Combined SAR Training exercise successful
in Gatineau
Over 25 CASARA members, two CASARA aircraft and a ground team participated in the successful Combined SAR
Training exercise in Gatineau recently.
Five CASARA members were onboard
the CC130 to support the afternoon
military SAR Operations. The CASARA
members acted as spotters and directed
the CC-130 around a potential distress
signal to have a closer look. After proper
identification, the SAR Techs dropped a
bundle of medical supplies and finally
jumped to the simulated crash site to
provide medical care until the local EMS
extracted the casualties. The volunteer
organization CASARA gained valuable
experience during the Combined SAR
Training and there is an exchange of
experience to be gained by everybody
in these combined training efforts, according to Capt. Claude Courcelles,
CASARA/SERABEC Liaison Officer at
424 Squadron.
MFRC Invisible Ribbon Gala to feature online auction
Support and generosity of local businesses ‘phenomenal’ as gala approaches
By Ross Lees
I
f you are planning on attending and
supporting the Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) Invisible Ribbon
Gala, you need to purchase your tickets
immediately because they are only 50
tickets away from selling out.
The potential for that sellout has
sparked a new element for this year’s
gala – an online auction also open to the
wider community in the Quinte area
prior to the actual gala event on May 9
at the National Air Force Museum of
Canada.
“In addition to this year’s auction and
gala as it has been in the previous years,
there will be an online auction which
will take place May 1 to 4 – a Friday
morning until Monday evening,” noted
Tamara Kleinschmidt, the MFRC executive director.
The event will be run through Facebook to allow as many people as possible
to take part, according to online auction
coordinator Joanna Cronk.
“We’re hoping a large portion of the
external community will be able to take
part,’ she noted. “It just kind of opens it
up to letting them be part of such a great
event.”
“It will be really representative of the
local support we have and it’s another
way for us to support the local businesses that support us,” stated Mrs. Kleinschmidt. “It will garner them a lot of
attention.”
The support and generosity of the
local businesses has been phenomenal
this year, according to Mrs. Cronk.
“Some of them gave us multiple donations so we can actually split them
between the online and silent auctions

‘Royal Tigers’ participated in
a cultural exchange trip down to
Dayton, Ohio to share ideas and
build rapport with their US Civil

as well as explore some of the
differences between Canada and
our primary ally to the south.
Two full days were spent at
Wright Patterson Air Force Base
where they were able to explore
the massive United States Air
Force Museum complex including a special hangar dedicated
to retired Air Force One planes
and a variety of prototype aircraft, followed by an introduction to the flight line and control
tower operations by a handful of
extremely knowledgeable USAF
airmen.
After liaising with their CAP
contacts, a meet-and-greet was
organized on the third day between the two groups of Cadets
at the local CAP airfield and hangar to compare equipment, training, and subsequent roles the two
groups play in their respective
societies.
The CAP and their Cadets are a

Keeping the Yukon
Galley warm
The WCE RM Shop does double duty keeping the Yukon Galley Dinning Hall warm for our troops and providing energy efficient environmentally friendly solutions, by replacing a roof top HVAC system
at the Yukon Galley in March. Brandon Dafoe, who started with 8
Wing as a Refrigeration/Heating apprentice and is now a qualified
tradesperson, is finishing the final control connections for the new
HVAC unit. This system replaces an older, less efficient model and is
equipped with next generation environmentally friendly refrigerant.

the Forest Moon of Endor. Luckily there
weren’t any Storm Troopers present so
everyone made it back in one piece, albeit
with some ruffled feathers.
Afterwards, no visit to the USA would
ever be complete without a trip to the
mall. It just so happens there was a massive one not far from the hotel they were
staying in where the Cadets were eager to
spend their parent’s hard-earned money
on mementos of their incursion south.
Until March break of 2016, the Royal Tigers will continue to have fond memories of this year’s experiences in Ohio,
and who knows what destination will be
planned for next year?

