with a powerful dive that will inflict an unwelcome amount of damage. Another new attack is a trio of fireballs while airborne. If you see these coming, the best thing that you can do is run around to avoid them. Trying to stand your ground and block them with your shield won't necessarily work because the fireballs drain your stamina too quickly. Otherwise, the fight is fairly standard stuff. Make sure that you're wearing gear that's strong against fire and dragons, hit hard and fast to build up damage quickly, then follow a limping Rathalos to Area 6 on the map to ground him for good and move onto another quest. One such quest is called 'A Bard's Tale.' When you accept it, you will be asked to hunt a Barioth. You'll initially find that monster in Area 2, though on subsequent attempts it will more likely be located in one of the caves along the north side of the map. The Barioth looks like a cross between a saber-toothed tiger and a Rathian. Its elemental attacks, as you might suppose, are icy in nature. Those are joined by lunges and dives. You'll need to move quickly to avoid the physical attacks, while staying a safe distance is usually enough to avoid the icy blasts. Try to maneuver along your foe's flanks to stay in position to deal damage and to avoid rushes most easily. You'll still have to worry about a ridiculously long tail, so be ready to block as needed. (Above Left) Barioth is a challenging foe, with incredible speed, range and icy breath on his side. (Above Right) Stay in close and you can avoid both the vicious tail and the icy breath attacks that otherwise make this fight so difficult. Another thing to note is that you'll do horribly if you're weak to ice attacks. Make sure that you have appropriate charms and armor equipped (the Ingot gear is especially appropriate if you have some). You'll likely be looking forward to a rather protracted battle if you rely on your lance and shield combination, but they work as well here as anywhere else otherwise and can be useful if you put them to proper use and know when to block. Be careful as you follow Barioth from one area to another. He's capable of pouncing while making his entrance, so if you get there ahead of him he may kill you before he is even within range for you to do any attacks. When you almost have defeated him, he'll likely flee to Area 6, so be ready to follow and climb up to the pedestal where he is snoozing to finish the fight. It's likely that you've weakened him and have received a Pitfall Trap from the blue supply chest in base camp. If so, put it to use before waking him. Then you can either lure him to his demise as you hit him with a flurry of blows, or you can use tranquilizing items to capture him if you prefer. The final quest that you should worry about for now is called 'The Horned Dragon' and is another hunting http://au.guides.ign.com/guides/14209897/page_32.html (2 of 4) [2/1/2011 7:58:05 PM] Monster Hunter Tri Guide/Walkthrough - Wii, Wii Walkthrough - IGN quest. It takes place in the Sandy Desert area and will find you going up against a Diablos. You'll find soon that Diablos is a tough fellow. He first shows up in Area 9, which of course is draped in ridiculous heat by day. Make sure that you take a Cool Drink from the supply chest and put it to use before you advance into the hotter zones where your battle with Diablos will mostly take place. You'll also want to buff up your armor defenses, as your foe is capable of knocking you for a loop, stunning you, then knocking you for a loop again. (Above Left) Most of the time, the safest place to be is below Diablos so that you can avoid his tail and hit his stomach with your weapons. (Above Right) When you see him burrowing into the sand, you need to keep moving so that he won't burst free from the soil and ram you with his horns. Your best strategy is to move in close and use your weapon on his monstrous feet. Watch for movements that indicate that he's about to charge, though, since you can get trampled in his rush. He swings a hammer-tipped tail also, one that can clobber you something fierce if it connects with anything but your shield. Be careful that you don't get too greedy with combo moves or you'll leave yourself open for that damage. Getting stunned is about the worst thing that can happen in this fight, since it leaves you open for the worst attacks that Diablos can throw your way. Specifically, it leaves you open for Diablos to start digging. When you see him digging, it's time to put away your weapons so that you can move quickly, or so that you can throw a Sonic Bomb. The timing of your toss is important. You should throw it so that its arc lands just after the last bit of your enemy's tail disappears underground. If you timed it correctly, you'll receive credit for completing a side quest. Diablos will be caught as if in a trap and you can move in for a series of powerful strikes before the fight resumes. Note that you can only use the Sonic Bomb trick when Diablos is not in his berserk mode. If you see black puffs of smoke coming from his nostrils, don't waste your item.
