ESTATES
Welcome to the Autumn/Winter 2014 edition of Harrods Estates
magazine, featuring our latest exclusive selection of luxury homes
to rent or buy in central London. The capital’s property market
continues to boom, and we have access to some of the most
spectacular homes on the market. We present here our collection of
the most desirable residences in the most exclusive areas, focusing
on Knightsbridge, Chelsea and Mayfair.
Also in this issue, we speak to star chef Eric Chavot – previously
of the Capital Hotel in Knightsbridge, now behind the hob at his
Brasserie Chavot in Mayfair – about his love for the city he has
made his home. And we travel to Marrakech to see the spectacular
house built and decorated by the eccentric French perfumer Serge
Lutens; an astonishing labyrinth of intricate decor, grand spaces and
flamboyant individual pieces. If you don’t find your style there, check
out our news pages for inspiration from the interiors world. And for
more ideas, head in-store to see a host of new collections, including
a range of pieces and collections created exclusively for Harrods
around September’s London Design Festival.
Whatever your requirements, our team of home and property
specialists can provide you with personal service and expert
advice on the most suitable home for you – and how to decorate it.
We look forward to seeing you soon.

WHY I LOVE
LONDON
For chef Eric Chavot, the city he now calls
home has it all – from tea at The Wolseley
to the Natural History Museum at night
BY AMY BROOMFIELD
ILLUSTRATOR NATALIE BOO MOSQUERA
After arriving in the UK, aged 18, to begin his culinary career,
Eric Chavot found work in a host of illustrious restaurants
including Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons under Raymond Blanc,
Harvey’s alongside Marco Pierre White and La Tante Claire with
Pierre Koffmann. But it was during his 10-year stint at the helm
of The Capital Hotel’s restaurant in Knightsbridge that Chavot’s
talent really shone. His faultless and intelligent cooking earned
two Michelin stars – with many esteemed critics claiming it should
have been three. In 2009, Chavot famously “quit” the London
culinary scene, heading to the USA where he shared his insights
in a consultant chef role, but in 2013 he was back, opening the
critically acclaimed Brasserie Chavot in Mayfair. Here, he tells
Harrods Home & Property Magazine what he loves most about
living and working in the capital.
Where is home for you?
I’ve been here since 1986. Though there’s a French flag in my passport,
I’d say I’m more London than anything else. I regularly go to France on
holiday, but I’m always happy to land back at Gatwick – it means I’m home.
What are the best things about this city?
The best time to enjoy London is either first thing in the morning or last
thing at night. It’s such a beautiful city, but there are too many people if
you try and go out in the afternoon – forget it, it’s too crowded. I drive
to work at 6am when it’s quiet, and I love it. X
Q&A

The Serpentine Lido,
Hyde Park
What do you love about working centrally?
I can get anywhere from where I am. When I worked on Charlotte
Street, I could walk to Regent’s Park for a little break. When I was at
The Capital Hotel in Knightsbridge and Grosvenor House in Mayfair,
I could run around the Serpentine in Hyde Park. Now I’m in Piccadilly,
I have everything on my doorstep.
The Wolseley
Where is the best place to enjoy a glass of Champagne?
I really love the buzz of The Wolseley – and it also does an excellent
afternoon tea.
Mandarin Oriental
Mandarin Oriental
What’s your favourite hotel in London?
I love the Mandarin Oriental because you can’t get that view of Hyde
Park from anywhere else. It has such history as well. Charles de Gaulle
used to spend all his time there.
Hyde Park
Which building do you like the most?
When I first arrived I was pretty broke so I would walk everywhere.
I used to go through Hyde Park to the French consulate, and when I got
there, the building opposite was the Natural History Museum. It was so
beautiful and it was free to go inside. I used to think that was crazy. It’s
especially magical at night-time. Inside, I can almost imagine I’m in
a scene from Night at the Museum.
Borough Market
What’s your
favourite market?
Borough Market near
London Bridge has most
things I want. It’s not
just for tourists, but for
trade as well. I also love
Portobello Market – if
you know what you’re
looking for, you’ll
definitely get it there.
Which park do you like the most?
It has to be Hyde Park. It took me two months to walk on the grass there,
because in France you’re not allowed to. I used to see people doing it
and think they would be told off, so when I first did it, it was the most
amazing thing I could do at the time – I was only 18 years old.
Nonsuch Park
Bistrot Bruno Loubet
What’s your favourite restaurant?
Bistrot Bruno Loubet at The Zetter Hotel is lovely. I love the work of
other French chefs. When I first arrived there were hardly any here apart
from Raymond Blanc and Pierre Koffmann… now they’re everywhere!
Where do you go to escape?
My garden. There’s a reason why the English are famous for their
gardens. It’s amazing: it has cherry trees, plum trees, rhubarb – though
I can’t really take much credit for it as it was all there when I moved in.
And opposite my house is Epsom’s Nonsuch Park. I have a park right
opposite my house – wow!
Will you stay in London forever?
Yes, but don’t tell my wife. HMN

BRANCHING OUT
COLLECTOR’S ITEM
The multifaceted functions of today’s devices – mobile phones, tablets, music players, laptops,
digital radio and cloud-based systems – can make syncing and updating a laborious task. Bang
& Olufsen’s BeoSound Essence centralises your music library, allowing you to request songs from
any device or service. The minimalist design (blink and you’ll miss the small disc on the wall)
reflects the device’s user-friendliness: a single touch changes the volume, stops or skips playlists, and
streams music from another device or service. Small and elegant, it’s a long way from stacked CDs.

Nature has provided inspiration to designers
and artists for centuries, but Portuguese
furniture brand Ginger & Jagger has taken
natural motifs one step further, using real
branches and foliage as moulds. Expertly
trained craftsmen create table legs in the shape
of rose branches, and mirrors decorated with
autumnal leaves, in a glamorous collection of
ultra-feminine furniture and home accessories.
Ginger & Jagger Primitive console £10,369.