methods of instruction of the two groups
are very similar, and like our Cadets many
of the CAP Cadets will eventually move on
to a career in the military.
A second opportunity for the Cadets to
interact was arranged for the indoor rock
climbing wall at Wright State University
on day four, where both groups were able
to display their physical skills and climbing prowess in a less formal environment. Afterwards the two groups took
turns forming-up and showing off their
drill moves in front of the curious university onlookers, shook hands, and then
exchanged gifts and pleasantries with the
promise of future opportunities.
Further training and leadership activities came in the way of a full day of
zip-lining at the Ozone
Zipline Adventures near
Lebanon, OH. Here,
cadets and staff were
equally able to safely
overcome their fear of
heights while traversing cables spanning
hundreds of meters over
deep river valleys and

Box lunch anyone? For all those who ever flew onboard our aircraft,
you never went without food to fill your stomachs. And for that, you
can thank those in food services. I don’t have the stats for 1955 (when
this photo was taken), but last year Flight Feeding made 33,154 box
lunches.

Fall protection worth latching onto
F
alls are the largeest cause of
accidental deaths in the workplace. And you don’t have to fall far
to be killed or injured.
On many sites, guardrails are
the most common and convenient
means of fall protection. Where
guardrails cannot be installed
or are impractical, the two basic types of fall protection are
travel restraint and fall arrest.
Both involve a full-body harness.
Travel-restraint system
A travel-restraint system keeps
you from getting too close to an
unprotected edge. The lifeline and
lanyard are adjusted to let you
travel only so far. When you get
to the open edge of a floor or roof,
the system holds you back and prevents you from falling. A full-body
harness should be used with travel
restraint systems. You can attach
the harness directly to a rope grab
on the lifeline or by a lanyard. stance or object.
The lifeline must be securely an- A fall-arrest system consists of a

full-body harness, a lanyard, and
a shock absorber and should be inFall-arrest system
spected annually. You can connect
If no other fall protection is in
the lanyard directly to adequate
place, you must use a fall-arrest
support or to a rope grab mounted
system if you are in danger of fallon an adequately anchored lifeing:
line.
• more than three metres
A full-body harness must also be
• into operating machinery
worn and tied off when you are:
• into water or another liquid
• on a rolling scaffold that is being
• into or onto a hazardous sub-
moved
• getting on, working from,
or getting off a suspended platform
or suspended scaffold
• any type of lifting platform.
Lifelines must be adequately anchored. Fall-arrest loads can be
high and that means able to support the weight of a small car
(about 3,600 pounds).
So, remember, use fall protection
when working at heights.
Be aware of gasoline safety at all times
A man was trying to start a campfire with wet wood. Having little
success, he decided to speed up the
process. Thinking that the fire was
completely out, he poured some gasoline on the wood. The gas ignited
and flames raced up the stream and
ignited the gas can and his clothes.
He received very serious burns.
Gasoline is one of the most dangerous substances that we store in
or around the home. Because it is
so common, we often fail to treat it
with respect.
Remember these things about using gasoline safely:
• Only purchase enough for the
job at hand and store it in approved containers.
• Don’t store it in the house. Keep
it in a detached garage or a tool
shed.
• Never fill up your lawnmowers,
rototiller, or any other piece of
machinery when it is hot. Wait
for it to cool before filling.
• Don’t use gasoline for washing
automotive parts. The fumes
can ignite from an ignition
source that isn’t even close to
the area you're working in.
• Never use gasoline indoors.
• Never use gasoline to start a fire
or pour it on a fire that has already been started. The fire can
rush back up the stream of gas,
igniting the container in your
hand.
• Don’t try to extinguish a gasoline fire with water. The water
will only spread the fire.
A man was using gasoline to clean
the floor of his garage. He took the
time to shut off the power and he
extinguished the pilot light on the
overhead furnace. He opened the
doors and window to ventilate the
building. Believing he was safe,
he proceeded to use the gasoline to
clean the floor. Then his neighbor
walked into the garage carrying
a case of beer and a lit cigar. The
cigar ignited the gasoline fumes,
burning the two men and destroying the garage.
