propulsion system research. It creates flight conditions
from near sea level up to 90,000 feet, subsonic to Mach
speeds, and weather conditions that help to understand
how ice crystal clouds can affect aircraft engines.
Chill Out in the Icing Research Tunnel
Enter the Portal to the Space Station
The Icing Research Tunnel may be an historic landmark,
but it’s on the cutting-edge of research to understand the effects of in-flight icing on full-size aircraft components. Creating
safer aircraft has always been the goal because NASA is with
you when you fly.
Drop by the Zero-G
How do you create weightlessness on Earth? The ZeroGravity facility, the largest drop tower of its kind, does it everyday to test the effects of microgravity on experiments and
hardware. Peer into the deep hole that goes down 467 feet.
Roll Over to SLOPE
You’ve never seen wheels like this. Researchers at the
SLOPE (Simulated Lunar Operations) facility develop innovative wheels that can navigate lunar and Martian terrain so
NASA can continue to explore the solar system and beyond.
Get into the Gruve
GRUVE and GVIS designers create 3-D and virtual reality
products based on science and engineering specifications. The
GRUVE Lab is an advanced CAVETM like display environment
for science and engineering. Its three large, moveable projection modules can create a 24-foot display wall, a panoramic 3D
theater or a fully immersive virtual reality room.
Imagine Conditions at 90,000 Feet
The Propulsion System Lab is the nation’s premier altitude
flight simulation facility for full-scale gas turbine engine and
Do you ever wonder how experiments are conducted
on the International Space Station? Sometimes the astronauts do the research and sometimes it’s done remotely
back here on Earth. At the Telescience Support Center operators can send commands and receive science data from
their payload hardware operating on board the ISS.
Journey to Deep Space
The Electric Propulsion Laboratory has many vacuum
chambers that simulate the unique conditions of deep
space. This is where they test hardware and solar-electric
propulsion systems that will help NASA achieve its future
missions on the journey to Mars.
Start your Engines
When it comes to engines, they’ve got you covered. The
Engine Research Building is filled to the brim with test cells
that support research on every aspect of engine development—turbomachinery, aerodynamics, flow physics, aeropropulsion, heat transfer, mechanics and combustion.
Take It to the Limits
Talk about extreme! The Glenn Extreme Environment Rig
(GEER) can simulate the most hostile conditions in space. Take
Venus for example, which has surface atmosphere high-pressure up to 90 times that on Earth and surface temperatures up
to 872˚ F. GEER tests whether spacecraft will survive those conditions before they launch.
Power for a New Generation of Space Missions
Take a look at the next generation of solar arrays at the
Photovoltaic Lab that will power future spacecraft going to Jupiter and Saturn. You’ll even see a demonstration on how water
can be split into H2 and O2 to be used in fuel cells and see the
batteries of the future. All these are powerful sources of energy
for the space missions of tomorrow.
Dream about Deep Space Exploration
How does NASA dream about and design the spacecraft
of the future? In the COMPASS Lab! Teams of engineers and scientists create rockets and spacecraft designs such as a submarine that could explore Saturn’s moon Titan and a Mars return
rocket that uses the Martian atmosphere to propel itself.

Perfect Power Wash: Regular Cleaning Given a New Meaning
Where to start?
That is the first question homeowners ask themselves as
temperatures warm up and spring cleaning shifts from inside
to outside the home.
Ask the experts at Perfect Power Wash, however, and
they’ll be the first to say that answer is fairly simple: spring
is the time homeowners should consider taking care of
their most valuable assets first.
“In the same way you routinely perform maintenance
on other areas of your home and yard, spring is also the
perfect time to make sure the exterior of your home is
spruced up and ready to enjoy all season long,” said Mike
Palubiak, owner of Perfect Power Wash.
“Over the last 16 years, it’s something we’ve seen a great
deal of in Northeast Ohio,” Mike says. “More and more
homeowners seem to be gravitating towards having us out
year after year to help maintain their home. We’ve met so
many folks who just consider us part of their spring routine. Booking your appointment early, especially with this recent
warm weather trend, will guarantee your home looks its best
for your first barbeque and yard games this spring.” Mike
explains that neglecting to maintain your home not only detracts from curb appeal, it drastically shortens the lifespan of
your roof, siding, patio, and your driveway.
Perfect Power Wash offers instant quotes over the
phone using satellite images of their customers’ homes.
Not only do customers not have to be home when calling
to receive an estimate, they also do not have to be home
when crews complete the job.
Due to the recent swing to warm weather, Mike recommends homeowners book their spring appointments as
soon as possible. As of the writing of this article, their sixteen-vehicle fleet is filling spots into the second and third
week of April.
For more information or an instant quote over the
phone, call Perfect Power Wash at 440-856-3400, or visit www.perfectpowerwash.com.