INDEPENDENT INSPIRATION
Not content with being the restaurateurs behind two of east London’s coolest hangouts, Les Trois
Garçons have launched their own homeware collection. The trio – Hassan Abdullah, Stefan Karlson
and Michel Lasserre – began working together in the mid-1990s, when they founded an antiques
business. They opened Les Trois Garçons restaurant in 2000, followed by the LoungeLover cocktail
bar in 2003. The new furniture range adds another string to their bow. “We found there was a gap
in modern design; everything was either a pastiche or super-contemporary,” explains Abdullah.
“We wanted to create a collection that would merge periods – whether modern or classical – to fit
any type of space.” The threesome sought the skills of Portuguese manufacturer De Pau to help
them achieve their goal. The result is an eclectic mix of furniture that references Art Nouveau and
Art Deco via a combination of bronze, marble, velvet and oak. A bespoke range is also available.
Alberto Alessi is a huge promoter of upand-coming talent. Since taking the helm of
the family business, he has never employed
in-house designers, preferring instead to
collaborate with hand-picked independent
creatives. Over the years, Alessi has teamed
up with more than 500 artists and designers,
resulting in more than 85 quirky and
innovative product patents. The new Joy range
is the work of architect Claudia Raimondo,
whose centrepiece bowls (above) are crafted
from a single sheet of steel. A sophisticated
moulding technique helps create a multifaceted
interior that captures and deflects light and
reflections; finishes include 24kt gold plating,
and black or white resin. From £49. Available

IT’S A KIND OF MAGIC
Perfumer Serge Lutens’ Moroccan masterpiece has
been 36 years in the making. The result is an abode
that’s both mysterious and meditative BY JAN MASTERS
It takes a while for your eyes to adjust from the glare of
the Marrakech sun to the darkness of the cavernous hall
that greets you as you pass through the immense, creaking
doors. Instantly, the air becomes skin-chillingly cool. The
cacophonous dust-scramble of cars, bikes and donkey
carts falls away. Peace. In fact, there’s something almost
devotional about the atmosphere, as if what’s behind
the rather plain, bleached-stone exterior is a shrine to
Morocco’s rich heritage. Or a love letter to beauty. And
in some ways, that’s exactly what it is.
This is perfumer Serge Lutens’ house. In the heart of the
medina, it has taken him 36 years to create. Built on the
site of numerous old dwellings, large and small, it’s easy to
describe it as a grand palace, yet it owes much of its shape
and feel to a madrassa (a place of education). Shadowy
rooms for contemplation lead out to decorative, airy
courtyards, open to the sun and rain. Every space, both
inside and out, is a study in symmetry.
To many fragrance aficionados, Lutens, 72, inspires
veneration. His scents aren’t designed to be crowd-pleasers
but creations born of emotions, some painful. The new
L’Orpheline, for example, with incense and woods, tells of
his early separation from his mother (when he was young,
he had to live with another family, as he was born out of his
mother’s adulterous relationship – in those days a punishable
offence). Ever since, he has imagined a female persona as the
muse for fragrances… and, indeed, for this house.
After arriving in Marrakech in 1968, Lutens never really
left, inspired by its exoticism. To say his house exudes
mystery is an understatement. Movement from room to
room requires journeying down dimly lit corridors – for
a first-time visitor (or even, possibly, a regular visitor) there
is no alternative but to follow one of Lutens’ attendants,
dressed in billowing white robes and a red fez. Wander
alone and, inevitably, you will be lost in the labyrinth.
What’s so magical about this maze, however, is that
it never leads to a dead end, only to distracting surprises
and grand spaces, each a celebration of fine craftsmanship.
Floors are carpeted with miniature mosaics, resplendent
in emeralds, cobalts and oranges. Balconies
“Everywhere, the are set with hundreds of lanterns. And cedarceilings and stonework friezes are carved

the extraordinary and says that during construction, he would often
the extraordinary to have 500 craftsmen working on the house
any one time.
the sublime” at There’s
no denying that the aura is almost
sacred. So rarefied is it, Lutens himself doesn’t live here.
Astonishing but true. “I’ve never lived here. I’ve never
slept here. I’ve never bathed here,” he states, almost matter
of factly. He simply pays homage to the house every day

“I have some books, but I have few belongings.”
There is, however, plenty that he enjoys during his daily
sojourns. Sitting rooms with drape-worthy day beds,
a library, an office with a desk and chairs of exquisite
marquetry, and Orientalist paintings adorning the walls.
What does he do? He reads poetry. He writes. Concocts
perfumes. And revels in the intense richness of colours,
textures and Moorish motifs that he so adores.
He also finds it meditative to sit in the gardens with their
babbling fountains, surprised, perhaps, by an occasional
burst of doves from the bougainvillea as it snakes its way
around a cypress, a tree that once had pride of place in one
of the original riads and the only thing Lutens has kept.
What’s so magical about his grand house is not just the
big-ticket statements, but all the romantic touches: red velvet
against cool stone; Moroccan lamps casting kaleidoscopic
patterns on walls; and the fact that nothing is considered
so mundane that it cannot be decorated exquisitely – from
the pierced drain covers designed by Lutens himself to
the Coca-Cola served at lunch in diminutive cranberry
glass decanters. Everywhere, the ordinary is lifted to the
extraordinary and the extraordinary to the sublime.
In practical terms, there’s no denying this house is a legacy
for the Moroccan people and the country he has lived in for
so long. In psychological terms, however, it is his heartbeat.
“The house is not done yet,” he states categorically. “If
it stops, then I stop. It’s an ongoing story.” HMN
