Eagle Walk Stage 19
Anhalter Hut – Hanauer Hut
Th is walk delivers much reward for the
effort involved. The exposed and rugged
trail from Anhalter Hut to Steinjöchl Col
is assisted by a fi xed anchoring system of
cables. From the col, it’s a steep descent to
Hahntennjoch Saddle. Gorgeous scenery
awaits in the Pfafflar Valley, passing picturepostcard villages en route to Angerletal
Valley and to the destination of this walk,
Hanauer Hut. With most of the 38 square
kilometre Muttekopf Nature Preserve
area lying above treeline, you‘ll be in a true
Alpine environment. Don’t miss to turn your
focus from the beautiful scenery to your
feet as rare, exotic and imperilled Alpine
wildflowers and plants can be found here.

Eagle Alpine History
Traffic Lights at Hahntennjoch Pass Road. Scenic Hahntennjoch Pass Road was opened
to traffic in 1969. With a summit at 1,894 metres, Hahntennjoch is a high mountain pass
that connects the upper Inntal Valley with Tirol’s Lechtal Valley. The high Alpine road
leads over 29 meandering kilometres and grades up to 18.9 percent from Imst to Elmen
and is popular with motorcyclists and cyclists. Because of its location, however, the road
has always been exposed to the forces of nature. In severe weather conditions, the risk
of landslides increases dramatically. Therefore, in 2004 an automatic system with two
weather stations was installed at Hahntennjoch Saddleback and at Muttekopf Hut, which
is connected to radio-controlled traffic lights, which immediately turns red in case of
imminent danger

The historic wooden homes, typical of the Pfafflar
Valley, are constructed from round tree trunks;
some of which date back to the 13th century. For
the construction of these houses, neither a saw
nor any metal was used. The joints are filled with
mortar and whitened, which makes the houses
look striped.

One of the most striking peaks here is Falschkogel
Peak, easily recognizable from Steinjöchl Col for
the jagged cliffs on its north shoulder and the
gentle pastoral hills to the south. But, don’t be
fooled, the terrain is not as gentle as it seems; in
fact there are steep drop-offs and exposed areas;
so even on level terrain, it‘s good to place good
handholds.

Trail Description
Start off at Anhalter Hut, descend a few
metres westward and then walk up to Steinjöchl Saddle (some cable safeguards) on a
singletrack trail. Beyond the dip, the trail
descends rather steeply, but soon continues
to lead downward more gradually through
meadows and dwarf pines. Traverse the
slopes in south-western direction and head
towards the Hahntennjoch Saddle. At the
point where the route leads up to the road,
follow the red blazes across Alpine pastures,
descending on the right side on a singletrack
trail in western direction, before following
signs to “Hanauer Hütte”. The route runs
north of the road along a path and further
down gently descending on a dirt road and
through a little ravine. Where the road bends
sharply to the left, the trail winds down on
a grass strip north of the road (Trail No. 601
is marked). Soon, you will reach the homes
of Pfafflar (here, one could branch off into
Fundaistal Valley to Galtseite Col for the
alternative route to Hanauer Hut). For the
original route, however, walk through
Pfafflar on the road until a signed (“Nach
Boden”) track heads to the left, where you
cross the road and the creek. Thereafter,
descend on a singletrack trail along the

creek (at the point where a group of homes
can be found, one can also branch off to
Galtseite Col for the alternative route).
The original route descends westward to
the hamlet of Boden and to the car park for
Hanauer Hut. Cross Fundaisbach Creek and
follow signs to “Hanauer Hütte”. The route
now runs on a well-maintained dirt road and
crosses Angerlebach Stream, leading into
Angerletal Valley. After the bridge, the route
leads gently uphill. Soon, you can catch the
first glimpse of Hanauer Hut, which is located
on an upland plateau high above the valley.
Thereafter, the path descends a few metres
before ascending again through Angerletal
Valley next to the broad streambed. At the
base of the telpher line, the dirt road turns
onto a singletrack trail that zigzags up to the
hut (stay on the summer route). Hanauer Hut
is situated at an elevation of 1,922 metres,
with the Kogelseespitze Spire in the backdrop.
