Hi, my name is Sarah and I’m 7 years old.
My friends and I need your help.
We have Inborn Errors of Metabolism, small faults in our DNA (genes) that stop our body
producing certain proteins, transmitters or enzymes. Each of us has a very rare condition
and for some of us the exact defect has not been found. Individually these conditions are
rare but collectively their incidence is in the vicinity of 1:800 live births. There are
approximately 400 children seen in Metabolic Clinic at the Royal Children’s Hospital
Melbourne alone.
I would like to share some of my story with you, to help give you an idea of why my friends
and I are asking for your help. Your help could improve our quality of life, and make life
easier for those we love and who love us, our families. I was born in 2007 and for the first
48 hours I seemed like most other babies. But then I shut down: I couldn’t stay warm, I was
‘sleeping’ 23 hours a day, I struggled to move, I would intermittently stop breathing and I
couldn’t suck. That was the beginning of many tests and my family’s life of medical
appointments, hospital admissions, operations, medications
and stress.
I cannot walk or crawl or sit myself up. I love food but I
can‘t feed myself and my food is still puréed. I don‘t
speak but I laugh, giggle and squeal. I have many
seizures, so my doctors tried many different
medications until they found something that could
help. My favourite colour is pink. I love pretty clothes
and teddy bears. Today I am a school girl and I love
being at school. I am different from others in my class
but they are all very kind to me and make me laugh.
I need a lot of support for every activity of daily life. My mum
has never been able to return to work as my care needs are too
great and we are often at the hospital. Everything I need is very expensive and the
government cannot fully fund my equipment. I have a wheelchair that I use. I can’t push it
myself or even get into it, so we have a hoist at home and another at school because I’m
too big to lift now. I can’t talk but I can understand a lot of what you say to me. I need hours
of physiotherapy and speech therapy. My therapists are teaching me to use a device that
will help me communicate with you.
To give me all that I have needed, my parents have sought help from our community.
Through their hard work and people’s generosity, they raised the $10,000 needed to buy
my wheelchair, plus the money for my walking frame, standing frame, bathing and toileting
chair, communication devices and therapy time. But we have met other children and
families who aren’t so lucky. They can’t afford to buy these. There are still others that can’t
afford the testing that may give them a diagnosis and allow them treatment.
My parents fundraised the $8000 needed to complete DNA testing to try and diagnose me.
I know there are many people who care and want to help others, many companies that
would help my friends and I, if they knew we were here. This is why we are reaching out to
you. Any financial support you can offer, be it big or small, could help one of my friends
take their first steps, or communicate with their family for the first time. Imagine finally
being able to tell your mum and dad you love them…

A message from the Chairman.
On February 14th 2014 , the Sarah and Friends Founda7on came together with a specific goal: to support children with rare Inborn Errors of Metabolism. What a first year it has been. As the parent of a child with a suspected rare metabolic disorder, I know first hand how difficult it is to find support. Many chari7es support children with rare disorders, but only if your child is diagnosed. Undiagnosed children like my daughter Sarah fall through the system. The Sarah and Friends Founda7on was our chance to support those undiagnosed children, suspected of having a rare metabolic disorder, as well as those children already diagnosed and needing help. We wanted to provide a way for children to gain access to equipment, to diagnos7c tests that were deemed too expensive and to provide emo7onal support for their families.
The Melbourne Marathon was our first fundraising event. It raised a staggering $10,040, thanks to the support of family, friends and the community. Tonight at our inaugural Valen7ne’s Day Ball, we are looking to raise the bar. With the outstanding support and help from our Major Sponsor Ray White Bundoora, we are hoping to double that amount. Since we announced the 2015 Valen7ne’s Day Ball event, our hearts have been warmed by the generous community support across Victoria. From companies who donated auc7on items, to those who purchased 7ckets and are in aTendance tonight, we thank you. Sarah and her friends will be forever grateful.