Westlake Boosters Celebrate New High School Weight Room
The Westlake Demons Athletic Boosters
(WDAB) celebrated the completion of a capital fundraising campaign for a new, state-of-the-art weight
room at Westlake High School with a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony on Thursday, May 5.
With the help of an anonymous donor who
pledged half of the amount needed for the weight
room upgrade, WDAB was challenged to raise the
other half. The old weight room at WHS had not
been updated in decades and was filled with rusted,
unsafe, mismatched weights and equipment.
Along with the funds raised by WDAB, the old
equipment was sold and those funds were put toward
the purchase of new equipment. All athletes at Westlake High School as well as physical education students will utilize the strength training made available
in the new weight room.
“This new training facility could not have been
accomplished without the collaboration and partnership with our coaches, parents, administration and
WDAB members. In just our 3rd year as an organization, WDAB is incredibly proud to have helped
bring this project to fruition. We are poised to do
great things with Westlake athletics,” shared Ed Blair,
WDAB President.
Next up for WDAB is their 2016 Membership
Drive, The Westlake Community Night at the Lake
Erie Crushers game on May 17 and the 2nd Annual
Demon Classic Golf Outing at Red Tail Golf Club on
Monday, July 11. WDAB is a 501c3 designated organization that supports athletics at Lee Burneson Middle School and Westlake High School. To see more
about the Westlake Demons Athletic Boosters, go to

Students (l-r) Mike Beaver, Jack Redinger, Justin Godfrey, Melanie Rence,

17th Annual Goodyear STEM Career Day
Students in the Westlake High School Technology & Engineering (T & E) Department participated in the 17th annual Goodyear STEM Career Day sponsored by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company on April 30, hosted on the campus
of the University of Akron.
Goodyear’s STEM Career Day mission is to inform and
encourage young men and women in grades six through 12 to
pursue opportunities and careers that exist in various science,
technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
Students participated in the college and career fair as well as
the many different engineering presentations and activities led by
representatives from over 40 local STEM-related businesses and
universities. Campus tours were offered to parents, guardians
and teachers who attended. The WHS TechMates team participating in the event included Elise Kennedy, Anna Renkel, Sean
Freeman, David Eppele, Jackson Liang, Sneha Ramachandran,
Mark Sargent, John Anitas, Jill Eddy, Jordan Sherwin, Erik Hoke,
Michael Rees, Connor Reis, Connor Harte, John Willi, and Katie
Willi.
Kicking off the day was a welcome introduction and keynote from Goodyear Chief Technical Officer Joe Zekoski.
Throughout the day, students were engaged in a multitude
of activities, including:

Kelly Zurawski Named to Avon Board of Education
Kelly Zurawski was sworn in as the newest member of the Avon Local Schools Board of Education (BOE) during a special meeting May 6.
She replaces former School Board President, Scott Radcliffe, who was sworn in as the new Ward
4 Avon City Councilman last month. The BOE had 30 days to fill the vacant position.
The BOE received 11 applications for the school board position and interviewed all 11 candidates.
“We were very impressed with the pool of candidates we had,” said Heather Mahoney, School
Board president. “Kelly is an outstanding educator and
she really impressed us with her knowledge of the Avon
schools and her experience in education. She will be a
great asset to our board of education and the community.
She has a dynamic personality. She is also very passionate
about our school system. She will be a great fit.”
Zurawski is a high school science teacher in the Solon
City School district.
“I am excited about all the positive things happening
in the Avon schools,” said Zurawski. “As a teacher, I am in
the trenches every day and I know the challenges facing
teachers, administrators and parents. I am impressed with
how our the school district has been able to manage the
growth over the years and I look forward to working with
my fellow board members to continue to do great things
for students and the community.”
Zurawski and her husband Bryan have lived in Avon
for seven years and have two sons. Daniel is a sixth-grader
at Avon Middle School and Alex is a third-grader at Heritage Elementary School. She has served on school district levy campaigns and also regularly volunteers in the schools.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from John Carroll University. She earned a Master of Arts
degree in secondary education from Kent State University. She is a graduate of Olmsted Falls High School.
The BOE term expires December 31, 2017.
